Obi-Wan is canologically supposed to be 37 in Revenge of the Sith, and Ewan McGreggor was 34 at the time. The character is 57 in A New Hope, and Alec Guiness was 62 when they shot it. That's only a difference of 5 years, so I don't know where people get this notion that they overshot Obi-Wan's age by a significant margin.
based on how obi wan looked in rots I thought it matched up pretty well to be honest!
much better than how anakin matches up between menace and aotc

What part of the word "original" is giving you problems?
You're a smart guy, so I'm surprised I have to explain this to you, also surprised you have used the old slap head smiley, which is especially embarrassing when it's yourself that has to have the obvious pointed out to you...
When a movie is remastered what they do is remove all the dust and crap that has built up on the prints so that the film looks as it was originally intended.
The releases of the original movies do not look the way they are supposed to , they look like crap because they have not been remastered.
edit: I think you are confusing the concept of releasing original cuts, but I didn't use that phrase at all in my post.

lol, i made sure to quote the one where you posted a slap head just to make you more embarrased! :oldrazz: but yeah, I wish Lucas had just run the old vacum cleaner over the original cuts when he was remastering, Spielberg released the original ET along with the SE ET when he remastered, perhaps because he saw fan reaction to what Lucas did.
Well, at least i assume the ET cut was remastered in that box set, I can't stand what Spielberg did to ET with adding CG to the puppet's face, thank god Lucas didn't do that with Yoda, that would have ruined the SE empire for me, which I think is the only SE that genuinely improves the film.

I was lucky enough to see all of the OT in the theaters when they were originally released (I was young, but I saw them all).
Vader's line to Luke was huge, and since there was no internet at the time, it was a really cool cliffhanger that people speculated about for a couple of years (obviously until ROTJ).
Yoda's line about there being another was also a pretty cool cliffhanger.
I love spoilers, and can never resist, but there was something so cool about not really knowing the outcome of those storylines.

Do you think, or want The Clone Wars cartoon to delve into the mystery of Anakin's miraculous conception, and whether it was by the will of the force, or if Darth Plaguous had created him, as it's hinted in ROTS...?

I think the possibility of this happening is 50/50 (this is entirely 100% up to George), but I think it would be cool if they did, granted they do a good job with it. This was extremely cryptic in ROTS and I'm still hoping that one day we might get a longer and official explanation.

The originals are available...I bought a widescreen DVD boxed set of the OT and it came with the original theatrical version and the special editions
I bought the single versions of ANH and ROTJ like this before I found out that the box set had both vesions. And personaly I'm fine with them being available like this. Other than wishing they would switch the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16x9 I think it kinda cool watching them unrestored. I just would hate to see them compleatly be done away with.
On a side note can you guys tell me what figures can be used for the mail in figures? Well I guess the better question is where do I find the numbers on the figures that are listed on the orderform? I hope you guys understand what I'm asking. Nevermind I found it.

He was only 62? Huh, I always thought he looked older then that. But then maybe that's because there's actors out there like Harrison Ford who hold their age ridiculously well. I found out he was in his 40's when doing TOD and Last Crusade. :wow: I hope I look that good at 40.

Well, this is the letter I wrote:
Hello Steve Leggett,
My name is Michael Kaminski and I am writer from Toronto who specialises in cinema studies. I understand that this year 1980's Empire Strikes Back was added to the National Film Registry and I had a few simple questions I was hoping you could clarify for me about the print. Firstly, I was wodering which version of the film this print represents? As you may know, the film was re-released in 1997 in a heavily modified form. I was also wondering whether the print was donated by Fox, Lucasfilm or a third party, and whether said print was already existant or if it was newly printed for the occassion.
Thanks in advance for your reply,
Michael Kaminski
24 hours for a government reply? Wow. The US bureacracy is faster than I thought. The news is good too:
"
Michael: In reference to the question, we always recognize and seek to ensure preservation of the original theatrical release version, per the legislation (which says the Registry version is "the version of a film first published")., though we might also try to obtain other versions as well. This would apply even in cases where we might prefer a different version (i.e. where a studio butchered a director's film before release).
Tho we recognize the original, we have no problem with the filmmaker going back and releasing a modified version (that is their right after all). We would want to see all versions preserved well.
After the recent selection, we will in the near future request that Fox/Lucasfilm strike and send us a new 35mm print of the original 1980 release version. We do that for all the studio titles, and the studios do cooperate.
Best, Steve Leggett"

So despite peoples' fears to the contrary, the original release is being preserved, even if it is not necessarily availible for purchase in the highest quality. I'd chock the lazy non-anamorphic laserdisc rips currently available on DVD up to cutting costs and rushing, not some conspiracy by Lucas to somehow erase the original releases from history.

