Often reality can be stranger than fiction.
I really enjoy a good documentary.
I'd like to hear some of your favorites and why.
Here are a few of mine. (I couldn't find a similar thread but if there is please merge. Thank you.)
_ When We Were Kings. "Rumble in the Jungle". Ali at his greatest.
_ Hearts of Darkness. Almost as crazy as the film that birthed it.
_ Exit Through the Gift Shop. An iconoclastic look and deconstruction of the Street Art Movement.
_ My Best Fiend. When Klaus met Werner.
I'll think of more later.

_ Anvil: The Story of Anvil. Very moving doc about a Heavy Metal Band.
_ This is Spinal Tap. Very funny "Mockumentay" about a fake Heavy Metal Band.
_ Catfish. Where does truth ends and fiction begins? Hard to tell and interesting nonetheless.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting. I kind of expected more of a 'Steroids are bad, kids' kind of film, but it has an interesting shift on the subject as the film goes on.

I just watched Waking Sleeping Beauty.
Anyone with an interest in animation and specifically Disney should check this film out. It's about the Disney Renaissance of the late 80s and early 90s; the hiring of Michael Eisner & Jeffrey Katzenberg and the success of Mermaid, Lion King, etc. It's made up almost entirely of home movies from inside the Disney Animation studio and its a great insight into the ups and downs of a brilliant period in animation.

there is a phenomenal documentary called MC5: True Testimonial. The film documents in great detail the revolutionary rock band The MC5. The stories in this film of the bands adventures are jaw dropping. My love for the band aside, its just a flat out fantastic documentary. Unfortunately, the doc was never officially released due to copyright issues. but you can often find promotional copies for sale on ebay. if you love a good rock doc, this is a necessity!

_ Food Inc. A documentary about the food industry that feels more like a horror film and makes you think twice about what you put in your plate.
_ Burden of Dreams. The Making of Fitzcarraldo. A Must-See for any Herzog Fans. Just like Hearts of Darkness, as epic as the movie it depicts.

That one was a lot better than I was expecting. Also it's sad his brother actually died not too long ago and I'm certain steroids were related to his demise.
The ones I've seen this year
Catfish- The ending was really out there , you could see it coming but it's more emotional and was handled the right way
Restrepo- It's not really the most exciting film but you have to feel for what these soldiers go through .

The incredible story of Pablo Escobar, the infamous boss of Colombia's Medellin drug cartel, told for the very first time by his son, Sebastian and his widow Maria Isabel Santos.
In Nicolas Entel's film, showing in the True Stories strand, Sebastian tells of his extraordinary childhood, growing up with a father he loved but whom he knew to be Colombia's enemy number one. He tells of times of extraordinary luxury and extravagance, and other times on the run, and Sebastian and his widow open the family vaults to share their private and long hidden archives. He also meets with the sons of the late Colombian justice minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla and the late presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán, both killed on orders from Escobar after confronting his cocaine cartel. The film follows Sebastian as he tries to break the cycle of revenge and assassination by seeking reconciliation with the sons of his father's victims.

_ When We Were Kings. "Rumble in the Jungle". Ali at his greatest.
Yeah, I saw that one at an art house cinema when it came out, I have never been to a boxing match, but I think I got a taste of what a good one must be like to get into at a live event.
I don't know what it was called , but I saw a doc years ago on the wrestler Mick Foley, who is a v interesting character, it was a great doc, I'll have to track that one down, ask my friend about it.
_ Hearts of Darkness. Almost as crazy as the film that birthed it.
Yeah, I have not seen it in yrs, I lost my vhs that had it on it, which is doubly annoying as it also had my only cut of a wee 'doc' i made myself, with assembled gurellia footage me and my friends took in school, sneaking the camera into lessons etc.:csad: A truly phenomenal doc, amazing that it was made, of that production in particular of course.
_ My Best Fiend. When Klaus met Werner.
I watched this one a lot, I love Herzog's voice, and how he tells the story of Kinski, 'you could have shifted the bathroom through a tennis-racket.' lol
When i played in a terrible techno band at the time this was released, i used to try and liven things up by copying Kinski on his 'Jesus tour', using a part of his speech and building it up before a song started. 'In dees juice...!'
Basically, if you want a good laugh, stick this doc on, I read Kinski's 'autobiography' yrs ago too, also v funny.
Probably my all time fav doc is the BBC 'Arena' doc on Philip K Dick, my friend and I used to watch that all the time and quote it back to each other, just fantastic interviews with people telling stories about PKD very well. The writer Thomas M Disch is v funny talking about seperating the man from the myth he built up, 'If he ate dog food...it's because he enjoyed it...and I can see him now...'poor phil k dick...look at this great writer reduced to eating dog food'...and then, and only then would he eat the dog food.' lol, ah, you need to hear his voice telling that one.
Some good stories told by his wives as well. It's on youtube, i will link it up later on.
The BBC Arena doc on the Rolling Stones from 89 was v good as well, '25times 5', with extensive interviews with all the Stones, good stuff from Keith of course.
The BBC also made a good one on Captain Beefheart, telling the story on how during rehersals for 'Trout Mask Replica', they lived in the middle of nowhere in a shack, and he basically held them captive there, lol, only allowing one person at a time to leave to make the journey for food and supplies. That is one helluva crazy album to be shacked up for months rehersing as well, I can't even listen to it once all the way through, lol, too crazy for me.
They also made a pretty good one on the writer Charles Bukowski, called 'The ordinary madness of CB', I only got to see this recently on youtube as i missed it when it was on back in the day.
and whatever you think of him, I think old Whatshisface's docs are v well made, 'Roger and Me' was his best one though I think...jeeziz i am having a brain fart with his name. you know who i mean.

