Is anyone a fan of this site?
I love it. Even I don't always agree with their opinions that have the freshest, funniest take on movie reviews. The podcast are great too. I started listening after I saw their Seven Pounds review on youtube back in 08

Listened to them a couple of times then stopped. They're a prime example of why I dislike the internet at times. Just like most critics, I agree with them at times and other times I don't. I just don't like how the average A-hole thinks they're professional critics due to the internet giving everyone this giant soapbox.

I would rather read or listen to the reviews of well read professional critics than a bunch of average joes. To be honest one of the main reasons I don't care for them, as well as other wannabe critics is that they are seemingly trying too hard to be cool and hip constantly throwing in unnecessary puns and jokes rather than doing what they're supposed to be doing...informing the audience of the movie. I don't give two ****s about your sense of humour or in some critic's cases, your vocabulary. I just want to know if the movie sounds decent or not.

Basically, these guys are no different than if a few friends of mine got together with me and we started doing reviews on the internet. It's just silly thinking that people will actually give a damn about your sight when it's one out of hundreds.

Well, you're wrong, Figs.

If you asked them right now, they will tell you that they are not professional critics. They will tell you that they are a bunch of average joes. They aren't pretending to be anything other than that and I don't know who or what gave you the idea that they were anything other than that.

So, I guess they just aren't your cup of tea.

and oh, I loove spill.com. :D I've been a fan for almost 2 years probably.

Figs, If your friends are funny then yeah you should make your own film reviews

I like that their not critics that they think for the most part like average joes. How many professional critics will say something along the lines of: "this movie isn't good, but rent it on DVD and get drunk and have a a great time watching it.

There not uppity, there not boring, they make it fun

Well, you're wrong, Figs.

Not really, it's my opinion that I don't care for reviews from average joes that throw in unnecessary humour trying to be cute and funny. I just read your next statement and will answer that below if that's what you're referring to about me being "wrong".

If you asked them right now, they will tell you that they are not professional critics. They will tell you that they are a bunch of average joes. They aren't pretending to be anything other than that and I don't know who or what gave you the idea that they were anything other than that.

I know they are a bunch of average joes, it wasn't like I said they were professionals but bad critics. I was just saying that I prefer to read certain well written critics over average joes. Not trying to say they were something they're not.

So, I guess they just aren't your cup of tea.

I guess not, but since you're a big fan and you seemed to have taken a tiny bit of offense to my original post, I will say that it's nothing personal or biased towards them. I dislike most average joe reviews...unless they actually are reviewing the film in a serious and educated manner.

I get that people like that and certain comments like that are ok with me, they're final thoughts on the film basically. It's the stuff in the middle that can get annoying, the jokes and silly banter.

There not uppity, there not boring, they make it fun

I don't think they're boring either I just get the vibe from some amateur critics that they try to hard to be hip it seems.

I don't watch them really go to "should I see this movie?"

Hell no. If I want to see it I will. People either complain too much or praise too much. Everyone's opinion is different. I think their reviews are hilarious, even when I like or hate the movie they are reviewing. I don't agree with everything, but mostly I have the same feelings they do.

I never said that your average joe's opinion was less important but that most of them are not well read in the world of film. I like my reviews to have a bit of depth to them.

Also, what exactly does "i've lived my life in the art world" mean? It's not impressive to me if that's what you were going for. I should have clarified in my original post that when I typed this "or in some critic's cases, your vocabulary" that was meant towards certain professional critics and not really your average joes. Just because I would rather read from some professional critics does't mean I like them all, I actually hate the pretentious ones, the ones you referred to when you said they think they know everything.

It's quite humorous how some of you seem offended that I don't care for the Spill guys all that much.

What kind of reaction do expect when you don't provide a good reason? Your dislike boils down to, "they try too hard to be funny", and that's kind of a lame reason; especially since they actually are funny.

TNC9852002
08-09-2010, 07:34 PM
The thing I like about them is that they are an older group of guys commenting on a movie and since they aren't really "professional" I guess other that Carlyle (C. Robert Cargill), they don't have that kind of stuck-up and preppy on films like I've seen in other podcasts...They can really be opinionated from time to time though, but I guess we all are..

