The year is 2389, and much has changed in the galaxy.

After the Federation's help in stopping the Reman rebel, Shinzon, and saving the Romulan Empire, a new accord was reached between the two former enemies. The Romulan High Council and the United Federation of Planets agreed to try and put an end to hostilities, beginning with allowing trade between the two cultures. Captain William T. Riker, of the USS Titan, has spearheaded the talks between the two people and was the first Federation officer to set foot on the new Federation Embassy on Romulus. Although not officially the ambassador, Riker remains the most respected Federation personality in the Romulan Empire, and is the Federation's main spokesperson to Romulus.
Though, in the year 2387, a great tragedy struck the Romulan Star Empire when the star of Romulus' system went nova and obliterated the Romulan homeworld. With help from the Federation, the Romulans were able to evacuate many from the planet before it's destruction. Even still, millions of lives were lost in the catastrophic event.

The Klingon Empire, under the leadership of the aging Chancellor Martok, has been vocally against this new partnership. While maintaining their alliance with the Federation, the Klingons have slowly drawn back into a reclusive shell, leading some in the Federation to believe that the warrior race may once more return to it's old ways of conquest and war. The Klingon's Supreme General, and former Federation Ambassador, Worf, is torn between his past with the Federation and his new life among his people. Though he still has many ties to the United Federation of Planets, Worf will do what is necessary to protect the Empire's honor and it's people, even if it means going to war with old friends.

After their heavy losses at the end of the Dominion War, the Cardassians have become a fraction of what they once were. Over 800 million lives were lost on Cardassia alone, and the once proud people, staring uncertainty in the face, have been forced to seek aid from the Federation and Klingon Empire. With the tensions growing between the Federation and the Klingons, the Cardassians have remained neutral as they quietly keep a sharp eye on how those tensions evolve. They know that one day, they may be forced to take a side, so they are secretly rebuilding their defenses and armada to prepare for that day.

The Dominion still remains at peace with the races and factions of the Alpha Quadrant, but it is a shaky peace as there remains many on both sides who still are bitter and resentful of the other after the end of the Dominion War. The Dominion's presence in the Alpha Quadrant is relegated to a single embassy on the space station, DS-9, with their empire in the Gamma Quadrant still intact. Former DS-9 security chief Odo, after having rejoined his fellow Changelings, has been the one trying desperately to keep the peace between the Federation and the Dominion, and has finally convinced his fellow Founders to allow a United Federation of Planets delegation into the Gamma Quadrant to dissuade their fears of another Dominion attack.

The Borg have remained largely hidden in the Delta Quadrant, but many believe it is only a matter of time before the race once again finds it's way back to the Alpha Quadrant, and once more attempts to assimilate the galaxy. A small Borg faction, led by the Borg known as Hugh, resides on a remote planet in the Alpha Quadrant, and is no longer one with the Collective. Unlike the rest of their race, these Borgs prize their individuality, and, in the year 2387, they were permitted entrance into the United Federation of Planets, with the blessings of Captain Data, who was brought back by Geordi La Forge by downloading Data's memories into the body of the prototype android, B-4.
Hugh and the Borg do not assimilate other species like their counterparts do. Instead, with the help of their liaison, Data, they have spent their time liberating drones from the Borg Collective, making them hated traitors in the eyes of the Borg Queen and their species.

With this being a perilous time for the Federation, Admiral Jean Luc-Picard, with the approval of Starfleet Command, has ordered the commission of a new line of star ships, having a personal hand in the creation of a brand new USS Enterprise. The brand new Enterprise (NCC-1701-F) is the most advanced ship in the Federation, and is the first Federation ship to legally use cloaking technology after a new treaty was reached with the Romulans, nullifying the Federation's cloaking ban from the Treaty of Algeron. Being a high ranking and influential official in the Federation, Admiral Picard has personally set out to hand pick the crew of this new Enterprise from some of the finest officers in all of Star Fleet.

"Morning, sir", the bright-eyed ensign smiled and saluted as Johnathan walked through the corridors of McKinley Station.
Rourke saluted the man and kept on heading towards the designated docking port.
The past ten hours have been a blur. He had arrived at the station and met with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, whom was every bit the charismatic man he had heard so much about from his former captain, William Riker.
John had known all about Starfleet's commission of a new wave of ships. With the growing tensions between the Federation and the Klingons, the fragile peace treaty with the Dominion, and the myriad of other threats in the cosmos, it was a decision he whole-heartedly supported. Granted, their mission was one of exploration, first and foremost. But it didn't hurt to be ready for any possible conflict.

But, Johnathan was caught off guard when Admiral Picard told him of his reassignment. Effective immediately, Johnathan Rourke would be promoted to the rank of Captain, and given command of the Federation's new flagship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-F.
It was the opportunity of a lifetime of hard work for John. He had been hoping to get his own command eventually, but for it to come so quickly, and to be on board the Enterprise...it was an honor Captain Rourke could not refuse.

John stopped as he walked down the corridors nearing the docking arm that lead to his ship. He stared, breathlessly, out of the window at the massive starship resting snugly in port.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/HypsterJB/EnterpriseDocked.jpg

"Amazing", was the word that escaped his lips as he looked out at his new vessel.

"She's a beaut, isn't she?"

Johnathan turned towards the man who had seemingly crept up on him while he was fixated on his new ship.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/HypsterJB/GeordiLaForge2379.jpg

"You must be Captain Rourke", the man smiled as he extended his hand.
"Commander LaForge, at your service."

"Yes, I know who you are, Commander", Rourke replied as he shook the man's hand.
"I've heard a lot about you from Captain Riker. You're one of the best engineers in all of Starfleet."

"Well, I don't like to brag", he smirked as he turned his attention to the starship just outside the window.
"I did most of the design work myself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what she's capable of. She's one of the fastest ships in the fleet, not to mention the first to carry Federation cloaking technology. I gotta say...part of me envies you."

"Really? And why's that?"

"Because I'm stuck here, going over reports and overseeing engineering projects from Starfleet Command. I'd much rather be out there, where you're going. Out into the unknown...I miss that", Geordi said, as if recalling memories past as he looked out at his handiwork.

"Whatever you do, take good care of her", Commander LaForge said as he turned back to the Captain.
"Treat her like the lady she is, and she'll never do you wrong."

"Don't worry, Commander", Rourke grinned.
"She's in good hands."

"From what Will's told me, I believe you. Now, let's get you to your ship, Captain", Geordi said as he motioned for Rourke to follow him.

Johnathan followed Commander LaForge through the corridor and into the docking arm connecting the station to the Enterprise.
Commander LaForge and Captain Rourke parted ways, and the Captain entered his ship quietly taking it all in as he made his way straight to the bridge. As the turbolift doors opened, the Captain was greeted by some of the crewmen going over last minute diagnostics and prep before the launch.

"Please, don't let me keep you from your work. We're scheduled to depart in an hour, so I want all systems in working order", Rourke said after a salute as the crew went back to their work.

Moving to the captain's chair, Rourke gently brushed his fingers across the brand new leather.
His mouth creased into a barely visible smile as he looked across the bridge of his starship. The brand new U.S.S. Enterprise.

"I'll be in my ready room if anyone needs me", the Captain stated before entering his room adjacent to the bridge.
Moving to his desk, Johnathan sat down, looking around and taking it all in. He had an hour to kill before launch, so he leaned forward and activated the ships computer, bringing up the personnel files of the ship's command crew.
It would be good to get to know who was serving under his command, after all.
So, the Captain went about reviewing the crewmen's files as time slowly ticked away on the large grandfather clock in the room's corner.

First Officer's log: Stardate 65021.3

These last ten years have been nothing like I expected. I had been hoping for a nice and quiet, but not too boring, stint on Deep Space Nine to end my career. It was also a last chance to reunite with Prynn and hopefully work out our issues.

Well, it certainly hasn't been boring. Anything but. And my relationship with Prynn has never been closer. I've never felt so...satisfied with my life. For the first time in decades I wake up each morning looking forward to what may come. It's a long way from the contemplations of ending it all after I lost Ruriko.

And in three days, the Defiant launches back through the wormhole. I will captain the ship as we escort the Federation delegation that will meet with Odo and the other Founders. And I'm excited at the prospect. I've seen far too many years of war. The chance to make peace instead is one I look forward to.

The computer terminal on my desk bleeps about an incoming message. "End log," I say to it as I take a seat.

I type in a command, and the message pops up. I smile as I see who it's from...but my face quickly drops as I read on. I've barely finished reading when I march out the door, angry, and feeling like I could bite through a bulkhead.

"Ent-"

I barge into the General's office, barley giving the computer time to signal my presence, or her the time to give me permission to enter.

"Command-"

"What the hell is this about?!" I say, slamming the padd onto her desk.

Glancing at the padd, she picks up the baseball that sits on the desktop and tosses it between her hands. "I just found out about it myself. I was going to tell you personally..."

"Well, apparently, he didn't feel like waiting for you to do that."

"I've been trying to contact him to clear this all up, but he's not taking any calls."

"Don't worry about that. I'll get through to him."

"Commander, don't do anything you'll regret."

"Oh, trust me, I won't regret tearing Jean-Luc a new one..."

I stomp out of the office, leaving Kira sitting there, a expression of anger and bemusement on her face. I doubt the anger is directed at me. The bemusement on the other hand...

I step into my quarters, my temper at a full boiling rage now. "Computer!" "Connect me to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, Starfleet Command, Earth. Priority O...Two." I shout. If only I could use a priority one code.

I grab a cup of coffee from the replicator. Caffeine is the last thing I need right now, but I could use a good cup. A few minutes later, the computer finally speaks up. "Unable to establish connection. Admiral Picard is not currently accepting incoming transmissions."

