While we wait, i found something interesting at Cinema Online. A group of people were given a tour of visual effects company Rhythm & Hues' Malaysian offices where they got to some see effects work for Mystique!

We can't publish the imaging work that is being done - but we did see some editing being done on Mystique's face from the upcoming "X-Men: First Class!"

God, I can't even focus on the details because the image editing is so terrible. I want to like the suits, but I can hardly tell what they look like with the random shadows and varying contrasts. It's ridiculous. And normally I'm very easily pleased. I don't doubt this film will be fantastic, but I am disgusted by this "official" photo.

I come back to the X-boards when there's some news and this is what I'm greeted with.

Is this shot referencing some other cast shot/photo release done on the previous films? Anyone have pictures to compare?

Obviously I will need to see larger, better shots, and I don't hate the designs, but I'm not a huge fan so far either. The detail/texture of the outfits is kind of hard to see, but what I can see isn't great. I guess for the period its in it kind of works, but it's no more interesting for it. And their X-belts are on their chests? I guess I can kind of see where the inspiration for that comes from a bit.

Xavier looks like a tool with that hair.

Mystique looks like Silk Spectre.

Angel is scaly...is she scaly?

Havok's rings look a little silly in this shot. I expected them to be separated a little bit at least. I guess it's literally a chest visor, like his more recent versions. I can kind of see what they're going for there, with rising energy that will explode out of it. Not a big follower of Havok, can someone shed some light on that element of him?

Beast looks like The Wolfman or a Star Trek creature...not horrible, but not terribly memorable, either.

Azazel kind of looks like he's wearing Magneto's suit and Magneto's hair. Interesting...

Don't think Emma's outfit is great, but she'll have several, so not too big of a deal. It kind of makes sense...she is a wisp of a thing.

Can take or leave Moira.

Magneto in an X-suit will take some getting used to. He looks okay.

Will definitely need to see a better, more full shot to get excited about these designs. I feel like if they thought they had great suits, they would have shown them to us, not put them largely in the shadows. I feel like they took shots from inside the Blackbird for half of these and photoshopped them.

That said, story and character, as always, is what makes or breaks this take on the X-Men, not the suits they wear sometimes.

I really want to like those costumes though, but it's hard to tell. The only person who doesn't look crazy as hell in the shot is January Jones as Emma, and she looks extremely posed.

Yeah, but still, it's all about the materials used to make the suit. From the photo, (and it could just be caused from the poorly done photoshop) it just looks cheap. An example: Spider-man's suit. The movie version looks much realistic and better than a halloween version of the costume would.

Looking at this image, it's hard not to choke--so I'm going to step back and glance at it again. The costume design, what little of it we see, I'm not opposed to. Those "wing tatoos" on Angel appear on her shoulders and arms, that's news to me. I'm still not sure about the whole tatoo concept though.

Other than that, the image itself, it's composition or lack-there-of, is very disappointing and I wonder what it would take for Fox, unofficial image or not, to pull it together.

true, but then again moira didnt look a day over 40 in X3. i dont think fox are taking their time with time with the xmen, there rushing their moving out so the rights dont revert back to marvel, the only time that's going to happen is when they run it into the ground, or if marvel makes enough money from the next few movies, especially avenger to buy the property back.

I don't think they're considering 'The Last Stand' when it comes to continuity as Moira is in her twenties in this film and was clearly not in her sixties in 'X3' and Xavier will be paralyzed by the end of the film, when in 'X3' he was still walking to see young Jean. If we say Scott was 35 in 'X-Men,' then we can assume he was born around '65. If Havok is a teenager, then it's possible that his mother could be pregnant with Scott (or have him soon after the film takes place) - obviously she must've been fairly young when she had Alex.

If First Class works as a true prequel to Singer's first two and The Wolverine works as a singular story, I don't see the problem anywhere.

