Glad I could help. There's a few others that might be good for you. Drax had a mini a bit before Annihilation, which will explain his new appearance and personality. Thanos also had a series that leads right into Annihilation. It should only be about two trades. It's quite a bit of stuff, but hey, that's comics. An expensive, addictive habit that should probably be outlawed.
I hear that, got about 24 trades on my wishlist at Amazon with a number of others preordered.
I take it this is the Drax mini?

I had a question if these tpb's were in the proper order. I haven't read all of them yet but this is the order I have them in.
Annihilation(has one of the first battles between Thanos and Drax as well as the origin/beginning of Warlock)
Rebirth of Thanos
Secret Wars
Infinity Gauntlet
Infinity War
Avengers Disassembled
House of M
Civil War
Siege
Death of Captain America
World War Hulk
I've already read Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet/War, Avengers Disassembled, Civil War and World War Hulk.
Annihilation Classic (has stories from various years, so you can basically put it wherever you want)
Secret Wars
Silver Surfer: The Rebirth of Thanos
Infinity Gauntlet
Infinity War
Avengers Disassembled
House of M
Civil War
Death of Captain America
World War Hulk
Siege
DawnWarrior

You probably want to add Secret Invasion to that reading list, right between World War Hulk and Siege.
You probably want to add Secret Invasion to that reading list, right between World War Hulk and Siege.
Those were just the books I already own. I preordered the Hardcover copy of Secret Invasion from Amazon. It says it comes out in September but still doesn't have a pic for it which means it might get pushed back since it's possible it's not even finished being put together.
Once again thanks for the help everyone! I've been trying to catch up in the overall Marvel Universe after taking a comic hiatus in the late '90s when I was in highschool and in my early 20's.

Dang. Long time off.
Dang. Long time off.
Yeah. I started collecting comics with my two good friends around 4th-5th grade when we all had paper routes. Collected them up through middle school then sort of got bored/wanted to spend my money on other things when I got into high school.
Around 2003 or 2004 when X-men 2 came out is when I realized how much I missed a lot of comic characters I used to read and I kind of needed something to do with my time at that age so I got back into them. Kind of sucks because when I stopped in high school I got rid of a fair amount of them because I thought I would be done with them for the rest of my life and had to rebuy a lot of issues. That's also one of the main reasons I buy tpb's more than single issues.

And what are some really good Avengers trade paperbacks to pick up?

Did you read Oeming's Ragnarok story? Or Blood Oath? How about Jurgens run that had death of Odin, Spiral, and the Reigning? Walt Simonson's epic run? And hell, if it's out yet, the guy currently writing Thor is doing pretty awesome. Some would say better than JMS. Guillen I think his name is.
Oh and Avengers, Avengers Forever and Busiek's run which is collected in four hardcovers called Avengers Assemble. Also, Joe Casey's amazing minis, Earth's Mightiest Heroes 1 and 2.
TheCorpulent1

Kieron Gillen is the current writer's name. It looks like his run will be divided into three trades. The Latverian Prometheus is already out in paperback, Siege: Thor comes out in September in hardcover and January in paperback, and Thor: Siege Aftermath comes out in November in paperback. Not sure why the second takes so long to get its paperback edition out.
Son of Asgard is also getting a trade release toward the end of this month or early September. All 12 issues in a full-size trade, after they were previously only available in 2 separate digests. Definitely worth reading if you've ever wanted to see Thor, Balder, Sif, Loki, et al. as younger gods, when the full-on conflicts of later days were more like schoolyard rivalries, Thor was still trying to prove himself worthy of Mjolnir, and Volstagg was actually a more serious warrior. :)

I've read the Walt Simonson run (loved it except for Thor turning into a frog, that was just stupid), Thor: Ages of Thunder (I'd rather see that as a DVD than teen/tween Thor - I'm guessing the young Thor DVD won't come out until next year) and the Eternals Saga (which ends with hilarious panel of Sif sitting on Thor's lap cheerfully pouring beer into his mouth while he gropes her leg), and currently up to volume 3 of the JMS run, but have not read the others you mentioned. Is Oeming's Ragnarok the story that precedes JMS's run?
Was Jurgens the one who had Thor merge with a medic named Jake Olson (or however it was spelled)?
Oh and Avengers, Avengers Forever and Busiek's run which is collected in four hardcovers called Avengers Assemble. Also, Joe Casey's amazing minis, Earth's Mightiest Heroes 1 and 2.
Okay, will look for those.