"Sonova- Fine. Connect me with his aide." I wait another couple of minutes, finishing my cup, before the aide appears. And she pretty much says the same thing the computer did. I try to throw my name around, by Commander doesn't carry a lot of weight with the aides of Admirals. Which means I need to get hold of another Admiral...

"Elias, you old bag of bones."

"Kyle, you're one to talk. I've only got ten years on you."

"Ten looong years," he teases. "So, is this just a friendly call?" Kyle Spense is one of the few Admirals from the old days I can joke around with. And he's just the man I need.

"I need to call in a favor, but nothing major!" I quickly say when I see the expression on his face.

"Right. And the favor would be...?"

"In your capacity as Head of Operations, I need you to place a call to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, and tell him it's about the Enterprise....Then give me the line."

"Ah, the old bait and switch." Spense starts typing commands onto his desk. "Ignoring your calls, is he? Well, since I shouldn't be doing this, we'll call us even."

"Even? Are you forgetting Torgus II? Or how about the Orion homeworld. And what was the name of that woman on Risa...?"

Spense tries to ignore me, but he turns a shade more red. "Fine, I still owe you a couple. Make it quick."

The screen shifts. "This is Admiral Picard."

"Admiral, this is Commander Elias Vaughn."

"Vaughn?! How did you-"

"What gives you the right to reassign me on a whim."

Picard exhales. "It wasn't a 'whim', Commander. The Enterprise will need you as first officer-"

"DS9 needs me as first officer!"

"Deep Space Nine has an excellent command staff-"

"I know, because I'm part of it. Let me make this simple, Admiral. There's no way in hell I'm transferring to the Enterprise, and nothing you say is going to change that."

Now

"Commander?"

I look up from my padd at the Ensign piloting the shuttle from the Defiant. "Yes?"

"We're almost to the airlock."

"Belay that. Take us once around."

"Sir?"

"If I'm going to serve on her, I want to see what she looks like. Take the shuttle around."

"...um...aye, sir."

The pilot does as I order, bringing the shuttle away from the ship, and turning us around so we can see her head on. I lean forward on the controls as I look out the window.

"My god...she's amazing."

"Grandpa, tell me about the Tribbles again!"

"Come on now, Carter. I've told you that a thousand times. If I have to tell you a story, I would prefer the one with-"

"It's my favorite."

"Alright, then...Tribbles. See, the trouble with Tribbles is how fast they reproduce. You blink, and two become four and then four become eight! Those darn Tribbles, they reproduced at will. And, boy let me tell you, did they have a lot of will!"

Four Years Ago

"Doctor Leonard McCoy, better known as Bones to friends and family, was a man who spent the majority of his life on the forefront of exploration. He helped save the Federation and countless lives time and time again. Above all else, Bones cared about life and the preservation of life. His compassion and desire to help was unrivaled. We now gather here to lay him to rest. I will be the first to say that, even though we had our differences in the beginning, it was always a joy and pleasure to serve with Dr. McCoy. He was one of my best friends. Rest easy, old friend."

Now

"Dr. McCoy....Dr. McCoy?"

I look up, the ensign snaps me out of my trance.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes....just lost in the past."

The young officer and I look on in astonishment at the star cruiser.

"It's beautiful isn't it?"

"It's just a hunk of metal, Ensign. You want to show me a marvel, show me the Gorn digestive system. It's a wonder they're able to digest food at all."

I walk away from the officer and scan the new ship over.

McCoy and Enterprise. The two almost go hand in hand. I have a lot to live up to. It's intimdating, to say the least. Personally, I look forward to the challenge.

There she was. My new ship. MY ship. I still cain't believe it. Uncle Chakotay said they wanted me for the Ops position. He said it was quite an honor. Not many Ensign's are assigned to the Bridge Crew. Much less the flagship of the Federation. Technically it's 1 in 4,612.

The officer stood next to the docking bay looking bored as ever, cross checking all civilians and crew coming aboard the fancy new Enterprise. Bellatrix comes forward.

"All right, Cheif Tactical Officer Bellatrix, Romulan (with a hint of surprise). Welcome abroad ma'am. What do you think of the ship?"

Staring a the massive Century Class vessel she exclaims, "Never have I seen a ship which claims to be a humble exploration vessel be so hideously over powered with armaments. Bring's a tear of joy to my eyes"

The officer raises his eyebrow, tries not to think too much about her tone of voice and continues, "I beleive all is in order. You will transported immediately. Energize"

"They need you, Elias."

"...That's your argument?"

"What did you expect?"

"Basically? A break down of every detailed reason you chose to uproot my life in an attempt to convince me it's the right thing to do."

"Would that have worked?"

"No, I was prepared for that."

"It's good to see I can still surprise you. The simple fact is, they need you. You're the most experienced commander in the Fleet."

"There are plenty of excellent commanders, and candidates, out there. If I remember, Riker was brand new to the job and served you quite well."

"The difference was that I wasn't new to the job. An experienced captain can mentor a young first officer. But a new captain needs a first officer he can rely upon. Someone to support his decisions, but not be afraid to reign him back when he pushes too hard and far."

"Then why select Rourke in the first place?"

"Because Captain Riker said he'd be a fine choice. And I needed to put together a crew that could handle the Enterprise's mission."

"And what about my mission? I'm scheduled to depart for the Gamma Quadrant in three days."

"I believe General Nerys was going to promote Commander Dax to your former position."

"My former position." I grunt. "Well, Ezri wasn't happy about Julian being gone for three months. Now she'll get to be in charge of her husband." Picard smirks and takes a sip from a teacup. "You know I could get out of this with two or three calls."

"I'm aware of your standing within the Admiralty. By all rights, I should be calling you sir. Elias, no offense, but everyone on DS9 has more experience with the Gamma Quadrant and the Founders than you do. But no one, and I mean no one in the Fleet, knows more about the Alpha Quadrant. You know all the ins and outs. The names of the big players, so to speak. You have all the contacts. Rourke is going to need your help to get through these times."

"...how long do I have to think about it."

"You ship out tomorrow.

I roll my eyes. "No promises. I've got the goods on twenty admirals to get me out of this."

Jean-Luc smiles. "No promises. Picard out."

I lean back in my chair and just sit in silence for a few minutes. "Computer, display all information and schematics for USS Enterprise, NCC 1701-F, ." A list of text and images scroll across the screen. This is just the public information. Nothing special. "Show all classified information, authorization: Vaughn, Omega-five-Gamma-Echo." Now some more interesting technical specs start scrolling. But I'm still not at the good stuff yet.

So I type in one of my personal clearance codes. The type of code that doesn't officially exist. And I use it to bring up all the beyond classified data. Everything that only the designers and builders know about. Specifications even the captains don't get to see.

"...good lord." I walk over to the replicator. "Bourbon, neat." I read on during the familiar buzzing of replication, then reach down, and empty the glass in one shot.

Sisko once said he designed the Defiant to fight the Borg. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Picard designed the Enterprise to fight the Defiant.

"And he's putting her in the hands of a rookie...?"

Now

The airlock opens, and I'm greeted with the standard whistle by the yeoman sent to greet me.

"Commander Vaugn," he says, snapping to attention.

"Permission to come aboard."

"Permission granted, sir."

"At ease, yeoman."

"Sir." He stands at ease. "Commander, the Captain wished to see you as soon as you boarded."

"Of course."

"Shall I take your bag, sir?"

I instinctively grip the strap of my satchel tighter. "No need, yeoman. I always carry this with me."

"Then I'll escort you to the captain, now."

"That's alright. I've already memorized the layout. I'll manage. Dismissed." The yeoman looks at me oddly for a second, then snaps to attention with a nod and walks off. "Computer, location of Captain Rourke."

"Captain Rourke is in his ready-room."

"Ok then." I head down the corridor to the turbolift and step inside. "Bridge." I wait a several seconds as the lift changes direction a couple of times. Then the doors open.

I can only stand there in awe as crewmen busily rush around, finishing up all those little things that need to be done before a maiden voyage. I hear a half dozen voices over speakers talking to a half-dozen people on the bridge. One of the crew members notices me and is about to say something, but I wave them off. They have more important things to worry about then announcing me.

I walk down the bridge to the ready room doors, take a small breathe, and then step forward, letting the computer rely my presence...

The Question
11-17-2009, 12:22 AM
"That is one beautiful ship."

The large mass of operations division crewman, somewhere around 100, stood in rows or ten off to the side of the docking arm. Two, a Vulcan and an Andorian, walked up and down the rows. The Andorian was busy counting heads, while the Vulcan absent mindedly stared off at the ship that awaited them.

"Yes yes she's pretty as a picture," said the Andorian. "Where the HELL is Francis?"

"You seem so enthused, Sarge."

"We're about to embark on the flagship of the fleet and the boy's off screwing some hooker," muttered the Andorian. He turned to his Vulcan comrade.

"What were you saying?"

"I was talking about the work of art that is the ship we're about to go on. Not that you would care, you old ground pounder."

"I've never been much of a sailor, but I admit, she's a looker. But even if it wasn't my job to keep you knuckleheads in line I'd still be the one stuck doing it by default. No time for sightseeing."

A young crewman cam running up to the group, adjusting his uniform and trying to catch his breath. He stopped in front of the Andorian and saluted.

"Crewman Alfred Francis, reporting for duty sir!"

"What the hell, Francis?"

"I'm sorry, Chief. I was saying my goodbyes to my family and..."

"No you weren't. You were screwing a hooker."

"... well, I...."

"Just get in line."

Francis, quite embarrassed, shuffled into line with the others. The Andorian moved to the front of the crowd.