I wish I could see it but it's blocked.
Another great gangster doc is "Mr. Untouchable", about one of the rivals of the character played by Denzel Washington in "American Gangster."
He is the one portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the film and I thought the doc was actually better than Ridley Scott's movie.
In a different genre, I also really enjoyed "the King of Kong" and "Grizzly Man". I like Herzog's docs as much as his movies in general.

I agree Michael Moore's docs are very well made.
And the other docs you mentioned sound pretty cool.
I remember a great (multi-part) documentary that I saw once on MTV, I forgot what it was called but it was about Heavy Metal.
My favorite part was the 1st segment mostly about Black Sabbath and the birth of Metal in Birmingham. It would make a great movie.
I also liked a couple of docs I saw about Charles Manson which titles I can't remember either. That story has been done on TV, but I wouldn't mind seeing a feature film of it either.

-"Man on a Wire": It's an intersting doc about a tight-rope walker, and how he walked across the Twin Towers.
-"Infamy": It's about street graffiti, which I knew nothing about, but it's an amazing doc.
-"Comedian": I practice stand-up, and this is a great doc on what goes into telling and crafting jokes.
-"It Might Get Loud": It's great if you like rock music.
-"Rising Son:Christian Hosoi": I used to skate when I was younger, and is about the fall of a great skater into drugs.
-"Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness": Just an interesting doc about people who explore urban underground.
-"When You're Strange": It's about the Doors.
-"LoudQUIETloud:A Film About The Pixies": It's about The Pixies reunion.
-"Rolling Stones: Stones in Exile": I like The Stones
-"I Am Comic": Again, it's a comedy doc about many things comedy. It's a solid watch.
-"Super High Me": Follows comedian Doug Benson who makes a satirical doc on Super Size Me, but about Marijuana.
-"Dogtown and Z-Boys": Shows the very beginning of street skating.
-"Restrepo": It's about a group who goes overseas to fight against the Taliban.
-"The Endless Summer": I like watching surfing movies, and this was one of the first ever made. It's a classic.
-"Fall From Grace": It's about The Phelps family, and what they're about. I now hate them.
-"Planet Earth"
-"The King of Kong": It's about a guy who goes for the worlds record in Donkey Kong, but has some bumps and scandals along the way.
Those are off the top of my head. If I can think of more, I'll post. Also, if you have Netflix, you can stream all of those, except for Comedian and Planet Earth. ;)

I'm not much of a documentary watcher but I just watched Exit Through The Gift Shop and that was incredible. I'm about to watch Following Sean soon.
In 1969, director Ralph Arlyck filmed an intimate conversation with 4-year-old Sean Farrell -- the son of free-spirited parents living in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district -- who talked openly about smoking pot and living with drug addicts. Thirty years later, Arlyck returns to San Francisco to find out what became of Sean and his family -- and in the process, reflects on his own strange journey that cuts across generations and cultures.

I found this documentary on youtube, I thought it was really powerful stuff. It's about Aokigahara forest, the second most popular suicide spot in the world. Up to 78 dead people are found every year and they have to put up anti-suicide signs to discurage people as well as people on "suicide patrol", the documentary follows one of the suicide patrol workers as he inspects the forest, some of the stuff he comes across is kinda disturbing, as well as his general downbeat commentary.
If you like the outlanding or macabre it's well worth a watch, fairly short too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CK1KdAha78
It's probably a good idea to set it to 720p and full screen though as for some reason the image is in a black box and has subs.

I watched NOLLYWOOD BABYLON this morning. It's about the movie industry in Nigeria. Hundreds of quickie movies are made yearly and put to video cd and sold on the streets. According to the documentary, the people of Nigeria hardly watch any European or American movies...they hardly go to theaters (only three theaters still open the capital city)...they watch the video cds at home. An interesting look at the entertainment industry of another country you don't hear a lot about.

heckler- a look at people who heckle and what it does to the comic, also after watching this searching on youtube for various heckled comedy sets and the various ways they were delt with was even more fascinating.
i am comic- story of what it takes to be a comic and the preparation, also about an older comic who left is getting back into standup and his journey to find his feet.
american the bill hicks story-really cool retelling of the comedians life and also lots of footage from his stand up.

metal: a headbanger's journey. this is a good doc about the history of metal. but after seeing until the light takes us i now see the whole picture about norwegian black metal. this clip shows the part of metal: a headbanger's journey about the black metal in norway.

it's funny that one of the guys talks about being a satanist in this clip. in until the light takes us it is clearly explained by varg that the 90's church burnings had nothing to do with satanism. they just wanted to preserve their heritage. the church and the media claimed it was satanist so that became popular belief. then a new generation became black metal satanist and completely missed the original message. which was to preserve their nordic heritage by worshiping the old gods and not the new god under christianity.
this was very fascinating movie (until the light takes us). there are some crazy people out there, lol. reality is sometimes weirder than anyone could write.
after watching that i needed a change of pace so i watched "once in a lifetime" the story of the new york cosmos. it's about the soccer team from the 70's. really an eye opener.

