Chris Evans is one step closer to the role of Captain America.

From the Holmby Hills grounds of the Fleur de Lys Estate, where the hoity-toity were bidding on the first Ferrari Italia in the U.S., to the tables of the Spanish Kitchen, the talk Thursday night and Friday was about Evans’ offer of the role of Captain America.

Marvel has not confirmed the development and CAA, which reps the actor, declined to comment.

Evans' offer would include starring in up to three "America" movies plus "The Avengers" movies and appearances in several other Marvel movies. While an offer to star in "America" may seem like something you don't have to mull over too long, one possible complication is that Evans is committed to co-starring in the Anna Faris romantic comedy "What's Your Number?" Both are scheduled to shoot this summer.

The role of Captain America and his alter ego Steve Rogers has been one of the most heavily scrutinized parts by the industry, the media and the comic book fandom in recent memory.

Evans wasn’t in the initial round of actors being considered, which for the most part leaned to the newcomer side. Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, Wilson Blethel and Mike Vogel, on top of John Krasinski and Chace Crawford, were those testing and reading. Garrett Hedlund was also someone Marvel was interested in.

Evans, who did not screen test, already has a relationship with Marvel, having starred as Johnny Storm, the fire-covered superhero in the two “Fantastic Four” movies that Fox released in 2005 and 2007. There is some question whether fans would be accepting of an actor who already played a Marvel superhero just a few years ago, but given that the movies were not well embraced, with no one faulting the actors, Evans might have a clean slate with moviegoers.

Joe Johnston is directing “America,” which shoots in England.

Evans, also repped by 3 Arts Entertainment, has the DC Comics adaptation “The Losers” in the can and also appears in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the popular Oni Press graphic novel series. Sweet Jesus. Make it happen, Marvel! And advice to Evans, if I was given the choice to star in a rom com or freaking Captain America, I think I'd go with the latter.

I really like Evans & he's my 1st choice out of the current crop, but I gotta be honest that I was really pulling for Hedlund most recently. He would have been the best choice IMHO. Too bad Marvels trying to go cheap as possible (might just bite 'em in the ass, though!)

It kind of says a lot, on the contrary.

If Evans is auditioning, then he's obviously interested in the part, and it's up to Evans to impress Marvel & co. enough to garner an offer.

Not everyone who auditions is offered the part -- in fact, the very nature of auditions usually mean only one person gets offered the part.

Timberlake was not in the final 3 candidates. He was eliminated earlier on. The three finalists were Reynolds, Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.http://weblogs.variety.com/bfdealmemo/2009/07/ryan-reynolds-is-the-green-lantern.html?nid=2854

Chris Evans needs to realize that if he wants to be taken serious as an actor by a WIDE audience (the general audience is going to simply flock to the theaters to see Cap), he needs to take the role of Captain America. A Rom Com is just a hole digger, I don't know any actors that can get out of hole once it's dug.

Hahah .... this was a quote from somebody at the San Francisco Chronicle who reviewed the movie "Sunshine" (gave it an "F" too)

Then there's the crew, which we will now consider, but first think about this: When you get on a passenger plane, don't you feel good when the pilot looks and sounds seasoned? How would you feel if the pilot were a towel-snapping 25-year-old?

Leads me right back to the Alex Ross comment and things we've discussed numerous times on here when it comes to who can pull off a "Captain" .....

Ebert BTW said the only thing effective about the cast was that they were not trying to be too effective.

Will Chris Evans Play Captain America? (http://www.deadline.com/2010/03/will-chris-evans-play-captain-america/)

By MIKE FLEMING | Friday March 19, 2010 @ 7:46pm EST

es, Marvel Studios made Chris Evans an offer to play Captain America. But I hear that the testing process will continue because the actor is conflicted about jumping into another superhero role, after playing Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four installments. This could certainly be bargaining table posturing, because Marvel drives the toughest deals in town. But other actors have turned away from big superhero movie roles. They include Heath Ledger, who turned down Spider-Man because he didn't want to be typecast or sign for three movies (he later came back for an Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight). Josh Hartnett turned down the chance to play Superman several years ago for similar reasons, even though the three-picture pact could have paid him nearly $100 million. Marvel is offering far less, and asking nine options.

Chris Evans is the equalivant of Ryan Reynolds.

Both actors ARE TALENTED but are mostly known for comedic roles but still have range for dramatic roles.

Both are talented but for some odd reason couldn't make their 'it' movie yet, to make them huge stars. Obviously it will change with Green Lantern and Captain America.

If Chris gets Capt, then again, he'll be known for playing multiple comic book characters, just like Ryan Reynolds.

