Hell yeah, the energy storm in the chest, and the light crackling out of the ring and up his arm looks intense. The darker black areas really help it pop.
And the mask has more form but still looking like a construct that conforms to the shape of his eyes, as it should. This shouldn't be some stiff plastic mask, but one that changes with his expression, and they nailed it.
Thank goodness this isn’t some redundant sewn together, rubber costume that looks like everything else out there. It’s freakin unique in every way, and really alive as it should be.
And this is just his, every Corps member has his own unique look.

If Oa and the rest of the VFX delivers, I may finally stop b---hing about Sony ImageWorks. All these reports sound promising, but I'm still going to hold caution simply because aiming to be the next Star Wars is quite a challenge and could easily fall flat.

IGN's description of the footage: http://movies.ign.com/articles/115/1158930p1.html

The hottest movie panel on WonderCon's opening day was the presentation for Green Lantern. The Warner Bros. panel included new footage from the DC Comics adaptation and appearances by stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard.

Fans gathered inside the Esplanade Ballroom of the Moscone Center watched with rapt attention as the Green Lantern footage was screened. Here's the breakdown of the series of scenes that were shown (SPOILER WARNING):

It began with a shot of space and Abin Sur's ship with a subtitle letting us know what quadrant it's in. Inside the ship, Abin-Sur is communicating with a holographic projection of Sinestro when the ship comes under attack from Parallax. Abin-Sur valiantly wards off Parallax, a monstrous, almost formless creature of energy, but must ultimately flee his vessel via escape pod. Abin-Sur sets course for the nearest life-sustaining planet in the hopes of continuing his original mission: to find another deserving being to join the Green Lantern Corps.

His ship's crash-landing on Earth is witnessed by test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who rushes to the glowing wreckage to discover the mortally wounded Abin-Sur. The dying alien gives the confused Hal his ring and tells him to recite the oath before dying.

Back in his apartment, Hal has the green lantern/power battery sitting on his coffee table where, amusingly, he tries reciting the oath ... but what's the oath? He was never told, so he starts a modified version of the Pledge of Allegiance (to the lantern rather than the flag) when suddenly the power battery bursts to life. Hal's eyes glow green as he begins to recite the Green Lantern's oath. ("In brightest day ..." you know the rest.) The battery and ring have formed some sort of psychic bond with Hal, imparting information to him.

Then the ring's power envelops him in a green cloud and he soars into space, past astronauts on a spacewalk, through the cosmos and finally to Oa, the homeworld of the Green Lantern Corps. There Hal, garbed in the green energy "uniform" and mask of a Lantern, is met by Tomar-Re (whose voice was done by Geoffrey Rush; yes, he's already recorded his lines). Tomar-Re will serve as his first mentor in the ways of the Corps.

From there, Tomar-Re and Hal hover down to an amphitheater carved out of rock to witness Sinestro, now the greatest of the Lanterns following Abin-Sur's death, address the troops. His speech is about the coming doom that is Parallax and, at the end of the speech, the Lanterns let loose their battle cry of "The Corps!" as the green light of their collective ring projections beam off Oa and into space.

They then showed a new trailer, which will be attached to the May release of Thor. This trailer showed a lot more special effects, action and Oa awesomeness, including much more of a mutated Hector Hammond. My favorite bit from the trailer was Hal using his power ring to create badass .50 caliber guns out of green energy and then letting loose on his off-screen enemy.

So what did I think of the new Green Lantern footage? Check out the embedded video below for my reaction.

io9 gives some details as well...

Green Lantern isn’t a comedy, Ryan Reynolds promises. And intense new footage proves it!

Charlie Jane Anders (http://io9.com/people/charliejane/) — Warner Bros.' Green Lantern had a lot to prove going into Wondercon, after a bit of a fan backlash against the movie's first trailer and some lackluster promo images. So did the emerald champion win some cred tonight?

Judging from the reaction of the capacity crowd in the Moscone Center's ballroom, it seemed like the answer was yes. We saw some footage, we got to talk to stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, and we discovered that Green Lantern may not be as much of a zany comedy as the first trailer made it appear.

(Oh, and these images are screencaps from the earlier trailer. Sorry we don't have any images from the new footage.)

