Greeetings sports fans, it's that time once again! Time for Brett Favre's teary retirement press conference, followed weeks later by his equally teary comeback press conference...d'oh...that's later. Sorry

Right now it's time for the annual Superhero Hype Super Bowl thread! Yay

This year brings us the clash between the New Orleans Saints, and SurfDUI's Indianapolis Colts

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/immortalfire/18.png VS. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/immortalfire/11.png

We'll have plenty of ribs and stuff on the grill,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/immortalfire/bbq-ribs.jpg

and who knows what surprises along the way. So bring on the discussion, picks and whatever else. The 2 week party for Miami (as usual)..begins right here! :yay:

Haven't decided it yet which team I think will win the SB, but I'm leaning toward the Colts simply because Payton Manning is playing out-of-this-world right now, and he just dispatched the #1 Jets defense. Saints' D is considerably softer than Jets', so Manning may have a field day with them in Miami.

El_Citrus

Manning will definitely tear the Saints defense apart, but the Colts' defense is nothing to write home about either. Both teams are great at getting pressure on the QB/stuffing the run, but don't have a very good secondary, which Brees and Manning will light up all day. It will depend on which defense steps up more. Sharper and Vilma or Freeney and Mathis.

I think it will come down to points and posession. They both can score but the saints run better So i'm picking them.

Meh, I don't care either way, but Brees deserves one and I feel like the NFC is due so I'll vote New Orleans.

Your Indianapolis COLTS - 37

Colts will win with the MVP being Manning.

I'm growing a bit tired of the Colts (even though I don't hate them), Patriots or Steelers representing the AFC in the Super Bowl as it has been for the last several years. It's why I picked the Jets yesterday.

Which call are your referring? The not roughing the passer or the catch on OT that was questionable?

But Brees deserves a ring. I think they got in on a lot of shady calls, but the Vikings made it come to that with all their mistake.

Like I said last night the Vikings were the better team on the field (the fact they had to beat themselves shows that), but the Saints made fewer mistakes and deserved to win the game.

Dr. Evil

Brees does deserve a ring, but I don't know. The Colts torched the Jets defense, which was #1 coming into the playoffs, and the Saints don't have as good of a defense as the Jets.

Even though you were going off on Manning and how many spoiled calls he and the Colts were getting yesterday?

Personally, the Saints, and the city of New Orleans NEED this Super Bowl to give them something to help forget Katrina. Drew Brees deserves his ring after what he's done for that city, and even older veterans like Sharper.

Matt

The catch and the pass interference. I can get the catch, if its not 100 % conclussive you can't overturn the call on the field (the call on the field never should've been a catch, but I digress)...but the pass interference wasn't even close. It went right over his head, unless the receiver could jump seven to ten feet in the air, that ball was uncatchable. To give the game away on a bogus PI call...a legend like Favre, no matter how wish/washy deserves to go out better than that.

Going with the Saints. Nothing against Manning and the Colts... but I think it's Nawlins time to shine. Brees is amazing and they have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. They were a bit shaky yesterday but still pulled out a win against a very tough team.

The Vikings repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. That game will probably forever be remembered as the Fum-Bowl. Seriously, could ANY of the Vikes hold onto the ball in that game? The Saints had their share of screw-ups too, but my God, the Vikes seemed to follow up every good play with a disaster.

Maybe not, but the Saints certainly have a far better offense than New York and the Colts defense aren't so great themselves.

None of the bad calls determined the game though.

That is such a load and I am sick of hearing it. Katrina was five years ago. It sucked, but its over. Why does the media and people feel the need to keep playing that angle? Are they that desperate for a gimmick?

AFC is still the dominant conference. In the 80's is was pretty much Washington, Giants, 49ers. Then it was the Packers, Cowboys, 49ers. Now it's pretty much those three teams. Very difficult for NFC teams to win it right now. I think we'll get some new blood the next decade though. Ima say it will be the Cowboys, Giants, Packers in 2010's. Or sticking with the AFC, Colts, Chargers, Jets.

New England and Pittsburgh greatly underachieved this past season. Pittsburgh didn't make the playoffs and New England had an early exit in the Wildcard round. Unless both teams make major changes to the roster, I think those two teams run among the AFC's elite may be over.

I think eventually San Diego will get to a Super Bowl and replace either Pittsburgh or New England among the AFC's elite. The Colts have shown really no signs of decline, as long as Manning is still playing at a high level of course.

If Sanchez in his second year throws up similar stats to Aaron Rodgers, the Jets may be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

Arizona is not going to be an elite team, because I think Warner retires and they regress big time with Matt Leinart probably playing like Brady (Quinn, not Tom). Also the defense needs to be fixed.

There are parts of that city still in the crapper after what happened and tons of people still struggling to fully recover, whether it be financially, emotionally, whatever. Many businesses left and never came back. It would certainly be a nice, comforting distraction for the families that are still daily reminded of five years ago if their team could bring home a Super Bowl.

