View Full Version : The "Easter Eggs/References" Thread (Spoilers to minimum)

Hello.
One of the things I absolutely LOVE about these types of movies are the little Easter Eggs and continuity nods and references in them. However, you sometimes miss them if you don't know where to look. With the movie now out in some non-North American markets, I think it'd be cool if we compiled some of the known nods and easter eggs in IM2. Although this is the spoilers forum, I suggest that, since the movie has not yet had it's big North American release, any BIG spoilers be put in spoiler tags like this.
I'll start with some that are known from the reviews and news going around:
After the credits, we have a scene where Agent Coulson of SHIELD locates Mjolnir in a New Mexico desert

Saw it today! Liked it a lot!
Here's one that posters on another board might like:
Coulson and Tony both handle Cap's shield. Well an unfinished version of it anyway. I don't think it's the actual one Cap uses because I t=would guess that it might be lost with Cap and Tony/his father was working on a new one and abandoned it. Cool to see how Coulson seemed in awe of it where as Tony....not so much.

Not really a easter egg or anything, but in the trailers at least (someone who is lucky enough to have seen the movie can confirm for me) you can see Obadiah Stane in some of the pictures of Stark that Whiplash has on his wall. Nice nod to the last movie and how it was said that he and Tony had been such good lifelong friends and business partners.

Around the end of the film, in the SHIELD office, there's a world map with specific locations marked, it'd be interesting to see what could be relevant. I saw a spot in Eastern Africa (Black Panther/ Wakanda ?) and one in Norway (Thor ?).

Not really, it looks plastic and is hanging together. In fact I don't think it was Cap's shield but was actually a prototype designed by Howard Stark.
Why would Tony be building a shield for Cap if he hasnt been found yet?
Coulson picked it out of a box that consisted of Howard Stark's property, so I think it was just a prototype that Howard designed decades ago. Or at least that's what I'd hope is the situation because the look of the shield didn't impress me at all.
The only problem is that Coulson talks about the shield in awe as if it were the original shield that Cap used on the battlefield.

The funniest thing about the whole experince of watching the movie, for me, was making my friends sit through the credits to watch that scene. Having not spoiled myself i didn't know exactly what to expect, but presumed it was something to do with Agent Colsun (? I forget his name everytime i go to write it) seeing as his very pointless character just pissed off halfway through the film
None of them new what the hell it meant and were all pretty angry we missed last orders at the bar because of i made them stay and watch it.
I was thinking - are these kinda 'Easter Eggs' even worth it? Most people don't have a clue what they're refering too, and in this film, to me at least, it felt that Shield/Nick Fury/Agent whateverhisnameis was one giant easter egg for future Marvel films, not serving the plot of the film at all, and in fact slowing it down a fair bit.

I agree. Stick these Easter Egg endings at the end of the movie like in The Incredible Hulk, not right at the end of the credits. Only comic fans get them and these frustrate their friends who humor them by sitting through the credits with them only to frown in bewilderment at what the hell these scenes are meant to mean. It can work just as well before the credits roll.

The one redeeming factor of this movie was that scene. It actually said FU to the general audience in a way. Things like the showing off of the Captain America shield was just annoying. Also flaunting Fury at a random point and Stark creating Vibranium (though was this actually said during the movie? I can't remember hearing it). So the Thor scene made me smile, but all the rest was just a stupid bloody marketing ploy.

Dude. I knew what every reference throughout the film meant. I'm a geek. A closeted one perhaps, but a geek none the less.
What i was trying to say was, with Marvel dropping all these references to the still forming Marvel-Movieverse, are they gonna confuse the non-geeks? Is it worth sacrificing the integraty of the film by filling it with knowing winks to people like us? I had explain who Nick Fury was, who Shield were, who The Avengers were, who the Shield and Hammer belonged too to my friends after the film. They had no idea, and to be honest, didn't care.
I dont mind easter eggs as a bit of fun, but when they're scattered throughout the film, are sometimes at the forefront of scenes and sometimes turned into 'full-on' characters ala Nick Fury (and it is never explicitly explained who he is or what his intentions are - he's just a teaser for geeks like us who know what the crack is), are they getting in the way of the story?
I dunno.

