Not feeling the art. But then again I haven't been feeling the Thor art since Olivier Coipel left.

Coipel's art was really phenomenal. I don't think Ferry's art is the right style for Thor, personally. He's one of those artists who tends not to stick around for too long, though, so maybe he'll leave after a couple arcs and someone more suited to Thor will come along. Or maybe Doug Braithwaite will fill in for a while again. I love Braithwaite's art (although, admittedly, he could use a good inker for a bit of contrast instead of having the colorist work directly on his very light, sketchy pencils).

With a film you may have seen mentioned one or two places on the Internet coming out next year, it’s no surprise that Marvel Comics is bringing out the big guns....or swords...hammer(?)...or the Mighty Thor. Classic stories are back in print, A-list writer Matt Fraction is taking over the main title, and a slew of one-shots and miniseries by some of the best talents in comics are hitting stands as we speak.

But one Thor comic promises to be more...metal than the rest.

Thor: For Asgard teams Robert Rodi, writer of the acclaimed Loki miniseries a few years back, with artist Simone Bianchi, known for his work on such Marvel books as Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men and Seven Soldiers: Shining Knight at DC. In this tale, Thor has it bad – his friend Balder the Brave is dead, Odin is missing, and even Thor’s hammer is gone! How is he going to put Asgard back together?

From the look of these pages – with an iron fist. Not to be confused with the actual Iron Fist.

Simone Bianchi contacted us with some exclusive black-and-white pages, along with a look at what the series will be like in color. A big-time Thor fan, Bianchi shared his enthusiasm for getting to redesign Thor and the Asgardians for a miniseries that promises action straight out of a Frank Frazetta album cover.

Newsarama: Simone, tell us what we can expect from Thor: For Asgard.
Simone Bianchi: Hopefully some great art; without any doubt a great script by one of the best writers I have ever worked with; a lot of unexpected interactions between the usual Thor characters; amazing dialogue; a trouble-twisted Thor, as we have never seen him before; an Asgard which is something between the great Spanish architect Antonio Gaudě and a more traditional fantasy Lord of the Rings might look like; some slight variations in the costumes, especially Thor, which again will look like something halfway between a Barbarian and a character from Lord of the Rings.

Sorry, what you cannot expect is to see him with his traditional hammer in his hand.

NRAMA: What attracted you to this project?

Bianchi: The possibility to re-create all Asgard settings and environments, costumes and more – in general, the design from this world from scratch and the character himself, which I’ve always loved since I started reading comics.

NRAMA: When you did new designs for the characters, what did you feel worked best about their classic appearances, and what did you want to update/change?

Bianchi: I’ve always liked the classic Thor costumes from the old days. I slightly changed his cape because I agreed with Robert we wanted to give a more classic barbarian look, so we add some fur.

I also distributed differently the four circles on his torso and added two skulls, one on his belt and one on the front of his helmet. I’ve always thought skull decorations match perfectly with the fantasy genre.

As for the Warriors Three, I just used a classic costume, the same way Olivier did in his ongoing series. Loki appears only in a couple of pages, but I redesigned his look a lot.

NRAMA: What's the biggest challenge in approaching characters such as Thor and the Asgardians?

Bianchi: The biggest one is try to give them and epic look, after all they’re all almost gods but at the same time try to give them a body and gestures that are still believable, like the way they walk or sitting on a throne, other than a chair, or just talking one to another.

NRAMA: What are some of your favorite Thor stories or moments, be they from the comics or the original Norse mythology?

Bianchi: Loki by a certain Robert Rodi and an amazing painter as Ribic, then of course Straczynski and Olivier Coipel’s re-launch of the character a couple of years ago; from a visual point of view, especially what J.R. junior did in 1998 and of course the John Buscema classic run on the character.

NRAMA: Which other Thor writers, past and present, would you like to do a Thor story with and why?

Bianchi: I absolutely loved what Straczynski did on the ongoing series with Olivier and the classic Walter Simonson run from the ’80s.

Not-Marvel writers, it would be interesting to see what Grant Morrison would be able to give us, Frank Miller. I am sure Matt (Fraction) will do an amazing job on the character.

NRAMA: What's your collaboration with Robert Rodi been like? You indicate you were familiar with his Loki miniseries...

Bianchi: As I said, yes, absolutely, and I loved it. It has been a very open collaboration, in which we have given each other input and ideas back and forth. He is obsessed with the Palio of Siena, so he comes to Tuscany every three or four months and he always would come to Lucca to see the new pages in person and talk about the story.

