It always amazes me how many different actors would make an fantastic Perry White. While Frank Langella was decent enough, I can't help thinking what it would be like if we get a great performance like Jason Robards in All The President's Men. Who would you pick for Superman's editor in chief?

He's usually seen as a Pa Kent, but I think Kurt Russell would make an outstanding Perry White.

Outside the box suggestion and maybe a tad unrealistic but I don't know if there's an actor that does "gruff" better than this guy:

Heres a question.
How would you want Perry White to be portrayed and which actor do you think would be able to pull of that portrayal?
Frank Langella played a more reserved Perry and while that was ok, Id rather have a more active opinionated and louder version.
I like Ed O'Neil for the role. He absolutely kills in Modern Family and in his portrayal as Jay I can easily the qualities Id like for Perry.

Bruce McGill has the perfect Perry White look. Just needs to lose the jacket, have a cigar in his fist and I'd be almost completely convinced. I'd just need to hear him bark out "Olsen".

It's "Great Caesar's ghost!" dammit!:woot: In all seriousness though McGill is pretty much note perfect, and I'm kicking myself for not having thought of him. Maybe I'm not being open minded about this, but a lot of these choices I have trouble picturing as Perry. It's just I've always pictured him as this Colonel Potter type, which is kindof how he's always been depicted in the movies and tv shows. This old, gruff but fatherly/grandfatherly type.
Guys like Alec Baldwin don't give off that vibe. I mean sure, he could play the editor of a newspaper, but he just seems like he would play it more like a modern, slick, suave businessman and not as an old fashioned curmudgeon. He's more Luthor than anything.
Casting Michael Keaton would just feel like a gimmick to me, because it feels like he's being picked because he's most known for playing Batman. It's the same when people suggest him for other well known comic roles like the Joker. Plus he's never struck me as the Perry White type either.
On top of that, a lot of them are just so well known that it would be hard to picture them as anything other than Alec Baldwin or Michael Keaton. It's like that with Tom Selleck too. It would help more if they had any of the traditional traits of the character, but that combined with their celebrity status just makes it hard to believe them in the role.

Perry is a harder role to cast than one would think, IMO. I don't know why, but I've always had a very specific image in my mind for this character, and while there are a lot of really good names mentioned here, I can picture very few of them as Perry for some reason.
For example, Frank Langella is a great actor. There's no debating that. He can command the screen (Frost/Nixon) and he can also be fractured and sympathetic (Wall Street 2). But as Perry White? In my humble opinion, he was horrible. Maybe it was just the writing, but to me, he came off like a senile old man that wandered off of the rest home.
I think what makes Perry a tough role to nail is you need an actor who acts as though he stepped out of a 1940s newsroom, wired and fiery, almost in his own little world but not to the point where he becomes Willy Loman talking to his dead brother.

The writing was fine. Langella himself consciously decided to play Perry as the strong, quite type. He's a great actor and I understood why he played it the way he did, but it was different from the traditional Perry White we're used to (Jackie Cooper, Lane Smith, etc.)
The role was originally was meant for Hugh Laurie though and I would have loved to have seen what his Perry would have been like. I have a feeling it would have been really memorable.

I thnk a great against type casting would be Alan Rickman. but the only American accent I've heard him do was the awesome 'Country Bumpkin' accent when he first meets John McClain in Die Hard.

Gilmore Girls and character vet Edward Herman would make a great Perry White imo. He can be comical, warm, and hard driving at the same time. The problem with him, is the guy is like 6'5 so he'd be taller then Cavill.Lol.

I just saw a silly web rumor on another mb the other day about Deniro being eyed for Perry White. Sounds like fanboy wishing but that would be cool imo.

i'd be incredibly happy with DeNiro, Baldwin or Jeff Bridges.

Bridges with IM is still fresh enough in my mind though. He may appear villainous because of this sub-conciously.

It might not be so bad. Alan Napier was quite a bit taller than Adam West, and Morgan Freeman is taller than Christian Bale.

Ryan Renolds = Deadpool & Green Lantern
Chris Evans = Johnny Storm & Captain America
if anything, Robert Downey Jr being Tony Stark should've gotten in the way of my ability to enjoy him as Sherlock Holmes but such is not the case. i was able to watch Tron and True Grit just fine considering the fact that Iron Man was the last thing i had seen Jeff Bridges in. besides, in IM he had a bald head and a goatee. Perry White is the exact opposite, a full head of hair and no facial hair.

I love Jeff, but I think Beau fits Perry more.

i haven't really cared for anything Beau has done. plus Jeff is more marketable being an Academy Award winner and all.

Bridges might be a good Perry White but I'll always see him as the Dude.
DeNiro, Hoffman, Pacino, Goodman, or McGill. There it is.

Kurt Russell is another one that comes to mind. Don't know if he's been brought up yet.

There are dozens of actors that can play this role, and they don't have to be huge names. Case in point: Tom Berenger, Kurtwood Smith, Dan Lauria, Bill Smitrovich - all good candidates.

Neither. Hugh laurie gets my vote.

In my humble opinion, Perry is more or less iconic than Superman (:woot:), so a big name actor would fit nicely with the role.
De Niro :awesome:
