Two things:

1) For the uninitiated (or those like me who just forgot), what is Ms Marvel's origin in the comics? IIRC, it's a pretty complicated path to where we are now...

And more importantly
2) How would you rework the origin to work in an Avengers sequel?

She got powers from the Kree. They fluctuated a lot. One time Rogue stole them, so she hung out with the X-Men for a while. That's the important stuff.

As for how to fit her into a movie, just have her be a military officer (which she was in the comics) who gets roped into the Kree/Skrull conflict that might be the film's plot, and go from there.

She was also a supporting character of Captain Marvel. His girlfriend I believe.

What about something like Negative Man's origin in Doom Patrol?

N-Man was exposed to radiation when he flew to close to the Earth's atmosphere or something (i saw it in a flashback in the new series so it could be retcon). You could have the same for Danvers who is in the Air Force or Navy, is discharged for the event because she was sick or got hurt or something, and SHIELD scooped her up for an agent position. Than while shes hanging with the Avengers, her powers spontaneously manifest during a mission.

I just hope that Mar Vell doesn't get passed over or misrepresented if the Kree are introduced just for the sake of introducing her.

A couple ideas I've been kicking around:

I would establish Danvers as a fighter pilot, probably under the SHIELD umbrella. At some point, she has an encounter with the Kree on Earth and gets exposed to their bio-technology (kinda like District 9 but less gross). And when I say "encounter," I can't help but imagine a mid-air battle between a Kree soldier and Danvers after she's ejected from her jet. The Kree's weapon gets damaged, she gets irradiated, maybe the Kree gets stabbed and bleeds on her. Depends on how violent we can get.

Anyway, she recovers from this incident and starts exhibiting Kree superpowers, and later becomes a candidate for the Avengers as they deal with the whole Kree issue. Mar-Vell might be on Earth as some sort of covert agent who sheds some light on the situation.

As for the Kree themselves, I haven't decided why they're here, but I would not have them on Earth as an invasion force.

I don't know. Maybe she could have just eat some radioactive cake?