They will probably release individual episodes on Blu-Ray eventually, but I am going to go for the 6 movie set, no doubt. I have been waiting for AGES for them to come out with a comprehensive 6 movie set, and now it is finally happening. Been waiting for a "Saga" set...no price is too big for me...
...well, actually have to wait for it to come out before I say that...
...thinking about the Clone Wars...I was wondering where I saw the design for Mother Talzin before...her looks similar/based on the Nightsister design that was a pre-Darth Maul concept design for Episode I...and looks exactly like the Nightsister Miniature from the Miniatures Game...also recently...like yesterday, found an old interview kinda confirming it...I know, I'm a little slow with certain things, but just kept thinking, she looks so familiar... ...
...Thinking back, I wish the Nightsister and Asajj Ventress concept arts had in some way made it into Episode's I and II...i love Darth Maul and Count Dooku, and am not saying I would of replaced them, but it would have been cool if in Episode I the Nightsister was seen speaking with Darth's Maul and Sidious (maybe in a oracle type deal trying to see the future of Sidious plan,etc...) or in Episode II if Ventress was with Dooku and participated in the Battle of Geonosis......I'll always have my dreams, LOL

Afer SW on Blu Ray, when in the hell are we getting Indy on Blu Ray. You'd think I'd be this year too since it's the 30 year anniversary of Raiders.
You know what I want on bluray? Well other than Hook?
Jurassic Park. :cmad:
About time they officially released the episodes 2 and 3 full scores, although bootlegs do get the job done until then :o :oldrazz:
True, but I'd like to listen to "Revisiting Padme" without SFX. :oldrazz:

Look at the Alien Anthology release by Fox. That was four films and every single special feature ever released all the way back to the laserdisc plus promotional material and even spoofs and all that was $100 on release and much cheaper online. The Star Wars boxed set will probably be similarly priced. If we get the same quality the Alien Anthology got then I will gladly pay $100. And I know a lot of people don't like the first 3 but a lot of people don't like the last two alien films and fox still packaged them together because they are one story about ripley and star wars is one story about Anikan so they will prolly all be released together.

I'm sure stores like Borders and Barns and Noble will charge some ungodly price like $120, but give it a month and Amazon will have it for $60.

Lucas himself is so confident in the Singapore team that he is planning to produce his next feature film entirely in the studio.
Details are top-secret except for the fact that it will be a totally new property instead of being another Star Wars derivative.
Here's a look at the new Lucasfilm facility they are building in Singapore for a 2012-13 completion.

Multiple early leaks we're receiving from retail sources today would seem to indicate that Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox will be releasing all 6 Star Wars films on Blu-ray in October (street dates of 10/18 or 10/25 are being reported), as a Star Wars: The Complete Saga - 35th Anniversary Collection (2012 being the 35th anniversary of the theatrical release of the original film). We're told by studio sources that we WILL get an official Blu-ray announcement from Fox and Lucasfilm [today]...

Flanked by a legion of his finest Imperial stormtroopers, Darth Vader himself joined Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment President Mike Dunn at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to announce the release, vowing "The forces of the Empire will be at your disposal to assure the success of this endeavor."
"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Dunn said. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."
"With all six episodes available for the first time in one collection, this is a great way for families and home audiences to experience the complete Saga from start to finish," said Doug Yates, Vice President of Marketing, Online, Distribution, Lucasfilm Ltd. "And with the quality of high-definition, Blu-ray provides the most immersive home experience possible."
"The Star Wars franchise has been the most anticipated Blu-ray release by Amazon's customers," said Bill Carr, Vice President of Music and Video at Amazon.com. "We think that Star Wars will be incredibly popular with our customers, and we expect pre-orders to be very strong."

