View Full Version : As of Sunday, Nintendo Wii at $199

Nintendo will drop the price of the Wii in the U.S. to $199 on Sunday, Sept. 27. That's this Sunday.
Marked down from $250, the best-selling system will retain it's original Wii Sports bundle. The new price is on par with the Xbox 360 Arcade and $100 cheaper than the recently released PS3 Slim.
The price drop is only valid in the U.S., so everyone else will simply have to wait to see what Nintendo does in other territories.

So? Wii's are lame sauce. In a year, the Xbox will have the same motion controls and more. The Wii would be better if it didn't have last gen graphics. Plus, they are already discussing and probably already building the next Nintendo anyways, which I think will be released next Holiday season from internet rumblings.

Yeah...I own one....but hardly play it. Or much video games these days. Mostly online talking to people or being bored or working out or shooting basketball.
I actually prefer the PS3 over the Wii, cause I like the old school controls. Although zombie games on the Wii are nice.

My cousin had a Wii. It was fun for about a month, like Guitar Hero. It just got old quick and he sold it. Everything was too kiddy for me, but that is their demographic. I had a Gamecube but the Wii's graphics suck so said nu uh.

I got my Wii for Smash Brothers. And Mario Galaxy. Mario Kart. No More Heroes. Zelda. Virtual Console.
Beyond that, there's nothing to love.

I suspect the Wii is better for families, but that the X-box and PS3 are both better for serious gamers.

On one hand, you get some more serious mature games the 360/PS3, but on the Wii you get no doubt about it, the most iconic characters of video games alongside some just generally fun experiences (Wii Sports, etc). But aside from those games, everything else the Wii has to offer you are better off purchasing on the 360 or PS3.

I got a Wii for the Nintendo franchises, Zelda, Mario Galaxy and Kart, Metroid, Punch Out, none of those games was disappointed. Also a small number of the third party titles are good, Raving Rabbids, Zack and Wiki, then the ports like Resident Evils and Okami, plus the Virtual Console. It's everything I expected it to be, definitely worth the $250. Got the Wii for all those games and X-Box for the more "mature" games, each console has it's positive and negatives.

I think since both PS3 and 360 dropped $100 on their most expensive model, Wii should have done likewise and brings it down to $150. I used to play Wii, until I got a 360 and about the only thing I still play occasionally on Wii is Wii Fit. I've been thinking about getting Wii Sports Resort and Punch Out, but I think I'll wait until they are in the bargain bin.

That's one thing that really bugs me about both Wii and DS, the don't discount games. Mario Galaxy is still going for $50, I think it's been almost 2-3 years since it was released. I wanted to get New Super Mario Bros to play on a trip I took, but that's still $35. C'mon start taking the price down on some of those first party titles.

^^ That's because that is where Nintendo makes their money besides hardware, with their first party titles. Plus, it is what sells their systems so they really don't have to lower the prices on those titles.

Why wouldn't they be?
Also, am I the only one who finds the term "serious gamer" to be an oxymoron?
chaseter
09-24-2009, 02:07 PM
Because they aren't the same quality as the 360 or PS3. The third party developers have to compress and get rid of a lot of content to put their games on a Wii disc. Not only that, but the audio and visuals are sub par when compared to the PS3 and 360. The only thing that separates the Wii from last gen is the barely accurate Wii motion controller...yet they had that for Duck Hunt over a decade ago:o

There are crappy games on all systems. I am talking about the games across all three consoles. The developers have to get rid of a lot of stuff so that it will work on a Wii. That means that compared to the games on the PS3 and 360, the Wii game has less. It has less story, worse graphics, worse audio, etc...when compared to its counterparts. So, that means that the quality of that game is less than its counterparts. Therefore, the games should not be the same price.
SuperFerret

Beatles Rock Band and GH5 are $60. Sometimes Best Buy has deals on new games. I got Arkham Asylum for the 360 for only $50 as a new release because it came with a $10 gift card.
Again, I don't go look at the Wii games aisle so I may be wrong but I have seen $60 Wii games is what I am getting at...when they shouldn't be $60 imo.
Manic
09-24-2009, 02:53 PM
The $50 price for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 isn't a deal. It's just $10 cheaper than its 360 and PS3 counterparts. It's the same with sport games like Madden 10 or NBA 2K10. The Wii versions are listed $10 less on the websites I check.
It just so happens that EA and Activision are a little evil, and realized they could gouge Wii owners a little.