"Alright, listen up!" he said. "We're going to go through all the formal introductions and protocol **** with the senior staff when we get on board, but I want to say my piece first. It is an absolute honor to serve aboard The Enterprise. Admiral Picard realized that we're a strong and capable group and needed to be assigned to this ship together. He knows you've got the stuff, and so do I. I've seen it time and time and again over the years, going back to the war with some of you. So please: do not **** this up. I know the temptation is there, but it will make me look bad. And if I have to explain myself to some young punk of an officer who outside of the service I would be warning to stay the hell away from my daughter, I will be very angry and take it out on all of you. And on that note, when we meet our new head of security, please, do not make me look like an idiot. You all know I am very good at thinking of new and creative ways to hurt people. Now let's move out and get acquainted with the new boat, 'cause it's gonna be our home for a while."

The mass of crewman made their way to the airlock. They filled through, one by one, names checked off the crew manifest as they boarded the ship. The Andorian took a moment to look around the new ship, taking a deep breath.

"Home sweet home."

Bellatrix came off the transporter pad to be greeted by the ensign at the controls. A few more, security staff obviously were waiting to take her luggage and perhaps show her around. "At ease crew. Take my luggage to my quarters. Take me to the captain."

An ensign smiled politely and escorted Bella to Turbolift 3 and proceeded to the bridge. None of the senior staff were to be found.

She spotted a young human male ensign and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Ensign! Where is the captain? I must speak with him. I am the new Cheif of Security and this ship's Tactical Officer"

The ensign was taken aback. The cold voice, the focussed stare, she was staring into his soul. "Uh... Welcome aboard... the captain should be in his ready room. " He said, shaking all the while. He had heard stories

"What's the matter? You seem pale. According Starfleet regulations you should report to Dr. McCoy, our chief medical officer if you are feeling ill."

The ensign wiped some sweat from his brow and tried to seem more professional, "It's allright ma'am. It's just that I have never served under a Romulan before... I mean... there's nothing worng with it... I..."
She raised her hand to stop him mid speech.

"It's all right ensign. Your new. I was once too. By the way, what's your name?"
"Ensign Daniel Schumaker, ma'am" he repied with all the professionalim he could muster.

"I'll keep an eye on you Daniel. Now if you'll excuse me..."
She walked away. Stoic as ever. Daniel wondered wether he had somehow offended her and wether he should prepare to be booted off. He hoped his first encounter with the rest would be better.

Going towards the ready room, she saw a beast of a human going in the same direction. She recignized him. Elis Vaughn. A legend in starfleet. He was one of the few humans considered to be truly dangerous by Romluan Intelligence. The fact that he was here meant there was more to the Enterprise-F than she thought.

It then hit her, this ship was incredibly powerful, armed with cloaking technology and the experimental Multi-Vector Assault Mode. The only reason she even knew what the latter was because some years ago, a few Romulan Commandoes had commandeered an experimental starfleet tactical vessel, the Prometheus. Surely, Vaughn had something to do with this.

"The Human-Romulan Allaince was built on trust. I hope the Captain keeps his end of the deal."

"Welcome aboard," the gray haired man says to the small group. Including him and myself, there are three doctors and six nurses.

The majority are human. But one of the doctors is a Deltan, and we have two nurses, one Orion and one Vulcan.

"We should be launching in the next hour or so. My name is Doctor Peters, and I will be the Chief Medical Officer for Enterprise. Before my commission to this ship I was an instructor at Starfleet Medical. I want you to know that I expect hard workers, and

I know Doctor Peters well. He was my Xenobiology professor just a few years prior. Truth be told, I never liked the man. He has all the doctor attitude with none of the skill. Just based on my two years in his class I know more about extraterrestrial species than he does. And I also believe that the man has a touch of a drinking problem. Regardless of that, he's now my commanding officer.

"We have three doctors and six nurses. Given that this ship has close a thousand crew members and civilians, there will be one doctor and two nurses on call at all times. Three eight hour shifts. I've picked them at random. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift will be myself, Nurse Caldwell, and Nurse Henshaw. From 4 p.m. to midnight will be Doctor Ire, Nurses Rucker and Tenan. And working midnight until 8 a.m. will be Doctor McCoy along with Nurses Johnson and Dera."

Great, graveyard shift.

"Since this in launch day, feel free to explore the ship and mingle with the crew. Tomorrow we'll begin."

Doctor Peters walks away, leaving the sick bay and the rest of us behind. The nurses and doctors start to scatter.

I prepare to leave when a cute brunette stops me and flashes a smile.

"Doctor McCoy. I'm Nurse Johnson," she says with a southern drawl.

"I really look forward to working under you."

"I don't like women working under me, Nurse Johnson. I prefer they work alongside me."

"What about working underneath women?"

The Orion nurse holds out her hand.

"I'm Nurse Dera."

We shake hands quickly.

"Tell me, Doctor. Are you related to the former Admrial McCoy?"

"He was my grandfather."

"Really? When I attended Starfleet Medical, I did my thesis on Admiral McCoy and his medical work aboard the original Enterprise."

"That's fascinating. Maybe you can tell us some of your grandfather's stories? I have a feeling we'll have a lot of free time on working nights."

I look between Johnson and Dera.

Well, the graveyard shift suddenly looks better.

The doors swish open and in walks the imposing figure of Elias Vaughn. Johnathan had read about the man, as much as he was able considering all the missing years of information in his file from his days in Starfleet Intelligence.

"Commander Vaughn", Rourke stood up and greeted the man as he entered the ready room, the doors closing behind him.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person", the Captain said as he moved around from his desk to stand before his First Officer.

"Captain Rourke." I shake his hand. "Admiral Picard's spoken highly of you." A single bell rings out and I glance at the grandfather clock, striking the half hour. The sight of the antique makes me grin and I nod towards it. "Nice touch."

"Thank you, Commander. It's been in my family for a long time. Used to be in my grandfather's office at Starfleet HQ, but, after his death, it was left to me. I guess he figured, since I'm a big history buff, I'd take better care of it then my father."

"So, I take it you've read the specs on the ship and her crew? My father always said you were the most thorough bastard in all of Starfleet", Rourke smirks.

She saw Vaughn go into the ready room and followed suit

Rourke and Vaughn's attention turns to the door as the Chief of Security strides into the ready room.

"Commander Bellatrix", Rourke states.
"Usually one 'knocks' before simply barging in. Next time, make sure you do so, Commander."

"Now...welcome aboard. I'd like to introduce you to Elias Vaughn, the First Officer of the Enterprise. Commander Vaughn, this is Commander Bellatrix, our Chief of Security and Tactical Officer."

"I sincerely apologize for the sudden intrusion however there have been certain... developments ... that have interested me.

(Glancing at Vaughn) I have heard of Mr. Vaughn, one of Starfleet's finest. That is what troubles me. I thought that this was a mere exploration vessel but there seems to be more here. This ship is more like a prototype War Vessel, much like the once classified Prometheus.

The presence of Mr. Vaughn whose entire career has been involved with Starfleet Intelligence and Covert Ops also suggests certain things I would rather not mention.

(Talking directly to Vaughn) I do not intend to insult you Commander, it's just that your reputation precedes you. If I seem suspicious it is because I expect to be told everything about the ship on which I serve as Senior Officer.

I hope nothing is being kept from me. I assure you my loyalties as of now are with Starfleet. The last thing I want to do is shame the Empire by sparking off a conflict."

"You have nothing to worry about, Commander", Rourke replied.
"I assure you that you know as much as I, or the rest of the senior staff, does."

"With tensions at a high throughout the Quadrants, Starfleet decided it was best to outfit all new vessels with top of the line armaments. It's a dangerous galaxy out there, after all, and one can't be too careful."

The comm channel buzzed, and Rourke moved to his desk, pressing the button and opening the line of communication.

"Go ahead."

"Sir, I just wanted to inform you that all is in order. All crew is aboard and we are ready to depart."

"Excellent news, Mr. Cobb. Prepare to take us out."

The Captain cut the comm link and walked towards the door leading to the bridge.

"You coming", Rourke asked to his two Commanders with a smirk before turning and walking out onto the bridge.

She turns to me and I wait for the door to close behind her. When it does- "You were completely out of line, Commander!" I say with the right amount anger. "I don't know how they do things in the Romulan military, but in Starfleet, if you have a problem you go to the first officer, namely me. And we discuss it in private. Only then do you even consider bothering the Captain with your issues. He's got enough on his mind, much less having to deal with your concerns about this ship's mission. If you can't do things the Starfleet way, I'll be more than happy to endorse your transfer off this vessel. Do I make myself clear?"

Rourke was surpirsingly patient and Vaughn gave her the exact reaction she expected.

She replies unflinchingly,
"You are right Commander, I was out of line, however sometimes complications can arise which must be adressed immidiately. As a Senior Officer, I have as much as a right as you to speak to the captain directly. I could have talked to him in private but you yourself were one of my concers. I wanted you to hear my concerns as well.

Thankfully, it does not seem Starfleet has been trying to pull the wool over my eyes. We are still docked and I am sure some leeway can be given to the crew in terms of etiquette especillay the Senior Officer's.

I know you like to run a tight ship and I assure you, no one is as skilled in enforcing strict disipline as I am.

Thank you for your time and I hope our future encounters will be smoother."

She turns and leaves. Feeling slightly ashamed of herslef for being so reckless and that too on the first day but she would not dare show weakness, especially to someone like Vaughn.

"And Mr. Prescot, I'll need a blue viewer circa 2261 installed into Science Station II. I'll need that by 1200 hours. Please reroute all functions for that station directly into the Ops station. I expect these two positions to work as if I can utilize both of them at the same time. And as far as you're concerned I can. Understood?"

"Yes sir!"

"Dismissed."

