Copycat. It's a great 90's thriller with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter about a serial killer copying the murders of famous serial killers like Dahmer, Bundy, and the Boston strangler.

The Brady Bunch Movie
Dark City
For Your Consideration
Gattaca
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
Glengarry Glen Ross
I'm Not There
The Informant!
The Ladykillers remake
The Life Aquatic (I need to rewatch, but I remember thinking it was better than its general reception said)
A Mighty Wind
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Pleasantville
Quantum of Solace
Quiz Show
Radio Days (a lot of Woody Allen movies were acclaimed when they came out but are practically obscure now)
Reversal of Fortune
Solaris remake

The Fountain (I honestly don't care what anyone says, I love this movie and think it's one of the best meditations of death and acceptance in any medium)
All That Jazz (I know it was nominated for several big awards for its time, but I think it's slipped far too much off the radar nowadays)
Hulk (I can actually understand why some weren't fond of this, but I still think it's quite good)
Ghostbusters 2 (This one I never understood the disdain for. It's not as good as the first by any means, but still very good and fun in its own right).

Predator (It's a classic among Sci-Fi fans and it should be on AFI's list of 100 Thrills but unfortunately, it's not)

Batman Returns (Most misunderstood Batman film, keeps the fanbase and audiences divided. When it's actually one of the best of the series, up their with The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Batman '89)

Lust Caution--a wonderful romantic spy thriller that, aside from some leering notices for its sexual content, came and went in the U.S.

Memento Mori--a superb coming-of-age horror story. One of the first Korean commercial films to depict lesbian characters

Millennium Mambo--not really underrated, but considering its quality it should have gotten as much attention as Three Times and Flight of the Red Balloon

Pi - The first movie Aronofsky directed turns out to be one of his best.
The Conversation - the movie mostly never get mentioned when talking about Francis Ford Coppola's best movie.
Letters from Iwo Jima - It's a great war movie and I like that it focused on the event of Battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese side.
Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander) - I love this movie.
Paths of Glory - For me it was Kubrick's first masterpiece.

I think a lot of the people loving TOD now saw it when they were kids, and the nostalgia factor usually goes a long way. I saw it for the first time when I was 22 and still liked it a lot, but I can see it being one of those things that's not well liked at the time because it's too different from its predecessor.

i have to say, this was the first indy flick i saw as a kid, and that is not true for me at all, you would be as well to say the same to me about Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Raiders, superman I and II...just because you don't love the movie does not mean that i wdo not truly love it as a piece of art just as much as an adult, or would not have the same reaction to it as an adult on 1st viewing.
the things that folk hate about it, willie, shortround, too dark, whatever...i love about it.
it's truly a great action/adventure movie, and in the indy pantheon has it;'s own unique flavour(unlike LC and KOTCS), that is what goes a long way, for me.

Which is what alot of people don't seem to get. TOD is great because it's so different from Raiders. I love LC as much as the next guy, but the third act pretty much became Raiders all over again. People love Raiders so much, they want the films to be like it. Which is wrong. I'll just watch Raiders if I want that. I appreciate what KOTCS did for moving it in a different direction. In fact, it shares the same criticisms as TOD does. People give LC a pass because it's like Raiders. I keep saying this, the movie wouldn't be as good without Connery and/or the idea of the father. If that wasn't there it would be a rehash of Raiders.

A Perfect World. I never really see it mentioned much when people talk about Clint Eastwoods films. Its not his best but I thought it was a good movie.

Enemy Mine. A really interesting sci fi film of the 80's that people like but never seems to get as much focus as Wolfgang Petersons other films like Never Ending Story, Das Boot, etc.

Night of The Living Dead 1990. A remake of a horror classic that I really enjoyed. Stayed pretty faithful but made some logical updates for the times. The Dawn of The Dead remake is fresher in peoples minds but NOTLD 90 came first and really had some good acting by Tony Todd and the makeup was good.

Great idea for a thread!. I'm surprised at many of the movies being posted here. Many of them i thought were considered to be Good or rated fairly:huh:. There's to many movies i feel are underrated for me to list or think of so I'll just generalize my response to the thread into a single group and just cosign with whats already been posted.........Because I'm lazy:o....