Some new games for the PS3 and 360 are cheeper than others and the cheep ones are normally the ones that aren't AAA class games.

I know that's where they make their money, that's where all consoles make their money, software and accesories. However, after a time they should release a "greatest hits" version, like both 360 and PS3 do and GameCube did. It'll be what 3 years soon since Mario Galaxy was released, maybe drop it down to $20-30
As for $60 Wii games, chaseter I think you're shopping at the wrong stores, I've never seen a Wii game over $50 unless it had something extra. Plus, since Wii's hardware isn't quite up to 360 and PS3 standards the teams have to develop the game basically from the start with Wii in mind, they can't just port it over, only thing they don't need to spend more on is the story, so the $50 price tag isn't quite that outrageous.

I don't own a Wii so I don't dig through the games to look at prices or compare across stores. The only time I notice it is when they have them up front in a display thingy. The other day I saw that Wii Rockband and GH were $60 and the same was on bestbuy.com.
I bought an elite Saturday for $299 and you can get a $50 mail in rebate off of the xbox Live dashboard so it was $249. That is very, very good. Only a $50 difference between an Elite and a Wii.

You had to have mistaken the 360 and PS3 prices for the Wii prices. However, when it comes to Rock Band or Guitar Hero, the platform doesn't make too much of a difference since graphics or story aren't really a big part of the game. The only thing that would suck about getting the Wii version is no ability to download songs.

Yes they are awful games. GH and RB, like the Wii, are fun for a while. Then, they get old and you move on. Plus, the fact that Activision comes out with like 3 GH games a year, I won't support them anymore. It is also way too much money to download a lot of your favorite songs and too much money to buy the peripherals for the game. Activision also pissed me off when I bought GH4, my drums were broken, and they told me that I would have to pay to send it in and pay to get it back through UPS or USPS even though they made a defective product. Ridiculous.

nope... these games are dumb though... I'll keep a beat to my favorite song with my hand... not with a 120 game, so I can hit colored buttons in synch with the TV..

I'll admit that Guitar Hero is a stupid game series, but it's no more stupid than Dance Dance Revolution was, and I loved those games too. Anyway, I like the music. Guitar Hero inspired me to listen to David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Also, I stopped buying the games after Guitar Hero 2 because the track lists stopped appealing to me. Anyone who buys these games without regard as to whether or not they'll like the music is kind of a dope.

You could say all games are fun for while then you move on though. Used to play GRAW and Rainbow Six a whole lot until I got Modern Warfare and moved on to that. Plus Activision isn't any different from Rock Band, it's just packaged differently sure you've got the main Guitar Hero, then 1-3 Guitar Hero: "x" band. Rock Band comes out with new downloads every week though, which are eventually released in stores as genre packs, sure it's a little better since it's a la carte with Rock Band, but if you downloaded every Rock Band track or bought every Guitar Hero in a year, you'd easily be spending more on Rock Band, not to mention Rock Band's released to main games this year Rock Band Beatles and the ultra gimmicky Lego Rock Band.
I've just decided to wait for them to go on sale, got Guitar Hero Aerosmith for $10 with a guitar this past spring.
Only to play Mario and Zelda I might get one.

I understand what you are saying but I am never going to buy GH again. I will buy Modern Warfare 5 when it comes out in 10 years. GameInformer had a good article about music games coming and going in fads and they made a lot of sense. There is already a decline in sales because they over saturated the market. Pretty soon, they will stop making those games as often or all together. Then, in a few years they re-emerge when technology steps up and delivers an amazing experience again. These games really don't step up or change gameplay so they are getting stale and old pretty quickly.
