The applications are stupid. Have you read the license agreements? The Extended Info one gives the developers everything on your profile: name, school, your favorites, even your profile picture.

Facebook is a networky site (kind of like myspace without all the background/music/retarded customization) which was originally for college students only but has recently opened up to everyone.

Thats how I ended up on MySpace. However, I don't see it happening with Facebook. I already graduated from college and so did most of my friends. Facebook is still considered a college site. So, its not something popular with my group of friends. Although I know a few who have it, my sister included.

Obviously you haven't read the privacy statement, where they openly say that they sell your info to third party statistics companies and the like. Why do you think they ask you so many questions? You know those polls and statistics that come out of nowhere? Don't be suprised if you are represented in one.

Facebook photos land Eden Prairie kids in trouble

More than 100 were suspended from activities or reprimanded after being shown drinking at parties.
By MARY LYNN SMITH and COURTNEY BLANCHARD, Star Tribune
Last update: January 9, 2008 - 5:46 PM
var clickURL = "http://www.startribune.com/local/west/13549646.html?pt=y";
var partnerID=252396; var _hb=1; window.onerror=function(){clickURL=document.locati on.href;return true;} if(!self.clickURL) clickURL=parent.location.href;

Eden Prairie High School administrators have reprimanded more than 100 students and suspended some from sports and other extracurricular activities after obtaining Facebook photos of students partying, several students said Tuesday.
School administrators and the district's spokeswoman didn't return phone calls, but students called in by their deans over the past two days said they were being reprimanded for the Facebook party photos, which administrators had printed out. It's likely, they said, that other students among the 3,300 who attend Eden Prairie will be questioned throughout the week.
Danny O'Leary, a senior who plays lacrosse, said his dean displayed four Facebook photos of O'Leary holding drinks and told him he was in "a bit of trouble." One photo shows him holding a can of Coors beer, another a shot of rum, he said. In yet another, O'Leary is pictured holding his friend's 40-ounce container of beer.
"I wasn't drinking that night," O'Leary said. But that apparently doesn't matter. "I was told each picture was equal to a two-game suspension,'' he said.
O'Leary said he intends to meet with the director of student activities today to discuss the suspensions. He said he will point out that two of the photos were taken two years ago, before he joined the lacrosse team and signed a pledge not to drink.
"I'm personally pretty upset and wondering why someone would collect these photos and turn them in," O'Leary said. "A lot of kids' lives are going to be ruined as far as scholarships and sports are concerned."
O'Leary said the school's actions are likely to put a dent in underage drinking among students but not stop it. Kids will just be smarter about not posting party and drinking photos, he said.
"It's dumb to have these pictures up on the Internet," he said, pointing out he has since deleted his Facebook page.
Natalie Friedman, a senior who is not part of any sports programs, said she was called in by her dean and scolded about Facebook photos of her behind a bar at a friend's house with drinks visible. She declined to say whether she was drinking, saying that no one can prove there was alcohol in the beverages.
"I didn't get into any trouble,'' she said. "But I'm only in intramural sports and some clubs." She said a friend who is captain of a girls' team was stripped of her leadership role because she was shown in party photos.
Friedman said some of the photos obtained by school officials show students holding drinks at weddings and family vacations.
After her meeting with her dean, Friedman said, "I see his perspective. They can't look at these pictures and not do anything about it.
"But it's not going to stop kids from drinking," she said. "We're just going to re-evaluate what we put out in public. We're going to be more cautious."
Eden Prairie senior Rachael Kalaidis said she wouldn't be surprised if she's called to the dean's office this week because she is probably pictured in some Facebook party photos posted on her friends' pages. At least 20 of her friends already have had to report to their deans regarding such photos.
"I don't really put bad stuff on my page,'' she said. "I'm not dumb."
Students throughout the school are talking about getting stung by the Facebook photos, but the administration has not made any public announcements about it or sent out any information, Kalaidis said.
"Everyone thinks it's pretty weird,'' she said. "I think it's a huge invasion of privacy."*
The Minnesota State High School League requires student athletes to sign a pledge that they will not drink alcoholic beverages.
Principal Conn McCartan declined to talk to a reporter who went to his home late Tuesday. Varsity boys' hockey coach Lee Smith said late Tuesday that no players on his team are involved, but declined to comment further. Eden Prairie girls' hockey coach Tim Morris, reached at home, declined to comment Tuesday.

* How so? you put pictures online for everyone to see and so there isn't any right to Privacy.

Except for the fact that they are. :whatever:

I don't understand how they are.

People get cancer; if their cancer goes away, do they still have it?

If smokers quit smoking, are they still smokers?

Alcoholics should be the same way. If they stop drinking for years, decades, the rest of their lives, should they still be considered alcoholics?

The repercussions of something like this are incredibly extreme and degrading. By saying people can be alcoholics forever, that insinuates that they never give up their addiction to alcohol. The label which comes with being an alcoholic is a permanent branding which completely contorts society's impression of a person. If someone hears the phrase "President Bush is an alcoholic," they automatically get an image in their head of an irresponsible person who drinks his weight in booze every night-- despite the fact that he's been sober for roughly two decades.