It could have been better & I really hope the Special Features are good. Is it wrong to expect at least any & all Deleted Scenes to be fully Completed with all Special Effects & what not ?
I'm not really worried about the lightsaber effects and other effects based on the trailer. I think that they'd just use current DVD footage or Spike HD footage for this announcement trailer. Later on with a full trailer I think they'll show fully completed shots. Though I know some said the same thing about the DVD trailer back in 2004, but I really think that the effects will be fixed for the blu ray.

Also, it's entirely possible that the footage in the trailer isn't the restored versions of the films. They could have just used the footage they had available, it's not like they had to wait for the resmasters to come in in order to edit together bits from the Star Wars movies.

Star Wars fans were treated to a glimpse of bonus material, in the form of a long-lost deleted scene from Return of the Jedi. Probably because it totally spoils the surprise of Luke's lightsabre being fired over by R2 for the escape.
and as someone on another forum pointed out to me, at that point in the story, you don't even know Luke has a lightsabre, as he lost his last one in Empire. So when he walks into Jabba's palace weaponless, and force grabs a gun, a first time SW viewer could well think he didn't have access to a lightsabre at that point.

Yep. Lucas didn't want to use actors he'd previously worked with, and Ford had been in American Graffiti. The story is that Ford was doing some carpentry work in the office where Lucas was talking about Star Wars auditions and asked him if he could come in to read with the actors that were auditioning. Ford said yes, but he was really annoyed to be at the auditions when he wouldn't be able to audition himself...and it wound up helping him get the part.

I'm guessing the 2004 versions will not be included - but neither will the '77, '80, and '83 versions. I mean, come on, we all know how this is gonna go down; Lucas is a "perfectionist" when it comes to Star Wars, he'll never be completely satisfied, he'll probably always be tweaking them, and that'll almost certainly continue with the Blu-ray release. And then in a few years we may have a Blu-ray release of the '77, '80, and '83 versions.

I agree with him for pretty much everything, I do enjoy some aspects of it, but I agree with his ending statement of it just being really cold and sterile, and no connection to the characters were really attempted. They had great action and some amazing looking areas, but sadly to me that was it.

There are movies I like that I know are not really good movies, that parts just don't work for whatever reason. That's also true the other way around, with movies I don't particularly enjoy but recognize that they are well crafted.

Yep. Lucas didn't want to use actors he'd previously worked with, and Ford had been in American Graffiti. The story is that Ford was doing some carpentry work in the office where Lucas was talking about Star Wars auditions and asked him if he could come in to read with the actors that were auditioning. Ford said yes, but he was really annoyed to be at the auditions when he wouldn't be able to audition himself...and it wound up helping him get the part.
it's destiny. I can't imagine anyone playing han, or indy or deckard.
ford stars in 3 of my top 10 movies of all time.

I doubt that the source footage for the Star Wars Holiday special has survived the ravages of time. It was never re-distributed officially, and I doubt that any effort has been made to preserve it. Even if high quality footage was still available, I highly doubt Lucas would include it since it is one of the few pieces of Star Wars marketing that he has openly expressed shame over. It still exists in the bowels of the internet and buried in fans' video cassette collections, and personally I like it that way.
I think it's great that there are some things about Star Wars that are still somewhat illusive, because that's part of the mystique of the franchise. Most people don't even know that the holiday special exists, which makes it one of those things that real Star Wars fans are "in" on. When I find out one of my friends likes Star Wars and has never heard of the special, I get an evil grin on my face, and when Christmas rolls around I make them watch it. "You don't love Star Wars, unless you've seen the holiday special and still love Star Wars" I'd tell the. I almost miss the days before the widespread use of the internet, because back then the special was even rarer, and I was the only person I knew who actually had a tape of it.
If the special ever got an official release, I think that it would kill much of what makes it so infamous. It has already been as well preserved and archived as Lucas ever could even if he wanted to, and I think it should remain what it is-- a thing of myth, a rite of passage within the Star Wars fandom to be shared and propagated across the internet and at conventions. No matter which part of the Star Wars fandom you part of, whether you are someone who loves all the movies, a purist who hates everything except the original 1977 Star Wars film, or you're George Lucas himself, our universal hatred of the Star Wars Holiday Special unites us.

