I just saw an interview on 'Rachel Maddow' about how the anti-prop 8 movement didn't do enough in the Black and Latin communities to get the message out......it's a good point...and Spideyboy, you're right...your side has to stop hoping that people will eventually come around and get out there and make your case

your avatar makes me sad.

i remember back when i was in high school (15+ years ago) when one of my best friends was worried about coming out to his mother i thought "change is happening. i see it in the media and culture. in ten years we will have come a long way as a society".

and while i will concede that there has been change, it saddens me to see that we have not come nearly far enough. as a straight white male i see gay rights as the civil rights issue of the 21st century and it makes my blood boil that california voted to restrict or eliminate rights of its people in the year 2008.

I was thinking along those lines on election night when Obama was elected and the adulation (and deservedly so) from all people that a black man had finally been chosen as president, and I was thinking that it's the 21st century, and it should be a shame that this is a great and wondrous thing.

We've spent too long referring to each other as a demographic or defining each other according to a lifestyle. It's wishful thinking, but how great would it be if we were all just human beings and that's where the descriptives ended?

I find it so absurd that we even need a gay rights thread. Who gives a **** who someone loves or has sex with? It is between the two, consensual partners. The fact that they get different rights than everyone else is ashame. Even our president and vice-president elect, who are supposedly two of the most progressive men in Congress do not support giving them the right to have their marriages recognized by the government? It is very sad.

Not only do I think that gays shouldn't have rights, I think no one but me should have any rights. And my rights should include the right to kill everyone I want to. But I guess if other people have to have rights, then the gays should get them too.

Also, hot lesbians should totally have the right to screw in public.

Hey everyone. Let's just ban marriage altogether because civil unions are just the same.

there not the same, we don't get the exact same rights in a civil union, were not "allowed" to use the term husband and wife, and it is NOT the same thing.

it's very disgusting. I just hope whats happening in LA this week spreads like wild fire across the nation. I'm so angry that ive met sooo many fellow gays who don't feel the need to fight. And there excuses are very petty "I'm just gonna wait for the courts", "protesting just isn't me" "it can be dangerous, and im not really ready to get hurt or give my life for the cause" if find that incredibly saddening. If you want your rights, you have to fight for them, you can't wait for them to be handed to you especially with the ways things are turning as of late.

I find this article particularly disturbing
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081107/ap_on_el_st_lo/gay_marriage;_ylt=Aqw1VaCKDrSj5ngKJDrJunpvzwcF
essentially the mormon church and fellow conservatives, want to push there tactics (lies and hate) cross country.

We need to go out and show the nation that we demand rights, we can't expect them to be handed to us, we've been fighting for our rights almost as long (if not longer) then african americans have... our problem is we've never stood united. Women and Blacks didn't get there rights by sitting at home and accepting the oppression.

there not the same, we don't get the exact same rights in a civil union, were not "allowed" to use the term husband and wife, and it is NOT the same thing.

Now, I may be just plain ignorant, but other than the terms being used, what's the big difference between "marriage" and "civil unions"?

We have less rights, and i believe we arn't recognized in a hospital as family if our loved one is dying. but here is an article that should fully explain it, if you have anymore questions i could find more info... http://lesbianlife.about.com/cs/wedding/a/unionvmarriage.htm

I'm going to go to one of these rallies and turn the firehoses on people. Not because I have anything against gays, just so it will accurately re-create the black civil rights movement. You know, authenticity is important.

hey V might of spit on the book, but i felt it was still a very empowering movie

It also empowered a bunch of imbeciles to parade around in broad daylight dressed in tacky Halloween costumes to protest a religious movement which has zero credibility in this society...

That movie was an insult to the comic anyways, which was suppose to be about anarchy, but leave it to the Wakowski's not to get Alan Moore.

Honestly, the movie digests easier than Moore's pretentious, sometimes English Soap-Opera style comic book storytelling. A cop tripping on acid to find out information on V? Yeah... I read V for the first time in the mid-90's, and was pretty bored by it. So much, that when the W Bro's said they were making it, I was turned off till I seen the first trailer.

On topic, I have to admit, all this talk about dismissing Gay's Civil Rights through this election is coming off as complaining about the coffee grinds in your cup of Coffee. I mean, it's not like this was the first time it was on numerous state ballets. And where the majority was more interested in electing Obama than seeing Gay's make a progressive step forward, I think people need to calmly understand the subject of sexual orientation is something that even transcends race. I was greatly disappointed that it didn't win here in Florida, and places like California, but I also know that as soon as Courts decide with the constitution, it will be wiped off. It took 200 YEARS, for someone of a different race to Win the Presidency, and it frustrated and kinda angers me now that so many people are poo-pooing the Obama election because gays didn't win too.