Anyway, I'm still rooting for the Saints, based on how much they've sucked over the years, talent wise, and at one time were an embarassment to New Orleans, and now are finally having success. Manning has his ring, and I want to see Bress get his.

If Warner retires (and even if he doesn't) they should franchise tag Boldin, who doesn't want to be there anymore, then trade him and their number 2 or 3 pick to the Chiefs who desperately need a receiver for their first round draft pick. They should then draft Colt McCoy. As for defense, I agree. They need some fresh blood and the first place they need it is coaching. But I have no doubt that Whisenhunt will realize this and make the necessary adjustments.

More or less. I am still going with the Chargers next year with a decent off season. Maybe this Jet loss is to them what the Colt loss to the Steelers was in 2005, and they go on to win it next year. Manning probably has another 4-6 years left. AFC will probably still be dominant for another 4-5 years. The Manning/Brady familiarity pretty much elevated the level of play of every team in the conference.

I think you're jumping the gun a bit there. It's been less than a year since Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl and less than 2 years since New England had an undefeated season. True, both teams underperformed this year, but I think it's a little too soon to consider them done.

New England is done. Their defense is completely shot. What happens when Welker and Moss get old? Brady isn't nearly the same QB since the injury. They need to stockpile draft picks and find the eventual heir apparent. Steelers might bounce back, but I don't see them getting back to elite.

Thank Zeus for this matchup. If the game had have been Jets/Vikings, it would marked the first professional football championship game that I've ignored in my 103 years of paying attention to the sport while trapped on this mortal plane.

There's no way I'd have subjected myself to two weeks of Rex Ryan's mouth (not top mention his catastrophic effect on the seafood community in Miami. I could have just forgotten about going to Joe's Stone Crab anytime soon) and the incessant Old Man Favre shlurpage. I'll happily take the contrived Archie/Peyton stories, the relentless dredging up of Katrina and even the inevitable burn about Brees considering signing with the Dolphins before that snake Saban essentially insulted him. That's much more palatable to yours truly than Rex the Wonder Stomach, Super Bowl III allusions, having to deal with our Lord and Savior, Brett Favre and hearing the word 'Sanchise' repeated an average of 23 times daily by ESPN's 79 NFL analysts. **** that.

As for the game, I hope it delivers on the potential promise of a shootout. It doesn't need to be a retread of Arizona/Green Bay, where the concept of defense was a cardinal sin (Get it? Cardinal?), but I want some points. New Orleans will obviously need to play better since I doubt the Colts will Keystone Kops their way through the game the way the Vikings did. I don't even care who wins. I just know it won't be Saint Brett. Good enough for me.

In conclusion, No Favre = Happiness.
Yes, I'm inordinately petty. Leave me alone about it.

Also, the Pro Bowl is this week.

I also can't stand Rex Ryan's mouth, even though I root for Jets. However, you can't deny that he has made a difference in the team, esp. their defense. Once Sanchez can figure things out and stop having those 3 INT games, and actually helps the team win, the Jets would be a major contender.

In the Pats' case... I think we need to give Brady more than one season before we say that the injury has done him in. I don't think he was 100% at the start of this year, and even so, he won his division and took the team to the playoffs, despite the early exit. I do agree that the defense needs work, though.

As for the Steelers... look, they went 9-7, which is the same win/loss ratio that the Ravens and the Jets had and they made it to the playoffs this year. Granted, it IS disappointing, but it also came about with key injuries to two of the best defensive players: Troy Polamalu (the key to the pass defense) and Aaron Smith (the key to the run defense). Offensively, they were better than they were during the Super Bowl season and most likely would have gone deep into the playoffs this year had the defense not had issues. With those key players back, and maybe a few upgrades here and there... they could be back to the elite in no time.

Funny how after the tapes got destroyed, they encounted a series of unfortuante events. Losing those draft picks, Brady's health, Adalius Thomas showed the kinks in the wall, good luck finding more bellibrainwash followers.

As for the Steelers...

**** a Steeler, they are the racoons of the AFC. I don't see what they have over the next 2 seasons by way of improvement in their division alone, let alone the next 5 seasons. They've changed their philosopy, and it looks like its workin pretty well.

They should've won, I don't feel bad for them. They squandered several drives that I think would've been the difference between winning and going to overtime.

The defense managed to overcome the mistakes their offense continued to make.

I do believe the Vikings were screwed over by that call on Leber. However, once the Saints had the coin toss I would've put all my eggs in the basket to figure they would win due to the lack of mistakes they didn't make.

You can easily run on the Saints D, but their pretty good at defending the pass. Ive seen a couple of Saints game this year, and their D usually has guys walking around the scrimage get ready to blitz, they didn't do too much on 1 and 2 downs, since they were worried about Adrian Peterson. Now against the Colts, they are able to do what is the strength of that team.

