Dr. Doom

Mandarin and the Ten Rings-- this character and his "power" would surely be addressed metaphorically; resulting in more of a political/terrorist villain.

Gozer: The Choice is made!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Whoa! Ho! Ho! Whoa-oa!
Gozer: The Traveller has come!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Nobody choosed anything!
[turns to Egon]
Dr. Peter Venkman: Did you choose anything?
Dr. Egon Spengler: No.
Dr. Peter Venkman: [to Winston] Did YOU?
Winston Zeddemore: My mind is totally blank.
Dr. Peter Venkman: *I* didn't choose anything...
[long pause, Peter, Egon and Winston all look at Ray]
Dr Ray Stantz: I couldn't help it. It just popped in there.
Dr. Peter Venkman: [angrily] What? *What* "just popped in there?"
Dr Ray Stantz: I... I... I tried to think...
Dr. Egon Spengler: LOOK!
[they all look over one side of the roof]
Dr Ray Stantz: No! It CAN'T be!
Dr. Peter Venkman: What is it?
Dr Ray Stantz: It CAN'T be!
Dr. Peter Venkman: What did you DO, Ray?
Winston Zeddemore: Oh, ****!
[they all see a giant cubic white head topped with a sailor hat, Peter looks at Ray]
Dr Ray Stantz: [somberly] It's the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

As much as he isn't a classic Avengers villain, I think it may be wise to use Mandarin in some capacity. The first two IM movies hardly did anything to set him up, and if the wait till IM3 to introduce him, he will require too much development and may be underutilized. I think Leader should be involved. Maybe Loki but only in the first act. I'd personally use Cap/SHIELD villains as the main threats, with solo villains like Mandarin, Loki, Leader as advisers.

How I would do it....

Avengers 1) Ultron goes crazy and decides to destroy mankind...Avengers Assemble
Avengers 2)Leader, Loki, Red Skull and Hammer team up to form the Masters and try to destroy Avengers
Avengers 3)Kang or Thanos

I too want to see Dr. Doom done right.

I think an Iron Man movie would supply a better origin for his character (independent of the Fantastic Four). Imagine if Rourke had played Victor Doom in Iron Man 2 instead of Whiplash.

Doom could have led right into the central villain in The Avengers, whether Kang or Thanos.

I voted for Kang. I'm sure that Banner will be what the Avengers are brought together to capture at first, but a greater villain will emerge.

Kang is powerful enough to fight all of the Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk; and Kang doesn't require the audience to accept a space alien into the plot as with Thanos.

I would cast someone like Javier Bardem as Kang:

I would have accepted Rourke as Doom, though he wouldn't be my first choice.

Doom is a much more interesting character than Whiplash.

they'll accept a thunder god but not aliens:huh:

Thor is a transdimensional post human traveler from another Earth. A full blown alien would need to be set up in Iron Man 2, to prepare the audience.

Kang is an old man. Javier Bardem is a great actor, but not Kang.

I'd go with Liam Neeson.

Also, same height (6'4") and Liam Neeson is a swordsman...Kang's favorite weapon in close quarters? a broad sword.

I'd prefer time-travel to be left out of the equation, really. Hypocritical when I like mixing my norse gods with gamma giants and goatee'd billionaires in advanced armour? Probably. But time-travel..... I just don't like it, like a get-out-of-jail card.

I'd prefer Loki (behind the scenes)
Ultron
Thanos

But ultimately, Doom would be ideal. But not going to happen for this Avengers film.

Before Iron Man 2 I would have said ULTRON.

Tech based villain and NO aliens necessary.

Have Hank Pym be a Stark employee and have Ultron run amok. So... Hank, Tony and even SHEILD are all responsible for its creation. Use the "Ultron Unlimited" story as the basic structure. Now, would that be too many robots in too many films?

Remember, "Drones Better."

Personally, if they're going down the alien route, I'd prefer it if they used Thanos instead of the Skrulls.

Kang

Dark Raven

I don't know if this was discussed in many of the other numerous threads. Were the Chitauri just a new alien race in this movie who happened to have the same name as the aliens from the Ultimate Avengers movies (who were actually pretty much the Skrulls) or were they in fact Skrulls? They didn't demonstrate any shapeshifting ability. I'm thinking they were just brand new aliens with the same name.

What do others think?