Expect New York to legalize either gay marriage or (sigh) civil unions within the next six months now that the Democratic Party controls both the state assembly and state senate. Paterson said he will sign a bill legalizing gay marriage or (sigh) civil unions as long as it hit his desk.

Also, Jon Corzine previously stated that he wants New Jersey to legalize gay marriage after the elections, so that could happen early next year.

Finally, for all you Californians looking to stay on the west coast... Christine Gregoire is in the same boat as Corzine, so Washington state may legalize gay marriage or (sigh) civil unions sometime soon...

I think the bigger issue is there are A LOT of people that simply do not care about this issue....so they don't care what happens either wayAlso it seems to me Homosexuals have yet to really coalesce in their shared experience. Black people are born to black parent(s) and generally raised in communities where they interact with many others 'like them', for gay people this may be the complete opposition. Their parents and family are more likely than not going to be straight, maybe not all, but the majority. They don't necessarily have a shared experience with all other gay people, and they aren't necessarily going to be able to draw parrallels between themselves and other minorities in their community. Also is there really a gay Martin Luther King, a series of prominent gay civil rights educators, lawyers and leaders? I have a feeling there are a lot less of them than their are for certain religions or races. Also a lot of gay people are closeted, and you can't really pick them out of a crowd. It's easy to see the people affected by Illegal Immigration Policy, or Black rights policy. I think people could care, I just feel like the gay marriage issue isn't as visible as it could be and therefore people are kind of, like you say, blase' about it. I'd be even more interested to see the stats of who abstained from voting on prop 8s.

Well, I know atheists, agnostics and people who hate religion who think gays are disgusting, or lame/faries. People are capable of developing ignorance and prejudice all on their their own!

The way I see it, the people who are against gay marriage who aren't just bigots, are against it just because they want to keep the standard of a man and a woman as the basic parental concept, "as nature intended it", they believe that theres nothing wrong with being gay but that it is a genetic mutation and is *not normal* and shouldn't be considered normal, even if they believe gays should be treated equally and justfully in every other right.. But I'm like no way. Nature also intended atrocities like Katrina taht support racism and other things in nature are also very wrong.

So i just got back from 2 long protests. the first was the biggest, it was in silverlake and unfortunately too tame. the official estimated count was 12 thousand! several celebs walked hand in hand with us, the only 2 i know as of yet walked litterally at arms length beside me at one point (James Franco, and Zachary Quinto!!!!!) it was soo friggin awesome!. The protest was a lame circle in Silverlake. It started at sunset junction (sunset and santa monica) heading west on santa monica, north on one street, that brought us right between the childrens hospital (which was actually an amazing experience, the kids came to the windows and many waved :), we yelled out "get well soon" to them. And then we tried to head west on sunset, but the cops wouldn't have it. we sat on the street and protested for about 15-20 min and decided just to head back east on sunset, which pretty much killed the vibe. we ended up back where we started and it ended with sort of a fund raising event. Most of the people were there for the first time and expected what we did on thursday, so it was a bit of a let down.

Word got out later though and we met back up at 10 at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland right in front of the Kodak theater complex. 2 other groups an hr or so later joined with us coming up north from sunset and east on hollywood. we were back with probably about a thousand. we marched down highland, onto sunset, and took sunset by storm. The marched was a pretty late at night one (it lasted 11pm-2am) walking the full path on sunset and making a left on san vicente ending us at the heart of the LA gay community. Weho (West Hollywood) on sunset we hit a few *******s who we just yelled "shame on you" back at. but there was still alot of support for so late at night.

Over all i'd say it was a pretty successful night, and it was great seeing celebs take action too. We need our voices heard.

The nature stuff doesn't make sense to me either because there are almost no animals in nature practice "marriage." Some take on long-term mates, but there is lots of cheating involved too. Mostly, the males just mate and run, including our closest relatives, the primates. Well, the religiously fervent don't believe in that either so...what was their argument again? :oldrazz:

And Jon Stewart made a joke last week about real "traditional" marriage involving dowries, payments to a lord and allowing him to take away your bride on the wedding night for "jus primae noctis." :lmao:

IMO it's just culture. People are disgusted by things that seem "not normal" but what is "normal" anyway?

Amen. "Normal" is a completely subjective term that means something different to every person. People say homosexuality isn't normal or natural, well it is to me.

To me, personally, heterosexuality would be unnatural.