The gold shirted crewman turns to go.

"Oh and Chief... Thank you again."

"My pleasure ma'---uh sir."

Puk inspects both stations. Science Station II was just a few steps away from Ops. Both were on the port side of the bridge. At one point Puk forgets herself and stretches her arm five meters to access Ops from her other station. A roaming yeomen's eyes widen at the feat.

"Ooooh yeah. Sorry bout that sug."

Puk turns her attention to the user interface for the main sensor array.

Please listen to this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9gXIlqqEhY&feature=related) while reading. Also, occasionally lens flaring yourself with a flash light is also recommended.

Bellatrix walks into the bridge only to be blinded by a sudden burst of light. The sun was coming up and the view screen was staring right at it. One ensign screams, "Oh god!! Polarize the view screen! We are very sorry."

It was Daniel again.

An electrical discharge occurs on the screen effectively reducing the light intensity. You'd think that it would be automatic by now, however in low light conditions polarizing the screen makes it too dark to see.

She saw Rourke nearby, rubbing his eyes. Proceeding to her console she makes an announcement, specifically to the security team,
"This is Chief Tactical Officer Bellatrix speaking. We will we leaving dock in a few moments and before that I would like a meeting with the security staff. The Chief Petty Officer and his team will meet me in the security station. That is all."

The kid brightens up instantly. "Yes, sir. I mean, no sir! I mean..."

"Just get to your station, Ensign."

"Yes, sir. Thank you sir," he says with relief, rushing to the back of the bridge.

"Just out of the Academy?" I quietly ask Rourke.

"Doctor McCoy," Doctor Peters says as he walks up to me. Stumbling appears to be a better description. I'd say he's currently two and a half sheets into the wind.

"I was just down in the galley..cele-...ahem, celebrating the departure of the new ship."

And I guess last night you were celebrating the fact that the sun went down? And the night before, and the night before that.

"It's a celebration worthy event."

"Indeed it is. Take a walk with me, I have something I want to discuss."

I follow Peters' swevering footsteps down the hallways, doing my best to make sure he doesn't run into the wall.

"You may not know this, but I remember you from my Starfleet Med. class and I remember your reputation. You're a bit of a know-it-all, but that's to be expected with younger doctors."

I guess a young know-it-all is worse than an old one?

"So let me say this right now: This is my medical staff and I am your superior."

He shoves me against the wall and I catch the full stench of booze. It makes my eyes water.

"I don't care what ship we're on who your granddaddy was, you answer to me."

Even though I'm a better doctor, smarter than you, and don't drink booze like a fish drinks water?

"I understand, sir."

"Good. I'm reporting to the bridge. The captain wants the Chief Medical Officer to report to the bridge for a briefing. As second in command, you'll go back to the sick bay and cover my shift."

Sure thing, Dr. Jack Daniels.

"Yes, sir."

Peters smiles and weaves away. I watch as he climbs into the turbolift and disappears behind the doors.

I just shake my head and turn back towards the sick bay.

The security station, while quite large, was not designed for the entire security force to be present at one time. Just over one hundred crewmen bunched together, bumping elbows and generally wanting to either get to work or go back to their quarters.

Senor Chief Petty Officer Tarkon Amoni, the highest ranking man in the room, spoke to his subordinates.

"Everyone try and clear a path. We don't want to make out new CO feel unwelcome."

As the Ensign dashes off to his position, I take my seat and activate my console. "All department heads, this is the First Officer. Report readiness for launch."

I watch as department after department turns green with signals of readiness. I hear the turbolift doors open and see Doctor Peters step onto the bridge. "Medical ready for departure," he reports, his voice sounding somewhat unsteady. I give him a long glance and he seems...off. And I know it's not my imagination. I can tell when someone isn't themselves, even if I hadn't met them before. If I didn't know better, I'd think he had been drinking.

"Medical reporting ready, Captain," I confirm. "Waiting only on Security and Engineering, sir."

"Excellent", Rourke says as he glances the Doctor's way. There was something strange about the man. Like he was drunk, or something. But no senior officer could be that stupid, could they?
Rourke shook his head and turned back to dealing with the immediate situation: getting the Enterprise ready for her maiden voyage.

The turbolift sped downwards with a distinct buzz. Inside Chief Bellatrix was patiently waiting to meet her new 'troops' as it were. This would be her first time leading humans and vice-versa for them. She didn't necessarily think less of humans considering at one point their entire planet was of empires and conquerors. Funny thing about that, it is said that the Empire of Rome was founded by two brothers Romulus and Remus, bizarre coincidence. Perhaps Romulans and Humans were always meant to be.

However, WW-III and their FIRST CONTACT with the Vulcans had removed their teeth and claws. Save for few like Commander William Riker and her own C.O. Elias Vaughn

Except for the fact that her second-in-command was Andorian of all things.
Andorians were... special....

Her thoughts are interrupted as the turbolift comes to a halt and she sees the Security Station at the end of the hallway. She proceeds and is shocked to see an assembly of various races inside, Human, Bajoran, few Andorians excluding the one in front of them. Mental note, get a bigger Station.

The Andorian in front of of the group stood with gracious professionalism, there was a certain air about him. Definitely a military man, although he was probably a marine considering he looked uncomfortable being on a starship as were some of 'his' men.

She steps forward and introduces herself to the standing audience, "My name is Bellatrix your new commanding officer. I am sure most of you must be shocked to see that I am a Romulan seeing as how the Federation and the Star Empire have not really seen eye to eye. However, times are changing and with we too need to change. I assure you that I am a hard taskmaster but not an unfair one, bravery and courage is to be rewarded while insubordination will get you a one way trip out of the ship. Do I make myself clear?

A tiny squeak is heard from the group of ensigns. Her usual cold, calculating voice did quite a number on them. While the Chief Petty Officer had hearts in his eyes.
"Good. You are all dismissed until further notice.

The audience begins to slowly move out."Now, Officer Tarkon. May we speak in private?"

Tarkon stood quietly until the rest of the staff left the room. Chief Petty Officer T'Sol, a Vulcan he had served with since their special forces days in the war, shot him a look that either indicated "Watch out, Romulan military officers are notoriously authoritarian and she may very well do her best to beat you down and shatter every last vestige of your will until you are her docile puppet" or "She's cute, and I think she likes you." Or perhaps both. Conveying multiple meanings with simple expressions is a very common Vulcan skill.

"Yes, Ma'am?" he said as the last crewman filed out.

The ship was beautiful. Light glinted off its hull as I studied it from the observation deck of the station. I hear somebody running up behind me and I turn around to face a young ensign.

"Sorry for bothering you, Sir, but all crew need to be onboard now," he says, chest pumped up.

"I'll be right there," I tell him, as I take one last glance before following after him.

****

The engineers of the USS Enterprise hurryaround doing final checks on the machinery, while I give my bags to the nearest ensign and walk over to the warp core.

"Seems fine to me, where's the Assistant Chief Engineer?" I call out to the large group and one of them steps out from the pack.

"Lieutenant Faraway," a young woman replies to me.

"Good to see you, Faraway. We all clear to go?"

"Yes Sir, we're just finishing off some checks on the weapons and we're set."

"Good, I'll check in with the Bridge, keep up the good work."

I nod to Faraway and turn off, heading out of the Engine Room.

****

The turbolift slides open and I step out onto the bridge of the ship, admiring it's beauty. I notice somebody stumbling in the direction of the turbolift and step aside to let him past, noticing the uniform of a doctor.

"Doctor," I nod, resisting the urge to s****** at the drunk man.

I turn to the First Officer, remembering the name from the files. Probably the most experienced man on the crew, and a legend with it. Commander Elias Vaughn.

"Sir, engineering is ready for departure."

"Excellent", Rourke eagerly smiled.
"Mr. Cobb...take us out, quarter impulse."

"Aye, aye, Captain."

Helmsman Cobb cracked his knuckles and dived into the control. The Texan, who had been piloting all manner of ships since he learned to walk, activated the impulse thrusters and gracefully guided the Enterprise out of the stardock.

Rourke could help but grin as the beautiful vessel pulled away from McKinley Station, the tiny shuttlecraft on the view screen scurrying out of the vessel's way.

"Increase to full impulse and take us out of Earth orbit."

"Sure thing, sir."

The Enterprise sailed silently through space, and quickly passed the moon, which was shining brightly in the sunlight. All the cities, looking like perfect little miniature models, was a magnificent sight to see.

But, now that the ship was out, there was another matter to attend to.

"Doctor Peters, join me in my ready room", Rourke spoke as he stood up from his captain's chair.

"Yes, sir", the Doctor said, doing his best to sound and look sober.

"Commander", Rourke looked to Vaughn, "You have the bridge. Take us out of the system, if you please."

The Captain entered his ready room, the doctor following right behind him. As the door closed behind them, Rourke made his way around his desk, but didn't sit down.

"How much have you had", Rourke asked Peters.

"Sir? I don't know what you're-"

"Doctor", Rourke cut the man off.
"If there's one thing I hate more than a man drinking on the job, it's being lied to. How. Much. Have. You. Had?"

Peters swallowed hard, trying to get rid of the lump currently stuck in his throat.
"Only...a few glasses of Andorian ale."

"Unacceptable", Rourke said, a hint of anger in his voice.
"Not only are you being grossly irresponsible, not to mention breaking Starfleet regulations, but you being inebriated puts the lives of any of the crew at risk should they seek medical attention."

"I'm...I'm sorry, sir", Peters stammered a reply.

"You damn right you are", Rourke said, his anger rising a bit, "if I ever find out that you've been drinking on the job again, I'll have you booted off this ship and out of Starfleet. Do I may myself clear?"

"Crystal, sir", Peters frowned and looked down to the floor in embarrassment.

