View Full Version : New DTL Recruitment Thread

Ok, the last time I did this, I tried treating the DTL like it's always been treated. This time, I think we'll treat it a bit more like the RPG Fight Club.
A big downfall with previous seasons are players who commit to play, but either can't or don't stick with the game. I think this time we're going to spell out and require the commitment up front, as well as try and streamline things, thereby lessening the burden required by both writers and readers.
Basically, we want this to be fun, not a chore.
So, as the first step, if you wish to own a team, I present to you the all new DTL application. (You do not need to fill out this app if you only wish to read and vote on matches.)
Dream Team League Season VII Application
Screen Name:
Co-Owner Screen Name (if applicable):
Team Name:
Major Rules:
Teams consist of 5 characters; 2 Ubers, 1 Medium, 2 Regulars (think Superman & Thor, Aquaman & Vision, Batman & Spider-Man).
Characters can come from mainstream Marvel and DC universes including Vertigo and Wildstorm. No Amalgam.
Characters above a certain power level are considered too uber and are banned from use. The Silver Surfer and Green Lanterns are towards the top of legal characters.
You can carry a roster of 12 characters to build your team from.
Each week you will write a match of how your team will defeat your opponent's team.
Your teams are allowed 24 hours of prep-time on the battlefield before the fight where they get to see the pictures and names of their opponents. No using any outside resources during prep-time they wouldn't normally have access to.
You will have 2 days and 2 posts to write your prep-time (if any) and battle. Then you will have 1 day and 1 post to write a rebuttal to your opponent.
Then there will be 2 days for readers to vote for who they are most convinced to win.
Then there will be a 2 day break to rest and plan the next week's lineups.
The season will start with a draft, so you will need to create a draft list of potential characters for you team's roster.
You must be willing to commit to at least 12-14 weeks of play.
There will be at least two bye weeks without play to rest. Extra days for writing and voting may be granted for holidays.
Occasional theme weeks will occur throughout the season to spice things up (special battlegrounds, mind-swapping, regulars only, etc...)
In all matters, final decision rests solely with the Commissioner and are final.
Sign your screen name here to indicate you have read and agree to these, and all other, rules:
What can you bring to the game (two full sentences, minimum):
Do you have any ideas or suggestions (not required):
What days are you most likely to be able to write and read (weekends only, weekdays only, any day, specific days, etc...):
We're looking for either 8, 10, or 12 teams this season. Previous experience has shown that more teams is not always a better thing, so if there is enough interest to warrant more than 12 teams, we suggest teaming up with another player. Even if you do not get a team, we welcome your participation in reading and voting on matches, as well as joining in with all discussions. And we'll be sure to keep you in mind for next season, or in case a team needs a new owner this season.
You can find a more detailed list of rules used last season here (http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=12926872&postcount=8). There will be an opportunity to discuss possible rule changes before the season starts, so if you have any ideas or questions, feel free to speak up in this thread.
One important rule that will be strictly enforced is NO FLAMING! This became a serious problem in previous seasons. Talking **** is fine. Even arguing is good. But flaming will not be tolerated. First offense will result in a one week suspension and forfeiture of match. Second offense will result in expulsion from the League for the season.

Is this going to be full story format again?
The way I'm seeing it, you can write it however you want. But you only get 2 (maybe 3) posts to tell your prep+battle. So there is a character limit.
And there will only be a single rebuttal for each side, allowing another post for that. I want to try and really streamline this.

You know I'm down. Especially with it being streamlined and set up to kick out the douchewads before they can get settled in.
Time for the Blazing Horde to make their return.

How long must the draft lists be, Wieg? And I take it the draft will be like the old ones, i.e. serpentine style?
And on another note...a trip down memory lane...

Special thanks to Tropico and his genius for making the pic. What would we have done without that Rican bastard. :yay:
Though hopefully a lot of the drama can be cut from this revival.