Trust me, all week we will be hearing how great Peyton is going to play, and he usual plays great, in his dome.

Jets can defend the pass better than Saints, and they have Darrell Revis who shutted down Reggie Wayne (who had 3 catches for 55 yds. I think). But with Payton Manning as the QB, every receiver is a threat, and Colts won the game with other two receivers. Jets' D only allowed 2 offensive TD per game before they faced Colts in that AFC Championship game, and Manning scored 3 TDs; I doubt Saints could do a better job imo.

Oh Revis is the best corner in the league, you don't have to tell me that. I didn't say Saints D were better than the Jets, since they have trouble stopping the Run. What I am trying to say is that this game will be a lot closer than everyone will think, possibly the Saints pulling it out in the end.

Meh, I don't care either way, but Brees deserves one and I feel like the NFC is due so I'll vote New Orleans.

Part of me is actually rooting for the Colts (I feel dirty saying that). The Saints dont deserve a win after getting in on such a dirty call.

Ummm, no, Matt is not going for the Saints according to his posts AND his vote...

so Deadspin has put together a photo scavenger hunt for anyone attending the festivites in Miami

Sadly, no one from Deadspin's masthead will physically be traveling down to Miami this year to take part in the annual Super Bowl festivities. Unfortunately, that does not mean assorted media personalities and athletes can carouse freely without torment. Continue.

Thanks to some assorted insiders deputized as spies in Miami's drunken playground, we'll be able to get updates on what some of our favorite moving targets from Bristol will be doing as coconut days on radio row turn to temptation nights with assorted carnes de rua.

But! Those of you in Miami who aren't deputized will also have an opportunity to make this Super Bowl week special for us. We've allocated some funds for a good ol' fashioned scavenger hunt. Here you'll find a list of the prices you could be paid if you can send us visual proof of the below. (We'll make the final determination on the photo's authenticity.) You can either take that money and donate it to a fine charity (how noble!) or deposit it in that blood money savings account you've been meaning to open up. There are three lists: Media, Athlete and Celebrity. Some photos are worth more than others, obviously, and the menu below is far from comprehensive. So aim high! It's for the children.

Sounds like the little prick was trying to cause trouble.

Anyhow, I'm just not excited for this Super Bowl. I mean, the two best teams in the Super Bowl is boring to me. I want an underdog or some kind of story line. The best the sports media can pull out of their asses is Hurricane Katrina which was nearly six years ago and whether or not Peyton Manning, a guaranteed first ballot hall-of-famer, needs a second ring to solidify his legacy. Thats the best we've got. There's just nothing to really hook me or see it as anything more than another football game. I''ll watch, but I don't really care. I'm not excited for it like I've been in past years.

I do remember turning off the game in the third, during the Giants halt of 19-0. I think I went to sleep, I missed the catch live. The Superbowls haven't relly disapointed, sine Oak v. Agreed. Though unfortunately, the bad part about the NFL compared to the MLB is that the best team does not always win. Its both the best and worst part of a one and out format.

I think this is going to be a great Bowl! No matter who wins!

I'm not sold on it. High scoring, sure? Great, not so much. Neither of these teams have much of a defense to write home about so it'll pretty much just by a gunslinger match up until one of the offenses finally makes a mistake that determines the winner. Make my football, a 6 to 3 game with tough hard hitting defenses, preferrably played in the rain or snow. Now that is real football

Sean Payton is an amazing coach. The fact that someone would try to undercut that is ridiculous...and stupid.

Agreed. He's the best thing to happen to N.O. in a long time. I personally think he deserved coach of the year. Caldwell didn't deserve it as he pretty much inheirited a great team (plus we all know Peyton Manning, not Jim Caldwell is running that team). I think it should've came down to Childress and Payton. The fact that Lewis got it is disgusting. He pretty much got a lucky division win because the Steelers and Ravens played like crap this year. But the only thing he has proven by once again self-destructing in the stretch, is that Cincinatti cannot win when it counts under him. But alas, the AP loves the "under dog coach who turns his team around." At least the Maxwell Club got it right.

Any how, I'm picking the Saints. Not because I think they're the better team (the Colts are better), but because as last week showed, they are the luckier team, and thats what this Super Bowl will come down to. Neither team has amazing defenses to shut down the other team's dominant offense, so they will shoot it out until the fourth quarter when one team's offense makes a mistake. The Colts are a very young team and they are due to make one. So I pick the Saints.

I really dont see how this should be close.

1. Saints amazing passing offense vs. Colts hideous secondary
2. Colts cant run the ball; New Orleans has an excellent 2ndary

I see the Saints in a blow out.

Want to let the 6-4 posters know something. I had you give me the score/MVP for a few reasons. One, someone could have changed their pick to something else before the game started.