I couldn’t be any happier about this writer, especially considering some late trouble experiences I had.

NRAMA: So how far ahead are you on this book in terms of keeping on schedule?

Bianchi: I have 15 pages left on issue #6 and then I’m done. It has taken me 11 months to get to this point, though as usual I have produced a good amount of covers on the side – Siege, Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine Origins, Frankencastle, Cable and Deadpool, so I must say I’ve been quite busy.

NRAMA: Tell us about how you approached some of the redesigns of the characters.

Bianchi: Robert gave me some ideas and then I tried to re-elaborate the classical costumes with a personal vision of mine. Other than this, I did not follow any rules or criteria, just going as free as I could.

Speaking of which, I’d like to say some unpronounceable things to all those guys who had something to say about my X-Men redesign, which by the way Marvel still uses on all X-Men books, but then you would ban this out of the interview for sure.

NRAMA: How have you adjusted or updated your artistic style for this? My favorite description of your art for this was "pure metal."

Bianchi: It’s the best compliment I could ever get, since I’m a huge heavy metal fan, either you want to interpret it as the music genre or the magazine from the ’80 and ’90. From this point of view, maybe listening so much to bands like Metallica, Dream Theatre, AC/DC, Linkin Park, Iron Maiden, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine or Pantera – just to name a few - might have helped a little bit.

I haven’t consciously thought on how to change my artistic style, even if I tried to alternate the usual ink-wash with a more classical black and white drawing and line-drawing because I thought it would have helped the flow of the storytelling and soften the pages a little bit.

Also, we used a complete different color palette with my colorist Simone Peruzzi (who I think did absolutely his best work ever by far). We spent a very good deal of time working side by side on these pages, as much as we had never done before on any other project.

NRAMA: What are some other Marvel characters you would like to work on in the future?

Bianchi: It would be quicker to mention the few I wouldn’t like to work on – I would like to cover them all, since I’ve grown up with these characters and I feel affection to each and anyone of them.

If I had to pick up some, I would say the Fantastic Four, Inhumans, Daredevil, of course Spider-Man, and I would particularly like to draw a story with a lot of villains...just to name a few: Loki, Doctor Doom, Kingpin, Sabretooth (if he ever comes back), Magneto, Red Skull, Green Goblin, Mysterio and all those amazing Spider-Man villains, throughout all his history.

NRAMA: What have you learned from your experience of working at Marvel, and drawing the Marvel characters?

Bianchi: I think that the effect that working at Marvel that stroke me the most was how hard you have to work to make these characters look great, especially when it come down to groups and teams.

Another thing that I have realized when working if different books and different characters is that it at least takes two or three issues to get completely comfortable drawing a certain character. I’ve seen it with Wolverine, first, X-Men – maybe the most – and of course Thor himself.

That’s why I’d love sooner or later to stay on a book for 12 issues, other than six, and see how that character would look like at the end of such a long run. My only concern is that because I always feel the urge to change, to get new challenges, I could maybe lose some of my enthusiasm in the last issues.

NRAMA: Do you have any new projects outside comics at this time?

Bianchi: To be honest, I really have no time left! I am missing my fine art paintings and exhibitions, but hopefully sooner or later I’ll get back to that too.

NRAMA: What's next for you?

Bianchi: A project involving one of the characters I mentioned before – but of course I am not allowed to reveal anything.

NRAMA: One thing that's always bugged me: How does Thor's helmet stay on his head when he's flying around?

Bianchi: This is something that really didn’t concern me at all during this run, as you’ll never see him flying. My theory is that when he flies, the helmet itself flies, but really close to his head, maybe exploiting his little wings. [laughs]

NRAMA: Anything else you would like to talk about that we haven't discussed yet?

That I’ve got a still quite new website with a message board, to exchange opinions on the work, www.simonebianchi.com, and I invite everybody to stop by, plus I’ve got a fan page on Facebook that we update with everything new... so I’m working hard to be in touch with the readers, and I hope we’ll succeed in this. That’s it.

That's gotta be either Kevin or someone new. Definitely looks like a younger person. I'm excited. Eric was very much in Thor's shadow in spite of how good his series was, but Alex is different enough that he could really make Thunderstrike a great character unto himself.