How long must the draft lists be, Wieg? And I take it the draft will be like the old ones, i.e. serpentine style?
Depends on the number of teams.
For each team in the League, your list should have 12 characters. So for a 10 team league, draftlist should be 120 characters long. (96 for 8 teams, 144 for 12 teams).
Now, this is the minimum you need to guarantee you get a character from your list each round (meaning that even if all the other teams picked characters from your list, you'd still get 12 that you wanted).
I will not accept any draft list with fewer then the minimum. It's a headache that I'm going to avoid. But it's easy to come up with a list that big. The DTL Update thread still has lists of characters of all three power rankings. Hell, in Contest of Marvels, we had draft lists of 512 characters, so you could always pull from that.
Johnny Blaze
10-06-2009, 02:34 PM
Right on. Only negative I can think of in that, is that it may throw some people off having to come up with 120 characters. But that's not really too big of a deal, what with all the lists floating around. And it would also help make sure that only those with definite interest sign up.
You ever send out PMs to some of the old crew, like Corp, Tim, the Hebrew Halfling, and LadyVader?

That you will. With the draft, everybody should have a decent team, and not have to worry about picking up scrap or obscure characters.

I'm in I guess as the CoM seems to be on hold.

10-07-2009, 07:59 AM
Hmm... I'm considering. CoM is on hold for the time being due to lack of interest but it will be restarting soon and I'm not sure if I have the time to handle both. Not to mention me still being in Survivor for up to another 4 or 5 weeks. But I've always loved the DTL even though I've not played since way back in season 2. And the limited rebuttal makes it easier to make time for so there's not pages and pages of rebuttal (might be a decent change to make in future seasons of the Contest of Marvels when/if we have more).
How long are we looking at before this starts up, W?
And this made me want to go back down memory lane a little....

Not sure when it'll start up again. Might not be until the end of the month, depending on how long it takes to get owners and hammer out any rule changes.
Also, when I say streamlined, I mean that entire battles + rebuttals take up a maximum 6-8 posts (3 or 4 posts for each side). So, unless we get tons of votes, battle threads will be a single page long.

That's good. One of the things I always hated was having to sift through pages of ******** arguments over character powers and such to find **** relevant to the actual match.
That, and it will hopefully keep things from getting too heated.

Yeah, if you're on the fence, you aren't being put on the owner list. Once all the slots are filled, you're ****ed.
If owning a team by yourself seems like too much, you can always get with another poster and own a team together.
Remember though, baring any unforeseen circumstances, you're in it for the long haul. This isn't like an RPG where you can sign up for a character and then decide to drop them a few weeks into it. You do that, you **** everything up. So make sure you're in it to win it before committing.

Only two versions of a character can exist.
So if someone has Superman, and someone has Superman Blue, that's two Clark Kents. No more allowed.
But we can have twenty Green Lanterns as long as one is Kyle, one is Alan, one is Kilowag, one is Hal...
Or, I guess, two can be Kyle, two can be Alan, ...

What can you bring to the game (two full sentences, minimum): I'm a DTL veteran and the dirty SOB who started this thing, so I've got a lot of experience on how this **** goes. Just a quick breakdown of how everything works for our new players.
I'll put out a list of all matchups for the season. We'll have a couple of days between matches to finalize what teams we want to use. You'll post your lineup in the Transactions thread (links at the bottom). You and your opponent can keep changing lineups until a certain time at which point the lineups will be locked.
The Transactions thread is also where you'll announce any lineup changes, or if you want to announce trades for characters on other teams.
The Discussion Thread is for general discussion about anything in the game or outside. (Think of it like the Dungeons and Flagons thread, but also with possible DTL discussion).
The Rankings thread is where we talk about what characters should be ranked. It also has pretty good lists of characters of various power levels.
The Update thread houses our rules, as well as lineups, and matches, our win/loss records, and the characters on our teams. It's basically a big FAQ.
We have four threads because, when it was all in one thread, there was so much activity that was very common for important posts to go unnoticed.
Also, each week I'll post the matches. Each match getting their own thread. Owners will have two days to post their battles. On the third day, they can post a rebuttal. Then there will be two days for voting. Then two days to prepare for the next week.
Feel free to look through the DTL sub-forum. I recommend the season 5 battles if you want to look at those. Participation was higher, and their weren't as many arguments (season 6 got nasty at points, which I hope to avoid this time).

