Exclusive: Stephen Sommers to Direct 'G.I. Joe' Sequel
By Jeff Sneider
Published: August 03, 2010
"G.I. Joe" director Stephen Sommers will return to direct Paramount's sequel, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
There had been some doubts about whether Sommers would be brought back into the "Joe" fold, as there were conflicting reports (http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/06/11/rumor-stephen-sommers-fired-mid-way-through-gi-joe) across the blogosphere (http://www.movieline.com/2009/06/exclusive-paramount-source-says-stephen-sommers-still-on-gi-joe.php) last summer that there had been some tension between Sommers and the studio, but the alleged bad blood appears to have been resolved.
Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser in the sequel, which is still in development at Paramount.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Collider (http://www.collider.com/2010/01/06/exclusive-gi-joe-sequel-is-happening-writer-has-been-hired) reported earlier this year that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland") were hired to write the sequel, and I'm told that the studio is happy with the draft they turned in.
Sommers will likely produce with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" grossed more than $300 million worldwide last year on a reported production budget of $175 million, not including prints and advertising.

Hhhhmmm, was hoping for a better director this time around, but maybe Sommers can up his game and make a sequel that is better than the first movie.

I liked the first one and I'm fine with Sommers returning (although I certainly would not have minded if Tatum had been replaced). Hopefully has a better script to work with this time (which he should, since we're out of the writers' strike and the Zombieland guys are writing it). Personally, I'm just happy to finally have some news! :)
Something that needs to be remembered about the first film was that the production was rushed due to the writers' strike. The new movie will not have that problem, as a considerable amount of time has been spent on writing the script already and it's not even done yet.

I remember watching the commentary and Sommers talked about only having about 7-9 months to get the movie done as apposed to the 12-15 months a big production like that usually gets...all due to the Writers Strike

^Lets hope he can churn out something a bit better this time then, I like the first movie, but it has huge flaws and ones that need to ironed out majorly.

Stephen Sommers won't return for the sequel.

24 Frames confirms that Stephen
Sommers will not be returning for
the sequel after all: Two agents who represent other filmmmakers have said they'd recently been approached about their clients coming on to helm the
movie and were told that Sommers would not be getting behind the
camera. Paramount declined to
comment.
Alright.

There are very few projects in the history of cinema that I would want to see Michael Bay take the lead on. G.I. Joe is is one of them that is just a perfect fit for him though.
I would love to see him reboot this with his eye for military glamour and badassness.

Fits together like peanut butter and jelly. Somehow I think the idea of his vision being applied to the two biggest Hasbro lines would be an attractive proposition.

Bay usually put a lot of military in his movies and also in the Transformers movies which makes me wonder why he didn't do a G.I. Joe movie instead. Anyway he said that he wants to do a small movie after TF3 so it's very unlikely, I'm interested on which directors the agents are representing.

Well, not surprised or sad that Sommers has gone, not that I disliked the first movie but it could have been a lot better, will be interesting to see who gets the gig or even if this gets made.

I'm sure Bay could do some of the heroes well enough.
But his Cobra would be nothing like the cartoons and comics. He likes to put his own retarded stamp on stuff like that.

I would have been fine with Sommers returning, but I can't stand Channing Tatum as Duke. He's the male Megan Fox. He's a lousy actor and he only gets attention because of his looks. Armie Hammer from The Social Network would be a good replacement, but there's no indication right now that they're looking to replace Tatum. For the most part I was fine with the rest of the cast, but please, let's have a bit less Ripcord next time.

I love it when people knock Sommers and then say they should bring in Bay. I really think some of you have no idea what you want for this franchise.

Josh Duhamel would've been an awesome Duke, imo. Damn it, Bay. Why didn't you just do G.I.Joe?

Fire Marlon Wayans. Get rid of the lips on Snake Eyes mask. Why the **** does his mask have a sculpted, molded mouth when the dude doesn't even ****ing talk?

The only reason I can think of for giving SnakeEyes a mouth is so the actor could breath easier. I don't mind Marlon so much but IMO he had zero chemistry with the actress that played Scarlett. I wouldn't mind if they ditched the Darth Vader enhanced voice they gave Cobra Commander at the end.

Although I don't think Bay would have done a better job with this movie, Duhamel would have made a far better Duke then Tatum.

You're talking about the guy that directed Van Helsing. We know it's gonna be a turdburger.

1) Sommers already directed a GI Joe movie and I think most people here have already seen it. You're a bit late to be damning him via Van Helsing.
2) He's not even directing GI Joe 2, anyway.

I haven't seen it because I didn't hear one good thing about it, and frankly I was uninterested. I'm even less interested now knowing that Sommers directed it.
