View Full Version : Protaganist?

I know this might be a bit controversial but I think we need to talk about it.

The X-men movies had Wolverine as a lead who let the audience connect with in order to experience the rest of the X-men.

Captain Kirk was the same sort of thing with the Star Trek reboot.

I would say all ensemble casts need someone to stand out in order to see the other characters as the audience will. Who do you think should be the protaganist?

For the sake of the argument, I'll pretend we'll just have a main protagainst for the first movie. I'll say Captain America since he has so far had the most attention regarding solo movies and also since he is the team leader, it would be a great chance to see each characters attributes and weakness as Steve sees them.

After the first movie, most people will get it and you can focus on everyone altogether.

If there has to be a main protagonist, it should be Captain America. This film should show him rising to the challenge of being leader of the team. Not to mention he is pretty much an underdog on the team compared to the god, the man with the battle suit, and the guy who turns green and smashes stuff. He has to adjust to the modern times and keep up with the new generation of super heroes.

Star Trek is a good basis to use since I felt it gave all of the character something useful to do and balanced the screen time way better then the X-Men films did even though it did have a central protagonist.

This makes me think of the first Hellboy when they shoe-horned a new agent in so he can see the other characters like the audience does. Didn't work then, and I don't see why it would work now. Isn't the whole point of doing origin movies of the main Avengers is so the audience is already comfortable with the actors in their roles?

It worked very well in Star Trek.

It should be about Cap and him becoming the leader but my fear is that it will become Ironman and friends. Because as of right now he is there bankable star marvel knows people will see a movie about him he will have already had two huge blockbusters and by the time the script is done they still won't really know how Cap and Thor were recieved

I've been worried about that as well.

I don't want Iron Man to be the Wolverine of the Avengers film while Cap is the Cyclops.

This is my biggest fear for The Avengers movie.

Because we introduced the characters in their own movies, I don't think one main protagonist is needed for the audience to "see the characters", but if we we have to go that route, I'd want it to be Captain America and focus on his struggle between adjusting to his new Time-Era and becoming the leader of The Avengers.

Hawkeye! or Cap. Yeah I'll probably go with Cap.

Dang, I chose Cap right away and didn't look at the last option. Most of the avengers will have had movies by then (not sure about ant-man or Hawkeye...if there is Hawkeye), and it wouldn't make a lot of sense to single out one of them to be the main lead. It's like saying that one hero just had to have two lead roles, and everybody else just doesn't matter.
The cool thing about it is that they'll not waste any time on origin stories and can go right to the story.

If they had to go with a main protagonist, the obvious choice is Cap.

But, if they wanted to go with a different route, they should really focus on Bruce Banner. If they're going to go the route of Hulk being a villain, I believe we'll be getting an unofficial Hulk sequel. Banner would be on the run and conflicted about what is going on. When he's ultimately captured he tries to prove his innocence while Betty advocates for him. When he's needed for a possible final threat he is reluctant about lending his help. Ultimately he accepts his power and tries to move on. I believe there is a lot of potential for Banner in an Avengers film. Cap would be the best focus, but Banner would be a close second.