"Good. You are to return to your quarters and remain there. You're on a forty-eight hour suspension, effective immediately."

"Sir?"

"You heard me, Doctor", Rourke glared at the man.
"Now, get out of my sight."

Peters huffed in disappointment before turning and storming angrily out of the Captain's ready room.

"Incoming message from Starfleet, sir", came an ensign's voice over the intercom.
"It's Admiral Picard."

Rourke sighed and sat down in the chair.
"Put it through."

"Aye, sir."

"Admiral", Rourke smiled as Picard's face appeared on the tiny view screen situated on his desk.
"What can I do for you?"

"Aye, Captain. Helm, make your course zero-five-five mark twelve," I say as I take the center seat. "Warp factor 3."

"Warp 3, Commander. All ready to go."

I raise an eyebrow and vaguely wonder about Picard's sense of humor. "Execute."

An almost imperceptible, yet very familiar feeling vibrates through the ship as we relativistically stretch forward and snap past light speed. I'd still rather be half a galaxy away on the Defiant, but I can't deny how good it feels to be out among the stars again.

"So, tell me something about yourself, a big strong strapping young man like you. Where are you from?"

I smile meekly at Nurse Dera, these green skinned women really know how to put on the charm.

"Well, I was born on Pluto. We were two when we moved back to Earth-"

"Make way!"

Dera and I turn to see a Klingon officer carrying an unconscious pregnant human woman into the bay.

"What's going on here?"

"My wife, she's going into labor."

To be honest, I'm shocked. Chances of a Human-Kligon conception are impossibly high.

"How far along is she?"

"Almost twenty-five weeks."

I check it off in my head. The usual pregnancy time for a Klingon is thirty weeks, even less for Klingon hybrids.

"Nurse Dera, prep the delivery room. Nurse Johnson, I want this lady scanned and ready for delivery."

Klingon births are always tricky. The babies thrash and fight, that usual Klingon attitude. 25% of all births result in the death of the mother. It's even higher with non-Klingon mothers.

"Doctor," the officer says as he places his wife on the table.

"If something happens to her....I am holding you personally responsible."

The Klingon officer keeps his deadly eyes focused on me as I coughed.

"Don't...uhh, don't worry, sir."

I walk away and hit the view screen, contacting the bridge.

"This is Vaughn, Doctor Peters is with-" The ready-room doors open and Peters marches out. "Doctor, it's Mc-"

"Off duty," Peters said, obviously disgruntled. I suppose I was right.

"McCoy...you're on your own. Call in the other doctor if you need to."

I sit back in the seat and exhale. "What is it about ships named Enterprise?"

I'm about to reply to the commander when Nurse Johnson calls from the delivery room.

"Doctor, she's fully dialated! Pulse is fading, she could be going into cardiac arrest!"

I nod to Vaugh and sign off.

I rush into the room and check her pelvic regions. A squirming mass of flesh is poking its way out.

"Nurse Dera, prep the panels. If she start sto crash, I want to shock her back."

"Wouldn't that kill the baby?"

"It's half-Klingon. This little shock will be the easiest pain it'll have to endure."

The woman's husband stands next to her, holding her hand with worried eyes.

"Okay now. Start breathing and....PUSH! PUSH! PUSH!"

The woman screams out as the baby starts to slip out of her. The lump of flesh and mucus is screaming and trashing.

"Pulse is 50 and dropping....24....she's going to crash."

I spring up and grab the panels, placing them on the woman's chest.

"Here we go....one, two, three, CLEAR!"

BBZZZZT!!!

The electricty courses through her body and she wiggles from the shock.

"Still nothing."

"one, two, three, CLEAR!"

BBZZZZT!!!

I look down as the woman's body dances from the jolt. The heart is still not beating, worst of all I don't hear the baby crying.

"Alright. We're going to have to remove the baby out manually. Nurse Johnson, keep on with the paddles."

I slap on a pair of rubber gloves and reach down for the baby that is half-way out of the womb.

This is one hell of a first day.

35 minutes into my assignment on the Enterprise. Let's review, shall we?

I've been hit on by two very attractive nurses who will be spending many lonely nights with me.
My commanding officer threatened me while he was half drunk.
Said commanding officer was suspended from duty for, what I assume, is drinking on the job.
The old First Officer, the legendary Elias Vaughn, gave me a combination of the "stink eye" and the "checking me out" eye.
A pregnant human is dying on my table in the middle of giving birth to her half-Klingon child.
Her Klingon husband then threatened to kill me if anything happened to his wife or unborn child.
Does that cover it? I think so.

BBZZZZT!!!

The pregnant woman bucks and kicks as Nurse Johnson hits her with another jolt of electricity.

"She's back!"

I hear the woman's deep breaths as I sit between her legs. Half of the baby's head is now sticking out. The Klingon ridge is prominent on its forehead.

"Alright, now. PUSH!"

The woman screams and I reach in just in time to pluck the newborn out of harm's way.

The alien baby thrahses and screams as I try to hold on to it. Nurse Dera swoops in and wraps it up in a towel.

"Congratulations....it's a girl."

Both parents are beaming proudly as Dera hands the baby over to the woman.

I'm hot, sweaty, and covered in bodily fluids and afterbirth. The smile on my face couldn't be any more wider.

I'm now 36 minutes into my commission on the Enterprise.

This is going to be one hell of a ride.

Regardless, I wanted to talk to you because I wanted your opinion. You have lead these men before, hence I wanted to know what you think, of your men, of me. I am quite strict in enforcing discipline wanted to know if you have any advice. You may speak freely."

"Oh and before I forget (slaps comm badge). Captain Rourke? Security team reports ready.

"Only advice I could offer is that you give them due respect. A few of them are rough around the edges, but they're all professionals. Don't work them harder than they need to be and trust their experience, don't ask them to do anything you wouldn't be willing to do yourself, and you'll get plenty of respect in return. Basically, don't give them any reason to hate you. Give them every reason to fear you, absolutely, but not to hate you. That ain't practical. As for the matter of what I think of you... well, I don't know you. You're an officer. I was afraid you might be a pompous ass. You still might be, but you seem like you know what you're doing."

I force myself not to grin as I mentally review her service record. "Relax, Ensign. Born on Earth, eh...?" I say with a nod. Taking a step closer to her, I lower my voice a notch. "Odo's a good man. I trust him, and he trusts you. That's good enough for me."

I bring my voice back to it's normal level. "A good idea, Ensign. Maiden voyages are all about testing our systems. This sounds like a good, and useful, test," even though I have no idea what you just said. "Carry on, Ensign Puk."

Bellatrix smiles at the response, Don't worry Officer. I'll keep your advice in mind. And I assure you, I may be a proud Romulan but I'm not pompous. Some of us have learned to respect others. Now if you will excuse me. I must report to the bridge.

She motions to Vaughn, "Commander, won't you introduce me to our new Science Officer?"

"Doctor Ire, what can I help you with?"

"Our senior medical officer is suspended for 48 hours. As the second most experienced officer, what do we do to fill in for Peters?"

"Hmm....I say we go to two twelve hour shifts. Doctor Peters' two nurses will be divided up. Would you prefer Nurse Henshaw or Caldwell?"

"It makes no difference to me."

"I'll take Henshaw and you can have Caldwell. Once Peters is back, we'll return to the three shifts. Sound good?"

"I have no problem with it."

"Doctor McCoy."

Ire and I turn and look at the ensign on the video screen.

"As the medical officer with the most experience, your presence is required in the conference room along with all the senior officers."

"On my way," I say as I turn to Ire and nod.

"What sort of outpost was Starbase 23? Was it just for scientific purposes, or for housing military personnel or equipment?"

Franklin Richards
12-04-2009, 10:17 PM
"Starbase 23, due to it's proximity to Romulan space was once the top strategic and intel base in the quadrant. Although it's tactical importance has fallen off due to the recent attitude toward the Empire, it was still one of the top outposts in the Federation."

:ST: :ST: :ST:

The Question
12-04-2009, 11:03 PM
"But what did it do? Since we started getting chummy with the Empire, I mean. There's no point in spying from just outside their border when there's been all kinds of operations waltzing across into Romulan space for months. Whatever went on there'd tell us why it was attacked. Was there anything of value or were they just using it as a trading post or some such?"

"Starbase 23 was destroyed. It was an outpost near the Federation-Romulan Border. And now all eyes fall upon me accusingly. Great way to start the day." she ponders.

After hearing the others she provides her own bit of speculation.

Despite appearances Captain, I doubt those responsible are of the Romulan Empire. The last thing they... we would want is to commit an act of war just when the alliance was formed.

Plus, destruction is not the Romluan way. We gather intelligence, our specialties are espionage and infiltration. The Klingons are the brutes who burn everything in there path.

Regardless, the first thing we must do is to scan the area for any traces of minute energy left behind by cloaking devices. Then a scan for warp trails.

Whoever destroyed Starbase 23 wanted to get rid of something. There must have been something on that station that was a great danger to them. Intel? Weapons? Star Charts?

I respectfully disagree. Unless Starbase 23 was more fragile than normal, I doubt a group of rebels could mount such an offensive.

These people are more than mere terrorists.

However, if any self respecting Romulan is responsible. Be assured I will personally do away with him/her.

The question is how and with what weapons.

Byrd Man
12-05-2009, 04:40 AM
Gut feelings. That's what I get.

Starbase 23 had to house something important or had some piece of serious intel within it to warrant such an attack. I'm not sure if Rourke knows what's in there, but I'll bet a hundred credits Vaughn at least has an idea what was inside the outpost.

