Toby Jones, the British actor best known for playing real-life characters such as Truman Capote in “Infamous,” will play in his first comic book movie with Marvel Studios’ “Captain America."

Jones is in final negotiations to portray a villainous scientist named Arnim Zola in the production, which already has Hugo Weaving as another bad guy, the Red Skull. The movie shoots this summer in England.

In comics lore, Zola was a genetic engineer who created clones and various monstrosities for Hitler. He also captured his own mental self, inserting it into a robot, and survived the war.

Joe Johnston is directing the World War II-set movie, which sees Chris Evans as the famed superhero. Sebastian Stan is playing sidekick Bucky Barnes, while Hayley Atwell is the hero’s love interest, Peggy Carter.

Jones also is known Stateside for playing Swifty Lazar in “Frost/Nixon” and Karl Rove in Oliver Stone’s “W.” He also does voice work for the “Harry Potter” movies, playing Dobby the House Elf, and will soon shoot "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins.

Jones, repped by UTA, will next be seen in Universal's comedy "Your Highness" with James Franco and Natalie Portman.SOURCE (http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/05/captain-america-toby-jones-zola-.html)

Cool. I imagine he wont looks like his comic book counterpart.. cause that would be a little weird.

well yea i bet he will probably be just regular human looking. but maybe they will make a nod to his robotic self so they can leave it he survives into present day like he does in the comics.

haha he'd be perfect for Zola. I assume he will start off as just some normal scientist. Then maybe one of his experiments goes wrong and it messes him up in some way.

But yea i doubt he'll look exactly like he does in the comics, that would just be, well, too out there to say the least.

Ha, great choice--and that Zola is in the film is pretty cool, too. I hope he does look like the comics; that sort of old-school mad science is a part of what make's Captain America great. Obviously they'd want to take a more sophisticated and serious approach, but there's no reason Zola can't work as a gruesome product of mad science.

Now you're talkin'!

I hope we get at least a hint of the comic version. If Johann can work in HB2, this guy can work in a Cap movie!

Tobey Jones in a really good actor - I'm happy with this casting.

He's a good actor I am cool with this. I am wondering if maybe he is working on the ill-fated Red Skull SSS that deforms him.

if they go with deformed Red Skull

Hahaha, YES. Toby Jones is so perfect for Zola.

I'm so curious how this film will play out. We've got Zola, the Invaders/Howling Commandos...this is going to very interesting.

I wonder if Baron Zemo will be thrown into the mix.

i was starting to worry since we were hearing so much about the heroes side and nothing on the villain side save for Red Skull....

This is cool news. I hope we get Baron Zemo as well. As far as what Zola's look is concerned I think it can be done if thought out well. It doesn't have to be a literal translation. I think i've seen something similar to him done before but I can't remember where.

roach
05-07-2010, 10:09 AM
I am hoping for a literal translation...h has a unique look and would be a wate not to use it.....hopefully Baron Zemo is in this

Well I do want the face on a robots torso but I can do without the costume. That's what I meant.

I know that some people want Zola in the suit to nod at the comics but honestly fromt a theatrical standpoint I think it would look pretty ridiculous. I think he can just play the mad deranged scientist part and be fine...maybe towards the end you see the machine in the corner of his lab or something but him actually in it I cant see happening.

Also someone pointed out that we dont know yet if we will have deformed red skull or not. Id like to know more about what people have heard on this.

roach
05-07-2010, 10:42 AM
there are plenty of regular mad scientists in theCap mythos to use...why use Zola if you arent going to use the android body???

Cap is going to be in costume, Red Skull is going to be in costume, the Invaders will be there....why not use the android version of him

marcvader
05-07-2010, 10:44 AM
If your going to make him a normal scientist why bother then.

yea it should be interesting to see what they decide to go with this character. Now yea like i said last night i think we will probably first see him as a regular human looking guy. Then maybe have a nod to his robotic self by end of the film. As for robot look if we see it, will probably end up being a bit more humanize and all that. As for the face in torso deal will we will just have to see what happens there.

