Exactly! - One of the (many) positives about having the Skrulls involved is the notion that Widow & Hawkeye go on a mass killing spree and the film doesn't have to get an R-rating because of it! - Killing aliens isn't frowned upon by the MPAA :)

I really think being directed by Whedon is going to pay dividends for the character. Even people who didn't like her in Iron Man 2 will hopefully like her with Whedon at the helm.

I took a nap earlier and had this dream that I was somewhere where Whedon was filming the Avengers. I wasn't expecting to see them, but out of a car emerged Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders and two others that I can't remember - possibly Clark Gregg and possibly one of them might've been Whedon. The awesome thing about the dream was that, as I stood there and Scarlett passed me by, she looked my way and smiled at me. Not just a slight smile but a beaming smile like in one of those photos above. For some reason she still seemed to have blonde hair though. I'm not sure I actually knew it was her until she looked at me, but I was glad she acknowledged me.

I tried to follow to see what they were filming, but it looked like they were just having a meeting.

Reminds me of before Spider-Man 2 when people wanted Alfred Molina's Otto Octavius to have a German accent because Marvel had give him one in the cartoons.

My two-penny's is that I've no problem with the American accent. It makes sense to me.

Being that Russia's her country of origin, of course Natasha was naturally going to have a Russian accent, but as stated before, one could argue that to be a successful spy she's had to make considerable effort to get rid of every trace of that accent. I see two possible outcomes from this; either a) she still has her Russian accent but is easily able to hide it or b) she has hidden it so much over the years that her accent has actually changed to the point that her natural accent is now an American one (which does happen).

In any case, if for all these years she's had an American accent in the comics, isnt it more a case of anyone who thinks she has a Russian accent simply reading 'Russian Spy' and just assuming that she must have a Russian accent?

Apparently they were looking into a solo film forth Black Widow. But I think they'll have to wait till the Avengers hits the big screen or at least until they finish filming.

That means Johansson would be reprising her role. Let's hope she does a fantastic job! I'm going to be optimistic about her casting and pin down her performance in Iron Man to some not-to-fantastic writing. Though she definitely had her moments. Personally, it’s not about her being a female member, but the fact that based on what we saw of her in “Iron Man 2” alone, she’s not really an interesting character to see on screen, especially when compared to some of the other female leads that I’ve seen in the MCU. But I do agree on one thing, that they shouldn’t run risk on having her hook up with someone on the group because she’s the biggest female lead in the film so far, but really, she only has like one option (Hawkeye) since all of the other Avengers are spoken for physically or emotionally.

I don't think it's that she's being played down per se. It's that she isn't part of the big three in the first place, and she isn't iconic like the Hulk. Had this been a Justice League movie and she was somehow playing Wonder Woman (which I hope she never does), then her character would've had just as much action as the rest and she would've been far more central a character to the storyline. She can't expect Black Widow to be in the spotlight as much as Iron Man, Cap and Thor, and then Hulk.

I think it's BS. How can she be demanding more action scenes now that principal photography has ended? There is no possibility of reassembling the cast and crew (and sets) just for that.

As for the love interest part, Natasha started her existence as Clint's lover, so that's part of her back story.

Now I wouldn't oppose a Black Widow romance in the movie, but I also don't want them to force just to make the movie more appealing to the women folk and what not. And studio execs often demand lame romances.

I know that there are reshoots, but I just don't think they would add in major action sequences after the fact. That would entail a lot of additional prep and work, with stunt coordinators and the FX department, etc. Budgetary considerations alone would probably nix that sort of thing.

I do hope that the Black Widow and Hawkeye won't be slighted in terms of their importance to the film, but the size of the cast will influence that. There are always sequels or spin-offs in which the characters can be developed further.

It would be fine with me if the Widow and Hawkeye started out together because that fits with their history. However, the Banner thing strikes me as ludicrous and a really bad idea. As you said, Bruce's relationship with Betty has been firmly established and it would be wrong to destroy that for some petty plot twist. Even if they never do another Hulk movie, they can still leave that relationship to be explored and perhaps resolved in further sequels of The Avengers. There is no need to introduce a manufactured love affair to increase the tension between the characters.

Besides, Tony is likelier to come on to Natasha, anyway. He probably (probably) wouldn't cheat on Pepper, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't flirt wildly just for the hell of it.

"Action scenes" do not automatically mean "fight scenes."
You play to your character's strengths; I'm sure Joss Whedon realizes that quite well. Widow is what? A spy. So give her espionage scenes. Let her do some key infiltrations in the enemy camp, get her 007 on. It makes her more valuable to the team, gives ScarJo something to do, and those of us with a thing for redheads (raises hands) some more Happy Time with my favorite Russkie.

Indeed; what's interesting is that we get tiny snippets of this new dynamic from not only this scene, but from the one that had premiered from the D23 expo where we hear on how Banner and BW exchange looks with each other when Loki mentions on how the cage inside the Hellcarrier was originally built for the Hulk.

And if we go by the leaked two pages from the screenplay, where the BW is trying to calm Banner down as he's transforming; yep sounds all good for me and it may give the BW more layers as a character than IM2 did for me personally.

Hollywood makes a lot of movies. But a lot more movies never get made. For a while there was going to be a Black Widow movie, and now writer David Hayter explained why this project never made it off the ground.

"Unfortunately, as I was coming up on the final draft, a number of female vigilante movies came out,” he said in an interview posted at Blastr. “We had 'Tomb Raider' and 'Kill Bill,' which were the ones that worked, but then we had 'BloodRayne' and 'Ultraviolet' and 'Aeon Flux.'"

Hollywood felt that there were too many similar movies coming out to want to back the project, according to Hayter, who was understandably upset after all of his hard work and dedication.

"I accepted their logic in terms of the saturation of the marketplace, but it was pretty painful,” he said. “I had not only invested a lot of time in that movie, but I had also named my daughter . . . Natasha."

Hayter told a few details about his script, which would apparently take place in post-Soviet Russia and involve nukes and sanitariums.

Black Widow did get into the “Iron Man” movie franchise and will be in the upcoming “The Avengers.” In fact, “The Avengers” may be a key to getting Black Widow her own movie in the future, so maybe Hayter — and Hollywood — can still bring the iconic heroine to the big screen on her own. Only time will tell on that one.

I wish her stingers were gold in the film but it's not really that big of a deal, I can't wait to see her use them in the film.

The only potential for a romantic subplot I see in this movie is Black Widow/Hawkeye (which is straight from the comics, too), as every other Avenger has a love interest in their own movie series (Although Sif should be the love interest in the Thor movies). The only real potential is Bruce Banner, and that's only because there may never be another Hulk movie, which is a damn shame. I liked Liv Tyler in the role.

That was one of the best fight scenes in the movie, I really wish they would've kept Black Widow with long hair in the Avengers.
