View Full Version : Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt return as Cobra Comander?

He was brilliant in the role, but as his character developes he becomes masked... so essentially they could recast his role. Not that we would want it recast but potentially it could happen.

My question is Joseph Gordon-Levitt although he loved playing that role, he is a serious actor and prefers to be in things he thinks are great works like 500 days of summer. So lets say another good movie appears around the time of the sequel to GIJOE which will he do? He only considered Commander as a bit of fun.

If the sequel happens, I definately want him to return, whether he will or not i aint sure, just I aint that the sequel is happening.

He was great in the first one, and I'll be disappointed if he doesn't return. Even my brother who hates the movie with a seemingly unlimited amount of bile admits that Cobra Commander / The Doctor was good.

He made that movie, i know its not inkeeping with the story from the comics cartoons but i really hope Cobra Commander goes back to his doctor look i think Lovett hiding behind a mask is a shame but he is a good commander,

I liked his voice as The Doctor much better than his "Commander" voice, so I hope that they go back to it for the sequel. They should have him wearing his old respirator mask and then drape the Cobra Commander hood over it.

im pretty sure he will. he will probably get paid a hell of a lot more money now for any sequel, and since he like to try many different genre's, I don't think he is suddenly going to become a stuck up pompous actor like many others.

he was on 3rd rock from the sun, one of the funniest ever tv shows, so you can tell he likes to have fun when making movies.

bring him back.

I'm pretty sure that everyone from the first one had a 3 picture deal. Obviously, there are ways to get out of it if they're deadset against being in it, but I'm pretty sure that the whole cast will be back.

Didn't they alledgedly nix the Hooded mask because it looked to much like KKK?

They'll go with the helmet to avoid any controversy.

I disliked the costume and didn't see the need to Darth Vader his voice at the end but I definitely preferred his portrayal over most of the animated series and movies.

I'd be surprised if he is even proud of being part of the film. If I were him I'd take the George Clooney approach to it and apologize to anyone that paid to see it and refund their money.

IMO G. I. Joe was no where near as bad as Batman and Robin and I liked it alot more then Transformers 2 but I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't proud of it.

But based on his interviews leading up to the release, JGL genuinely sounded like he had loads of fun on the set; which wouldn't be surprising since he was allowed to ham it up so much he probably built a pig from scratch.

If he does indeed get a role in DKR, then I think its safe to say he wont be back, it'll be a damn shame if he isnt, he was easily one of the best parts of the first movie.

Depends on when filming is and if the GI Joe 2 is for summer for 2012. TDKR is from late April- December. I doubt JGL will need for filming that long since they major roles already been casted. So JGL screen time will most liekly be around 15 minutes- 20 minutes. He could do another film.

Timstuff
02-21-2011, 10:15 PM
^ Yup. Unless someone is playing the main character in a movie, schedule conflicts don't pop up that often. Neither his role in Batman 3 or GI Joe 2 will probably require him to be on set for long. And it's not like he has to go through intense physical training for either movie, especially since Cobra Commander wears a mask meaning that stunt doubles can easily do any physical work on set.

He's got a good career now and he didn't even want to do the first movie. Not to mention, making JGL the face behind CC sucked. I don't think he's a bad actor but I mean . . . he just didn't look or sound like Cobra Commander should. Charles Adler had a good grasp on how Cobra Commander should sound.

Well once they went full on Darth Vader at the end of the movie there was really no need for Levitt to return so I'm not surprised he's not coming back. So far I don't think there's been any mention of Cobra Commander or Destro returning but I hope they do.

With the way JGL's career is going, I'd feel it'd be a step back for him to do it anyways.

The Infernal
12-11-2011, 02:29 PM
Shhh! You don't want to give them any ideas Ultimate_Evil, the various He-man scripts that have been written are worse than the first G.I. Joe movie.

As for JGL, I don't see the guy even wanting to come back. I expect he just did the first one so he could get his face out there because he wasn't that famous yet. Even if G.I. Joe 2 turns things around for the movie franchise it would still feel like a step down in terms of work for him.

Plus there wasn't that much in the script in the first one that made Cobra that interesting despite their attempts at an origin. Still at least it wasn't as bad as the Baroness origin.

Whiskey Tango
01-07-2012, 12:00 AM
It's not like there's no one else on the planet who can play CC. Maybe they'll retcon the first movie and say JGL's character was an imposter.

The Infernal
01-09-2012, 12:00 PM
I don't think it really matters that JGL won't return. The first movie and its script was awful and he's not likely to look on it any better than the audience. I'm sure both sides probably would want to forget about the movie. So in a sense it doesn't really matter that someone else is CC from now on, only that the film and the role aren't as bad as the first movie.

Whiskey Tango
01-09-2012, 12:05 PM
I'd like to see a CC who adhered a little closer to the version I know and love. Less disfigured scientist crap, more working class guy who got screwed by the system.

The Infernal
01-09-2012, 12:36 PM
Well I'd be all for a soft reset on the canon. Sort of remove bits (or all of) the first movie that didn't really work without overtly showing it. That way for future sequels you could possibly revisit CC's backstory and go with another version (or have a Scarlett who's character isn't a complete idiot).

Faran Tahir is too awesome to be kept behind a mask for an entire movie. I would love to know where this supposed information came from.

Since we know CC is in the new movie but we don't know who is playing them. I checked with my sources at Paramount and I asked if they could confirm that Faran Tahir was playing Cobra Commander. They said they could not confirm the actor playing the character at the moment.

Then I asked if Faran Tahir was in the movie. And they said they could not confirm regarding that actor being in the movie.

Honestly my feeling is if he wasn't in the movie at all they would just say no he's not. So he could be in the movie but not necessarily as CC.

I don't care if he removes the mask or not. He at least looks like the Cobra Commander from the cartoons, which already makes him 100 times better than that bullsh** we got in the first film. I love Joseph Gordon Leavitt but man, did his CC suck. It wasn't really his fault though; no one could have made that character good.

figured they would recast the character. Essentially you dont need a big name actor to play a villian if the villian is wearing a mask. Essentially i reckon he could of been replaced by Doug Jones.

It's a shame really because i felt the reason the first movie was watchable is because Joseph Gordon-Levitt played an interesting take on the Cobra Commander.

He wasn't. From what the rumors and early screenings would tell us, he was played by Faran Tahir and voiced by Charlie Adler from G.I. Joe Resolute. However, neither of those were confirmed.

I didn't mind the voice too much. Though I preferred the voice in the first movie (for all two seconds of it), but both voices were so heavily modified in my opinion. I would have preferred it to have been less noticeable so we could hear more of the actor's performance.

I didn't really notice Cobra Commander in the 2nd movie. He was kinda quiet and just there. Plus the lack of personality didn't help.

The Infernal
04-15-2013, 10:12 PM
True. He could have had more to do. But on the other hand it was still tons more Cobra Commander than the previous film gave us. That was mostly just The Doctor pretending to play toady to Destro (who also wasn't really Destro until the end).
