View Full Version : Kat Dennings joins the cast

Natalie Portman (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/natalie-portman) has a lot to look forward to in Kenneth Branaugh (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/kenneth-branaugh)'s "Thor (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/thor)" film, which she's scheduled to begin production on soon as Jane Foster (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/07/13/natalie-portman-joins-thor-cast-chris-hemsworth-confirmed-as-lead/). Anthony Hopkins (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/anthony-hopkins), Idris Elba (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/idris-elba) and Chris Hemsworth (http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/chris-hemsworth) are all confirmed to be starring at her side, but Portman dropped a potential casting bombshell this weekend while promoting her new film "Brothers." "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" star Kat Dennings may have a role in "Thor" as well.
"Well I'm really excited," Portman told MTV News. "Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she's a good friend and an amazing actress, so I'm looking forward to that."
The "Thor" cast is already full of big names, and most of the obvious characters from the comics have already been cast, but Kat Dennings' arrival would still be huge news -- though it raises a sizable question mark over who she might be playing.
Portman seemed enthusiastic about her own part and the world of Asgard that Branagh will be adapting to film.
"Well, I was really excited when they told me Kenneth Branagh is directing it because it seemed like such a smart choice but such an unexpected choice, that it was like 'This is really weird. I have to try this,'" Portman said.
Arriving in the Marvel Universe's rendition of Norse mythology has required a lot of education, but she's currently hard at work figuring out how it's put together. "Yeah I've been learning more about it now," she explained. "I was really unschooled about the world of Thor before."
Dennings previously said that she'd like a shot at Tim Seeley's "Hack/Slash," (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/10/05/kat-dennings-wants-hackslash-movie-makes-pitch-for-comic-book-movie-role/) but she made no mention of "Thor." There aren't many big female parts left in Asgard, but Dennings definitely has the moxie to pick up the part of Enchantress if she happens to be in the script. That's just a hunch, mind you, but the floodgates of speculation are now unofficially open.SOURCE (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/11/23/exclusive-kat-dennings-joins-thor-cast-reveals-co-star-natalie-portman/)
Perhaps she will be playing that Marcy role that they were casting? Or maybe Karnilla?

Good actress. I liked her in Nick and Norah.
Although I don't think she fits Enchantress for those who inevitably suggest it.

She is probably going to appear as a Midgardian (mortal) alongside Jane Foster. I would definitely not cast her as Karnilla, who should be older and more imposing.

I'm thinking Karnilla myself. IF they keep parts of the first draft, Karnilla was a younger student if I recall right, which was how Loki took advantage of Karnilla

If Portman knows she's cast and mentioned it I'd say she's an employee at the hospital or a friend of her's.

At this point, she could very well be up for any female role, but I find it hard to read the casting call for the Marcy character and think Dennings is possibly up for a different role.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the casting and says her character will work for Portman's Jane Foster. Sounds a lot like that Marcy character
Kat Dennings has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ “Thor.”
Marvel is keeping a closed lid on Dennings’ role in the Kenneth Branagh-directed project centering on the Norse god of thunder, though sources say she will be working for the character played by Natalie Portman.
Portman plays Jane Foster, who in the early comic book lore was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character is being updated for the feature adaptation, with Foster being a doctor-scientist type.
Portman accidentally broke the news during an interview with MTV News earlier today.
Chris Hemsworth is starring as Thor with a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend and Idris Elba.
Shooting is due to begin in mid-January in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Dennings, repped by CAA and Management 360, is best known for starring opposite Michael Cera in “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.” Other credits include “The 40-Year Old Virgin,” “The House Bunny” and the upcoming Woody Harrelson starrer “Defendor.”SOURCE (http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2009/11/kat-dennings-in-thor.html)

That'd be some spectacularly bad casting because Hela is a menacing DEATH goddess . I would have thought someone like this would be far more appropriate:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b362/aimelek/TILDAHELA.jpg
Let me put it this way, 90% of women in comics are drawn with an unrealistic, top heavy Barbie-doll figure. Rarely do we see anything smaller than a C cup. Sword women for example ain't going to be busty for very long even if they start out that way. The reason is quite simple, they would burn a lot of fat in that area and breasts are almost entirely composed of adipose tissue. Contrast this with male characters who are depicted with far greater range of body types. If artists strived to be a little more realistic in portraying female characters chances are Hela would be extremely tall, rangy and dare I say it...flat. She's half corpse you know...

And probably some others. Depending on the story. Dark Elves, Frost Giants. Howard the Duck.
As long as we don't know who's in the script, everything is possible, casting wise.

With Natalie Portman spilling the beans about Kat Dennings having a role in Thor, fanboys rushed to theorize who she might play. Interestingly enough, a recent tweet from Kat's Twitter account may shed some light:
"Hell is gonna be awesome"
Could this be a subtle hint that she will portray the goddess Hela, daughter of Loki, ruler of Hell? She does have that certain "devilish" look about her. Also, she is about the right age and look to portray someone that is the daughter of Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Just a possibility for now. Hopefully, Marvel will come out with an official announcement soon to quell any rumors.

Well, there is this thing called "exercise" that is supposed to allow humans to lose unwanted weight. I assume she may utilize it if she indeed has the role ;)

I don't think she's "pudgy", and the Norse Gods (while not immortal) age slowly, so a youthful appearance is deceptive.
Franklin Richards
11-24-2009, 12:09 PM
Hela doesn't need to be buff. She just needs perspective to appear taller. Plus there are these things called girdles and I'm sure that Hela costume would be full of deceptive layers.
I could see her in this part. With some major direction from Branaugh of course.

True. But you think "Hell ruler and goddess", a sort of imposing and intimidating presence pops into your head. And she doesn't really have it, young face being a large part of that. I saw someone suggest the woman who played Michael in Constantine, forget her name. Seemed like a good idea.
Oh well, will wait for confirmation from Marvel now that its leaked.

Also remember that Hela is Loki's daughter, so if Hela is in the film it would call for someone pretty young compared to Tom Hiddleston. Also, Hela wears a head dress that covers all but her mouth. So all those point are a bit moot anyway.

But her tweet that comes shortly after people start speculating her role in Thor must be looked at closer. Also the Hollywood Reporter doesn't know anymore than we do. Hmmm...there is a club called The Ivar in LA. I found out this little tidbit:
When: Every last Wednesday of the month 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
One Wednesday a month, Club Hell takes over Façade, filling it with darkwave-themed art, glow-in-the-dark go-go dancers, BDSM players, some really impressive Goth-fetish fashion, and lots of red neon. The whole place is spectacular; hit it.
Perhaps young Ms. Denning was speaking of attending this le petite soirée sadique! Is it the kind of thing she'd be into? More detective work is required!

What if this Darcy character is actually Hela on earth (hehe), disguised as a mortal to make sure that Thor doesn't learn whatever lessons he is supposed to in order to get his powers back, keeping Thor from being able to provide any sort of threat to Loki and his evil army, and paving the way for her father's invasion of earth/midgard.
I know nothing about Thor save for the basics. I'm more familiar with the Ultimate version, so I'm just making a guess. But if it's confirmed she is Darcy, but the tweet says "hell will be awesome", it could be a possibility.