the quality was a disgrace. I started watching star wars and the quality was so bad I said 'frigg this' and went to the special editions and bit my lip through the horrible CGI. the part that made me eject my dvd and switch over is on the millelium falcon gun shoot out in space and you can see the tie fighters THROUGH the metal of the MF. this of course is matted perfectly in the SE.
there are about 4 scenes that make me cringe in the SE, I can live with that.

For as much hate as the SE's get, the special effects in the originals don't hold up as well as some people would like to claim. Poor matting is easily the worst amongst the OOT's trilogy's shortcomings. That doesn't mean Lucas gets a free pass on Greedo shooting first or the retroactive re-casting of Boba Fett and Anakin Skywalker, but if you want the "pure" Star Wars experience you have to accept that looking good is not necessarily on the agenda, even if it weren't for the horrible laser disc rips that Lucas used in liu of new anamorphic transfers.
But hey, if you really need the OOT versions of the trilogy in better picture quality, at least the fandom has stepped in to fill the void. Guys like Adywan and others have made some pretty impressive efforts to digitally restore anamorphic transfers of the original prints to a more acceptable quality than the crappy official laserdisc rips. If only George would give us an updated version with restored mattes, updated CGI, and color correction but unadulterated by "added" CGI. I mean how hard is that. Just give us an updated copy of the theatrical along with the Elder Lucas 04' editions.
Seeing as it won't happen with this massive Blu Ray release, I've lost almost all hope in ever seeing this released officially from Lucas. Oh well.

Before the 2004 versions came out, they claimed they were the 1997 SE editions, so I'm still not 100% convinced there won't be some color corrections and maybe a Yoda replacement in TPM.
The only film in the series that needs a major reedit is AOTC, and it needs a TON of work. The new fan cuts made from this set will be cool to see.

Maybe I'm beating a dead horse but I'm having a hard time seeing as to why Lucas has made it so difficult to just simply do minor updates on the OT (color, matte, and CGI restoration not addition) and releasing that copy alongside the Elder Lucas 97/04 version.
I mean shouldn't it be a breeze. Either this is a way of Lucas subconsciously trying to stick it to the "man" who he felt restricted him back in the day, whereas now he can basically do anything he damn well pleases with his movies or he just doesn't really like the OT without ILM's forced CGI tinkering (which is ordered by him).

When I was at the Star Wars Celebration in Denver before the release of TPM, Anthony Daniels was the emcee and he was taking questions from the audience. One person asked if the Holiday Special would ever be released...so he asked for a show of hands of how many people had written Lucasfilm asking for an official release of the Holiday Special.
A good number of people raised their hands, and Daniels responded "And have you all gotten death threats from their legal department?" :funny:
So no, they're never going to release it. And that's probably a good thing.

Great Clone Wars episode.
Dooku finally got his moment. He ****ing owned all three of them blind!
And the Nightsisters are a great aspect of the SW universe. Are they new? Because i do remember the head Nightsister as a concept art piece for ROTS. I think it was for Grevious.
I think the head nightsister was concept for Darth Maul, but maybe I'm wrong...

Just picked this up for pretty cheap. It's good to satisfy my inner geek occasionally.
Who else thinks that we didn't need an entire prequel trilogy to tell the story of Vader's downfall, perhaps just one film?
If you watch ROTS without ever seeing TPM or AOTC, you will be just as informed as you were if you had. We only needed to see Vader's temptation and the duel to get the point across.

