View Full Version : The Avengers Assemble With Only One Female?

We all know that Kevin Fiege gave us our Avengers roster at SDCC '09 and this is what we know as of now:

Thor
Iron Man
War Machine
Captain America
Nick Fury
S.H.E.I.L.D
Black Widow
Some of The Hulk universe people.

The only female on there (on the team itself) is Black Widow, which I really don't have a problem with. My only problem is, why only her? Why can't we have Janet or Ms. Marvel? I'd be happy for just one of the two but with only Black Widow being mixed in the group, doesn't it seem kind of well...like a sausage fest? I like the line up, I do...I just feel like we need at least one or two more female roles, Janet and Ms. Marvel would be my picks, I don't think they can do Scarlet Witch, can they?

I'd be very suprised if Janet doesn't get added in. Wasp is, IMO, the definitive female Avenger. You must have her.

I can think of five reasons why the Black Widow might end up being the only female on the Avengers team (at least for the first film):

1. It's much easier to reuse an established character like Black Widow than introduce a new one like The Wasp or Ms. Marvel.

2. The Wasp, one of the best known female Avengers, might be considered too wimpy by the general audience because all she does is shrink and shoot tiny Wasp Stings. The Black Widow, on the other hand, wouldn't be considered wimpy, and would therefore be a better character to use in a movie about superheroes.

3. Movies like Elektra bombed, anything to do with female superheroes is now considered box office poison, and Marvel isn't about to fill a movie with characters they think will kill it.

4. Marvel thinks men are more interested in watching movies where all the action and fights are carried out by other men, so they see no reason to put females in many action-heavy roles like members of a superhero team.

5. Marvel doesn't want to take risks with their first big-budget superhero team movie, so they'll keep it simple. They'll cut down on the number of characters and only use ones they know are big draws.

Saying that, I think Marvel better add The Wasp to the roster at the very least. She was a founding member, and if I recall one of the longest serving members, so if any female belongs on the team it's her.

I agreed with all of them but #5. If the rumors of them having War Machine and Hulk in there, those are more than likely going to be strictly CG. Plus, with Disney backing them, I don't think budget will really be too big of an issue, but all their problems won't be solved. For all we know, she could still be on the team and we just don't know it. Kevin Fiege said that Zak was still writing out the list, back in SDCC.

I agree completely that the Avengers film needs more women. Not just fan service women either.

Ms Marvel would be perfect for the Avengers film. I can't wait for Wanda to be added in the sequel as well.

#5 does not concern budgets or undecided filmmakers. Actually, #5 concerns Jar Jar Binks and the Twins from Transformers 2: RotF.

Marvel might decide they only want to use characters from their previous movies because they already know whether or not people like them, and the Avengers movie will have the best chance of succeeding if it's full of characters that people are known to like. Basically, Marvel might want to showcase all the Optimus Primes and Bumblebees first, and wait till they establish a good reputation and fan base before they add any potential flim-destroying Twins to the mix.

I'm not saying Janet or Ms. Marvel would be as crappy as the Twins or Jar Jar, I'm just saying that they're not proven characters, and Marvel would be smart to rely on proven characters in a big budget superhero flick that absolutely cannot fail because it is supposed to jump start a franchise.

Isn't Wanda property of Fox?

Oh, now that I see it like that, I agree. It just sucks.

What if Black Widow is in it but not an Avenger at all?

If Natasha is the only female then you have a team with two athletic people with insane combat skills, and two blokes dressed in armour that do almost the exact same things. Plus Thor.

Seems a little boring to me. Even having both Hank AND Jan whose powers are primarily growth related, you have the giant powerhouse, and the underestimated tiny stealth shooter.

The tricky thing about suggesting an actress for Ms Marvel is you need to choose someone with class. Someone who can give orders and be a heroine not just a fashion accessory. She needs to be the person who doesn't look silly joining in a discussion with RDJ and whoever they choose for Steve Rogers.

A Jodie Foster level actress or Kim Cattral. Not an underwear model.

I think Charlize Theron would be a GREAT Ms. Marvel. She's attractive and a DAMN fine actress.

A smaller team is understandable if you want each character to have more screen time (X3 proved why big teams won't work, with characters like Angel appearing for like 1 minute of screen time) I'd be ok if it was the big 3 + Black Widow and another female Avenger to keep this a non-sausage fest. If the origin part of the story isn't very long then they can squeeze in more characters.

I can see it, but she wouldn't be my first pick for Ms. Marvel.

I think it has more to do with Ant-Man... if you aren't going to feature him as a founding member, why have him there is the first place, let alone his wife? I think they want to not only limit characters, but since he won't be introduced in his own film, it may seem a little forced or rushed. I wanted the Ant-Man movie but Marvel had other plans. Maybe if they delay Avengers a year and fast track Ant-Man for 2012 they can work those characters in.

Im thinking the Avengers is only going to be the big three with an assist from SHIELD including BW making her a member by the end. As far as Wasp and Hank are concerned maybe they can be existing members or scientists for SHIELD. This way you dont waste time on origins.

Meh, I can go either way.

To be honest, not a lot of actresses seem to be very good in CBM anyway. Only a select few have done pretty good, imo--Gwyneth Paltrow (and to a lesser extent) Liv Tyler come to mind.

Cause they are all damsels in distress that scream and make out with the hero throughout. Bosworth's Lane was a joke. Dunst... we know how that turned out. Eva Mendes. Jennifer Garner, well at least she had some action so it wasn't terrible. But it's basically an 80's movie for the most part. X-Men is probably the only exception, for obvious reasons. A shame they ****ed up that franchise up as well.

LostSon88
02-02-2010, 09:28 PM
Which is interesting when you consider the two good examples I had (Tyler & Paltrow) were not 'damsels-in-distress' in their films...at least not to the extent of those you mentioned.

As far as Alba is concerned, she was simply eye candy anyway...

02-02-2010, 09:48 PM
Tyler was not a believable scientist. Unless I am just not remembering the psychotherapy scenes her character may have had with Banner. Maybe I am not remembering or they were just edited out. Alba, as you said, just ran around in tights and the rest was CGI. One of the reasons Iron Man was big was because the Potts relationship was a breath of fresh air to people. You won't exactly feel bad for Stark if he doesn't end up with the long time assistant, but you will feel bad because it's the one girl he wants but can't have. Cliche as it is, it's new for CB movies. On Wasp, if the character is given an insignificant role with little to no screenplay to work with, she may come across as the Marvel version of Tinkerbell, and that's what would worry me.

They had to have been edited out because honestly I don't recall them ever touching on her abilities as a scientist...the most we got was a photo of her in a newspaper article that Banner had with him.

She was in front of a chalkboard, lol.

But as far as Tyler, I meant she was good in the sense that I actually liked her character. She never came off as desperate (Bosworth) or b*tchy (Dunst, Garner, Alba, Holmes, Gyllenhall) or boring (Connelly). Her character came off as very genuine and you believed that chemistry she had with Edward Norton.

I really hope they will have Wasp in this movie. Cast a no-name and save some bucks, but by all means have her in there as one of the founding members of The Avengers. Would that be so hard to do?

Am I the only one who doesn't want to see War Machine in the Avengers movie? He's too ingrained in the Iron Man films, it's not Iron Man 3, it's "The Avengers". All we need is Iron Man.