My theory is that because of that charisma and their history playing really cool action characters, studios cast guys like Evans and Reynolds because they know that they may even draw some male audience into their romantic comedies.

I know this, I would resist, with all my power, watching any romantic comedy with Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner. But Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans? Perhaps.

Ah.

Of course, they don't need Cheadle or Scar Jo's name on the marquee, because Robert Downey Jr. would probably be the main name although Cheadle and Scar Jo would bring some star power. It would be Downey first, then Jackson, then Norton, then Evans and finally Hemsworth.

Maybe he wants to be taken more seriously and think that playing in an another uber expensive comicbook movie will hurt his chances of that. It doesn't help that the director isn't all that special. If this movie fails it could hurt what career he does have. And the fact that he's apperently already signed for that romcom doesn't help matters.

The long, drawn out process to determine who will carry the shield of America's greatest super-patriot is over. Sources have confirmed to HitFix that Chris Evans has been offered the role of the title hero in "The First Avenger: Captain America."

Other candidates for the part included Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillippe, John Krasinski and Mike Vogel. HitFix has learned the word about Evans' casting came down this afternoon to the other potential Cap's that the role was Evans. Some of the other new actors auditioning for the role had not even met with director Joe Johnston yet when the decision was made.

Evans is hardly a stranger to comic fans. He previously played hot-head Johnny Storm in 20th Century Fox's two "Fantastic Four" movies. Assuming Evans takes the role, he'll be committed to a number of future Marvel films including "Captain America" sequels, "The Avengers" and appearing in other Marvel Universe pictures.

The 28-year-old actor last appeared on screen in 2009's Sci-Fi thriller "Push." He'll star opposite Zoe Saldana in another comic book adaptation, "The Losers," next month. He'll follow that up with "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" which is based on a popular series of graphic novels.

On a humorous note, this may be the second blonde Marvel hero the brown-haired Evans has played, but did not dye his hair for. Fans were initially ruffled when Evans stayed dark-haired as Johnny Storm so will he pull out the peroxide for Steve Rogers? Stay tuned.

No word officially from Marvel Studios or distributor Paramount Pictures at this time.SOURCE (http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2010-3-19-breaking-chris-evans-confirmed-as-marvel-s-captain-america)

Ryan Renyolds did 'The Proposal' with Bullock - it hasn't dented his comic movie appeal one bit - In fact it did the most important thing - It greatly enhanced his box office appeal.

Evan's can do both - most rom com's have a short shoot time, and a few call backs later on. It can be fitted in, along with the Cap movie

Well, as I mentioned I'm not being affected by the FF connection--it's a moot point to me. If anything, I felt that Chris was wasted in those films anyway. I've seen him in just about all of his movies, so I know he can act. He has swagger--but it may be a bit too much for Captian America. But he's talented, muscular and charming...all of the important ingredients for a successful live action Cap. Could it be inspired casting? Only time will tell.

Therefore, I'm looking at him solely from credibility for THIS role, as I would do any other actor being considered. I will say this though: out of all of the frontrunners in the loop for this character, I am most comfortable with this option. I trust Chris because I am well acquainted with his body of work. Agreed. I know many fanboys were jizzing their shorts over the thought of him wearing the blues, but I always thought it'd be one f***ing tragedy if he were cast. This newsbit over Chris Evans at least crunches that possibility.

Then again, it could ALL be one big fat rumor and Marvel may bring someone else out of the mix. I'm just trying to picture Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. interracting. How does that look?

I was hoping they would get someone ''new'' for this role, but Evans is by far the best choice from all the contenders.

as i said in the casting thread, and the contender threads. Evans is who i want know we know he has been given offer by marvel studios. So hopefully he will take it. HE has the looks, he is a decent actor, and he could hold his own with downey/jackson/norton i think. And i would definately want him over tatum or that stan guy. So crossing fingers we will get confirmation from marvel or evans soon enough.

But wouldn't you agree that you have that perception because he's only played those roles in the past? It's called typecasting. :oldrazz: I have every expectation that if he takes this role, he will not be comedic. And when he joins the Avengers, Tony will be playing that role more anyway. LOL

If he gets the role, I can't help but think people will see Johnny Storm and not Captain America. As he was one of the two people in the Fantastic Four movies who did their roles well.

I know what you're saying, but I doubt folks will have a hard time making the transition. They accepted Halle Berry as Storm and Catwoman (:whatever: ), and they'll get over Ryan Reynolds as well. There are some stark differences they could make to really set Chris apart from the Johnny Storm role, especially physically: If he beefs up more (he's already cut, but he could use more mass) and dyes his hair blond, that'd be two very serious departures from Johnny Storm right there. Couple that with more serious mannerisms and I think people will make that transition.