First, the footage: It was the same stuff shown at Cinemacon the other day in Las Vegas. It starts with the caption "Sector 2814." And we see the Green Lantern warrior Abin Sur in his spaceship, controlling a GUI the same as Microsoft's Zune. And Abin Sur talks to Sinestro about his mission to the planet Ventara – but Sinestro tells him the mission is cancelled, because Ventara has been destroyed. Abin Sur is shocked: "Ventara's dead? The planet's inhabitants?" It's just like that other planet, Sinestro says. Sinestro has demanded an audience with the Guardians, the Lanterns' alien masters.

A second later, the conference is interrupted – there's an alarm and the wall of Abin Sur's spaceship blows up. He's being attacked by a scowling yellow mouth. Abin Sur shoots energy from his ring, in a sort of pew-pew-pew fashion, but he's forced to beat a retreat and get into an escape pod. He's mortally injured, and he sends a last message saying he's heading for the nearest planet and launching the selection process for his replacement.

Then we see Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) being swept in a green energy bubble over to where Abin Sur's spaceship is crashed at the water's edge. Hal is freaked out to find a pink alien in a see-through spaceship, especially when he finds out that the alien is dying. He wants to get the alien to a hospital where they can give him a transfusion of "purple blood." Abin Sur asks Hal his name and says the lantern has chosen him. Abin tells Hal to take his ring and the lantern in his ship, and say the oath and touch the ring to the lantern. Hal keeps begging Abin Sur to breathe, but Abin Sur dies and his chest light goes out. "Aw, come on," Hal says.

Then we see Hal in his apartment, looking at the lantern and trying to figure out the mysterious oath he's supposed to say. "Because everybody knows the oath, we used to sing it in camp," he quips. He tries: "I, Hal Jordan, do solemnly swear to pledge allegiance to a lantern, from a dying purple alien in a swamp." The lantern zaps him with a green energy beam and he's thrown backwards. Then suddenly he knows the oath – looking into the green light, he says the oath super intensely.

Then Hal is flying through space in a ball of green energy, past the International Space Station and two astonished astronauts. He goes through a wormhole and then he's approaching the planet Oa, where green energy beams are zapping out into space. Now he has the uniform and the mask on, and he starts posing and preening, until the fish-headed alien Tomar-Re asks him if he's done showing off. The mask disappears, because Hal doesn't need to protect his identity here.

Hal is astonished that he can understand alien languages, and he also knows all about Tomar-Re's race, because the ring gives him a working knowledge base. "In truth, we were curious. The process has never been attempted on a species as young as humans before," says Tomar-Re. "You are the first to be chosen. I've been sent to welcome you here."

Next, there's a huge sweeping vista of Oa and we see the power battery and a huge green beam shooting into the sky. Sinestro is addressing a huge crowd of alien Green Lantern Corps. Members, including many fan favorites. (We only got a glimpse of them and it was too quick to make note of exactly ones which showed up.)

Sinestro makes a speech:

Lanterns, I've called you here to this unprecedented gathering, because we face an unprecedented danger. An enemy called Parallax that we don't fully understand. We do know it's powerful enough to destroy entire civilizations. Powerful enough to defeat even Abin Sur, our finest warrior. Alone, we are vulnerable. United, we are still invincible. We have never been been defeated. Will we be defeated now? It was for this moment that we were created. I don't need to tell you your duty. I don't need to tell you who we are.

And everybody chants: "We are the Corps! We are the Corps! We are the Corps!" And they all shoot their green energy beams up into space as one.

Then we saw a few snippets of the new trailer, including a few scenes that weren't in the earlier trailer – like Hal Jordan being zapped by yellow energy, to the point where he's almost crucified. And supervillain Hector Hammond, with his grossly swollen head, puts on Hal Jordan's ring! And we see Hal Jordan shooting a machine gun made by his ring.

During the question-and-answer session after the footage, Blake Lively (Carol Ferris) talked a bit about whether she'll get to play the villain Star Sapphire in a sequel. "The only thing that's a little more daunting is the outfit," said Lively. "Maybe they could put a little more material on, it's pretty daunting."

Lively also clarified the relationship between Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris:

Hal and Carol are rivals, they're both fighter pilots. In the air, they go neck and neck. He works for her in this aviation company and he's completely irresponsible, he crashes millions of dollars of hardware.