Jones is a great choice for Zola. He was one of my picks for Penguin had the character ever appeared in B3, but this is fine...The cast continues to grow nicely.

Was Zola in WW2? Most of the Cap stuff I've read is Brubaker, so I don't know if he was.

05-07-2010, 04:32 PM
well he was created in the 70s from what i read on wiki, and his history was in the 40s, and then he survived into the modern world through robot bodies/cloning.

I only ever saw him in the Deadpool where Wade goes back in time and teams up with Captain America... in that Zola's inside his stupid little suit. Seriously, that's not going to work on film. It's ridiculous in the comics which is multiplied by about a thousand when translated to live-action film. No no no.

Webhead2006
05-07-2010, 10:42 PM
so i was thinking if we do see a nod or end of film he get put into a robot body. What if its a robot body in line of say classic the day the earth stood still gort?

Right on the money right here. He looks like a little freak like Zola himself. When I heard this I thought it was gonna be Doug Jones of Hellboy fame where they would have inserted his face into a CGI tv man. The guy is a chameleon.

I will say this, the only screw up casting so far has been with Captain America himself.

Never heard of Tobey Jones but I'm like Zola in the flim. He's one of Red Skulls most loyal henchmen its only right to have him in this. Red Skull,Hitler, Nazis in WW2 at the peak of their power is all the villains we need for a movie.

I didn't know he was 'Dobby' (aka Putin) the house elf. Plus going by the picture of him on Superherohype's own article (http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/100892-toby-jones-to-play-arnim-zola-in-captain-america) or the one posted by Rock Sexton, it looks like we've got the perfect person to play Robin 'Cook MP - the horny ginger bugger'. :oldrazz:

As for the look of the character, I wouldn't mind seeing something resembling his current look. Although it would have to be tweaked to better fit a movie.

For any of you Doctor Who lovers he will be in the next episode entitled "Amy's Choice". So check it out if you want to see his acting skills. There's a trailer for the episode online that has him in it. Looks to be quite good. Can't wait to see him as Zola.

Looking forward to see how Toby does with the role. Hopefully he has a decent enough role and Arnim Zola isn't downgraded to one of those X-Men 3 like cameo jobs.:up:

Excellent. Toby Jones is a great movie and i've wanted him in a comic book movie for ages... Would've preffered him as Cobblepot in Batman 3, though...

How is it that no one has cared to discuss this awesome character in over a year?
Is he just completely insignificant in this film?

Any more news on the role he'll play in the movie, if he'll take on his robotic form?

Figured this should be posted, concept art for Arnim Zola in his suit for the video game:

I like it, it has the classic Zola face screen without looking completely retarded like the classic version.
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/9863/arnimzola.jpg

And is quite a bit more functionally intimidating than the redux version that I did like, but seemed useless anyways.

I couldn't see him being captivating enough to hold a movie on his own as a villain, I realize he wasn't in this form until after the war, but I thought this had a leaked script like all other movies and someone might tell me if we'd get to see the souped up Zola.

marcvader
06-14-2011, 06:40 AM
No of course he'd have to be paired up with someone.

Look at what Happened to Jarvis for example. I'm wondering if Arnim may be applied like that.

Tobey Jones was pitch perfect in this movie, IMO. I know little about the character other than how he looks later but I loved him in this. The interrogation scene with TLJ was great.

His target...is everywhere.

I love that the first shot of him is his face on a tv screen. Nice homage to the comics.

Bubonic

I hope to see him in a sequel, obviously he would of had to immortalize himself through technology so we'd see him in all his glory.
He did seem pretty reluctant about everything though, I always imagined him being just as evil and maniacal as the Red Skull, not a second guessing lackey.

I must admit, I could have died when the Red Skull and Zola kept talking in English with German accents to each other. You're German, Speak German! It lends itself wonderfully to the cinema and isn't as campy.

Oh well, at least he wasn't an Otis to Red Skull's Lex Luthor.

Movies do that all the time.
In Valhalla, the film starts with Tom Cruise speaking for a bit and Than it's mostly english for the rest of the film.
