I think that it's time to move on from Reeve's and Routh's laughable hair.Something like Jim Lee's Superman perhaps?

Agreed. I always took the curl as a consquence of the quick change not a deliberate style. My hair does that after a long day and I won't lie - it's pretty sweet. :woot:

Yeah, definitely something more natural and free-falling.
Hell yeah, that spitcurl and the slick back grease-doe screams 1940's and 50's.
SR updated it a bit, but it was still there. LOSE IT! ..Or people are gonna point their fingers...

I believe that Tim Daly should voice the spit-curl.
I'd like to see Nolan explain the spitcurl and possibly see Supes greasing himself in front of a mirror :oldrazz:

This is a first for me, a thread on supes spitcurl. Kudoes for actually thinking up something new.
As for the voice of it, why none other than chuck norris.
That's our villain right there.

I always wondered why I haven't seen any discussion on his hair on these boards, and now here it is.
But yeah, I agree. The spit curl is pretty lame, its time to upgrade to the Jheri curl

I like the hairstyle from Superman: Birthright, sideburns and all.

Haha, I love this thread. It seems stupid, but honestly, I'm one who gets bugged by Superman's hair in most live-action incarnations (especially Superman Returns), so I'm definitely not gonna complain. Despite the fact that I just said in the Casting thread that I thought he wasn't right for the role, I do think Matt Bomer has the ideal hair for Supes - the perfect degree of "wavy." While I'm certainly against the concept of having so much hair product that makes the hair look like one solid object, and that ridiculous sculpted "spitcurl," a little natural curl in the front when it gets tousled would be perfect, imo.
For example, pre-tousling:

And a possible contrasting hairstyle for Clark Kent:

I don't give a crap so long as it looks natural, Tom Welling constantly has a split curl on Smallville that looks natural.. because it is 80% of the time. It just looks like his hair has fallen that way.
You can't have a fancy split curl that looks like it took 10 minutes to do in a mirror like Superman Returns one, it looks retarded when hes been flying at full speed for 30 seconds with his hair being tossed all over the place.. but when he lands it is completely fixed.

YES, absolutely. I don't mind having a separate "curl" that hangs a bit more central, aided by some product and styling, so long as it does not LOOK styled. CK's hair should looks combed and styled, Superman's hair should look natural and wind blown, but not messy.
Reeve's hair wasn't THAT bad, as the curl worked with the rest of the way the hair was styled, unlike Routh's in SR, where it looked like the guy from Shining Time Station.
The curl should look like the natural result of his wavy hair.

Show me ONE picture with Welling having an actual spit CURL. I did mention above that it should be more of a result of the waves in his hair, and Welling's hair has a TAD of a wave, I don't recall ever seeing anything resembling a natural looking "S" shaped curl in the front of his hair.
So long as it's not a "C" shaped curl like you get with many home attempts and the pictures used for marketing of Superman costumes on kids.

I don't think Reeve's nor Routh's curl is laughable. Quite the opposite actually, I think it's classy and classic.

I could care less myself, neither George Reeves nor Dean Cain had it. I think if it looks natural it's fine and Superman's hair can look a little more wavy and Clark's hair should be very conservative.

Exactly.
Something like this:

And something similar, but not quite as "free" flowing. I would prefer the above, but couldn't quite tweak this image to be as free looking, but I am liking the actor:

I have got to say, after seeing Bomer in all those pictures, I wouldn't mind him as Supes. Its a bummer though that he is only about 6'. But Jon Hamm is that height I would MUCH rather have Bomer as Superman. No disrespect to Jon Hamm or his fans, he is a talented actor, but I absolutely HATE the idea of Hamm as Superman

I think I agree with most here. Clark's hair should be carefully styled and slicked, where as Superman's hair is essentially Clark's all messed up. Once he's loosened his hair like that, the waviness makes a curl-like forelock hang over his forehead, like in the Bomer and Conway pics.

I hated Routh's hair in Superman Returns. It looked to weird and too brown.

His DC Universe Online look is perfect, hairwise:

I think he looks kinda bum'ish in that trailer which I think is intended. The hair is slightly frizzy and he's got pre-stubbles.
Kinda like:

But he definitely looks killer in that trailer!

I know, right? :whatever:
Edit: However, I must admit that it actually made sense for that version of Superman.

I think Byrne might have had the best take on Superman's signature hairstyle. I get the impression he took the way Reeve's hair looked only made it more natural by having it be wavy on it's own so that when it fell on his forehead it just kinda did the S thing by itself with little to no need for product.
For a current live-action version I think right now Tom Welling almost has that. It just needs to be a touch shorter. I kind of like the idea of his Superman hair being loose and a little longish (but not like that mullet garbage from the 90's) then his Daily Planet hair being slick and tight.
Then whenever we see him as just Clark the person rather than Clark the Daily Planet reporter he's got the loose Superman hair but maybe has his glasses on and wears a t-shirt and jeans. Illustrating that is at once both men and neither of them.