Cap's shield is an adamantium/vibranium alloy. Since adamantium is mentioned in the X-Men movies (Wolvie's skeleton) it may be that Fox has the rights to using it.
Has anyone seen any Mandarin/Ten Rings references in IM2?
ToilesHeroiques
05-01-2010, 10:11 AM
No mention of Fin Fang Foon or Mandarin in the movie :csad:
In fact, nothing for Iron Man 3.
Favreau tells :
"If you look at the screens, especially when you're dealing with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, you can start to see areas identified there," said Favreau of a few moments in which S.H.I.E.L.D. computers monitoring current events appear in the background of a scene. "There are little clues that are layered into graphics that relate to other films, other franchises in this world. You might want to look at it a few times or wait for the DVD."
I see the movie twice and I make a list :
- Europe: no points in Great Britain (Captain Britain, Excalibur, there was something to do !)... but in Scandinavia. Hard to say exactly where, or what it means.
- Africa: East Africa (Somalia, Kenya). One thinks immediately to Wakanda, except that by different sources, the fictional country is farther west. But no doubt that for a film, it is possible to take some liberties with geography.
- Atlantic Ocean: in the southern Atlantic Ocean, between Brazil and Angola. No idea what it could be.
- USA: East side, Washington / New York, probably Tony Stark. To the west, probably Hulk. New Mexico: Thor. A final point in Alaska ...

Vibranium was in Xmen origins wolverine its the rock fragment that they are looking for in africa they use that with two other things to make adamantium, at least in the movies i dont remember how its made in the comics. They never get around to calling it vibranium im guessing because they dont have the rights to that. Probobly goes with the Black Panther were ever the rights for that character may lay

- Atlantic Ocean: in the southern Atlantic Ocean, between Brazil and Angola. Probably Namor, prominent member of Invaders, whose presence in the film Captain America is already assured. The main problem is that Namor is a mutant (he "belongs" to the then Fox) ... but basically, it is primarily a character in the category "Heroes" and not a mutant. If one adds his presence on the map, I think his presence is highly plausible in the future!
- Greenland / Iceland: where is Captain America in Freeze mode? Without doubt, as it says that Captain America is frozen in North Atlantic. Except ... in the DVD of the Incredible Hulk, the body cap is frozen with his shield, but Arctic. The geographical difference is not huge anyway.
- USA: East side, Washington / New York, probably Hulk. To the west, no doubt Tony Stark. New Mexico: Thor.

Which is a little bit confusing considering the shield is also clearly seen in the first movie too. Before he got his Dads stuff.
Tony's father was a founding member of SHIELD in the movieverse and it was amongst his other belongings that Fury gave Tony. But you're wrong, it wasn't Cap's shield, it was a plastic model of the shield with a cross-section of the different layers that make it up.

Its not in Howard Starks crate, it's in a different box. Coulson reaches in and gets it out... I've seen it twice, and the Howard Stark crate it alot smaller than the one he gets the shield from... Also, theres no way the shield would even fit in the howard stark crate.

Also, Pepper was on the phone to Bert from legal. Was that Bert Hingle, Stark's sleazy lawyer in the comics whom Tony fired, and who later represents Bree Daniels, the girl who shot Tony Stark?

It didn't click that it was her. She wasn't old or rotund enough, and she needed a more bossy personality. If she had acted that way, I would've thought "hey, she seems just like Bambi Arbogast!" and then would've been pleasantly surprised to find out later on that it was.
If we're getting Mrs Arbogast, we should've had her sister, Uranus Bliss, who showed up intermittently in the Iron Man comics and Stark kept crashing into her when he rushed off to change into Iron Man.

Just saw the film and it was pretty good. I was kind of down on it for a few weeks but after seeing it I don't have a lot of complaints. I felt like you can watch Iron Man and Iron Man 2 back to back and not have a problem with tone, continuity, ect. As soon as I got into the Iron Man 2 I didn't want it to end bc it felt just like the first movie.
Okay as for easter eggs :
The Cap shield was the same shield laying around from the first movie but we get a better look at it this time around. Tony is looking for something to put under this piping while he's making his new RT and Coulson walks in a picks it up and is like, " Why do you have this?"...seemingly like he knew exactly what it was and how special it was. Tony pays no mind and takes it and puts it under the piping to have something strong to hold it up..haha. The star and the whole center is cut in half so you can see the inner workings of the shield..looks like he was disaselmbling it or building a mach model
I saw the locations on the SHIELD screen and the one in Europe could be Red Skull?
I wish Fury made it more clear to Stark that there are other hero's with powers and not tech suit
Was expecting a better ending scene but oh well. I can't wait for Thor now to see how Stark reacts to finding out about Asgard and Thor's powers and all that stuff...should be funny..