It stalled out in Season 4, we had a strong season 5, then season 6 fizzled out.
So did you finish seasons 4 and 6?

Season 4 we cut short and moved right into the playoffs to finish.
6 just died away.

I really think I want to play but I don't want to be one of those people who say I can and end up not doing much due to time restraints. Sucks not knowing my own availability. I hate the idea of sharing a team though :)

The way I'm seeing the season play out, with 8 teams, is that we play everyone once. So that's 7 weeks. We'll take a week off in the middle if needed. A week off before the playoffs, and two weeks of playoffs.
That's 11 weeks tops, with 2 weeks off for rest if we need it. It might go a little longer if we run into the holidays since we grant extra time for those.
If we have more than 8 teams, it might add a couple of weeks. But I'll try to keep it limited to 3 months (including breaks). So I'd guess we'd wrap up the season sometime after New Years.

Well hello again. :) I'm going to consider it. I haven't been reading my comcis like I used to and I think my inspiration might be limited. Not to mention that you know, I enjoy the creative side of it, thinking of strategies, writing the story, but I don't enjoy the combative side of it. Like arguing over every little detail, the last beating Aristotle gave me kinda took the fun out of the whole thing for me. Of course, it has nothing to do with the system itself, but rather the oponents you face. :)
So yeah, I'll consider it.

Would it be possible to not go along with the draft and assemble a team afterwards?
JewishHobbit

Why don't you do the draft and then change tons of it afterwards? That way you might still get a few top players in the process.

While it's still random, I'd be vying for, say, four characters, while everybody else is going for the full twelve (considering I'd be switching a good number out almost immediately anyway). I've already got a bit of my team figured out and I'm willing to take the gamble nobody will pick these guys.
Potentially, I could end up hogging some top-level characters.

Maybe we should go with 3 mini-drafts for Ubers, Med's Regs.
So we'll have a list for each (which means you'll only need your top 8 choices for Meds, for example) Gives us a little better control over drafting our teams.

I just remembered why we never did the draft by rankings. Because people like to have different numbers of characters in each rank.
You know what. Last season, to give the draft some more weight, and expose players to other characters, I think we locked the teams for the first week. It made sure people made their draft lists count.

Had a crazy idea for a theme: Amalgam week.
And it has nothing to do with the Amalgam universe.
I haven't thought about any real details, and it may turn out to be more trouble than it's worth. But the basic idea is that you combine characters on your team into amalgam versions and then battle them against your opponent's amalgamized characters.
Johnny Blaze
10-21-2009, 03:51 PM
Interesting concept. What would the restrictions be? Would the characters you amalgamize have to be the same class? Or could I merge, say, Superman and Spider-Man, for instance?
Also...I take it none of the former players you PMed were interested?
wiegeabo
10-21-2009, 03:58 PM
Except for the Hobbit, I haven't gotten any response back yet.
At first I thought about merging only within class, but then I realized we'd be merging ubers together. Which can be iffy.
Maybe we'd restrict it to a regular, or reg/Med, only fight. And then you can Amalgam within class. So Spider-Wing and AquaVision can fight against BatDevil and the Iron Beetle.

Eh, why cut out the Ubers? Especially when I'm sure there will be a few teams with a few Ubers on their bench.
Just make it so an Uber can only merge with a Reg. That should solve any Tuber problems.

10-21-2009, 04:07 PM
Could do that, but what's the advantage of merging Superman and Spider-Man? Does Supes really need webshooters?
Johnny Blaze
10-21-2009, 04:11 PM
No, but Supes with a Spider-Sense and the enhanced agility would definitely be a plus.
Still, that's only half the point, right? The Amalgam theme would be just as much about being creative and having fun with the pairings as it would be a strategic advantage.
And, as I mentioned above, there'd be a few teams that would have to add characters just for one week since they wouldn't be allowed to use the Ubers on their roster.
Don't be a pussy. If you're going to do it, go balls to the wall.