I always thought that there should of been one movie from the start. Here's what I wanted to see, before the prequels came out. People cloning themselves to fight on the battle field, as why it's called The Clone Wars. Actually I think the whole clones leading up to becoming stormtroopers is a lot better in the final films. I wanted Obi-Wan to meet Anakin on the battle field. Obi-Wan saw Anakin kicking some major butt, displaying force chokes and using the force grabs taking enemies weapons. He was in his mid or late 20's with black or brown hair and he was a captain. As time went on Obi-Wan and Anakin were kicking butt side by side on the battle filed and eventually became good friends. Obi-Wan then brought Anakin to Yoda because he saw how strong he was in the force. Yoda saw that Anakin was to dark, but Obi-Wan taught him despite his master forbidding him. Obi-Wan fell in love with Anakin's woman and they had an affair and Anakin caught them together. Anakin went crazy with jealousy, and went ballistic. Anakin went to the Dark Side and Anakin had to take him down because he was a Sith. Leia fled to Alderaan and raised Leia and dying a few years later. Obi-Wan watched over Luke out of guilt for ruining all their lives. In my version of the prequels I never had the Emperor in there, because I never liked the Emperor. So Anakin being seduced was never part of what I wanted in the films. In a sense having Palpatine seduce Anakin is in perfect line with original films because Obi-Wan said Vader was seduced by the dark side of the force, as someone seduced him.

I feel exactly that way!
After watching episode 4, 5, 6, you can just go to episode 3 and you are fine!

Thats what I have done several times lol. I only have ROTS on DVD since I no longer own EP1 and EP2. Watching just ROTS and the OT, its like a 4 part story rather than a six part story but then again, there are some things that happen in EP1 and EP2 that you may want to keep in mind. For me, its the important scenes when Anakin takes his first step towards the dark side as he slaughters the Tusken Raiders in revenge because of the loss of his mother.

I think we need the other two. Anakin's recklessness and past wit his anger and emotions come from the first two films and that all comes back to bite him in the ass in the third.

I've always wondered what Palpatine/Sidious hoped to achieved by having Grevious kidnap him at the beginning of EPIII (i assume it was Sidious' plan, as Dooku orchestrated it); and, if Grevious knew that Sidious was Palpatine...?

I think it was a way for Anakin to kill Dooku and for him to get an encounter with Palpatine of doing something crucial. So Anakin would listen to Palpatine more. They already had a solid relationship, but if Anakin went after him and rescued him, they would get closer I think.

I'm wondering... what entitles you to become a Jedi? Why can't Han Solo become a Jedi but Leia can? /He asks sincerely.

Well you have to be force sensitive. This starts at a very young age and then you are sent to the academy when you're 4 or so to start training.
Everybody isn't force sensitive.

To get Anakin to kill Dooku and give into his anger.

It probably also helped to get the senators in Coruscant more panicky about the war, making the transition from republic to empire easier.

Back in like '99 this guy I was stationed w/ in Germany told me that Obi-Wan slept w/ Padme and that's why Anakin went nutso. It's actually a pretty interesting theory and better IMO than what we got. He also said that some crystal that Palpatine made him find caused him to have "Dark" feelings or something too. lol, I'm glad I never got caught up in the extended universe throughout the years.

in one of the young boba fett novels dooku offers to train him in the ways of the force, this took place shortly after the end of episode 2
he turned down the offer, but whether it were possible or not is unknown, i think dooku was trying to play on boba's anger/hate over the loss of jango

The whole Padme cheating on Anakin is what a lot of people wanted. When George was showing the final film to to employees at Lucasfilm, someone spoke out during the movie angrily at the fact that there was Obi-Wan Padme betrayal. George got on the phone with Spielberg about second guessing the film, and Spielberg gave George his support that he should stay true to his original treatment he created 20 years prior. It's all in the Making of Revenge of the Sith book. I like the whole betrayal aspect, it reminds me of the Lancelot and Guinevere betrayal in the Arthurian Legend.
It's called the Kaiburr crystal!

Agreed. That's not the first time I've heard a proposition for an Anakin / Padme / Obi-Wan triangle, and I've always hated it. It greatly cheapens Anakin's descent to the dark side and his lust for power, because he would have been betrayed by Obi-Wan outright rather than being the traitor himself. Also, it would give Luke reason to have serious beef with Obi-Wan, as well. How would you feel if you found out that a man you'd once respected not only lied about where your father was, but also had an affair with your mother? I'd be pretty darned pissed, even as a viewer, and frankly I'm glad Lucas did not sully the character's reputation by showing him as a carnal and covetous man.