I hope, with Beta Ray Bill coming back into the fold and now Thunderstrike either getting revamped or coming back in some form as well, we finally start to see Tarene and maybe even Valkyrie as part of a "Thor family." I thought Tarene was used to great effect in Jurgens' run but she kind of dropped off the scene halfway through and never really came back except for in Avengers: The Initiative, wherein she was dropped again after only a couple of significant issues with her. Supposedly, she was searching for Thor after his return, but we haven't seen s*** about that.

I like Volstagg but Embedded was basically Siege's version of the Frontline tie-ins to various events, and I've heard those Frontline comics are usually pretty terrible. So I skipped it.

That's the Ages of Thunder Books. Three one shots.
First was Ages of Thunder
second was Reign of Blood
Third was Man of War

They were all Norse myth adapted to how Thor was banished. Each book was a different age or different Ragnarok. Basically the idea was the Asgardians had relived the same thing over and over until Odin got right mix of Thor so to speak Until Thor breaks the Cycle of Ragnarok and that's the Stan Lee's Thor. The JMS and Coipel Thor and Asgardians are a new age.

By Marc Strom

The Destroyer at Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2010 booth
Behind Odin's massive throne at the Marvel Booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2010 stood two sliding doors that, when opened, revealed none other than the Destroyer, one of the most powerful entities to ever menace Thor and his fellow Asgardians.

While the Destroyer's role in the upcoming film remains shrouded in mystery, its history in the comics goes back more than 40 years! Fear not, True Beleivers, because we've got the highlights of its comics career just for you!

Loki's Plaything

The Destroyer, powered up
As revealed during its first appearance in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #118, Odin created the Destroyer as a last defense against an apocalyptic threat. Odin gave it so much power that none save the Allfather himself could possibly stop it, yet the Destroyer has no mind of its own. Instead, anyone who comes near the Destroyer when it lacks a host can take control of the monstrous weapon, leaving their own body an empty shell.

The mischievous Loki first arranged for an archaeologist with less-than-noble intentions to awaken the Destroyer in an attempt to stymie Thor. But the Trickster soon realized the Destroyer could very well kill Thor, an act that would lead to Loki's own death at the hands of an enraged Odin. In the end, Loki was forced to help Thor defeat the very threat he set upon the Odinson.

For more, read JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #118-119, collected in ESSENTIAL THOR, VOL. 1.

A Herald of Galactus

The Destroyer and Thor
The Destroyer would return a number of times, including once when the Lady Sif took possession of the weapon to protect a depowered Thor from the Wrecker. Thor soon offered it up to the world-devouring Galactus as a new herald in exchange for the freedom of his previous herald, Firelord. In the type of inspired insanity only Marvel can accomplish, the Destroyer served as a loyal herald, finding the High Evolutionary's Counter Earth and fighting against the Fantastic Four for that world's existence.

For more, read THOR #224-225 and FANTASTIC FOUR #172-175, the latter of which is collected in ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR VOL. 8.

Earth's Last Hope

The Destroyer meets his fate
The Destroyer's destiny caught up with him as the Fourth Host of the Celestials--the very threat that Odin created the Destroyer to stop--came to pass a final judgment over Earth. In the climactic battle, Odin sends his own mind into the Destroyer, drawing upon the life energies of all those in Asgard until it grows to the size of the Celestials themselves. In a battle fierce enough to sear the eyes of any reader, the giant Destroyer takes up the Odinsword and dukes it out with the Celestials until they accomplish what not even the Mighty Thor could do: The total destruction of the Destroyer.

For more, read THOR #300, collected in THOR: THE ETERNALS SAGA VOL. 2.

Thor, the Destroyer

Thor inhabits the Destroyer
While a number of artists have drawn the Destroyer through the years, none have deviated too far from its original design, which also inspired the Destroyer from "Thor" seen at Comic-Con. The only significantly different design came from artists Walter Simonson and Sal Buscema, in a story penned by Simonson that saw Thor's mind transferred into the Destroyer shell as his real body was destroyed.

After the Fourth Host reduced the Destroyer to slag, Loki managed to rebuild it from the little metal left over. The villain hoped to defeat a weakened Thor with the weapon, but his plan backfired. The Son of Odin took control of the Destroyer himself after his own body had been reduced to nothing.

For more, read THOR #380-382, collected in THOR VISIONARIES: WALTER SIMONSON VOL. 5.