I was actually looking at Latverian Prometheus last night on Amazon, how's Gillen's run been?

I was also looking at those 2 separate digests as well, and debating if I wanted to get them in digest form or not, since Amazon has never posted anything indicating a bigger, more complete release.
And you know one thing I don't get? Why were the first three volumes of X-Men: First Class released in proper paperback/hardcover form but volume 4 was released in mini-digest size?
Has anyone else noticed that Balder the Brave is absent from the upcoming Thor film?
Finished Captain America: Red Menace. Did Civil War follow that or is there anything in between?
TheCorpulent1
08-17-2010, 10:06 AM
I've noticed that Balder's absent. I've noticed the hell out of that. But I'm trying to be content with all of the stuff we are getting in it.
Oeming's "Ragnarok" is indeed the story that precedes JMS' run. It's basically a bridge between Jurgens' run, where Odin dies and Thor becomes king, and JMS' run, where the Asgardians come back from Ragnarok and Thor sets them on a new course, breaking with all of their traditions.
Jurgens was indeed the one who had Thor merge with Jake Olson. Jake goes away about halfway through Jurgens' run, though (sooner, technically, but that's a long story).
Gillen's run has been pretty great. "The Latverian Prometheus" was great, his Siege tie-in was good, and his current arc where Thor has to go to Mephisto's realm to save the souls of the Asgardians who died in Siege has been great so far.

How do you shut off Iron Man's armor? Since his modern armor is all nanonites and stuff inside his body, can you inject anything in him? Or has the "Extremis" made his skin invulnurable againts anti-nanonite shots unless the force is great enough? Like shooting a damn anti-nanonite injection.

Yes, it is. It covers #26-35. The US version is in Marvel's November solicitations:
THOR: ACROSS ALL WORLDS TPB
Written by DAN JURGENS
Penciled by ANDY KUBERT
Cover by ANDY KUBERT
Thor, god of Thunder, is a god with more than a passing interest in the doings on Midgard (Earth to you and me). His sense of duty and morality forces Thor to merge his life-spirit into the mortal body of paramedic Jake Olson. Thus, he finds himself a god divided, with loyalties to the court of Odin, ruler of the Norse Gods, and as a man with obligations to friends and family. This powerfully told story follows the attempt by Lord Malekith the Dark Elf to take over Asgard by unleashing the immeasurable power contained within the Cask of Ancient Winters. With Thor tending to matters on Earth and mighty Odin undergoing the necessary Odinsleep to renew his powers, it falls to Lady Sif to rule and protect the Realm Eternal. Sensing opportunity, Ulik, leader of the Trolls, also decides the time has come to ravage Asgard, so the gods themselves have their hands full. Collecting THOR (1998) #26-35.

Odin dies in #40 and Thor mourns for a few issues, then takes over as king at the end of #44 (which was a "silent" issue because of this 'Nuff Said gimmick Marvel was doing for that month, so it has no dialogue--but it's done well enough that it doesn't need any).

Yeah, Marvel really seems to be getting behind the idea that the entire Jurgens run should be available. It always confused me that they didn't release trades for it before. There were only a few scattered arcs available. I'm gonna make an effort to buy all of them, since I'd like to reread Jurgens' run but I wouldn't want to go searching through all my old comics to find it.

How come the Hulk was never really put back on the Avengers???
Even as a kid I wondered.Especially when he joined the Defenders.
I was like hold up he can't be in the Avengers but he can be in the Avengers. Why?????
Anyone?
Even when he had Banner's mind or was the Professor Hulk he wasn't put back on the team!
Why???
I always wondered why Marvel has always chosen this route.
At first I kind of understood about him being a loose canon but then to see him on the Defenders,Alternate Fantastic Four,Parthenon etc.etc.
Anyone????
Eh i feel this question would suit the Avengers thread (http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=336250&page=21) or Hulk thread (http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=324638&page=92).
Well Red Hulk is joining the Avengers. Hulk is getting his own Hulk team. Ultimate Avengers has a clone of Bruce Banner, because the real Bruce is teaming up with mutants.