Not really, it looks plastic and is hanging together. In fact I don't think it was Cap's shield but was actually a prototype designed by Howard Stark.
Of course it was. Do you really think that they had that kind of tech in WWII? Seriously people.

Hey just watched the first Iron Man and noticed the Roxxon Corp. building behind Iron Monger when he launches the missile at the bus. Does any one know if it is mentioned in IM2. In the comics it is responsible for many a super villain. Its a nice easter egg in the first one just curious if it pops in the 2nd one at all
Hm, I never noticed Roxxon being in the first film. I did notice that Roxxon had a racecar represented in Monaco. I thought that was a nice touch. Nice user name, btw. :cwink:

Although its not really an Easter Egg, but i love the continues references to the Demon in the Bottle storyline.
Drunk Tony, him not really being fully able to operate his own suit with Rhody going out of his way to teach him a lesson and all of that.
Reason i love these movies so much, is that they hold a great balance of being made for the viewing audience and for the hardcore comic book fan base that gets all these little references. Plus it makes it great DVD/Blu-Ray films to watch and just pause and get these little Easter Eggs.

Okay, just saw the movie this morning:
Not so much an easter egg as a reference, but Howard Stark's expos, and his penchant for explanatory videos of his world of tomorrow, is extremely similar to Walt Disney, his involvement with the World's Fair, his amusement parks and his original idea for Epcot.
Could anyone make out the headlines of the various papers and magazines that flashed by in the film?

The Stark Expo films totally reminded me of the Walt Disney films about Disneyland and Epcot. The music at the Expo sounded like something you'd hear at Epcot too.
I caught the Culver University reference. And besides Cap's shield, I also saw a few Captain America comics among the stuff Tony was taking out of his dad's cast.

I'm sure this was mentioned (I did not check through 6 pages) but it was great to see a Hulk reference:
Towards the end of the movie when Tony and Nick were at the SHIELD safehouse talking about his Black Widow's psych profile on Tony, the news brief on the television monitor was the female Asian reporter reporting about the Hulk incident at Culver University... they showed about 3 clips from that...
I thought that was really cool.
That would mean that based on the timeline when Tony appeared at the end of Incredible Hulk, the events that took place in Iron Man 2 had already occured...
JerseyJoker
05-08-2010, 10:57 PM
But the events at the end of TIH did not happen right after the final fight either, it was basically interpreted that Banner finding control of his rage and the Stark/Ross meeting happened some time after the Hulk/Abomination fight.
LostSon88
05-08-2010, 11:16 PM
When Banner presumably gains control of the Hulk, the screen reads "Days without Incident: 31" before his eyes go green.
So if TIH is happening roughly around the same time as IM2, then a month has passed since both the Whiplash/IM/WM AND Hulk/Abomination by the time Tony Stark goes to see General Ross.

Not really, it looks plastic and is hanging together. In fact I don't think it was Cap's shield but was actually a prototype designed by Howard Stark.
It didn't look plastic it looked tinny. Plus being a tad too small.

Plus Spider-Man shouldn't even be thought of for this group of Avengers. I had always imagine that there could be other generations of Avengers down the road, and Spider-Man could be in the second grouping with others like Luke Cage(if Marvel would ever get their acts straighten out and take the rights back from Sony. It's not like Sony's doing a stand-up job with Spidey, with having Spider-Man 3 a total cluster-**** and then canceling The Spectacular Spider-Man).
It would be just fantastic for a high-school Peter to admire the Avengers when he's in high school, and then becoming an Avenger later on. But, that's my idea I guess and it hasn't been thought of by the Marvel guys, et cetera.

Fiege was recently asked who owns what:
Feige: Well, Fox has mutants and Sony/Universal…Universal doesn’t have anything. Sony’s got Spidey and Ghostrider, and those family of characters. And Fox has X-Men and Fantastic Four and Daredevil and those family of characters. But any mutants in particular? Mutants are X-Men.
so if Namor wasnt a part of the mutant deal and was being made at Universal and they now no longer have athing then its a smart deduction that Marvel now has Namor.....another clue alluding to this was in IM2 when the map had a area of concern in the atlantic ocean

And the shield is referred by Fav as "Captain America's shield", which brings confusion to most, but that doesn't mean it WAS Cap's shield back in WWII. It IS Cap's shield of course, but only a prototype, which Howard must have created to capture all of its fabrics(which is why it's in different layers), and was possibly trying to create a new one for a future Captain America(during the 70s, there were probably no discussions of searching for and/or re-awakening Rogers).