I know Aronofsky has said that he's not following any continuity but unfortunately, with Jackman reprising the role, he's technically in continuity already. As long as he doesn't reference anything from X-Men Origins Wolverine, you could look at The Wolverine as a prequel to X-Men.

All Vaughn really has to do is stay away from any references from X-Men the Last Stand and the continuity is technically set. It'll be a weird trilogy, but a trilogy nonetheless...X-Men First Class, X-Men, and X2.

Now, if Singer does come back and do an X-Men film that's set in present day, then we might have a problem.

As long as Aronofsky and Vaughn stay clear of The Last Stand and Origins, we're good to go.

The average moviegoer isn't going to get into the math of the whole thing. All they'll look at is that it's set before the first film. They'll buy into it...if the film is working for them.

Either way, I think they wouldn't be doing this film if Singer and Donner didn't have big plans ahead for X-Men. Because remember, if they stop making X-Men films over at Fox, Disney gets them back. And Fox isn't allowing that to happen.

I don't congratulate people just because they deliver a great action sequence or set piece surrounded by a poor delivered story. I won't praise that when they're in the business of story-telling. It would be like me applauding someone for their incredibly white teeth while they're ralphing on my shoes.

I get it. This is like what if Xavier had been a member of the original X-Men when they first started, back when he was young and could still walk, instead of starting the X-Men when he was unable to walk and was much older. This is like the Superman/Batman Generations idea where Bruce's first costume identity was Robin. And thats why no younger characters from the other movies like Jean or Scott. They weren't born yet, or were too young. But Beast was older in the movies and was said to be an original member.
This film will show Xavier as team leader, and Magneto as part of the original X-Men before he and Xavier parted ways.
This is like the idea presented in the cartoon and comics, that Magneto and Xavier used met and joined forces, using their powers to aid mankind and help during the War. But he also started the X-Men back then too.

My guess is that we might see Magneto, and Mystique too, break away from the X-Men. And we might see Xavier become crippled, and who knows maybe they will explain what happened to his hair too, with some explanation that is unneeded.

The film is set in the 60s, the costumes look close to the comics (which fanboys have been wanting), Emma looks like Emma (Do we want her all covered up and not in her classic revealing outfit?).

The only issue with the picture is the way they are lined up, which looks random and makes the colours clash. Why put Azazel next to Beast, why put Frost next to Moira? Plus, there are people missing (Darwin, Sebastian Shaw, Banshee).

Not if Fox continues to make more X-Men films. If you've noticed, they've had a X-Men film out every three years.

Disney would have to fork over a huge chunk of change to get X-Men back from Fox. And trust me, I know Disney has all it's lawyers trying to find loopholes with the contracts with Sony for Spider-Man and Fox with Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.

They already got Paramount. Trust me, they're trying.

Best case scenario this is a slow gradual burn that wins people back like Batman Begins did (which opened OK/so-so but held like glue for the entire summer back in '05 before settling on a very solid $205 M and killed on home video).

I'm mostly just hoping for a big "X" somewhere on the suit. I think these occupy a happy medium where they don't conflict to heavily with the standard set by the horrible leather costumes, while also managing to evoke the old-school X-person uniform.

I'm not particularly bothered by the lack of individual variation in the costumes; I like the uniforms to have some consistency, and the X-Men pictured generally aren't the ones for whom I feel strongly about individual costume features (Magneto excepted, but at this stage I wouldn't expect him to look anything like Magneto, anyway).

Looking at the costumes, this is going to be a very colorful film, ala Kick-Ass. Having these bright costumes in a solid black background was just the wrong way to go. They need to release retro 60's inspired posters to match the outfits. That's step one.

Step 2 is to hire someone who knows how to use photoshop.

Step 3 is to make INDIVIDUAL posters, as having a line up just looks odd because it's basically 9 separate photos pasted on top of each other.

It seems at the last minute Fox realized their mistake and pulled the reveal from MSN, and is taking the image down from various sites. Hopefully tonight, or tomorrow we have a better "reveal".
