I have heard gripes about how easily they were captured, but honestly the way CC says, "this is far from over" (paraphrase) it seems obvious he WANTED them to be captured, since Zartan is now lording over the U.S. in the guise of the potus. I don't think it was a plot hole, just setting itself up for the obvious sequel.

Zartan will probably give them a full pardon claiming there wasn't enough incriminating evidence to suggest they had anything to do with the nano-weapons. Than Cobra will return controlling the United States and ultimately the Joes.
or
Zartan could just tell the Joes to release both Cobra and Destro along with Baroness. Setting up Cobra's plan to reclaim his sister on his side and destroying the Joes one and for all.

I'm glad that this film is actually doing well financially and the GA seemed to enjoy it for the most part. No matter what the detractors say about the movie I still want a sequel.
Do you guys think the sequels budget will be lower or higher? I guess this question needs to get asked once the final BO numbers come in.

I doubt that will happen since it would then draw suspicion onto Zartan's impersonation. No, his intervention would be much more discreet; such as creating openings from which Cobra operatives can take advantage of as well as sabotage the Joes internally.

I just hated they were captured. It was better in the script.

I believe the ending where they escape was filmed, but not used because, if the movie didn't got any sequels, all the storylines would be wrapped up.

I think we're going to get a sequel to GI Joe before Transformers 3. Michael Bay said he wants to take a break before doing Transformers 3, and since it'll probably make like a billion dollars Paramount and Hasbro will wait for him. In the meantime, they can probably get a GI Joe sequel out the year before Transformers 3, assuming they can get the greenlight soon enough.

Transformers 3 in 2012
G.I. Joe 3 in 2013
My Little Pony in 2014

I did think it was kinda lame how they got captured. CC and Destro escaping just as GI Joe was closing in at the last second would have been a much cooler way for the movie to end and works as nod to the cartoon series as well. All we got was them being put into big soda cans or whatever. It seemed rushed....what was up with those prison "cells"?
Anyway, now that they are captured and will definatly break out, I hope it all has some kinda point to it all. And since G.I. Joe is a multinational force, I would doubt the president has the sole power of releasing them. I think France would have something to say about that. I put their escape solely in the hands of the Baroness. At LEAST we might get a cool escape sequence.

With the Cobra guy now being the President though, he will have a big factor in their escape, this was obvious even to me and I dont have a clue about the mythos!

I think it was done to show, as CC stated, it has only just begun.
When you think about it, CC is thinking about the bigger picture. The warheads were simply a distraction for their true intentions...they now (essentially) have control of the Presidency/United States.
If anything, CC and Destro probably wont even need to escape, they'll probably end up being pardoned or something in the sequel, leaving G.I. Joe helpless...

Am I the only one who felt like the Zartan scene at the end should have been after the end credits? I'm tired of movies that have a "twist" ending that would be more shocking if you have to sit through the credits to see it, because that way it's a secret. It started with Godzilla, where they had the shot of the hatching egg before the credits when it should have been afterwards. Then, there was Incredible Hulk with the Tony Stark screne. Now, we have GI Joe where we end with seeing Zartan as the prez.
I thought it was a cool ending and a great way to set up for a sequel, but I think it would have been better if it was after the credits, and it'd give people a reason to stick around. I can only imagine how hard John Favereau had to fight to keep the Nick Fury scene from being stapled to the regular ending of Iron Man instead of being an Easter Egg, especially since they actually bothered to get Sam Jackson to be in it. I wish more producers and directors would appreciate the subtle beauty of a well placed secret ending!

General audiences don't stick around to the end of credits for a 30 second scene....only fans stick around.
AVEITWITHJAMON
08-25-2009, 08:53 AM
^Exactly, only people who visit web-sites like this find out about after scene's credits and only we are bothered to stick around, no one else, even when you tell them there is something at the end as they can just skip to it when they get the dvd.

About half the crowd left as soon as the final music piece with their jet zooming away started up. They prepare to leave before the credits even roll. Some dude yelled down the hall, "hey there's more!" then some of them ran back to see.

Precisely. And for those who'd have left early, they'd be wondering/complaining how Zartan's subplot got forgotten as well as wonder what happened to the President. For all purposes, putting it before the credits was a necessary step for plot cohession. Instead, they should have put a PSA at the end of the credits. Heck, they could have filmed a couple and randomly distributed them out amongst theaters (like what they did with X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

I noticed right after the "You will call me...COMMANDER" scene, when they get side view of the ship, you can see the red Cobra symbol. I about jizzed in my pants.
