View Full Version : So, what about Happy Hogan?
If Favreau is out as director, I imagine he'll be out as Happy too.
Any thoughts on the role? Re-cast? Maybe he won't even be included?

Happy died on the way back to his home planet.

TONY: Dead. Butt cancer.

Simple. Write him out.
Set the story and set of circumstances in a way that makes him being around impossible. It's not like Happy and Pepper are in every issue of the comic.
The only things that are required are:
Tony
The Suit
Jarvis
Great Story
&
Flawless execution

U don't even have to write him out . Just don't write him in.

I'd add Pepper to that list and a great villain (Mandarin) and not waste him like they did Whiplash.
Things they could and probably should do without
Happy
War Machine
Too many damn jokes

Why can't he be in the film as an actor just because he stepped down as director?
Was he fired?

it would be nice if he made an appearance, but i dont think anybody would really miss him if hes not in the third movie

No, he quit, but it would still probably be inappropriate all the same.

Happy didn't appear in the comic for dozens of issues. For the whole Michellinie/ Layton run I don't think he appeared.

No real reason he can't do a couple days unless the shooting schedules for IM3 and Magic Kingdom are directly synced up or something.

Since they are both Disney projects I am sure something can be worked out - there's no reason he would not be there as an actor

I think it'll be a good gauge for whether the split was amicable between him & Marvel, or whether the IM2 shoot really was as bad as people have speculated.

Well, it's not as simple as having just a couple of days available. In both films, Favs had to really slim down to play the role. He tends to let himself go more when he's not working as an actor, I guess. So He'd need preperation to do it and I don't know if it would be worth it for a small cameo role(which is what Happy has been and should remain). So unless Favs has changed his eating habits and now keeps up the slimmer look already, I doubt we'll see him as Happy.

I dont think Happy is needed in the stories that they've been telling so far so they should leave this character out.

He is fairly superfluous as a character so far. This doesn't mean he can't get a bigger part in future iterations.

Why can't he be in the movie? Favreau is still acting in supporting roles all the time. This is right up his alley. It'd be an easy payday for him without having the stress of the entire movie and experience being on his shoulders.

A funny cameo will be good. If Favs - like he said - he's still collaborating and friends of Marvel, isn't difficult.

I felt anytime the character was on screen in IM2 it was really cheesy and corny, hoping they just write him out for this one. or RE cast but make reduce his role greatly. Keep it to how it was in IM 1

Interesting. The article was a little vague on if he'd actually come back to act as Hogan. The response more seems like "I can't wait to watch it and see what they do with it."
I wonder if Favreau was intentionally trying to give a misleading or vague answer.

I'm sure Favs would come back for the role, he loves the universe too much to not come back (at least I hope so). It'd say something about his integrity as an actor.
(yup, totally went there).

I'm more hoping that he at least stays on as a producer for IM3. I know he's executive producing Avengers.

I don't think it really matters. I think his acting appearance may be improved when he's not also the director (that way it's not the director putting himself into the movie) but at the same time Happy as a character is not really needed in this Iron Man-mythos. I say have Pepper and Rhodey as supporting cast but no one else. No Coulson, Fury, Hill or Avengers either please. Make it about Iron Man.
As for villains, I hope for Mandarin but I can see why it's difficult with all the mystical stuff all of a sudden. Just don't have another Armoured-up villain. So that rules out Titanium Man or Crimson Dynamo. Blizzard and Boomerang is kinda goofy maybe.
Living Laser is a character I'm hoping for as a powerful servant of whoever the main villain is, or as the main villain himself but then with a tweaked personality and grand ambitions. I could also picture Melter, but then his powers should be slightly different but with the same core idea.
Or AIM, they could be simply awesome as villain organization.
But most of all, I'm crossing my fingers: Go Mandarin.

But how much pull will he have as a producer? Tim Burton was a producer for Batman Forever but ya wouldnt know he had anything to do with the movie.

The Air Force dude in the first movie wasn't really needed for the second one but they brought him back anyway.

I agree he was not needed in a sequel, but I think he could fill an important role in the world of Tony Stark in the third movie. So I say, have him there but use him well.

I'd rather not see a re-cast. if Favreau's not interested/available, put happy on vacation, sick leave, something.. marvel's already lost terrance howard, ed norton, due to "hiccups" in negotiations.. more musical chairs in casting doesn't help..

Agreed. I think Happy was too corny in Iron Man 2 anyway.

I thought Favreau said he wasn't directing Avengers because of Magic Kingdom. I didn't think that kept him from doing Iron Man 3. I guess it does, but if he stays a producer of Iron Man 3 like he is on the Avengers he might take a couple of days and do a cameo. No reason he wouldn't he doesn't need to be in the whole film.
Question is how will the do Iron Man 3 after the Avengers? Given that they seem to be taking on the Ultimate take on Avengers and having them be a team assmbled by Shield. Will Tony be allowed to run around and do hiw own thing now that he has to answer to Fury?

Don't care, his role in IM2 was way to big anyway. In the first movie, he was hardly noticeable, which was fine.

THR confirmed his return (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/iron-man-3-jon-favreau-avengers-329350), acting-wise, as Happy for Iron Man 3. Not just the Twitter pic, although I'm surprised he's already here in NC...

They're already doing costume fittings so I'd think he'd need to be there. Plus, he's a producer on the movie still and the filming is supposedly starting soon or already has so a couple more good reasons to be down there.

He's going to have to lose weight again before he starts on the movie so a costume fitting at this point doesn't make much sense