It happened during JMS' FF run. It was pretty meh, (much like JMS' entire run on FF) I think Hulk stumbled on Hydra doing something, they blew some s**t up, and made a Savage Grey Hulk. Thing won, but not because he kicked his ass or anything....the whole thing is rather fuzzy.
TheCorpulent1
08-24-2010, 03:45 PM
I only read JMS' arc with Thor's hammer, but that was meh even to me. Doom tries to lift it and obviously fails, the FF kick his ass again, Blake shows up, the end. It was a pretty worthless story that had nothing to do with anything beyond JMS wanting to set up a mystery with Mjolnir and its 'new' owner, I think.

I think that's one of the reasons I can't get into FF these days. The roster never changes, there's no real mystery to anyone in the group, they all get along fine (as well as you'd expect a family to), and they don't need to ever introduce new bad guys because there's plenty from the old days still around. I guess I just feel like nothing substantial will ever happen in that book, no matter what cosmic, cross-dimensional adventures they embark on. Even if the writing and the art are excellent, it'll always be a throwback to me. Though I can understand people who would like that stuff.

Best you could do is check out some of the various books the characters showed up in after the series ended. Like Loners, that story arc in Runaways where the Loners first appeared, Wolverine Enemy of the State where Hornet got killed off panel cuz Millar just needed to off a guy. :o I guess Civil War when whats his face got drunk and promptly owned by Iron Man. I think Dusk showed up in some book as a super prostitute or something. Best to ignore that one.

Avengers: The Initiative, Runaways, and The Loners are really all you need for the further adventures of the Slingers. Best to just forget about "Enemy of the State" (and everything else from Millar) and that Ms. Marvel junk.

I wasn't counting that because it literally just happened.
It depends on the series and the month. Just in April, these were the numbers
New Avengers - 75,430
Uncanny Xmen - 74,090
X-Force - 62,000
Xmen Legacy - 60,649
Mighty Avengers - 50,252
Its flip flopped several times over the past several years. While the Avengers line has tended to do better for the most part, the X-line has put out relatively decent numbers and Morrison wasnt the last time their core titles beat out the Avenger core titles

Yep. The two main instances I can think of are during Warren Ellis' run and during Dan Jurgens' King Thor Saga.
Iron Man
09-13-2010, 11:18 AM
How exactly did they move on? I can't imagine Thor actually having a proper relationship with her. (Reason for my asking is I'm rereading the original Secret Wars, and they piqued my interest.)
TheCorpulent1
09-13-2010, 11:30 AM
During Ellis' run, Yggdrasil (the "World Ash" that connects all of the Nine Worlds and is part of the fundamental nature of the Asgardian gods' being) died and the gods lost their divinity. Thor needed doses of the Enchantress' magic regularly to keep his powers up in spite fo Yggdrasil's death and a relationship formed between them. It's been a while since I read it so I'm not 100% sure it was explicitly stated that they were having sex, but I recall a very heavy implication, at least.
During Jurgens' run, Thor literally loses his humanity. Jake Olson, his human persona at the time, was separated from him, taking with it Thor's human perspective. Convinced that the gods should do more for humanity while missing the point that humanity needs to do for itself in order to grow and truly thrive, he started performing "miracles" on Earth, moved Asgard to hover over Manhattan, and eventually wound up taking over the whole world in a future that was ultimately erased. While in this state, he took the Enchantress as his wife and, in that future, even had a son named Magni with her.

They didnt have a relationship. I think you might be referring to UXM 450 from CC run. The two went out to a Broadway play together. That was the beginning and end of it. CC also hinted at a Kurt/Rachel pairing in that issue. And a few issues before both of these, Kurt and Storm went out for dancing together. Yes. It was a solid mini-series that dealt with Clint and Bobbi's past relationship, Bobbi's time with the Skrulls, and one of the major themes McCann has carried into Hawkeye & Mockingbird. Not absolutely essential reading, but it was a good mini that gives you some context for how Clint and Bobbie relate to each other in the current series.

And then if I want to search for the next issue in a series, I have to do the whole google thing again. Does anyone know a better way? Or how do you guys keep track of which issues are out and everything?
Oh btw, DC's website is sooooo much better. At the page for each issue there's this overview thingy which shows you the covers of two future issues and two past issues. And then there's a page where all the books for the whole month is listed nicely by the week. Whoever designed that should get a pat on the back.