This is all true, but I still maintain it's all based on religious intolerance. This has been going on a long time, pretty much for many hundreds of years. By now it's been ingrained in to society, to the point where even the non-religious believe it. Be sure though, it was all started and has been maintained primarily by religion.

Where did your notion of tolerance, peace and love come from, I wonder?

It is interesting to point that all the bad things in the world seem to come from religion, but none of the good things. I am a Christian and my religion doesn't say anything about hating or persecuting anyone. In fact, Jesus went out of his way to connect with people who were considered "sinners."

The problem isn't religion. The problem is people. Take away religion, then any notion of morality is gone. Morality becomes whatever you want it to be.

Geoffrey, a student at UCLA and regular Rod 2.0 reader, joined the massive protest outside the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Westwood. Geoffrey was called the n-word at least twice.

It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU N***ER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a F****T, I will call you a n***er. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple...me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the n*ggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.

Well, this is true, a lot of good thing's come from religion, but admit it, a lot of bad things as well, ( the Crusades is just one example) and you're right, it is the people who practice religion do the bad. Doesn't make it right, and those who practice religion have a duty to at least try to keep the negatives out. One problem is that many religions require faith in the "absloute truth" as they see it, and any who question it are ostracised. You're a religious person and you want to keep it free from claims of intolerance? Then do something about it (not meaning you specifically). Don't just follow it blindly, as too many people do.

I don't think religion is there for anything but a need for comfort and faith. My family has never been religious. I've only walked into a church for choir concerts and a synagogue for my cousin's bar mitzvah, and I consider myself a pretty nice, moral person. I think there should be only one rule for morality - be considerate of other people. That's all.

I know religious people who are bigoted beyond belief and religious people who are the nicest, open-minded people. It's what you bring to the table, not what it gives you.

Religion is created by people. Morality is defined by religion, so morality is technically whatever we want it to be.

I am also a Christian or was or whatever. Not even sure anymore, but I know there are things in the bible that I completely disagree with. "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them" Leviticus 20:13. Thats a bible verse!

Plus on the subject of gay marriage, how can you say religion isnt a factor. "God hates f*gs" protestor signs all over the damn place. People calling them godless and sinners. Stupid ass televangelists spreading fear-mongering on tv all the time. Doesnt sound like tolerance, peace and love to me! Religion may encourage tolerance, peace, and love only as long as you follow their beliefs it seems.

Your religion has influenced you to legislate the lives of those who do not share your religious beliefs. And as a result, Christian fundamentalists have now denied civil rights to several million Americans in four states this past week, and have thrown the marital status of roughly 18,000 individuals in limbo. So while you can come here and claim that your religion doesn't teach you to hate anyone or act in a discriminatory matter, the propositions which passed in California, Arizona, Florida and Arkansas this past week have blatantly discriminated against a large number of Americans and, as a result, have thrown their lives in turmoil.

And why is this? Because religion has taught so many Americans that they have the right to assassinate the character and integrity of so many people simply because they do not live the lifestyle they themselves approve of. We can thank the Mormon church especially for this bigotry.

True Christians, and true Americans, would not want to harm the lives of their fellow men and women. Unfortunately, there was nothing Christian or American in the events which unfolded this past week in those four states. As a result, I am ashamed that on the same day we put so many civil rights issues behind us by electing the first African American president, we shredded many more civil rights by banning gay marriage and adoption in those states.

I think there is a fear that if you have to justify your case you 'weaken' it because it's supposed to be self-evident.

Marriage is a contract where two people become one person in a number of legal meanings of the law. It grants each spouse joint rights over property and offsrping.

That's basically it. Everything else is just a religious blessing ceremony. Except that, over time the church took the position that their blessing was the authorization of a wedding. In short, they took the position that they had to power to decide who could or could not marry.

Sometimes looking at how straight society views gays, even as a primarily straight individual (lets just say if I'm on xtube jerking for a long period of time and accidentally click on vid where there doesn't happen to be any girls involved, I don't *immidiately* lose my boner, if you know what I'm saying) it's more like mainstream America is less "heterosexual" and more "haterosexual".

It's really a city at odds with itself. You'd have to live here to understand. I blame it on the corrupt liberal city council. The backlash has effected most liberal minded groups.

And yet they still have most of the power with Conservatives at the top in a few places. It's a really strange setup.

I've even seen this negative attitude towards gays in what may seem entirely innocent at first, right here on the Hype itself, when someone wants to criticise soemthing they don't like , they say it's gay. Like, "That Fantastic Four movie was really gay.", "That 'The Batman' cartoon is gay", things like that. Really bugs me. This kind of bigotry seems entrenched in this modern world, yet a lot of people don't belive it's discrimination, or don't care.

