it looks cool, that's reason enough
* why does captain america have little white wings on his head?
* why does flash have gold wings on his head?
* why does wonder woman need an invisible plane?
* how could namor's ankle wings keep him aloft?
if it looks cool it does have to be practical or have a reason for existing
i thought flash had golden thunderbolts on his head.

Ditko and McFarlane had two completely different versions of the costume.
The version you are describing is much closer to the McFarlane version.
Yes they are different, but McFarlane said he went back to the Ditko version for inspiration on his version. He brought back the underarm webs, he made the webbing tighter, and he also made spider-man more wiry again.

Spiderman suit is always same
Superman suit is never same
such a flawed thing to say when even in the comics spideys suit looks different by every artist...
this is a freakin reboot...it isnt going to be the same costume...you gotta be outta your mind if webb is gonna say "nahhh raimi had it near perfect...we arent gonna change it and possibly live in the shadow of the franchise a couple years before us"
thatd be retarded
lets not do raised webbing...webbing thinner...and either ultimate or romita eyes!!

In the comic world, they had explained it was made from a blanket that Kal-El had wrapped around him in his Kryptonian pod, knitted by his mother (which led to problems with people asking why is it sometimes indestructable yet she can cut it :hehe:).
On Lois and Clark they showed his costume get shot up. Lois asked him why it got destroyed (because bullets bounce off when he's wearing it). He explained his body gives off an aura (like 1-2 mm or something) that actually protects the skin tight material when he is wearing it. Explanation worked pretty well.

what do you mean by kO_oky?
Reminds me of the Spectacular Spidey cartoon eyes. The white part looks dented inward, weird, too small and roundish. For some artist this has always been a problem drawing, it's gotta be the right balance.
Todd McFarlane's eyes were too big, yet, the 60s Spidey eyes were too small. Again, a nice balance is needed. But that suit looks cool.

Personally i like this. I wouldn't mind seeing this on the film and if they indeed do use web shooters then i feel they need to at least make is plausible instead of making it bulky. Kinda stretch it out like half-way up the fore arm

I remember that and I completely bought that explanation. It clarifies why his suit doesn't get ruined when he gets shot a billion times. In short, while he's wearing it, the suit is as invulnerable as he is. Nothing can damage the suit unless it can also damage him.
I guess the ER docs in Returns must not have gotten that memo.

It's really hard for the designers to walk the line of "something a 16 year old could make" and something that looks like a bad cosplay. I think some of the bells and whistles raimi's design added (for example the raised webbing) and the materials used detracted from this problem...

Although, I would like to see him tear it a few times... then deal with the problem of sewing it back up or whatever, like in the ultimates.

One, don't give "Ultimates" credit for that aspect. That was around long before Bendis. Two, I kind of agree but didn't see it as that big a deal. Although I did think that when MJ showed up in his doorway, he should have maybe been doing something, either repairing his costume or studying.

I could form an opinion on the second one if it had a symbol. That said, looking at the 3rd image makes me think that maybe raised black webbing is the way to go; some of us loved the design from the Raimi movies too much to want a radical departure from it, and others are hoping to see something a little more traditional. This would be the best of both worlds.

I think you got a little mixed up. I was referring to the concept art pics from marvelboy's post. And Acheson's webbing wasn't as shiny as in the pic you posted, although I reiterate that silver is the color of spider silk.

Silver raised or embedded or printed or sewn webbing, I think, would just draw more similarities between the reboot and Raimi's films.

Just an idea. What if the webbing was like the yellow lines from the kick ass costume, so he can sew them after they get torn or damaged. And i made them less like in the SSM tv show style so they can look more practical when he repairs them.

I have a prediction that the new costume will be almost the same (since the original is fairly faithful anyway) but two minor changes:
But I think a bigger emphasis will be on the black around the eyes, so it looks a bit more 60s old school.
I also think the webbing will be black but instead of being raised, it will be the opposite and sink into the costume, making the surface of the red area look like mini square cushions, if that make sense.

To be honest, at the end of the day... we're going to get a Spider-Man costume,
- it's going to be Red, Black and Blue.
- It's going to have white eyes.
It's not going to have some crazy ass new style just because it's a reboot, it wouldn't be the Iconic Spider-Man costume that everyone knows and loves. :/
ALTHOUGH, Like loads have people have said... It'd be nice to have a costume which is slightly more faithful to the comics, with larger eyes.. webbing which isn't/has a silvery tinge.
_
I'm only saying this because I've seen (pages back) some people who had ideas for like, a hockey mask or something as part of the new costume? That'd be cool for a re-imagining or something I guess... but it'd just flat-out SUCK for a normal, comic book inspired Spider-Man movie.

Example. Say the webbing on the previous comstumes was 100% raised, then the reboot comstume should make it 25%. Like the webbing has been sewn right into it.
So it looks good quality and not too cheap, but not expertly crafted like the previous one.
The web shooters should just be customised from ordinary mechanics. This ond looks like it came from a regular wrist watch.

Good thing I was too young to be around for all of this. I didn't even know a Spider-Man film was getting made until the summer of 2001 where my mom told me. Although I wished I found out when Maguire was cast. I looked back into some articles. It's really weird. The choice for director and lead were chosen in the same month timeframe. Raimi and Webb were hired in January 2000 and January 2010 while Maguire and Garfield were hired in July 2000 and July 2010.
Anyway, they can do some minor changes. You can't change too much. The eye shape or size, the tone of the colors of the suit, even the webbing. Instead of the 3D thin raised webbing, they can go for a more pinched risen raised look and try to make the webbing more dark.