The other gut feeling I get involves the Romulans. They may have not been behind the attack, but I don't trust them, and I believe the alliance was a huge mistake. Having a Romulan Chief of Security on Starfleet's flagship is an even biger blunder. It's beginning to look like the alliance with the Klingons may have not been a good idea, how much longer until we realize the same with the Romulans?

That's what I want to say.

"If it comes down to battle stations, Captain. Sick Bay is one doctor short for the next two days. We do have all our nurses and I do believe we can handle any type of casulties we may encounter if we have to fight the attackers. That's worse case scenario, sir. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."

Those are all just feelings I have, nothing more. Saying all this in a meeting of senior officers, with that same Romulan Chief of Security among them, is not a good idea. All I'll do is make things even worse for the new crew.

So, I keep all this inside me. If the need for me to say something comes up, I'll say it. For now I shut it up.

After all - I'm a doctor, not a trouble maker.

Johnny Blaze

"Yes, I agree that this definitely does not seem like a Romulan attack", Rourke states after hearing his crew's comments.
Even upon hearing the news of the Starbase's destruction, Rourke did not believe it could've been Romulan.
He had spent most of his Starfleet career in Romulan space, working with them, fighting with them, living with them. Thanks to his time spent there under Riker, Rourke was one of the leading minds in the Federation when it came to the Romulans and their ways.

"This is too...straight forward. Too thuggish to truly be the work of Romulans. But, whoever did this wanted us to think it was Romulans. Which is, unfortunately, what most of the High Command is leaning with right now. That this was the work of a rogue Romulan faction. I just don't see it though."

"In any case, when we arrive on location, we'll scan the area, see if we can find anything. I also would like to see what shape the Starbase is in, try and figure out how it was destroyed. Hopefully we can find some clues as to who's behind this."

"In the meantime, I'm putting the ship on yellow alert and engaging the cloak. Although it's unlikely somebody is there waiting for us, I'd rather not chance it. I also want communications to monitor all sub-space frequencies. If another attack occurs while we're in transit, I want to know about it immediately."

"We'll be heading there at warp 8.5", the Captain said with a nod towards Puk.
"That should give us sufficient time to come up with ideas to try and solve this mystery. Unless somebody has something they'd like to add, consider this briefing adjourned."

The Question
12-07-2009, 09:54 PM
"Pardon me, sir, but no one really answered my question: What did the starbase do? It was an information gathering post, but since we opened our boarders to The Romulans that couldn't have been something needed of them. What have they been doing since then? What was their day to day activity, what kind of cargo was getting shipped through there? Knowing that would help us narrow down the suspect list, is all."

Johnny Blaze
12-07-2009, 10:01 PM
"Nothing major, as far as I'm aware", the Captain replied.
"It's been used as a weigh station and trading outpost for materials and goods going into the Empire from Federation space. It's very possible that there could have been some covert operations taking place there. There's also the possibility that this attack could very well have been a person, or persons, looking for a specific item that was currently on the starbase."

"Commander", Rourke said as he turned to Vaughn, "I hear you're a man with many connections. Would it be possible for you to do some searching with Starfleet Intelligence? Find out if there were any secret operations going on at the base?"

"Until then, I recommend Ensign Puk start scouring through any data Starfleet may have already collected, and that Commander Bellatrix start getting her people ready for a fight. Romulan or not, if they have a warbird, then they probably have a cloaking device. I don't care for the idea of being caught in the open."

The Question
12-08-2009, 11:58 PM
"We should get our hands on any records the Romulans have about their ship deployment in the past few weeks... maybe what they do with decommissioned ships aswell. Wether the Romulan military was responsible or not, a Valore-Class Warbird doesn't just destroy an entire space station without leaving some kind of paper trail. If it was stolen or purchased by civilians after decommissioning, there will be a record of it, and it it was a ship in active duty that deviated from their course to do this, we might be able to find where the logs are inconsistent. It also might be worthwhile to make a list of whatever planets could be suitable for a ship of that size to land and restock supplies, or go into hiding. Even if they're not there anymore, we might find some evidence that they were to point us towards where they went."

wiegeabo
12-10-2009, 03:14 PM
"That's a lot of paperwork. It'll take hours to pour through it all. And that's even if the Romulans are willing to give us what we ask. I switch of the screen and lean back in my chair, rubbing my eyes. I've been in my quarters for the last two hours, trying to dig up anything on the starbase. But no where I've looked, and no one I've called, has given my any insights. Even the few friends in SI that were willing to pick up my calls couldn't help. Which either means Starbase 23 is exactly what it appeared to be, or it's something so classified that no one knows anything about it.

In essence, I've gotten nowhere.

I think about making one more call, but it's not smart to burn favors with the head of Starfleet Intelligence unless you really, really need to. Instead, I walk over to my replicator. I think about ordering a bourbon, but I've learned that frustration usually isn't the best reason to drink. Especially when still on duty.

Instead, "Tea, Earl Grey. Hot." The replicator hums with light for a moment. I pick up the cup and take a sip...then promptly spit it back into the cup.

"How does Jean-Luc drink this?" I put the cup back, and push the recycle button. Another hum, and it's gone. "Jovian coffee, spiced, black, decaffeinated. Hot."

This time a mug appears. I lift it, blow across the top, and sip. "Ahhh...that's more like it."

Still, the frustration remains. And I'm not doing any good just standing around banging my head against the wall, and the captain doesn't need me sitting around the bridge. I think about going for a workout and dismiss it. I think about the bourbon, and decide to get out of my quarters.

I vaguely walk around the ship, taking this new vessel in, and eventually find myself standing outside sickbay. I smile. I had been meaning to have meeting with all the department heads anyway...

The door slides open and a nurse instantly stands up from her station. "Commander. How can I help, sir."

I wave her off. "I'm just here to talk with the doctor. Is he in?"

"In his office, sir. Other side of the wall."

"Thank you, ensign." I step through the open doorway, and see the young man hard at work. I never could figure out much of the stuff Julian would have on his screens. I always thought it was because of his genetically superior intellect. Now, looking at the doctor's screens, I just must not have an eye for medicine.

"Doctor McCoy...?"

"Doctor McCoy...?"

I'm in the middle of my medical charts when the door slides open. I'm shocked when I see who comes through.

"Commander Vaughn!"

I smack my knees against my desk as I blot upright.

"What, ahh, what brings you around? Are you feeling well?"

I know Vaughn is the oldest human on this ship, and I'd really hate for him to die on my watch.

"I can give you a quick scan, if you wish."

"No need, Doctor. I feel fine. Frustrated that I haven't made any progress on Starbase 23, though. But that's not why I'm here. I always make it a point to talk with the senior staff on new assignments. And since Doctor Peters is indisposed for another day, that makes you our Chief Medical Officer."

"Well, I read up on what happened here today. That was a pretty difficult delivery you had earlier. Congratulations on pulling everyone through, by the way."

"But, what's concerning me the most...is Doctor Peters. He was supposed to be on duty, and I'm not sure I like to think what would have happened if he had been. I know you've only been around the man a short time, but in my experience, that's all doctor's usually get, so that's all they need. What's your opinion of the him?"

Byrd Man
12-19-2009, 11:54 PM
Doctor Peters is a drunken fool. His practices are outdated, and he's a petty tyrant who's jealousy outweighs his actual medical ability.

"Doctor Peters is...adjusting to his role as Chief Medical Officer. He's been at the academy for almost ten years teaching, it's not easy for a man to adjust to being reassigned back into service. As far as the drinking is concerned, he was celebrating the ship's departure earlier today and he, along with myself and Doctor Ire, were not aware of the pregnant woman until she was rolled into Sickbay. We should have surveyed the medical files better, which I am going through right now, and we should never be caught off guard again."

I keep my trap shut about Peters. I personally can't stand the man, but I won't be responsible for his dismissal...yet. As my CO, I have to protect him to an extent. If he slips with lives in the balance, I'll personally dismiss the sorry bastard myself.

"I see." I absently pick up something that was sitting on the table and twirl it in my fingers. "I'm certainly glad to hear you being diligent about the crew's files. But I also sense that you're protecting Peters."

"I can admire that. No one wants to be the whistle blower on their commanding officer. And if you really think that Peters can do the job, I'll respect that. But it's my job to worry about the smooth functioning of the ship so the Captain doesn't have to. So if there comes a time when he can't, I hope you'll come to me with it."

Vaughn nods his head. I bite my lip and shuffle some papers around.

"Umm, sir. I have a question for you."

He arches his eyebrow slightly. I'll take that as my cue to speak.

"I know you're well known in Starfleet, and you've had numerous assignments. Did you ever come aboard the USS California during my time on the ship, or perhaps Starfleet Academy while I was enrolled? I only ask this because....I feel like I've met you before, but I'm having trouble remembering where."

Starbase 23. Perfect. The Devron system was tore apart by the Anti-Time Event. The possibility for a tether between the two seems promising. Maybe even past and present viewings via the Clairvoyance Software. We'll see.

But till then I have 18 hours to mull over some cold sensor readings from Starfleet database.

"So, sir, how do you want to handle this?"

For dangerous away missions mostly. However, I feel this is not the time and I would need the Captain's permission. I enter the Engine Room again, the various technicians and engineers working in a more relaxed way now, some at terminals running scans, others checking the machinery up close, noting stuff down on electronic pads. Faraway notices me entering and walks over to me.

"Sir."

"Faraway. All okay?"

"All the recent scans have been logged, ready for you to check, and everything is in a good condition."

"Excellent, if you need me, I'll be in my office."

I nod to her as I head in the direction of my office, going in through the doorway and taking a seat at my desk. I look to the screen and go through the data, the information the Captain gave us going through my head. Different to being stuck on a station, that's for sure.