Well gay is the fad word for lame now. I don't think many people think of it as straight up homosexual but rather just something to call something lame. However it does affect how others think because with that kind of attitude it subconsciously associates gay with a negative.

Yeah.

I remember after Brokeback Mountain came out, the term became Brokeback. So....gay wasn't even used anymore. They just added Brokeback to everything and the effect was still the same.

I honestly can't believe there was a vote needed for this. I mean....am I wrong for assuming that the American people did not vote to allow women to vote? Or to allow Black people to vote? Or to allow Interracial marriages? Or a billion other things people take for granted?

I dunno...I say it'd be fair for Gays to pay half of taxes if that's the deal the U.S. government wants to make. Seems fair...they pay less taxes since clearly...they're seens as less than an American citizen.

Course...if that was the deal on the table, we all know it's be green lit immediately...

I've never seen it, actually.

Not because it's about Gay Cowboys.

Just never had the chance to see it. Never even caught it on cable.

I just heard it was a basic story of forbidden love. With, of course, the biggest deal being that it's between two men instead. I did, and still do, continue to hear great things about Heath's perfromance.

heres a good article from another insiders POV about last night

I arrived at the rally shortly before 9PM when the protest march was coming to an end. Apparently they had made a permitted loop around the neighborhood. A truck full of people from ANSWER LA parked in the middle of the street and started to play dance music. For a minute the atmosphere seemed more like a Pride Festival than a Protest. An anonymous shout from the crowd proclaimed that same thing causing the music to stop and the protest shouts to start up again. For about 10 minutes people wandered around not sure what to do with themselves until word about a march on Hollywood & Highland started to fill the air. We were going to march from Silver Lake to Hollywood! Thousands gathered. The police tried to drive thru the crowd and disperse us but the crowd would NOT let them pass. Several minutes passed with protesters stopping the cops. Then to my surprise the cops finally backed down and drove away. The march began again down Sunset Blvd. until the cops stopped us before reaching Fountain. We insisted on moving forward. We were not going anywhere! Finally a police officer in charge shouted to the crowd that he would let us march some more but that we needed to give him time to prepare the streets. The crowd wasn’t happy about having to wait but at least the cops were working with us rather than attacking us. Finally the crowd moved on down Sunset Blvd. through traffic and cheering people in their cars. Those annoyed or offended stayed in their cars with the windows up, staring forward with concentrated blinders on. We marched on until hitting Vermont Ave. where Riot Gear Officers were strategically placed to trap us and stop us from moving any further. I guess I suspected they were doing this. How could I possibly assume they were actually going to work with us? Twenty minutes pass in a standoff between protesters and the police. The crowd starts to trickle away. Finally an officer gets on his blow horn and says again that he needs more time to get the streets clear before we continue. The crowd cheers! But twenty more minutes pass and nothing is happening. The crowd has shrunk to a couple hundred people. Maybe that’s what the police intended to happen. It’s doubtful that they would let take over Hollywood on Saturday night! We had already backed-up traffic for miles in Silver Lake and Echo Park. Then more and more Riot Police started to show up and my heartbeat started to race. What was going to happen next?! Nothing.
Finally even I grew tired and went home. It seemed they never intended to let us march to Hollywood & Highland. But then again I haven’t heard yet what happened after I left.

Some signs I saw that I liked and slightly disturbed me:

You have 2 wives. Why can’t I have 1?

7 out of 10 African-Americans &
½ of Latino’s voted YES on PROP 8! WHY?!!!
I supported your civil rights!

**** the Mormon Church!

Jesus would protest with us!

I want what the chickens got!

I want what the chickens got!

heres a good article from another insiders POV about last night

Oy when it comes to sucking at life, everyone is pretty good at it, gay straight black white brown yellow

Sorry, if this is true, then they were not "joining" the protest. there are SOOO many people of all different races at the rally and we've been VERY peaceful, no way would that of happened unless they were against us.

Some of those signs sounds like truth to me.

The problem, is ultimately the Bible. Because people ultimately take the good book to be the be all, end all for everyone...even if they're not "in" the religion.

It shouldn't be up to vote, though.

I think there is a fear that if you have to justify your case you 'weaken' it because it's supposed to be self-evident.

Marriage is a contract where two people become one person in a number of legal meanings of the law. It grants each spouse joint rights over property and offspring.

That's basically it. Everything else is just a religious blessing ceremony. Except that, over time the church took the position that their blessing was the authorization of a wedding. In short, they took the position that they had to power to decide who could or could not marry.

the thing is, before Christianity and the church, there were still weddings. so the notion that it started that way is completely false.
