Actor Wesley Snipes headed to prison for tax evasion

MIAMI (Reuters) - Actor Wesley Snipes was ordered on Friday to start serving a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns by a federal judge who rejected the Hollywood star's bid for a new trial.

"The defendant Snipes had a fair trial ... The time has come for the judgment to be enforced," U.S. District Judge Terrell Hodges said in his ruling.

Revoking bail for the 48-year-old star of the "Blade" trilogy, the judge ordered him to report to prison as directed by the U.S. Marshals Service or Bureau of Prisons.

It was not clear when or where Snipes would begin serving his time behind bars, however. His lawyer, Daniel Meachum, has said he would appeal if a new trial was denied.

Meachum told the Orlando Sentinel the ruling was shocking.

"Wesley is very disappointed but staying strong and positive," the newspaper quoted Meachum as saying.

Snipes had already lost his appeal of the prison sentence stemming from his 2008 conviction in Hodges' Ocala, Florida, court on three counts of "willful failure to file tax returns" for 1999 through 2001.

Snipes was found not guilty of five other counts in the high-profile felony tax case.

In seeking a new trial, Meachum had argued that jurors in the original trial were biased and that the prosecution's star witness had his own criminal problems.

At his sentencing, prosecutors said Snipes, a resident of Windermere, Florida, had earned more than $38 million since 1999 but had filed no tax returns or paid any taxes through October 2006.

Although he is best known for his roles in action films, Snipes has also had critical success in comedies like "White Men Can't Jump" in 1992. He played the lead in director Spike Lee's interracial drama "Jungle Fever" in 1991 and also played the jazz saxophonist in Lee's "Mo' Better Blues" in 1990.

Eric Thompson, a supervisor in the U.S. Marshals Service office in Orlando, Florida, said the Bureau of Prisons would notify Snipes and his lawyer of a surrender date.

"He'll probably get it by certified mail," Thompson said.

He declined to say what prison was likely to be selected for Snipes except to say that it would not be in Florida.

A listing for Snipes already posted on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website says his prisoner ID or registration number as 43355-018, his location is "in transit" and his release date is "unknown.

It won't be anywhere near 3 years.....he will POSSIBLY serve 8 months per year equaling 24 months....at the longest - any time that he has already spent in jail (if any)....

Poor Snipes. If i were him, i would just get this over and done with. It's been hanging over his head for years now....

I think one of the reasons why we haven't seen him in a lot of movies lately, is because very few studios want to invest in someone who, at anytime during the movie shoot, could get hauled off to prison.

He was at first in jail awhile ago but he had bail

Which was the reason why he was able to promote "Brooklyn's Finest."

He may need Tarantino when he is out in 2013.

Snipes is a way to big badass to not make movies anymore .

he needs a movie that will bring him back. it needs to be a small movie with a fantastic story. then you go and make a badass action movie.

can't he just give them the money he owes or his assets to cover the cost. 3 years in prison seems kind of long plus its costs thousands of dollars a year house him in prison.

no he cant and he shoudlnt be able to. If someone commits a crime, they shouldnt just be able to pay their way out of a sentence

Its not like he murdered someone or supplied cocaine to ophans. Not condoning what he did but paying what he owes as well as court costs a stern warning that if he doesn't again he will go to prision as well as the damage to his career and reputation should really be punishment enough.

3 years in prison isn't going to get the tax money he owes back infact peoples taxes dollars are going to keeping him in prision and they are already full as it is.

No he didnt kill anyone but its about principle. People shouldnt cheat the system and then say "oops, let me pay it back and let it be okay", after they are caught. The American prison system isnt perfect but its there for a reason. If people didnt have to worry about risking jail time, chances are alot more people would not be paying their taxes. The ones that could theoretically afford to pay off their sentences are the rich executives who only do it to get richer. They shouldnt have the option to throw money at the courts so they dont have to face punishment. Besides I dont think Snipes is in that position. He hasnt had a hit in years and has mainly been doing direct to DVD films in the last several years. He isnt rolling in money and most likely did this bc of that. He probably couldnt afford to pay back the money he owes and court fees.

Snipes should be forced to pay what he owes AND serve the approrpiate punishment. If they feel its 3 years, then so be it. He will most likely not even be in there that long wtih good behavior and parole. Maybe 18 months tops.

As far as damage to his career and reputation, there was none. People dont care about this stuff. Stars have done much worse than evade taxes and come back revered and loved by their fans. If anything its embarassing, but it hasnt done anything to ruin him.