Also in the Q&A during the panel, someone asked whether the villain Atrocitus might show up in this movie, and producer Geoff Johns, who's written a lot of the comics. Johns said Atrocitus is "not in this one," putting a lot of emphasis on the words "this one," and adding that that might be construed as a hint.

Ryan Reynolds joked that to prepare to look good in this film, he ate a diet of nothing but orphans and bench-pressed live pandas.
During the roundtable interviews after the panel, Reynolds said that he has some ring constructs that are his favorites in the film, but the machine-gun construct wasn't necessarily one of them. The coolest ring constructs, Reynolds hinted, are ones we haven't seen yet.

And Reynolds told reporters in the roundtable that if they are lucky enough to make another Green Lantern film, they'll have a huge advantage. They won't need to introduce Green Lantern from scratch and explain all about the ring and the Corps. And they won't need to do as much pre-production and spending as much time trying to figure out how to make these things look cool.

And if they do make a sequel, Reynolds says he already knows where the story will go. It's set in stone already. And once you've seen the end of this movie, you'll know where the story is going too.

A few other points that Reynolds stressed:

Hal Jordan is sort of a Han Solo character, mixed with Chuck Yeager
The technology to do Green Lantern right only recently existed, but Reynolds felt really confident that Warner Bros. would do this right, on the strength of Harry Potter and other films. A lot of the Lord of the Rings crew worked on the Lantern effects.
The big advantage of Green Lantern over other superhero origin stories is that the the story doesn't start in the third act, like the other films.
Reynolds spent a lot of time at an Air Force base in Louisiana, where they were filming the movie, and seeing what the culture of fighter pilots is like. "I come from a family of cops, there's an unspoken code there that's going on and these guys have it," says Reynolds.
The humor in the film comes out of the situation and isn't overwhelming – Reynolds said that you need a bit of levity here and there so that mainstream audiences can deal with the idea of a regular guy being zapped into another galaxy to an alien planet full of weird creatures. But most of the heavy comedy in the film is stuff we've already seen in the first trailer, because those were the Earthbound scenes that were done in time for that trailer. Once Hal is "humbled by the gift" of the power ring, he stops being so "arrogant and cocky," Reynolds told reporters, and that means less jokiness.

Also, Blake Lively told reporters that director Martin Campbell really took the responsibility of bringing this story to life seriously, without looking too goofy. "He's a guy with a magic ring and a magic lamp," she said. "You have to tell this story well."

Uh oh, Marvel fans are getting nervous due to their recent hate of all the great buzz coming from Green Lantern the last few days and especially today.

Plenty of the industry media have seen footage of GL and their reports are that the movie looks amazing. And they're still not done with the CGI.
Here's hoping the GL trailer isn't the best thing about the Thor movie. LOL!

The suit looks awesome! Big time improvement from what we saw months ago.

The poster is sweet also! Glad the marketing is finally starting to get pushed out. Can't wait to see a live action Green Lantern film for the first time! :hal:

if they were to air it on TV they should find a high rated show like dancing with the stars or whatever and promote the episode of having an "exclusive sneak peak at this summers biggest movie event" sort of deal.

Yep. I agree and the NCAA Hoops Final Four starts tomorrow and the during the title game on Monday.

Big Bang Theory also and on the Sci Fi Channel and Discovery Channel and ESPN.

they could actually do an episode of big bang theory centering on the idea of extremist fanboy internet mentality which would include the two dudes arguing over the quality of the first green lantern trailer and end with them being exposed to this new footage (which we'd all see) and then they'd geek out like school girls on prom night.

i await my royalty check.

:hal:

What's all this Marvel fans vs DC fans nonsense? So the only people disappointed with what has been seen of GL so far are just Marvel fanboys, is that what you are saying? Please tell me you're not older than 16?

Anyway the descriptions sound great. I reserve judgement until i see the trailer myself though.

But i must say again... the new poster is brilliant.

I just want to see the footage.

Not reading a single description just to keep it fresh but I'm glad that the feedback has been incredibly positive from the attendees at WonderCon who I trust far more than those at CinemaCon.

I mean someone said the ring constructs are the new lightsabers? Maybe that guy is swimming in hyperbole or maybe not. Either way it sounds great.