Besides...the FF films weren't exactly blockbusters. MOST people sat out of theaters for them--especially the second film. So unless they rent them, his role in that series will be largely slept on by the average moviegoer.

The Fantastic Four films were only medium-large in the fanboy world. That's it.

I can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic with that one. As long as he doesn't play Cap as a smart a s s like Johnny, then we should be ok. I don't want him to be moody like Batman, but he should be more serious.

Interesting that you say that, because since I never bothered to see the 2nd Fantastic Four movie, the last 3 movies I've seen of Evans' were serious ones: Sunshine, Street Kings, and Fierce People. So it's been several years since I've thought of him as a "funny" guy at all. And even back when I did, I remember seeing London and hating that movie, but I remember thinking he showed great promise as a dramatic actor in that. So to me, he's just a good actor, and I'm excited at the prospect of him finally getting to do a mainstream role that lets him use some of the gravitas he's brought to these smaller movies.

And actually, I can see him fitting right in with RDJ, SLJ, etc. I can picture them all going out for beers together, lol. Sure, he'd be the "kid" of the group, but Cap would be anyway no matter who was cast, because Cap is just supposed to be younger. I can certainly see him as the kid who knows how to give orders when he needs to, and who won't take crap from RDJ, either. ;)

i for one will be happy once its all confirmed by marvel on who is cap and with all the evans news i really hope he does sign. he is the best of the bunch currently and i think he could really shine in the role. As for the whole romcom maybe he can do it if its not due to shoot say may/early june and he could get the workd done. Or if he isnt stuck to some commitment deal like emily blunt was and had to pull out of doing ironman 2. He will take the cap role. Or marvel/paramount/disney could pay to take evans. Or if their is not contractual issues he could just walk from the romcom and they recast his role.

I know, and I've been wrong plenty of times before. When I first heard that Ledger was cast as The Joker, I was like "... really? I dont see it." But Nolan knew what he was doing, and Ledger ended up blowing me away. This however, unlike Nolan's casting, doesnt seem like Marvel's perfect choice for the role, it just seems to me like Marvel's been sitting around with their thumbs up their asses for a while and when it finally came time to get down to buisness they were like "Oh ****, we're almost out of time. Get as many 22-30 year old actors in here as you can.... Chris, you're the best of the bunch, let's make a deal."

Like I said, I could be very wrong here, but for the time-being, I'm not very excited.

Our dear friend Jerk-Bot, a robot deeply embedded in the film and movie industry, has made a few points about the Chris Evans casting news that he’s heard around the campfire and they are points that I think are worth repeating.

Chris Evans was simply offered the part. He has not accepted anything yet.
Fox could play spoiler on this one, just like they did when they prevented Emily Blunt from playing the Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Evans is still contractually obliged to a third Fantastic Four movie if they choose to do one. Although it’s been said they were doing a reboot, it’s not inconceivable that they would jump in and keep him cast as Johnny Storm.
It is Jerk-Bot’s understanding that Evans might be under contact for a sequel to the Losers as well, if the first one is a success.
Because the studio is offering only $300,000 (a “paupers salary” for so big a role) it’s conceivable he might just turn it down.
Word around the campfire is that they still might be testing Kellan Lutz (if his Twilight obligations allow) and Alexander Skarsgard, just in case.

So we can all be as excited as we’d like about the idea of this casting, but we’re at a stage where anything can happen.
So, take the Chris Evans news with a grain of salt and wait until you get an official announcement before you go completely insane, one way or the other.

I honestly would not be surprised--in the least--if FOX tried to cock-block this arrangement and pull some s*** to keep Chris tied to FF. That studio is known for being messy, petty and vindictive. For example, they killed James Marsden off for double-playing with Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and ended up cutting their own damn toes off. However, Marvel could get equally nasty if they do decide to pull a clause on Chris.

Then again, FOX didn't seem to care when Halle Berry signed on to do Catwoman and she still came back for X3's Storm, so...anything can happen.

This is the stretchiest stretch ever. Fox pulled Blunt off Iron Man 2 to fulfill a contract on a film that was entering production, they didn't change their plans for their franchise just to cockblock. Which is what they'd have to do to get Evans off Cap

I still like Alex Ross suggestion of Jon Hamm. and no, I don't think hamm is too old. He looks experieced and has a built in stoicism and heroic presence. I just don't want Cap to get the Chris Pine Kirk treatment. I can't see Evans in command of hard men on the battle field and having the physical presence that is a must for the character. I'm not sure if we'll get the Captain America many of us like to see in a movie. it will be a version of Cap, but ...well, it may turn out to be another Incredible Hulk(which was an OK movie) or worse, an X-men Origins: Wolverine. but, I may be jumping the gun....