Thor-Killer

The Destroyer, deadly weapon
Dan Jurgens and John Romita, Jr. kicked off their epic run on the Asgardian Avenger's title with an event few thought possible: The death of Thor. The Destroyer, controlled by a man named Colonel Chase, unleashed its full power on Thor, leaving the Son of Odin's soul in Hela's grip until the mighty one managed to escape back to the mortal world.

Single-handedly defeating the entire Avengers, the Destroyer succumbed to Thor's second attack, an onslaught of thunder and brute force that could level nations. Later, Thor would ask for Colonel Chase's assistance in freeing the trapped Asgardians from the Dark Gods, which the military man would only agree to should the Odinson help restore the Colonel's mind to its proper body. After aiding in the final battle against the Dark Gods, Odin fulfilled Thor's end of the deal by transporting Chase's life essence to his comatose body.

For more, read THOR Vol. 2 #1-2 and #11-12, collected in "THOR BY DAN JURGENS & JOHN ROMITA, JR. VOLS. 1 and 2

THAT in itself is a problem if Odin was taken unwillingly from the Realm of Death Odin was in.
Odin was basically keeping Surtur busy and from making any attempt to return the the living Realm.

My Thor: Son Of Asgard TPB was dispatched almost two weeks early for some reason. Heard great things, can't wait to read it.
What I have of SoA I love. I read some of the trade at Barnes and Noble awhile ago.

Trade's either been released already or is being released next week, depending on where you order it from, Vartha. ;)

No, they came out as two small digests before. This time they're releasing the whole series in one full-size trade paperback.

Could any of you tell me Loki's origin? I'm quite new to the Thor universe, I know a lot about him, but I'm a bit confused about the whole Frostgiants being Loki's parents?

Loki was born a frost giant runt, so he's actually around the same size as a normal human or a god. Because of this, his father basically treated him like crap. Odin led the Asgardians in a raid on his father's kingdom, killed Loki's father, and adopted Loki. Odin raised him alongside his son Thor, but Loki's natural tendency toward cunning and sorcery over more battle-oriented skills led the very warrior-centric Asgardians to look down on him. Additionally, Loki's own sense that he didn't belong and his inferiority complex compared to Thor grew over the years into full-blown jealousy of Thor and hatred of Odin for not treating him as well as Thor. Since around his adolescence, he's been doggedly attempting to both earn Odin's acceptance and take revenge on him, Thor, and the other Asgardians for perceived slights by taking over Asgard through various schemes and tricks.

No problem. Probably the best Loki story ever was a mini-series called Loki by Robert Rodi and Esad Ribic. Really gets you inside Loki's head and shows you his perspective on a lot of things. It's being re-released as a hardcover with the title Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers pretty soon. If you can spare the $25 or $30 for it, I'd highly recommend picking that up.

Yeah. I took a glass of water and turned the page and Loki got his face half tore off, and my finger was barely wet when I checked! :csad:

That stinks Dee. I had that happen once too. Tho the recent mess ups were either Thor 7 or 8 with me the staples were so tight in the comic book the center pages ripped out!

HMMM Found Ultimate Thor #1 rather interesting.
ONE thing that stuck me odd is Ulik being the Troll Forging Mjolnir. Hope the Dwarves are going to be IN Ultimate Thor.
Still having an origin for Ulty Thor is a good thing, just to point out the differences in the two universes.
In a strange way I'm enjoying the book so far because right off they go into myth with the use of runes, where in 616 back in the day they seemed to avoid the magiks in the 616 universe until late in volume one.

Tho with first Thunder and the retelling of 616 origin I really wish they had chosen a different artist Tan Eng Huat is just not a favorite of mine. The series so far is better than I thought it'd be.

I'm ambivalent about First Thunder so far. The portrayal of Thor and Blake as two completely different people is offputting to me.

I'm wondering if that's how it plays out in the movie? Seems like for the most part the Foster/Thor relationship are similar

Despite the great run, I think Marvel lost an opportunity to create a great new start for the Asgardians. I think they should have proven that Balder was a better, wiser choice as the new king. Just as Odin ruled with his two brothers, it should have been Balder wiedling Gugnir, Tyr controlling the Destroyer, and then Thor with his hammer. Three brothers guiding the Asgardians to a new future.

Vartha

Yeah I'm a bit miffed Tyr and Balder are gone. I'm just hoping this Fear crud has something to do with it and they aren't really dead.