I turn the corner, and the constant thrum of power fills the engine room. While crew work at the various stations, the whole scene is dominated by the massive warp core at the center. They say it's the most powerful in the fleet. Even more powerful than the Defiant's.

"...it certainly is bigger," I say to myself.

"Sir?"

"Yes, Ensign?"

"Um...did you say something...?"

I smile. "Just thinking out loud."

"I see, sir. Can I help you with anything?"

"Hey Dad,

The Defiant's going to launch in about an hour. Everything's chaotic as we all get ready for launch. The Tellarite delegation's been complaining about nearly everything. You'd think we'd be used to it by now.

I just snuck away long enough to send you a quick letter. Let you know that we're all excited to get back to the Gamma Quadrant. And that I wish you were coming along. Even Commander Dax sort of wishes you were still in command. Although Dr. Bashier's pretty happy she's coming along instead of you, although he thinks he's hiding it well.

Anyway, I really need to go. I'll miss you, and I'll send you a letter whenever I get the chance. Love you, dad."

I lean back in my chair and smile and Prynn's face. So much like her mother. And I see a little of my mother around the eyes. Suddenly I feel homesick for DS9.

I check the chronometer. Ten hours. She sent the message Ten hours ago. Just before the Enterprise launched. I could have easily dashed off a quick response and it would have gotten to her before the Defiant launched. But no, I had to go see the Captain directly. He would have waited ten minutes for me to stow my gear.

Once again I put career ahead of family. Sure, this is minuscule compared to all the other times, and Prynn will understand completely. But it still bothers me.

I start my reply:

"Hi. Just got your letter. Yeah, I know, ten hours late. Not a surprise. Or maybe it is, only took me ten hours to get back to you.

This ship...it's impressive. The crew...well, just imagine how eccentric we thought the station's crew was when we joined up. Yep, it's almost that bad. We're already on our first mission, which of course I can't talk about. But it seems pretty important. I'm about to catch some sleep, I've been going nonstop since getting here. I hope you get this quickly, and you get back to me soon. I want to hear about all those adventures I'm missing out on. Love you."

I shut down the recorder, code the message, and send it off to DS9 for routing. If I'm lucky, she'll get it in a day. Which means she'll probably get it in about the week. I sigh and shut down the terminal, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.

I look at my bed and think longingly about my bed on the station. I sigh again.

"I hate a new mattress..."

My alarm goes off and wakes me up. And I wish it hadn't.

"I really hate new mattresses."

You'd think after nine decades of intelligence work, I'd be able to sleep anywhere. And I can. Doesn't mean I always enjoy it.

I glance at the chronometer. Shift starts in a little over an hour, and we'll be arriving at the Neutral Zone a couple of hours after that. Who knows what we'll find there, but the Captain wanted the senior staff on the bridge and ready for anything. And I don't blame him.

A quick shower and quick meal later, and I'm almost ready. "Jovian coffee, spiced, black, decaffeinated...make that double caffeinated. Hot." I have a feeling it's going to be a long day. And I never ignore my feelings.

***

The turbolift door opens to the bridge and I step out. Looks like I'm the last of the senior bridge crew to arrive. Never let it be said that I can't arrive fashionably late.

"Captain," I say as I walk to my station.

"Commander," Rourke replies, studying the padd he's holding. "We're about two hours out."

"Anything on sensors, sir?"

"Nothing yet, Commander." He glances over at Ensign Puk, who nods a confirmation.

"Maybe I should have slept in."

Rourke grins. "Now what kind of impression would that have made with your Captain?"

"That I'm so good at my job I only need five minutes to be on top of things."

His grin turns into a smile. "I may have to hold you to that."

For the next two hours, the crew goes about their business. But I can feel the tension in the ship rising as we get closer. Battle drills become a little more terse each time they are run. I've noticed bridge personnel triple running diagnostics on their systems. And I've been reading the same page of this report on the sector for the last twenty minutes. I still don't know what it says. I mentally chastise myself for losing focus and shut down the file, looking over the bridge instead.

Everyone's thinking the same thing. We're going into an unknown, potentially hostile situation. And while most of the crew are experienced (especially after the war), a good number aren't. And this ship is still completely untested.

But you couldn't tell that by looking at the Captain.

If he's twisted up inside, he's keeping it inside. I don't know what Riker does to train these guys, but Rourke's keeping his cool. Which is exactly what the crew needs at times like this. And it's probably the last thing Rourke needs to deal with on his first mission as a Captain.

I'm starting to think I made the right choice in taking this position. And I'll also keep pretending that I had a choice.

"Sir," the helmsman speaks up, breaking the relative silence. "We're approaching the Starbase."

"Prepare to drop out of warp. Yellow Alert, Commander."

I nod briskly. "Yellow Alert! I call out." Instantly the soft warning klaxon rings out a couple of times, and the yellow lights come on. I can almost feel the entire ship instantly come to readiness.

"We're here, Captain."

"Drop out of warp. Half impulse the rest of the way. Ops, get a full sensor scan of the debris and start collecting your data. Bellatrix, scan the area for hostiles. What are you seeing out there,Lieutenant?"

Not a second has pass since the order was given and the seasoned officer immediately begins scanning the area for any hostiles. She was impressed by the accuracy and speed of the scan and continued until she was satisfied with the results.

"Captain, I am reporting no contacts, the entire sector is clear. No warp trails nothing. No signs of cloaking or residual energy from phaser or photon or even disruptor based weapons"

She continued to stare at the screen with a look of disappointment and compulsively tapped the screen.

Rourke twists his head to looks back at Bellatrix. "Nothing at all?" She nods efficiently. "This is damned peculiar. Ensign Puk, confirm readings."

There's a few moments of silence while we wait for her to respond. Then I few more. I look over at her and see her busily pounding buttons on her consoles with three hands. She realizes I'm looking at her and gives me a quick shake of the head.

"That's confirmed, Captain."

Rourke's expression remains unchanged, and stays focused on the screen. As if he could stare hard enough and force the answers to appear. "Helm, take us in. Nice and-"

I assume the Captain's next word was going to be slow. But I'll never know because a pair of torpedoes striking the underside of the saucer section prove to be an effective interruption.

The ship lurches upwards, putting so much strain on the inertial dampners that anyone standing, like myself, are quickly thrown to the floor. "I thought we were cloaked!" Rourke shouts over the now blaring red alert klaxon.

"We were," I say, crawling towards my chair and throwing a look at Bellatrix. I'm almost in my chair when another torpedo strike pitches the ship, and rolls me away. From the angle of the pitch, I'd guess it hit the stardrive section.

"Helm, evasive manuevers! Full impulse!"

The ship suddenly lurches forward as power is dumped into the impulse drive and unleashed. There's a flash of light on the screen as a torpedo narrowly misses us.

"Bellatrix, drop the cloak and get our shields up now!"

"And find that damn ship!"

"Bellatrix, drop the cloak and get our shields up now!"

"And find that damn ship!"

"Acknowledged, dropping shields, setting it to 150% strength, bit of a drain on the reserve battery but let's not take risks. Initiating scan"

Bellatrix stares at the screen hoping for something, as Rourke & Vaughn return to their seats. Once again, she is left disappointed.

"Nothing, it's like we are being attacked by a ghost. This isn't possible, unless ... unless they are using an extremely advanced cloaking device OR they have found a way to subvert or absorb the sensor signals."

"I suggest we retreat because we are sitting ducks here. "

I can hear it in her voice. The last thing Bellatrix wants to do is retreat. It's also the last thing I want to do. Well, the second to last thing. The last thing I want to do is die. And while I might be a fighter, I also know when it's time to pack up and run, and come back with the cavalry.

"Agreed." Apparently Rourke knows this too. "Helm, make your course one-six-five-mark-twelve. Warp factor six. En-"

"Incoming!" the helmsman shouts as he pulls us hard to starboard. The ship shutters as the shields absorb the impact.

"Get us the hell out of here." Rourke orders.

"I'm tryin' sir," Cobb replies, tapping furiously at his console. The ship shudders again, lights flickering. Sparks shoot up from the helm console and Cobb shouts in surprise, covering his face.

"Get away from there!" I've rarely seen a man move so fast. Rourke is out of his chair before I can even move to stop him. He grabs Cobb by the shoulders and shoves/throws him to the side.

And then the helm explodes.

Everything seems to happen in slow motion as the explosion lifts Rourke off his feet, sending him flying backwards. He hits the rear rail with a sickening thud and slumps to the floor in a heap.

For a moment, the world is silent. Even the alert klaxon stops as we all stare at the Captain. And then this ship shakes and the world kicks back into motion.

I'm at the Captain's side, my fingers probing his neck. I'm not a religious man, but I throw a few prayers to whatever deities I can think of, and even the Bajorian Prophets for good measure. And my fingers finally find a pulse. It's not strong, but it's there. And it's only after I feel the first waves of relief that I notice the burns and damage to the Captain's face and body, and my stomach tightens again.

"Bridge to Sickbay. Bones, get your ass up here. The Captain's down!"

I'm knocked off balance as the ship shakes. Without helm, we're stuck flying on our last course. The ship is in chaos. Several rear bridge consoles are shorted out, smoking, or on fire. Crewmen struggle to put it out. The bridge air starts to thicken with the smoke. I take a deep breath...and my training kicks in.

"Puk! Transfer helm control to your station. Cobb, get up there and fly the ship. Bellatrix, fire everything." She gives me a confused look. "I don't care where you aim. Aim everywhere. Aim randomly. Just hit that damned ship. And when you do...blow it hell."

The world around her burns, bodies being flung everywhere, even the Captain's heroics resulting in him being rendered comatose doesn't phase her. She had experienced far far worse. Though her heart was thumping against her chest.