You're over thinking it. Some artists like to draw him with a pooch, and some don't. Same reason some artists go nuts with the chain mail on Caps suit, or in the 80's the Blue Beetle's physique fluctuated between Spider-Man like to pudgy Brock Samson. Creative types just luvs putting their own stamp on things.

Not that I recall.
I was wondering how tall an Omnibus is? I have a damn good collection of Marvel Masterworks hardbound books for my favorite characters like Spider-Man, X-men/Uncanny and Iron Man. I was thinking of getting some classic Thor before I read the later years but wasn't sure if the Omnibus would fit on my shelf. I'm mainly wondering how much taller are they compared to a regular hardbound book.
I was having trouble looking for a size comparison on Google.

I have the Captain Britain Omnibus and it's a little taller than the regular hardcovers I have. I'm kind of awful with dimensions, but I'm going to wager about an inch taller or something.
I can't rip pictures off my phone to my computer or I would show you, but I did find this picture that may help:

Not sure if that a Marvel HC it's sitting beside, but I think Marvel's paperback trades tend to be roughly the same size.

Unless your Marvel Masterworks are just barely short enough to fit on the shelf, you should be able to fit omnibuses on there with them.

I got some good room left with the MM so I might just preorder those 3 Thor Omnibus books. I definitely want to read the classics first.

Not really a comics question... but does anyone else find the Marvel online catalog very user UNfriendly?
I tried to search for stuff but I cant find what I want. I ended up going to google and searching for eg. "Hawkeye & Mockingbird #4 marvel catalog" and then clicking the link and I have to do that for every issue I want to find.
Y'know, I'm finding the same thing, but while I can handle the week-to-week grind of the comics catalogue, it's even worse with the cartoons. Marvel's posted full episodes of a lot of their cartoons on the site, but I can't just go, say, to the "Silver Surfer" cartoon section and page down to the episode where Thanos first appears. What's the point of having all those cartoons archived on there if I have to go around the back and consult a third party just to find the one I want?

1) Taskmaster, Shang Chi, Daredevil, Black Panther, Baron Zemo to name a few. Two of those dude can or have kicked his ass.
2) 25 physically, sliding time scale of 15 years for the MU from FF flight to present so he went in the water in 1945 came out 15 years ago from today so, he got thawed in 1995, 1995-1945= 50 +25=75. So, he was 75 years old when they thawed him out.
3) He joined the X-Men after his partner Black Tom Cassidy became a Tree Wizard or something, developed a special friendship with a fish boy, had his powers stripped down by the violence loving God who empowers him because he isn't doing the job he wants him to, joined Excalibur for awhile, then Hulk came back from outer space to beat the crap outta his cripple brother, made a deal with Cytorak to be a douche again, got outsmarted by the Hulk, then somehow ended up in prison, minus all his power again, taking orders from Luke Cage with the new Thunderbolts.

I can't for the life of me remember if I've asked this for, so apologies in advance. I'm curious about Mr. Fantastic's bodily functions. Is it that his body just resembles rubber in terms of elasticity? He's not actually vulnerable to any heat source right? I know in Ultimate it documented that his bodily functions radically altered, but in 616 does he still have bones, a digestive system, etc? I know he can bleed because Wolverine did crack him in the nose during that old FF/X-men special from ages ago. I've seen him bearded before, but is his hair like normal hair, or is all of him malleable? I just saw a bunch of Venture bros episodes (one had Mr. Impossible) and was wondering how he goes about shaving and stuff like that heh.
Thanks in advance guys.
Anubis

He's not made of rubber. As far as I know he grows hair, poops, manscapes, all that stuff. How? Well, that ultimately comes down to the fact that it's a comic book and you shouldn't think about it too much.

You need to think of the FF in terms of the way they were created. They're basically elemental powers. Human Torch for fire, Thing for Earth, Invisible Woman for Air and Mr. Fantastic for water. For some reason some of them have a high level of their cosmic powers like the Invisible Woman or Human Torch. Others have high levels but cannot control them such as Thing or X-Ray/Vapor from the U-Foes. Mr. Fantastic seems to have moderate control as he can form his body into something that resembles rubber in a way but it's more that he can make his form into almost a liquid, making him uncuttable and almost impossible to damage. When he uses that he can look like whatever he wants or alter his density to one part to hit hard and such. But he can also not use the power which makes him basically human and therefore vulnerable to getting cut or beaten up.