Just so you guys know, I'm still interested. I'm not sure yet whether I'll join, but i'll decide by the time he show starts. And if I decide I don't have the time to run a team, I've spoken to Ahura and we may share a team.
But the more I think about it the more I think about it the more I realize I miss it, so I'll likely join with my own team.

10-26-2009, 05:29 PM
Ok, since we have five accepted owners, and three on the fence, what if we shoot for a six team season. The benefit is a shorter season, so if our new format doesn't save as much time as we expect, the season won't kill us. It also gives those still on the fence the chance to team up with other owners to share time and get a feel for how we do things. Plus it means a shorter draft list.
At least this way we could get things started up soon.
With six teams, I'm thinking of having two conferences of three teams each, the top two or four teams going to the playoffs. With this methid, we play each team in our conference twice, the other conference once. That's seven matches. Add one or two weeks for breaks if we need them, one or two for playoffs.
Thoughts?

Dream Team League Season VII Application
Screen Name: JewishHobbit
Co-Owner Screen Name (if applicable):
Team Name: The Odd Alliance
JEWISH FREAKING HOBBIT!!!!!

Oh what the heck... I'm in.
Dream Team League Season VII Application
Screen Name: JewishHobbit
Co-Owner Screen Name (if applicable):
Team Name: The Odd Alliance
JEWISH FREAKING HOBBIT!!!!!
What can you bring to the game (two full sentences, minimum):I can bring Marvel expertise and DC Ignorance! I can bring my foot up W's hind quarters!
Do you have any ideas or suggestions (not required): None whatsoever!

Was that really so hard? :)

There, signed!
Oh, and I'm too tired to read through the rules again but I may have overlooked it... is there still rules on how many Marvel and how many DC characters you have to have in your line up or play per week?
As of last season, no. You could have any number from any universe.

Also, to make those draft lists a little more important, I think I'm going to lock the first week of rosters. So whatever team you get after the draft is the one you have to use that first week. You can build you lineup from those 12 characters only.
But don't stress too much about building a draft list. You can probably come up with 20 or thirty characters you'd like on your team of the top of your head in five minutes. The hardest part is usually picking those last few (although you don't need to limit yourself to 72), and figuring out the order.

I'm not even sure I can come up with 20 that I know well enough to make a decent argument in their favor.

Also, I have some questions on character rankings, but I'll post those over in the proper thread. Just FYI. I guess we might as well keep things organized.

Just a list of names in a pm in in the order you want.
Unlike CoM, I do this draft manually since we don't have a definite character list.

So do you give everyone a specific number of Ubers, Mediums, and Regulars or should we be mindful of that as we compose our list so we aren't stuck with tons of Ubers and then minimal of the rest, etc.?

They way I've done it is just go down the list, giving you your next available character regardless of rank. That way you can sort of build your team with the number of each rank you want.

Don't sweat it too much. A good chunk of my DC character knowledge, and most of my Marvel character knowledge, has come from this game. I couldn't believe how much I learned during the first season alone.
The list doesn't have to be all characters you know a ton about. Look at the X-Men books alone. There's gotta be a couple of dozen characters where just knowing about their powerset is enough to use them.
And you can use alternate versions of characters. Convinced someone is going to pick up Superman before you, then just pick up Kal-L instead. Or Superman Blue. Or Superman from Kingdom Come. Afraid someone's going to take Hal Jordan, then just include Kyle, or John, Alan, Guy, Kilowag,... Can't get Bruce Wayne Batman, how about Dick, or Batman 1 million, or even AzBats?

Just so I know if I should keep them grouped by rank or mix them based on how I hope to draft them.

The draft works just like it did in CoM.
Whatever character is at the top of your list that hasn't been taken is the next character I give you. If order doesn't really matter to you after the first 10 or 20 or whatever, then just put them in any order.
There's lots of strategies you could try (like taking lower characters before someone else does just to screw them up, trying to make sure you get a good balance of rankings, ...). But really, don't worry about killing yourself over sorting. The draft is mostly to try and get a few characters you really want first, then some nice-to-haves later on. And they'll be the occasional character you add that you don't know much about, but turn out to be kick-ass once you start looking into them. Those are the real gems.