I don't really find it to be a lame reason necessarily. As for what kind of reaction did I expect. I didn't expect people to take it personally, at least that's what it seemed like.

I don't hate the Spill.com guys, I just find them a tad bit annoying for the most part is all. I know many will disagree but those are just my feelings on it.

I watch Spill's reviews on Youtube because they're hilarious. That's about it. It's a bunch of guys joking around about a movie they saw, occasionally giving the odd criticism among their humorous commentary.

ok first i was not directing my post to you personally if i was i would have quoted you. it was a general question that i felt was retaliative to the thread.

as for the life in the art world, i was just using that as an example maybe i should have explained myself better, i meant i have studied art for most if not all of my education and have had a lot of experience with so called "professional" critics, and some of the crap they believe and spout.

and i still do not understand why someone's opinion is more valid because he/she is a "pro". yes some have a valid opinion which they can back up but quite a lot seem to be ego driven.

i've always wonder what would happen is some of the great artists be they painters, photographers or film-makers who are no longer with us say if they heard what the pros say they were "symbolising" in they're work.

i'm not that fussed if you like spill or not, personally i enjoy there reviews but not always the final result and if we all agreed with them it would be boring as hell

Let's do this!!!!

Love the website. Discovered it a little more then a year ago through IGN.com. Clicked on a link to one of their reviews because the cartoon characters caught my eye, and found it to be hilarious. Shortly afterwards, started listening to a lot of their past reviews. Doesn't really matter if I agree with them or not on a particular movie, as long they're funny, which they usually are.

Not too long after going through their video reviews I found out about their podcasts, which are even funnier. Let's Do This is currently my favorite podcast to listen to. Love that Co-Host 3000!

I think I remember hearing that he was either getting married or just got married and was busy with that, plus he does reviews for other sites as ĆON said.

Back to topic though, love this site been using it for about a year now and I cant get enough of their reviews. I hardly ever agree with their reviews but I love the humour. I like watching these guys because its something I could see myself doing with my friends.

I'm a regular visiter to their site and love the podcasts and reviews. About 90% of the time I agree with their opinions.

Regarding Carlyle, he never went into detail, but just said his life was getting a lot busier and that he needed to take a step back from Spill a bit (And he's been married for a while, not just recently). He still does ACOCO and Blu Tuesday for the site.

Co-Host can go really overboard with his final review score (Either Full Price or Some 'Ole Bull****, it seems), but he's a lot of fun to listen to.

My favorite podcast is The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen. Great nerdy discussion and a lot of different opinions and laughs.

Which, understandably enough, stemmed from Comic-Con and trying to handle that mess. Going there as a fan is likely enough to drive you insane. I don't want to imagine trying to actually do WORK there.

ĆON
08-13-2010, 08:56 AM
Yeah, and not only that, but hollywood.com sent him by himself, so he had no one to help him out with the work.

Anyways, two new audio reviews have just been put up for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Expendables. Haven't seen either movie yet, so don't know if I agree with their final scores, but the reviews were still pretty funny.

Also, a video called Three Crazy Guys On Set has been posted involving Christian Bale vs. Mel Gibson. I thought it was pretty hilarious. Fans of the site should check it out.

Then he quit school and got a job at an animation house, working on Space Jam and Quest for Camelot. Mid to late 90s. He has to be in his late 30s or early 40s by now.

Yeah most of the crew is about 40
I know Cyrus is like 41

I think Caryle is actually one of the younger members of the crew, being 35. He mentioned his age once on 'A Couple of Cold Ones'. Co-Host could be younger too.

But yeah, I was in shock thinking that Korey is that old because he's so youthful. I'm in the belief that once you stop learning in life, that spark, that's when you become old and out of touch.

On the recent Lets Do This podcast, they were talking about Steve Jobs and the new iphone (which was recorded before his death). So it's becoming a trend for them, before Jobs it was Macho Man and before that it was Corey Haim. Here's a list of the curse:

It took me a while to come around to it---I didn't watch the first few volumes where they spent 90% of the time discussing comics and anime. Now that the show has expanded a lot to cover all kinds of news and media topics, I tend to watch them almost every week now...