Direct to DVD movies - IMO these movies are Always getting overlooked or just not Looked at all because the consensus seems to be that if its a D-DVD its just not worth looking at. Oh How many great movies have been slept on due to this fact:wall:...

predator 2

Oh yeah, I've always felt this one was always underrated. Its definitely not as bad as its been made to seem. Good action movie IMO...

Blind Fury

I got to say, this one kinda touched me:o. Rutger Hauer became one of my favorite actors after this(Can't wait to see 'Hobo with a Shotgun'!!:woot:). It had its cheese but not enough to bring it down IMO...

Gojira- Most Americans point towards Cooper and Schoedsack's King Kong as the greatest monster movie ever made, but I feel that Honda's movie is better, aside from a technical standpoint.

Definitely agree with this one. I have to say that with what they had to work with, it truly was a great movie...

I think Watchmen is highly underrated. Other than the prison break scene, the sex scene, and some of Malin's acting, I thought the film was great. It was a decent film. I think it suffered from being a sequel to a movie with a cult following. I think the biggest problem with The Chronicles of Riddick was that it just wasn't Pitch Black. If it had been the first film to come out it might have been viewed differently. It could have been the first in a series of "Conan in Space" type movies.

Yeah, see, this is probably why I enjoyed it more. I viewed Riddick before Pitch Black so I kind of came into it with no preconditioned thought on the character and the type of movie it was trying to be.

Is that movie that good?

It was streaming on Neflix, but they took it down before I got a chance to watch all of it. I watched the first 10 minutes then had to turn it off due to something else. When it comes to period pieces, I really, really have to be in the mood for them. Especially when they're 3+ hours long.

Yes it is, and then some. It is also indeed a very long movie, so like you say you have to be in the right mood for it. But you will be tremendously rewarded.
But I also understand it's not for everyone's taste, but people who like it, like me, usually really really love it. (I think it's my favorite K film or at least for sure in the top 3.)
So, if you're in the right frame of mind, grab some food, some drinks and prepare yourself for an incredible journey, a Kubrickian Time Machine and watch magnificent painting come to life before your eyes.
You're a cinephile, Figs, you have to watch Barry Lyndon at some point in your life:woot:.

I just bought a ton of Hong Kong phooey Brucesploitation films. While the plots are horrible and the dubbing is worse than a milli vanilli music video the martial arts sequences are pretty cool and make the films worth watching.

Interesting, I never thought of that and I like the idea. It's also a brilliant modern, Gothic, retelling of the Faust story, crossed with the original tale of The Phantom of the Opera, as well as a sort of Rock musical. It is weird and great at the same time and somehow I'm not surprised that Cage is a big fan:woot: (Please don't let him or anyone remake it.)

One of the best and most meaningful war movies.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51kXG4U3QEL._SL500_.jpg

At the start they fight like cat and dog, away from the outside world they begin to co-operate. Towards the end of the movie, once they reach the remains of civilisation again, a picture of dead bodies in a magazine creates a deus ex Machina of there attitude to each other, at that point a bomb literally goes off killing them both. Like a big bomb of hate! Or something....

Toshiro Mifune doesn't talk "Engrish" nor are subtitles used keeping up a culture barrier. Neither Toshiro Mifune or Lee Marvin portrayed as outright good guys or bad guys with "Go USA!" crap. Like "cast away" (which was probably influenced by this movie there is very little dialogue. This movie is awsome and cought me by surprise, I was totally expecting another generic war movie.

A self-aware horror movie, it trumps New Nightmare and precedes Scream. It follows the movie-within-a-movie formula, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Scream is the better film in that its wittier and more streamlined but don't be misled by the trailer or the creators; Popcorn is intelligent, funny and observant. I'm not a fan of Clive Barker's Hellraiser, but here's a movie of his that stirred my imagination. Nightbreed. Clive Barker's superhero entry. His X-Men. And I love it.

Nightbreed is an imperfect film, sure. Like The Exorcist III, the real monsters over at Morgan Creek Productions cut this movie up, removing nearly a half hour of footage, and you can tell. The first half is fine, but the second half is kind of chaotic. Still, Nightbreed is such a visual feast with a variety of odd characters, breathtaking creatures, quirky dialogue, elaborate effects, that I can't help but enjoy every moment of it. It's one exciting ride.