How did Wolverine first join the X-Men? In the recent Wolverine Saga thingy, it says that Wolverine was sent to kill Xavier, and thats how he met the X-men. But in Giant X-Men, didnt Xavier personally approach Wolverine? I'm confused... which is the correct version, or did they both happen?
TheCorpulent1

As far as I know, Xavier just went to Department H in Canada and recruited Wolverine. But X-Men comics, even more than other superhero comics, are the land of retcons, so it could've changed at some point.
Havok83

Wikipedia shows that there was a retcon in the Origins series. Wolverine was apparently sent to kill Xavier and Xavier mindwiped him, making him forget that event. By the time he needed to assemble a new team of X-men, he remembered Wolveine and went to him to give him a chance to do good as part of his team of mutants. Not surprised bc Marvel has been retconning stuff regarding Xavier for the past 5 years.

The original story was that Xavier went and recruited Logan from Department H, but there was a crappy recent retcon - I can't remember who wrote it, but I remember reading about it - where Logan was sent to kill him. Xavier then mind-wiped him and planted a willingness to join the X-Men in his head. :whatever:

Well, he didn't stop time so much as stop all of the people for a moment. He can definitely do that in the comics--just stop people's minds in a limited area so no one's able to think or do anything.

pretty much all powerful telepaths can wipe minds. Xavier most definetly can. Its what he did to Magneto in Fatal Attractions (with a little help from Jean)

yeah this one really bothers me. Im all about free will and if someone is to be an X-man it should be their choice. One of the biggest problems I had with Vanisher on X-force (as much as I loved him there) was that they threatened to kill him if he wasnt. I dont like the idea of Xavier using his powers to make anyone follow and fight for him. Thats a line that shouldnt have ben crossed. Telepaths pretty much have the power to do whatever they want as you cant trust yourself around them. Xavier always had strong ethics about not abusing that power, which he passed down to his students with that ability, such as not reading minds without permission, influencing others, etc... And now look at how he's used his.

Man am I the only one who's sick and tired of them trying to write Xavier as this morally scuzzy cueball? Maybe it's because I got into X-men with the cartoon and there Xavier was portrayed as a selfless man who wanted change. I can understand flaws in a character to make them interesting and have depth, but it's gone too far in my opinion. It's just really off for me.

Well, back before M-Day and all that junk, ol' Charles was revealed to have a spy network. It was never revealed just how far his network extended, but I know it included Sage, a guy with shrinking powers named Shortpack, and Mystique for a brief period of time.
My idea would be to revive Xavier's old spy network, and expand on it big time. I wouldn't go for odd reveals like "LOL, Sebastian Shaw's sidekick was in Chuck's pocket the whole time," but I'd bring back a lot forgotten and obscure characters to be Charles' eyes and ears around the world. If you ever read Warren Ellis' Global Frequency, it'd be a lot like that.
Of course, I'd have a regular cast of characters-- Charles' main field operatives. I know I'd used Iceman and Husk because I feel like they're underused nowadays, but I don't know who else I'd use. Probably Shadowcat and/or Cipher.
God, I haven't been so tempted to write a fan fiction in years.

Is does kind of strike me as high concept, but no, not like Morrison. It's much more grounded, I think. Some people have been having a hard time keeping up with it, though, so I could be wrong. I'll admit, it did kind of prick me at first, but I've come to like the idea. I think it's fascinating that we have this universe that's so strange and filled with superpowered beings, Gods, aliens, time travel, etc., and kind of zooming out to see that it's always been a strange place filled with these things to some degree or another for forever. I can understand why it turns some off from a continuity aspect, but I'm just kind of looking at it as a 'Well, it could be...' type of deal, since I don't see any of this stuff being referenced much (if any) outside Hickman's own work

10-06-2010, 09:54 PM
Marvel had the rights to publish Godzilla comics in the 70s. The stories in it were cannon in the Marvel Universe, and SHIELD regularly tried to kill or capture Godzilla. Marvel lost the rights. The stories are still cannon, but they can never mention the monster by name. How come they never simply retconned it to having been Fin Fang Foom?
TheCorpulent1