IGN's description of the footage: http://movies.ign.com/articles/115/1158930p1.html

This trailer showed a lot more special effects, action and Oa awesomeness, including much more of a mutated Hector Hammond. My favorite bit from the trailer was Hal using his power ring to create badass .50 caliber guns out of green energy and then letting loose on his off-screen enemy.

Sweet, I've wanted to see more of mutated Hector Hammond since the first trailer was released :woot:.

Just the thought of the 50 caliber gun constructs has gotten me 3 time more excited for the film , and did he create one 50 cal. gun or multiple guns? I know it say "guns", but I just wanna make sure that's correct.

From a marketing stand point, I think it would be wise to release the footage. That way they, more-or-less, would be equal to the other comic-based films coming out this year as far as non-repeated footage that has been released goes. With all the buzz and more in depth details from Hitfix and io9, I don't see why they wouldn't release it.

dnno1
04-02-2011, 10:04 AM
Well if I had something better, I would release that instead, but since it looks like what they showed at both CinemaCon and WonderCon was a hit, they may as well show the 4 minute trailer.

De Line confirms, footage will be (possible) released today!!:

Will footage be put on Apple in the near future? “I believe tomorrow possibly there would be some version of what we saw here today that may be 4 minutes. Today’s was 9:55 [minutes long], tomorrow’s I think is 4. It’ll go out online.”http://collider.com/donald-de-line-interview-green-lantern/83733/

When he wills the ring to become the Green Lantern, and he can do that through the willpower to create this suit and go into his powers, green energy from the inside out creates this suit. And he is, when he’s brought to Oa for the first time, they map his body, he’s the first human being to be a green lantern. So they don’t really know what he’s made of, so we have this really cool sequence where they dissect and scan Hal Jordan and the ring creates this suit for the first time for a human being.”
4:33 Addresses rumors that Michael Clarke Duncan will voice Kilowog. Says they’ve talked about him “very very seriously” but they haven’t made their final decision on the voice of Kilowog yet. Says there won’t be any more big names announced for the cast.

One thing though, the Oath comes across kinda corny. It works in the comics, it doesn't seem out of place. But i genuinely do fear that people who don't have any time for superhero comics, the majority of the audience, will find it a bit cheesy and corny.

One thing though, the Oath comes across kinda corny. It works in the comics, it doesn't seem out of place. But i genuinely do fear that people who don't have any time for superhero comics, the majority of the audience, will find it a bit cheesy and corny.

Other than that, i'm impressed.Agreed. I'm afraid that the post-Nolan general audience is too serious for the oath.

Looks like they ditched playing up trying to mimic the IRON MAN tone this time.

My reaction is mixed. I think some things like good but some of it looks bad. A lot of the visuals still look really cheap and unfinished. The costumes looked photoshopped and painted on. I don't like how Tomar and Kilowog look in live action.

Contructs and the new interpretation of Parallax look OK I guess. What I liked about old sci-fi movies is that sometimes I thought I could actually reach out and grab or touch like things like the spaceships. I don't get that feeling here.

Hopefully I won't have to be forced to watch the movie in ******, dark, converted 3D which is terrible (CoTT, Green Hornet).

They still should've had a trailer like this released last year.

The visuals were rushed and forcing another 3D conversion was a horrible choice.

Audiences have already gotten wise to the 3D gimmick. See The Last Airbender, Green Hornet, and Piranha 3D and numerous others.

Now people are comparing which looks more expensive , anyways you can't really compare a film about a street level hero like Cap to a GL film.

How a film looks is important. TDK looked like it was made for twice the money it actually cost.

It shows a level of quality.

Take the trio of new epic series on cable. Game of Thrones, Camelot and Borgias. A couple of minutes of GoT footage shows you the time, care and quality craftsmanship that has gone into it, especially in comparison to the other two.

The only way this footage looks more expensive than the Thor and Cap footage is simply because there is about a billion more SFX shots in it.

The Asgard shown in Thors trailer is the city of Asgard, you can hardly compare that to a "planet".

Just the basics here, but a lot of the cosmic element of Thor looks like it is shot in a corridor. The big hammer smash and hammer toss shows this painfully.

Now look at Sinestro in the Amphitheater.

But, seriously, if you don't agree, why do you care so much? Personally, going to watch and hopefully enjoy all three.