The Commander bellows at her to fire randomly, suddenly a spark of genius that may or may no work, "Computer! Calculate the trajectory of the last missile hit and fire of 8 photon torpedoes at full spread. Fire a phaser arc so that it sweeps back in forth at increasing angles, also from the last hit position.

The ship does so but the void of space is too large for successful blind fire. She continues firing of more volleys at increasing angles with multiple spreads but to no avail

Finally in her rage, she slams a fist against the screen, "This is madness!"

"Aye, sir!" I yell into the commbadge as I leave Sickbay. The ship is shaking, the nurses are holding on for dear life...and Dr. Peters is nowhere to be found.

It takes me a few minutes to navigate through the ship and up to the bridge.

"Where's he at?!" I yell to the cew on the bridge.

"Over here!" I wave McCoy over from the turbolift. He's down beside the captain in no time.

I stand up, letting the doctor work. I look over to the ops station. "Cobb?"

"Busy, Commander." The young man's fingers are a blur. I glance at the screen. The stars twist and spin in patterns I didn't think a starship this size could manage. I hate to think what the inertial dampers are going through. Honestly, it's making me a little nauseous. But it seems to be working. The ship's stopped taking impacts.

SHUDDER

I'm glad I didn't say that out loud.

"Bellatrix, save the torpedoes. Keep firing phasers. Don't give them-" I sound from her console interrupts me. In fact, it interrupts pretty much everyone on the bridge. The only two who maintain their focus are Bones and Cobb. Everyone else looks at Bellatrix. Her board makes the sound again.

The sound of a hail.

While the rest of the bridge runs around frantically, I stay focused on Rourke.

Shallow breathing, but a steady pulse.

I pull open his eyelids. The pupils don't contract in the light. The scratches and burns on his face are cosmetic, minute at best. The large knot on the back of the head worries me the most.

"Nurse Johnson," I say into my commbadge. "I need you on the bridge ASAP. I believe Captain Rouke has a mild to severe concussion. We have to move him down to Sickbay for treatment."

While Bones calls for help from the Captain, I just stare at Bellatrix. Her board beeps again with another hail. I giver her a curt nod and she opens the channel.

"This is-"

"Federation starship. You have invaded Romulan territory. Drop your shields' and prepare to be boarded."

I bite the inside of my cheek to keep from telling him just where he can that idea. "Romulan vessel, you are on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone-"

"The New Romulan Empire does not recognize the mistakes of its predecessor."

I look at Bellatrix and slash my throat with my thumb for her to mute the connection. "New Romulan Empire?" She looks just as clueless as I feel.

"Great. Zealots." The Romulan Empire has essentially fallen, and we've fighting a group who want to install their own version in it's place.

We need a plan. I need a plan. "Bellatrix. Start tracing their transmission. But don't make it look like you're tracing their transmission. And when you do, and I give the signal..." She's typing away before I even finish.

"Put me back on." I hear the sound of the comm unmuting. "Romulan vessel. The Federation does not acknowledge the existence of any new Romulan Empire. The current Empire is still trying to reorganize itself after the destruction of Romulus and Remus-"

"Do not speak to us about matters you know nothing about!" I smile grimly. Got them talking now. "The old Empire fell from weakness. Unable to cope with a disruption."

"The loss of billions of Romulans and the government is a disruption?"

"The Empire should not have fallen!" The anger in his voice is obvious, but so is the grief. I want to guess a former military leader, but it could just as easily be anyone who's life has been thrown into turmoil by what's happened. "And the Empire will rise again. We will lead the Romulans out of the darkness and back into greatness. And that starts with fortifying our boundaries. Our new boundaries. Borders not dictated by..."

I let the Romulan ramble on. I don't really need to hear what he's saying, I've heard it all before. I look over at Bellatrix, hoping for some good news...

"**** and hellfire!"

Tarkon stumbled into a doorway as the ship lurched.

"Alright children," he shouted in a manner that garnered more attention than a red alert ever could, "battle stations! Move it!"

The security team scrambled around him as he unslung his phaser riffle and held it at the ready.

"Soon, baby girl," he muttered to his firearm. "Soon."

"...and with the destruction of your ship, a clear message shall be sent to your Federation, and it's allies. That the Romulan Empire will rise again, and take it's rightful place as a galactic power. But, this time, we will not be stalled. We will not let weak-willed politicians dictate our borders. We will expand, without fail, and we will make this galaxy ours."

I glance over at Bellatrix. She still works furiously at her console. We need more time. I have to keep them talking. Because once the line closes, we lose our chance, and we're sitting ducks.

I have to keep them talking. Think...think...

"********!"

Everyone on the bridge stares at me with open eyes. Even Bellatrix spares me a quick glance before pounding her console again.

"...W-wh-what was that?"

I grin. Now I've got them right where they want us. "I said...********. Do you need me to say it slower? Everything you just said, all that dribble you've been spouting, is nothing but pure, unadulterated, bull. Of course, maybe your translators aren't sophisticated enough to pass on such a human concept. Let me put it in words you'll understand. Only a varuul would believe that diatribe."

I look around the bridge as I speak. Bellatrix ignores me. Puk, and pretty much everyone else, stares at me as if I just signed their death warrants. Cobb is the only one smiling like a fool. I'm starting to like the guy.

"How-how dare you!-" I can just imagine this Romulan commander almost spitting his words in rage

"No! How dare YOU! You invade Federation space. You attack a Federation station and Starfleet vessel without provocation. You jeopardize years of hard work forming an alliance between our governments since the Dominion War. And you have risked all the aid the Federation has been supplying your people since the destruction of Romulus-"

"The Federation destroys the Empire with every subversive act of 'aid' it sends."

"Commander..."

I look at Bellatrix, and she gives me a firm nod. Finally.

Even though I wasn't born on Earth, I am human, and I've studied their culture. 20th century science-fiction always fascinated me. Particularly one rather fantastical saga that spawned films, books, even, what they used to call, television shows. One of the books had a line for situations similar to this that I always laughed at and wished I could use. "I only have one thing to say to that accusation."

"And what is that?"

I give Bellatrix the nod.

Bellatrix declares with an air of murderous intent, "Red Alert. Computer, full impulse." The Enterprise punches forward heading straight for the enemy ship. The Romulans are surprised by this rash move, "Are they insane? Destroy them!"

But before they can fire, The Enterprise shimmers and disappears into thin air. The Romulans are shocked that a Federation vessel having cloaking technology. As they prepare their own cloak, the entire vessel rocks due to a massive shock wave. The Captain demands a status report and is enraged to find that their cloaking device has been disabled.

The Enterprise de-cloaks behind them and fires of a tight spread of torpedoes but the enemy vessel manages to maneuver out of the way. Bellatrix once again tries to ram the enemy vessel which fires it's won torpedoes.

Instead of dodging Bellatrix orders all available energy except life support be used to buff the frontal shields. The Enterprise shakes furiously as it takes the full blast of the attack and keeps going. The Romulan vessel fires off it's disruptor to weaken the shields but Bellatrix turns them off altogether.

As the ship tilts slightly forwards the disruptor beam scorches the surface but enough to burn through thanks to forward momentum. The Romulans are left slack jawed at the display of sheer lunacy as Rourke looks like he is about to have a heart attack.

As the ships reach collision distance"Same thing but for weapons. Divert all power to weapons and FIRE EVERYTHING!" The result is the equivalent of a point blank shotgun blast as the opponent ship is torn apart by torpedo's, phasers, phase cannons and even the point defense turrets. Bellatrix had figured out they were keeping their shields at half strength to buff their weapons.

Unfortunately, one of the Enterprise nacelles is damaged due to the close quarters assault hindering warp ability. Bellatrix restores power equally among all systems and keeps her finger on a final trump card.

Inside the Romulan ship, the captain is screaming his head off and smashing his console, "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! DAMAGE REPORT!" One of the bridge members informs him that essentially the entire front of the ship was badly damaged leaving them with their engines and the aft torpedo bays.

They are hailed, Bellatrix shows up on screen, raises her pinky and index fingers at them (Romy equivalent of the middle finger) and signs off.
Back on the Enterprise Bellatrix seems relived and worried at the same time, "We are out of torpedo's. I suggest we use the trump card and destroy them with phaser fire. They are only disabled and will be able to come back online in a few moments. This is fun." she smiles a wicked smile. she smiles a wicked smile.

Sickbay

The ship is shaking from the battle going on outside. Here in Sickbay, I'm fighting what appears to be a losing battle.

Running my scanner over the unconscious captain, I can only shake my head.

"I'm not detecting any REM or higher brain functions."

Nurse Johnson hands me the detailed read outs of the scans.

"Oh, my God."

"Doctor?"

"Nurse, it appears to be Captain Rourke is comatose."

"What do we do?"

"Move him to a bed for the time being. I need to talk to Commander Vaughn to see what we'll do after this."

That is, if we survive this skirmish.

That my dear Commander is called the Bellatrix Maneuver, it's like the Picard Maneuver but several times more reckless and dangerous. Trust me, these so called Romulans have been crippled and all I need to do is activate the trump card and our friends here are space dust. However, since we are not Klingon I suggest hailing them and demand an explanation for their actions.

She was enjoying this too much for her own good. Romulans tend to be rather
uptight but once in a while there is one born with a healthy amount of crazy.

I grunt, wondering how close to the line between brilliant and clinically insane our chief of security actually is.

"I think we've already hear their explanation. Keep a lock on them and hail Starfleet. Tell them our situation and request immediate reinforc-"

The red alert klaxxon seems to somehow get even louder before the computer speaks. "Intruder alert. Intruder alert."

"Oh hell..." The whine of a transporter begins to fill the bridge.

"All hands, intruder alert! Chief, get your people moving. We've got company!"
