Spielberg is great but too often does he make movies with stupid children in them. And he seems to think the more retarded the child behaves the more adorable and natural he/she is.
Spielberg would win an entire tournament. It's better just to leave him out and give others a chance to play.

Spielberg, not only has he a high batting average, but he's touched pretty much every genre and has provided a game changer film. From sci-fi, to horror to adventure to drama, to spy/thriller and wherever else he's made his mark and many of his films stand above most guys specifically known for that genre.
Spielberg definately. I like James Cameron a lot, but when you compare their most famous films, there's no contest.
Spielberg: Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones trilogy, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Hook, AI, ET.
Cameron: Aliens, T2, Titanic, True Lies, the Abyss.
But to Camerons defense though, Spielberg has a much larger resume.

I think Spielberg has made a lot more poor films than James Cameron has, its hard to compare them though as Cameron has made so few movies compared to Spielberg. I personally think no Spielberg movie is as good as Aliens, The Terminator and T2:Judgement Day respectively.

While I don't like the birds and I hate the second half of Psycho(its just felt flat after the wonderful first half) I do love Rear Window.
Now Kubrick. I dig Dr.Stragelove, and I find the shining to be a wonderful comedy.
Hitchcock gets my vote. He just knew how to work it. While Kubrick was good, I don't think he was that good.

ZemeckisOh yeah, screw Heavenly Creatures, King Kong, Dead Alive, and the Frighteners. And Forrest Gump is laughable. How is Zemeckis more diverse? You got it completely backwards. Zemeckis' forays into technological/special effects "revolutions" are almost always ho-hum at best and drivel at worst. He's got Back to the Future, Beowulf, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Back to the Future II and Cast Away are middling. If Forrest Gump, Polar Express, Contact, What Lies Beneath, Death Becomes Her, and Back to the Future III are your idea of good films then I'm not sure what to say.
Meanwhile Jackson has King Kong, The Frighteners, DeadAlive, and Heavenly Creatures on top of the LOTR movies. The deck is heavily stacked.
MessiahDecoy123
11-16-2009, 11:22 PM
Forrest Gump is a better movie than King Kong or the Frighteners.
King Kong is just a silly movie. And the Frighteners is forgettable, no better than Death Becomes Her.
Back to the Future and Roger Rabbit are timeless classics. Few directors make one, let alone two, of those.

Shouldn't it be more like George Lucas vs Peter Jackson? Or Francis Ford Coppola vs Martin Scorcese? Or Mel Gibson vs Clint Eastwood? Seems like people could think about these matchups a little more, pitting directors with a common vision against one another.

I think what makes it interesting is when you have directors with differing styles but equal esteem/reputation going up against one another. It forces people to really think what makes one director better than the other. If you have comparable directors, in some cases, it just becomes a matter of "well, whose movies did I like more?" because the style and everything is virtually the same.
Oh, btw I say Nolan.
So that's 3 - Nolan, 2 - Fincher.

Emmerich. This man made some great blockbusters

-Godzilla:Yeah someone likes it. No, I love it. I could watch it all the time, and still enjoy the other Godzilla movies just as much.

Ugh...
Emmerich I suppose.
Stargate is better than anything Bay has ever done.
That said Bay is probably more consistent... all of his films are the same level of piffle, lowest common denominator garbage but relatively watchable (even if you wish certain characters would die or suffer incredibly, when they're supposed to be characters you should feel sympathetic for...) where Emmerich can be up and down... sometimes within minutes...
I can see this being an age thing where some of the olders will vote for Emerich and the kids going Bay... ID4 was IMMENSE when I was in school.

Stargate is his only good movie. Bay's mediocre movies are way more watchable than Emmerich's.
Im the opposite, I can barely sit through, Bays movies. The Rock and Bad Boys were the closest I've ever been to being physically tourtured. Thankfully I turned Bad Boys off before it killed me, and I shudder to think what will happen if I watched Bad Boys 2. And Armageddon, and The Island seem to be the few blockbusters that can put me to sleep.

I dunno the first half of Bad Boys 2 I enjoyed over the whole of the first Bad Boys (which I don't think much of) but the second half just got ridiculously preposterously dull (if that makes sense), at least the first half was preposterous fun. Worth watching for some of the action sequences if you got a spare night with nothing to do.
Okay, next showdown:
Frank Darabont vs. Darren Aronofsky
Well, Shawshank is one of the best movies of all time, so I gotta go Darabont. I did pick up The Fountain for $5 at Best Buy this weekend though, lol.

Hmm I've never seen a Darren Aronofsky movie. And for Darabont I find the green mile annoying(due to the constant plays on tv), The Mist ending loltastic, and The Majestic puts me to sleep. Not to mention his screenplays for some movies I didn't like. Shawshank I havne't seen in years.
So Darabont. Only cus I haven't see any of Aronofskys work.

Frank Darabont anyday, love his movies, Shawshank, Green Mile, & The Mist all make it into my top 50 movies, first two make it into my top 20. I haven't loved a Aronofsky movie yet, Wrester was great & Fountain had merits, I'm not a fan of Requiem though.

Yeah, his visual style/use of atmosphere is awesome. :awesome:
The visual style/use of atmosphere he used for Batman was the most accurate to the comics plus Danny Elfman and Anton Furst should also get credit for all that to fall into place.
Gotham City was originally Gothic looking in the comics and afterwards it started to depend on the creative teams, for example Neal Adams brought it back in the 1970's with writer Dennis O'Neil.
And yeah, Burton is more consistent because he has way more amounts of great work in his filmography.

I know the vote is over , but my take on that particular bout is that Gilliam could have made any movie Burton has, but no way Burton could have made Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Brazil.
Burton wishes he could make them like Gilliam at his best.
and on Darabont vs Darren A.. I can't believe a guy who follows the formula of adapting Stephen King books beat a guy who has pushed himself creatively with each successive movie and has proved to be being genuinely innovative. sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Apart from the actors, Fear and Loathing wasn't very good. I haven't seen Brazil but once many many years ago so I can't share my opinion. I'll only say that there might be a reason why I have been never interested in watching it a second time.

Well, if you don't like the book you won't like the movie, because it was a good adaptation, but cinematically, it's a visual feast, probably his best one visually.
I used to have Brazil on tape but have not seen it for a while, but it's a very unique movie, and the dream sequences come across as very strange as opposed to self conciously trying to be strange, like many do.