Glad you liked it! I agree that it really opens your mind about what the music itself is really all about and its quite funny to see how a misuderstanding (paganism -> satanism) with the help of media can evolve a genra and its perception.
There is another fairly interesting -- not as good or well made as Until the light... but its a worthy sit through -- about the band Mayhem called Pure F****ng Mayhem which also talks about that era in the 90s but its more about the band itself and its members (particular the singer Dead and his suicide).

Even though their methods are questionable-just like the rest of the people featured here-they seem somewhat sane.Unlike that master legend guy.If you look at the word'crazy'in the dictionary, you'll probably see his pic right beside it.
I also like how they handled the drunk driver situation. That martial art guy seems also somewhat sane. That said,it's only a matter of time before someone gets really hurt.
I wonder though...if one of their major reason for doing this is dressing up like superheroes, why not just go to Mann chinese theatre and be a street performer? like thos guys on 'confession of a superhero'and 'the reinactors'

I understand what they're trying to accomplish. My point is, like that policewoman said, they could've done that without the theatrics. In the long run, they will get themselves hurt. It's not a question of IF but WHEN.
Take what the NY initiatives does...the whole baiting criminals thing. While the idea itself is noble, what would they do if the muggers turn around and point a gun at them?the idea of doing something for the community is in itself is great, but you gotta admit that doing that while dressing like a cartoon character made the whole thing questionable. How can it be a selfless act when at the same time you call attention to yourself by dressing like that, you know what i mean?
By the way..have you seen confession of a superhero and the reinactors?

there were some people who wouldn't go on film, they wanted to remain anonymous. some of these people also probably use the personae just to do charity so if it helps them to do it it's not a problem. but you are right about the ones trying to fight crime, i am waiting to hear about one of those guys from the park getting stabbed or shot. like the cameraman.

As much as I respect Bill Hicks for his outlook on comedy, his material really hasn't aged as well, as say, George Carlin. Some of it is really good, but some of it is just rants, with absolutely no punch lines. He's a mixed bag, IMO. I know people who adore him, and I also know people who totally hate him. I remember seeing 2 docs a long time ago before I even knew what a documentary was. Both about the martial arts action stars. One was top fighter the other cinema of vengeance or maybe it was called Kung Fu fighter can't remember. It had a who's who of martial artist old and new at that time. Talked about the progression from traditional kung Fu to muscle bound to lean real looking fighter types to fantastical styles in cinema. Also comedic and just raw and brutal. It had the full spectrum. The other spoke about each individual martial arts actor and the following generation. What each one brought to the genre.

I just finished watching Bobby Fischer Against the World, very interesting documentary about one of the famous world chess champions and are usually considered one of the best chess player of all time. I don't think it's the first documentary to dealt about him but nevertheless it paints a fascinating view on a man's life and his inner struggle and who really had nothing to live for than chess itself.
The documentary took an unexpected turn at the last act because Fischer himself did that in his life, at least it did for me since I didn't really pay any attention to the man before this. Still though very gripping, very well-put and it's not important whether you like chess beforehand since it's easy to delve in.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, or if it is more of a european based interest. But last years 'Senna' film, about the ill fated Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna who tragically died at the height of his career, arguably one of the greatest drivers of all time.
And Louis Theroux has done some interesting documentaries, ranging from films about Religious cults, Gansta Rap, etc.
Also 'Ross Kemp on gangs' is great, where he travels all over the world and meets members from Crips, to Bloods, to White Power movements, and everything in between, some tense interviews with some of the high level leaders in in various gangs is brilliant.

Just saw Room 237 and ... oh my god *sigh*
We have 1 ˝ hours of voices talking over slow pans of the scenes from the movie, zoom-ins and all that, as we are drowned out with various conspiracy theories, both large and small. The three large raised is that the film is 1) an allegory of the Holocaust, 2) it is a confession that Kubrick was involved in faking the moon landing, and 3) that the film is about Americans' extermination of the Indians. Then there's also a lot of little trivia things that are much more interesting than the big three, for example when you see the blue print of the hotel and how impossible some appearances in the rooms are, or how Danny's route on his bike is and where he goes.
Some times you will sit and shake your head and laugh how stupid some theories are, other times you will sit and actually agree with them haha.
A very entertaining "documentary" (if one can call it that). Recommended for fans of Kubrick, conspiracy theories, film-thematics, cinematography, and stuff like that!