10-29-2009, 06:42 PM
No. It has to be from one of DC's 52 Earth's, or a main Marvel universe.
Also, we have a 3 issue rule (I think it used to be 1 issue, but I'm making it 3). Basically, your character has to be well-defined through at least 3 issues. No using Validus with a GL ring who appeared in the background of a single panel.

My list on the last page has characters in random order ranked, though a few probably need to be changed around (something Wieg can do). Also, there's the DTL Rankings Thread that has dozens of characters separated ranked as well.
Really, with all the lists out there, it shouldn't be hard coming up with 72 characters. The hard part is putting them in the order you'd like them in.

Dang... really? That eliminates two of my top spots!
So can I not use Hal Jordan when he has both the Green and the Blue ring recently. It was for 2 issues total, though only the last panel or so of the first issue. And the version of Superman I chose was from a oneshot but it's not hard to picture Clark Kent with Batman's upbringing and origin. The issue lays it out very clearly.
Are both of those out?

Jordan, yeah. I've read both. And while he had the ring for a couple of issues, he really didn't have any control. There's no good idea what someone with both rings can and can't do, or what they're weak/strong against.
As for Speeding Bullets Superman (I'm guessing that the version? Kal-El raised as Bruce Wayne?), no under the 3 issue rule. I know this eliminates a ton of Elseworlds/What ifs, but even the well defined characters in those books can leave a lot in question. And were a source of endless arguments. Now, seeing as how we're seriously shortening the arguments this season, maybe thats not such a big deal.

Wildstorm and Vertigo are allowed because their part of DC's 52 universe multi-verse. Is Malibu inside the Marvel Multi-verse (does it have a number like 616?)
JewishHobbit

Hey wait a minute! Hal had the Blue ring from issue 38-42... that's 5 issues, so he still counts!
And whiel we don't know much of what the Blue Ring can do, the main benefit it has is that it keeps Hal's Green Ring charged at 100% at all times. That's the main thing I like about it. Besides that it also purges the corruption of the Red Ring, though I doubt that'll be much of an issue in the DTL. There was the deal when he finally figured out how to use it and took out Larfleeze, but that wasn't fleshed out at all and I don't think it'll ever come up for any reason in the DTL either.
So yeah, it's mostly just a 100% charged Hal is all the benefit is.

Yes it is, and yes it does. Don't recall the number right now but it is a part of their mutliverse. Once Marvel bought them back in the 90's they were intermingled a bit (such as Juggernaut and Black Knight going to their universe, etc.) Eventually things were fixed, but they remain connected to the Marvel Universe, just unvisited due to some legal issues Quesada says exist, though Malibu people say don't.

True, which isn't so bad. And if it was just, there probably wouldn't really be a problem.
But the Blue Ring wasn't meant for Hal. He spent all but the last of those issues struggling with the ring, and once he actually hoped for something with sincerity, he got to access the Blue's power in some undefined way. And once depleted, it left him. I just don't like that level of uncertainty.

Yeah, I can understand that.
I'm still upset about the Batman (Speeding Bullets) not counting though. I was excited about that one.
Oneshot was cool as can be! Not to mention it's Superman with a bit of a dark edge... and everyone seeing him woudl assume some variant of Batman, not a darker Superman... so there's all kinds of goodies that can be played with against other teams there.

How big of a graphic novel are we talking? The Batman: Speeding Bullets one was a trade but it was small, like maybe Killing Joke size. I doubt that'd fly, but I can't really think of any Graphic Novels not based on individual comics that'd be much thicker.

Getting a little more interested? Then come by the Discussion thread in the DTL forum. The team you would be taking over is AnnoyingSilence. But you can customize the team however you want if you join up. Also, feel free to check out the battle threads for this season to get a feel for how everything works.