You also have David Cronenberg as psychiatrist Dr. Decker, and he's excellent. For all of the bizarre creatures, Cronenberg is the most creepy thing about this movie.

I remember this movie! Couldn't remember the title, though. The porcupine chick was what stuck out in my mind. Indeed a an underrated treasure.

Another underrated movie: Conan, the Barbarian.

I enjoyed this film. (I actually saw it just a few weeks ago for the first time. But I wish there was an evil clown in there. I love evil clowns

I really love this movie and Timothy Doltans as bond in general.

The living daylights has a really good balance of serous edge and fantastical fun. Without either being in the ridiculous Roger Moore extreme or the boring straight faced Daniel Craig extreme. The story is fairly decent as well. The final action sequence with the plane is freaking awesome, the best "climax" sequence in a bond movie imo. I also liked the female character, she seemed less a throwaway or token "girl" like alot of bond movie. The music score is also awsome, it has a cool little theme specifically for this movie in diffrent forms.

All in all I think this is one of the best Bond movies with the best Bond. It's the sort of crap I can watch over and over again when it's got a re-run on tv. This is not the case with Casino Royal.

its also on watch instant on Netflix...all the Bond films up to License to Kill are...but The Living Daylights is a favorite of mine, Dalton did well as Bond and it has one of the better title songs of the Bond films

It also has possibly the most brilliant badguy plot in all of James Bond, as well as being believable without sacrificing the Bond-ness (looking at you QoS). The badguys in the film also have entertaining personalities, especially the cowardous main one.

Just watched this, holds up really well.
From the build up to the doll reveal with Brad Dourif's vicious performance to the climax of a black and cindered mutilated doll, it's freaking awesome.

Watched this just a bit ago, one of my favorite movies. Catherine Hicks is very good in this movie, shame she couldn't get much work besides 7th Heaven afterwards.

I'd recommend the special edition dvd to anyone interested who hasn't seen it. A ton of interviews and behind the scenes footage on there.

Yes, what is with that? And he's pretty close to Fleming's conception of Bond--in a lot of ways, closer than Connery.

Great film, possibly Polanski's best. And your Young Frankenstein analogy is perfect, because Polanski and Brooks obviously both truly respected and loved the genre they were spoofing.
Not really underrated though I think, just unfortunately kinda forgotten maybe, but it was a hit upon release I believe and people who've seen it still remember it fondly.
And Sharon Tate was so beautiful in it:awesome:

I liked Dalton as Bond, but unfortunately didn't really care that much about the movies he was starring in. Kinda like Brosnan in a way, he deserved better material.

Phantom of the Paradise- A great, over-the-top, mess of a movie. It was thrashed by critics but it's such a strange, fun movie that I can't help but love it. In fact outside out Untouchables, Carrie, and Scarface some of De Palma's movies don't get the love they deserve. Blow Out is another fantastic one. Although not underrated more unappreciated.

Speaking of unappreciated The Ruling Class is one of my favorite movies of all time. Peter O'Toole's best performance. Kind of part musical, part farce where O'Toole plays a man who thinks he's God...or Jack the Ripper.

Blow Out, a great thriller, one of John Travolta's best performances, I love John Lithgow, the cinematography was great and I thought this had a lot of well staged suspenseful scenes.

I'll also say:
Road to Perdition
Z (possibly the best political thriller I've seen)
The Man Who Wasn't There (I've never understood why this one isn't as highly regarded as some other Coen films)
Make Way for Tomorrow (terrific Leo McCarey flick with one of the saddest endings ever)

I love Z:up:. I wouldn't say it's underrated though, not very well known States side maybe, but much loved in Europe.
I also really like Road to Perdition and agree that it's underrated.

I forgot about The Ruling Class, i have that on vhs, I'll need to give it a re-watch, haven't watched it in about 10yrs or something, I recall it was very funny seeing PoT on his Jesus trip.
I tried watching Blow out the other month, but got distracted and went online, I don't think i was in the mood for that kind of movie that day.
and PoTP, as i was saying to gwynplaine a couple of months ago, I watched that when i was very wee, looking at it as a weird superhero movie, cause of the way the phantom was dressed, I have to see that again for sure, I'll have to get it off e-bay or something.