The web-shooter idea in the second pic is really awesome, I hope they don't go the organic route this time around.
As for the suit I just want the colors to be a brighter and the eyes to be big. The webbing should be black but thin and also slightly raised but not much, just enough to make it stand out. Also have the webbing spaced out a bit more, almost like the Spectacular Spider-Man suit.
That would be perfect.

That mask really reminds me of the tv show and I dont know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I'd also hope that the rear spider-emblem was higher - my gut feeling is that the artist shoehorned that in lower down the back just so it could be seen but it's practically just above the base of his spine.

The eyes can't be too big too. The eyes in the films were just enough in size. If they are going to go more curved, don't make them as big. They will take up alot of the face.

Raised webbing pops more out when photogrpahed. I'll be surprised if they change that. Because flat black webbing in live action could look like a sharpie marker drawn. Not unless it's imbedded into the suit. But I dodn't know, it needs to pop. Same with the eyes. The black dominating the white could also look strange when photographed.

In some shots it might even be invisible. I'm reminded of a comment that Alex Ross made about how hard it is to draw Spider-Man because of the ink outline all over his body. Then I think of the 60's cartoon, where they didn't even bother to draw it all. The video games where you couldn't see it, the number of artists who screw it up or draw it inconsistently, how long it takes for me personally to draw-it is a bit of a pain. But I digress. I agree that the raised webbing is more eye-catching, which I think was the point in the first place.

Seeing that little piece of absolute perfection makes me realise how much I miss Mike Wieringo's work. :csad:
I still think the smaller eyes look more intimidating. The bigger eyes make him more "friendly" seeming, which I've always felt Spidey should be. He is meant to be more light hearted as a character.
Peter is the depressing one.

I'd love seeing that suit personally. It gets the mix just right I think.
Chris Wallace mentioned that the webbing may be harder to see in that style, but I don't think it'd lose that much if it was made a small bit wider, and of course we'd be watching it on a cinema screen (and smaller screens later of course, but if people argue that the only ones who care about the suit are fans, they'd have seen it in the cinema already).

Chris Wallace
07-12-2010, 01:13 PM
It really doesn't fall into this category, unless they're worn on the outside-which I sincerely hope not. Otherwise they have nothing to do with the overall design of the costume. And at this time there's been no confirmation either way from anyone connected to the project.
Anything else on webshooters vs. organic belongs here:

As Spidey has, IMO, the best basic design of any superhero ever, I think it's hard to say HOW to best interpret it. I think many of us agree it shouldn't be tampered with too much, but we also want it to have a certain pizzazz on screen and not (for me, at least) look like some random fanboy you might see at a convention.

I completely agree.
The problem they have now was that the suit for Raimis movies was was damn good and they have to change it, but they have to be very careful how they change it so they dont move too far from the accepted style.
Basically not everyone will be happy with what they do, thats the only definite about it.

Not everyone will EVER be happy with ANYTHING. Hell, in the wake of the reboot announcement, with it now being cool to act like Raimi never got anything right and he should be drawn & quartered, I see NUMEROUS complaints about the raised, silver webbing where once there were barely any. The back symbol was all wrong, the eyes were too big/too small depending on who you ask, and my personal favorite-it was too professional looking. Are we actually going to put a costume down for looking TOO GOOD?!?!?!?!? I know that in the post-Nolan/"Ultimate" era, realism is the order of the day, but we're talking about superheroes here. Are we not going to allow ourselves to enjoy anything just because it doesn't fit the real world sensibilities?

I would agree, but look at Superman Returns :p
batboy99
07-15-2010, 08:55 PM
Well, Superman returns really didnt **** it up though. Yes, the colours were very muted and darker and the symbol was a tad small, but it was still the basic Superman outfit. I mean, give it a brighter red and a bigger logo and its perfect. Its not like they got rid of his cape, threw him in black and said ''here's Superman''.
Chris Wallace
07-16-2010, 07:04 AM
But the elements that you described DID **** it up. It didn't look like Superman. It looked like a Superman wanna-be. Superman is supposed to be bold, ostentacious. That's just a part of who he is-his character, his image. He's not supposed to be subtle. Darkening his colors and shrinking his symbol makes it seem like he's embarrassed to be seen in it. I never once throughout that entire movie felt like I was looking at the Man Of Steel. (Hell, GIVE ME the capeless black suit over that eyesore!) You don't downplay what makes the character. I feel the same way about the concept art for Cap; it's just wrong.

I agree with that but it was still superman. its not like they got rid of the cape and gave him a leather mask or something. I do agree it was stupid to do those things but it still looked like superman. He was still recognizable.

"Recognizable" isn't good enough in my opinion. We set the bar really low when we accept that. Sure it had the basic elements so we knew who it was supposed to be, but I want more than that. Clooney's suit was recognizable as Batman but it was still a horrible design. Hammond's suit was recognizable as Spider-Man but it looked like crap. I don't want "Recognizable as..."; I want "Captures the true essence of" at a minimum, and at best "Is truly, definitively the look of..."!