I think i read that it was established that the guy in the prison was Thor,
but I have a theory why he might be there.
Thor looses his hammer which you can see at the end of the movie, but there is no sign of him. Why? Because when he lost his hammer for too long, like in the comics, he lost his powers. So he was wondering the streets of Monaco with no money, no ID, no nothing, and ended up landing in prison. So then he was stuck in prison without his hammer, that is until Nick Fury and SHIELD find him and bring him onto the Avengers.

G:"Senators, Members of the press, ladies and gentlemen. I'd like to read a brief statement before I give my testimony. I am not a planet eating cloud. I do however eat planets and tried several times to eat yours. Its delicious looking and it shouldnt taint my testimony here......"

Wow, I'm really not as crazy as I sound. I watched the movie again since you all like to make fun of that fact that I thought it was peter.
At the end of the movie at during the scene where they were pinning Tony and Rhodes, the senator, tony, and rhodes turn around and get ready for a picture. The camera then movies towards the audience and ONE PHOTOGRAPHER WHOSE HAIR JUST SEEMED TO RESEMBLE THE PETER PARKER HAIR came out and snapped the picture. The camera then goes back on the Senator Tony and Rhodes. END OF MOVIE
Anyone wanna go back and look??? Go ahead. It was just curious. I'm not saying i saw some random superhero in the background. I thought it was odd.

That's why I love the Hype. Reading endless arguments over the same topic. Webshooters vs organic, Joker's makeup vs permawhite, did Joker mouth the word 6 or 10.

Dont take this the wrong way but I got tired of argueing with ppl who will every wednesday go to a store to read about superheroes doing outrageous things but the minute someone wants to do a movie then all that creativity and wonderment goes out the window.
We are getting a universe that includes Hulk and Thor but Namor appearing in Cap is unbelievable. Arnim Zola is cast and everyone thinks he should be a normal human ad not bear his striking look from the comics.

That's right! I'll wait to see how it plays out but it sounds accurate to those times when they would send entertainers out to give the soldiers some enjoyment and motivation. I don't think Cap is going to be dancing like some kind of showgirl.

hmm, he'll probably be lifting heavy stuff and doing flips and tricks like some circus guy to demonstrate his powers. Cap will probably feel humiliated and angry that they aren't putting him in the action and forcing him to do that instead. this could actually be good for his character story if they do it right. but I'm just guessing how it might go. lol

Actually it might be better if he does enjoy what he's doing to an extent, because he's doing his duty, but he secretly wants in on the action. He shouldn't openly be like, "I hate being in this damn USO!"

what is the USO?
The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a private, nonprofit organization that provides morale and recreational services to members of the U.S. military, with programs in 140 centers worldwide. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), and has provided support and entertainment to U.S. armed forces, relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from DOD. Although congressionally chartered, it is not a government agency.
During World War II, the USO became the G.I.'s "home away from home," and began a tradition of entertaining the troops that continues today. Involvement in the USO was one of the many ways in which the nation had come together to support the war effort, with nearly 1.5 million Americans having volunteered their services in some way. After it was disbanded in 1947, it was revived in 1950 for the Korean War, after which it also provided peacetime services. During the Vietnam War, USOs were sometimes located in combat zones.
The organization became particularly famous for its live performances called Camp Shows, through which the entertainment industry helped boost the morale of its servicemen and women. Hollywood in general was eager to show its patriotism, and lots of big names joined the ranks of USO entertainers. They entertained in military bases both at home and overseas, often placing their own lives in danger by traveling or performing under hazardous conditions - some losing their lives.
During the 1990s it delivered services to 5 million active duty service members and their families and today "continues to be a touch of home to America's troops."

Hmm that one is interesting.
I saw IM2 again last night and noticed caps shield...in a second place. When tony shows up to Hammer's presentation, the large graphic playing on the screen in the back has stars and red, white, and blue streams flying in circles. Its real quick, but at one point a star flies through the middle, just as the colors line up,and it looks like caps shield. Thought it was neat. Also,Did anyone catch Fin Fang Foom on the billboard in the beginning? I missed it both times.