The disease may be a psychological addiction; but whoever came up with this finding should have been intelligent enough to realize the social stigmas which would long-follow recovering and recovered alcoholics. It's an easy way to label someone.

But if we have to go by what society thinks we should think of people like this, then fine. I withdraw my earlier statement, and replace it with the following:

President Bush is a recovering alcoholic. He was smart enough to get his act together after his disastrous undergraduate experiences, and went on to get an MBA-- which no other sitting President has ever received. Following that, he became a very successful and powerful businessman, before he went on to not only defeat the popular sitting governor in Texas, but later, President of the United States. People can transpire to great things after overcoming addiction and hard times; who's to say these Facebook morons won't do the same thing?

And before you can say that's an endorsement of him... just don't.

When I was in high school if you were on a sports team and caught smoking or drinking on or off school grounds, you'd be suspended from the team. Of course, this was before the days of Facebook and MySpace, so not as many got caught, but if both these were around then, I'm sure there'd be a lot more suspended athletes. Identity 'at risk' on Facebook

By Spencer Kelly
Presenter, BBC Click

Personal details of Facebook users could potentially be stolen, the BBC technology programme Click has found.

The popular social networking site allows users to add a variety of applications to their profile.
But a malicious program, masquerading as a harmless application, could potentially harvest personal data.
Facebook says users should exercise caution when adding applications. Any programs which violate their terms will be removed, the network said.

Stealing details
Facebook is the darling of the moment, allowing friends to stay in touch, post photos, and share fun little games and quizzes. And it also lets you keep your details private from the rest of the world. Or at least that is the implication.

C.F. Kane

As long as you don't post your social security number, you should be fine.

Leto Atrides

While we could not get all details, what we did get, included his name, hometown, school, interests and photograph, would certainly help us to steal someone's identity.
...
We wrote an evil data mining application called Miner, which, if we wanted, could masquerade as a game, a test, or a joke of the day. It took us less than three hours.

Is this a threat BBC?

ActuallyRobin

I feel fairly safe, i don't really sign up to many apps at all, plus the 'crucial' personal info i put on my profile is kept to a minimum, and I try to keep the privacy settings so only the people who'm I want to see it, see it.

these days you pretty much have to put your whole life history down.

name
address
full name

date of birth

some want drivers licence info, some want national security numbers. One agency asked for birth certificat and passport details as well...

What's to stop a bogus recruitment website advertising for some fantastic job and just stealing people's details left right and centre.

I'm an introverted hermit, so I have less than 10 friends I actually keep in regular contact with. I have friends on Facebook where it's like, "Gee, I haven't talked to them since graduation.." but it's still fun seeing where they are and such.

Some people like to friend everyone they've ever met, which is why my sister has 800+ Facebook friends. :oldrazz: It's just a different way of doing things. In college apparently Facebook is REALLY helpful in promoting events and parties. Instead of having to make posters and flyers, all you gotta do is make an event in Facebook and invite people through Facebook.

Facebook >>>>> MySpace, BTW. At least you can't mess with the layout colors in Facebook. People on MySpace have no taste. I've seen yellow lettering on a hot pink background. :o

I don't do the weird things like vampires and zombies and stuff. That started getting into wannabe-MySpace territory. And I also make sure I log myself off every time, since it's been starting to connect websites and I don't want people to know what I've bought off Amazon or queued on Blockbuster/Netflix, etc etc. That's just too weird.

Facebook makes you put your last name and people know what your doing ALL the time. Whenever you comment, add someone, At least of MySpace, you can set your profile private and last name secretive.

That's because it's for people you actually know. That's why it just used to be for colleges, that's what it's made for. If you're meeting new people it's friends of friends who could find out your name anyway.

Going around under assumed name with everything private ruins the point, you might as well just make a personal website then. If you want to be friends with teenage scene kids, webcam girls, and middle age wiccans that you only know from the internet that's what MySpace is for.

It is obviously better for bands though.

I hate that the apps make you spam your friends and they in turn spam you

Facebook is a 'flirt' nightmare. You can't have a girlfriend, Facebook and an harmonious relationship at the same time. Too many ex girlfriends or girls that are prettier than you're current partner sending you 'hugs', 'pokes' or throwing zombies at you. For the sake of peace of mind I had to nuke mine. No loss, don't miss it, I actually feel extremely liberated.

So let's me see if I've got this straight...

There are people who work for Facebook that used to work for other companies that had other employees that used to work for other companies that had other employees that once worked for the CIA and US Department of Defense and other information collecting firms. So when Facebook users post stuff like their favorite movies and whether they've read Catcher in the Rye, there's a chance that a series of people can give that information to their former employers.

That would be worrying if Facebook users regularly posted information like their credit card numbers, social security numbers, and crap more pertinent than their favorite bands.

Seriously. I don't post my address, credit card #, ss# or phone number and I use a email address created just for facebook.