I dig Remote Viewing on a bi-weekly basis and too much content is good if they are organized, which for the most part they are (they just released a youtube page for just the Loading Bar). The site is super easy to navigate and by giving out a lot of content, it gives them more hits on their site.

I had no problems with Carlyle, but I did notice the same issues in some of his last dozen appearances on ACOCO--he wasn't engaging anymore, he wasn't interacting very well with Korey, and he always seemed like he had something better to do.

Other than that, I loved how he had such insight into the business and with him being a well-known blogger and writer, he brought a lot of credibility to the site I thought, but it's true--he didn't quite fit in with the rest of the guys I'd say..

Carlyle didn't gel with the others. They apparently wanted a relaxed, leisurely environment, but he was always in a rush and they had to schedule around him.

He loved crappy movies. That much is obvious. He would praise terrible movies on a Harry Knowles level. That didn't necessarily make him a bad reviewer since I disagree with some of Leon's reviews. The difference is Carlyle often overwhelmed and talked over the other people in the review and too often steered the conversation towards what he considered were the good points of the movies he liked (which no one else wanted to discuss, because they weren't actually good points).

I just disliked Carlyle. Co-Host was a huge improvement. Guy's a hundred times funnier than Carlyle and has interesting takes on the movies he looks at (as opposed to Carlyle who would just gush about explosions and CGI and "turning off your brain" and other garbage).

The show used to be a lot more random when it came to the topics but it was steered towards a lot of stuff about race when Billy came on. Korey has even acknowledged (along with a whole bunch of members) this and is trying to fix it. I along with many others agree that Billy would work best as a periodic guest, like every month or even other month.

He does seem to talk over people a lot, Korey was trying to make a point in the last show but Billy just kept cutting in again and again. Listen to some of the shows in the archive before November of 2011 and you'll notice a difference.

Yeah, it's just different. I kinda liked the chaotic tone back in November when Billy became a regular though.

I disliked Carlyle (hate's too strong a word). I thought his movie opinions stunk, he talked over the guys when they were about to make an interesting point and he was too sensitive to their ribbing.

Co-host is awesome and was a great trade.

Co-host fits the team perfectly.

Trailer to Caryle's movie that he wrote, starring Ethan Hawke. It's called Siniester

I'm avoiding the trailer.

If they Spill crew enjoyed it, then that's all I need to hear.

lol, they really did.

I agree with Korey ultimately---what everyone else did was, they judged the movie as an adaptation of what they knew/expected and not as a movie on its own I think. Hey, don't get me wrong, I wasn't in love with the movie, but the issues that Cyrus and Co-Host had with the movie, didn't bother me nearly as much.

I agree with Korey, the others were far too harsh and honestly I found a lot of their criticism's nitpicky and over the top.

Oh god enough with the tired "Nolanite" crap. It's possible to love the movie without worshipping Nolan otherwise it wouldn't have a RT score in the 80s.

Prove it or stop. They're professional reviewers. Should they give a praised movie a bad review just to prove they don't belong to this Nolanite cult? If it's a bad film it will get a bad review, but I think some of you desperately want to be "too cool for school" with your Nolanite bashing when I'm sure none of you have seen the movie either.

Scorsese's films consistently get good reviews too and yet I never hear about scorsesites.

I think they can be insightful but focus more on the humor aspect than ever before. I still like the reviews but mostly for Corey. Co-Host is hilarious though.

Have you listened to the the most recent ACOCO? The one released today where Korey revealed they had been working on a short for TDKR for a couple of months. But the topic of it was nerd rage, taking place in a theater, deaths occur...so you can see how badly it could've turned out for them. Even if it was released before the shooting happened.

scorsese fans dont send death threat and attack anyone who criticises him, i wouldn't say the spill crew are nolanites but they certainly outnumber the regular fans

Just discovered these guys. I enjoy podcasts and reviews like this. I don't let them effect my opinion on the film or whether I should see a film. It's mostly that I find group discussions like this enjoyable and I like to hear people's opinions on things. Helps me see things I didn't before and find new perspectives.
