The Amazing Spider-Man is Looking for a Red-Head
Are you an attractive, female red-headed teen with dreams of appearing on the big screen next summer in Marc Webb'shttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/165111--the-amazing-spider-man-is-looking-for-a-red-head#) The Amazing Spider-Man (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=46192)?
Face it tiger, you've just hit the jackpot.
SuperHeroHype has learned that a casting call has gone out for that very part under the film's secret title, "Fiona's Tale." The exact description calls for an, "actress to portray beautiful red-headed teenage girl for featured background...(18+ only)". Interested candidates are encouraged to apply at FTextras@gmail.com (FTextras@gmail.com) This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Naturally, the notion of a beautiful red-head being cast in Spider-Man instantly brings to mind the role of Mary Jane Watson, though the odds of casting such a part with a background actress are unlikely at best, especially if the plan is to introduce MJ later in the rebooted series. Still, the part could be a inside joke, a tease of her future appearance or, just as likely, a completely unrelated character. Let the speculation commence!
The film, which stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field, resumes shooting this week in New York Cityhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/165111--the-amazing-spider-man-is-looking-for-a-red-head#) and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

Probably not MJ. They wouldn't have some rando play her and then have to recast for the sequel.

Kind of weird then, that they are specifically asking for a red head. Maybe they don't care to get a big name since she might only have one scene.

Wasn't MJ's face hidden in the first couple of issues she appeared in?? Maybe they want to do something similar, thus cast someone unknown like some kind of placeholder, in order to replace her in a future sequel with known actress.
I think we'll see MJ only from behind or (like in the comics) with her face hidden :)
Sebastos

Considering it's for a "featured backround", I think we'll just see a brief glimpse of MJ.

Bingo. They're specifically asking for a redheaded teen and mention it's a featured background appearance.
Since they won't have to worry about casting until a presumed sequel, a placeholder is all they need. Some choice angles and clever placement would mirror the first few appearances MJ had. An absolute tease.
This would have worked better if they secretly cast the role. That way her appearance is all the more surprising, and we'd be blown away if the girl was stunningly attractive.
GoblinWhirlwind
04-12-2011, 03:12 PM
I guess if they just want a redhead visible, this would work. Still seems like a weird way to cast MJ... just go ahead with a real actress. Unless they don't wanna contract one with only a minute or two screentime in the first movie.

Because Hollywood is still under the impression that people still see films because it has a "big name draw." While that can be true in a few cases (Johnny Depp), it is not universal. At this point, people will settle for a film actually being good/entertaining. Too bad that in that regard, this year is off to a terrible start.
With that said, I would love to see an unknown. Then again, I wouldn't mind seeing a name either. If they weren't so old, I would love to see Christina Hendricks or Laura Prepon. Given the age requirements, I'd vote for Rachel Hurd Wood. If she has even a modicum of her uncle's ability to feign an American accent, she would be a fantastic choice.

They're too literal minded to understand that the comic book illustrations are a MALE interpretation of how the female form should look, which in no way represents how any woman in the real world actually looks (except for all airbrushed pics of said actress dressed scantily as well as all the lingerie model pictures that get posted).
Gotta love the two-faced fanboys calling for a great story, script and characters all the while decrying the lead actress 'cause she has a butter face or her boobs aren't big enough.

We don't need to set her up. Maybe a mention of a friend's niece Aunt May would like Peter to meet but that's it. When she comes in, she should be in the movie all the way.
100% with you on this!
Jesus, am I the only one who doesn't want that line and scene to happen with MJ? It's fine in the comics, on film to end on that or include it will seem too much and just scream fan service. It's too much.
I HOPE YOU ALL ROT AND DIE IN HELL!!! :cmad:
I really want the end of the movie to have Peter and Aunt May at home when suddenly the doorbell rings. Aunt May says how it's that nice girl from next door, Peter rolls his eyes and answers the door. The music picks up as he swings the front door open, camera still on Peter's face. His jaw drops as we hear MJ say her famous line. Shot of MJ. Cut to credits with main theme.
THAT'S my fantasy ending.

I hope it happens too as socool has put it, but not at the end of this one. I say not until after Gwen dies. I know in the comics it occurred in between going out periods with Pete and Gwen, but in the timeframe of a film, I don' think the on again/off again thing would gel well.
In saying that though, having Mary Jane be there for Pete after Gwen's death would be nice to have. It's just having a situation where Mary Jane would show up in such a manner without having Pete and Gwen separated is hard to imagine. It's probably one of her big defining moments so it has to be present somehow.

Well, if they do the Gwen's death storyline, MJ should be there. In the comics, Peter always favored Gwen because she wasn't the party girl MJ was. She was Peter Parker's perfect girl. But when Gwen died, and he saw tears in MJ's eyes, he realized that MJ wasn't JUST a party girl.
That is a very smart thing for them to put in the story. Helps character development.

Seeing as this whole MJ thing cropped up again, I figured I'd repost a quick tidbit I wrote back in November, before we really knew much (or at least as much as we do now). Obviously, the big problem with it would be getting an MJ so early in terms of filming a sequel, but what the hell, right? :woot:
Anyhow, this is what I said:
On topic, I'd say that, depending on how the reboot ends, it might be cool to see MJ appear in the very last scene. I know it's a bunch of ifs, but seeing as we know next to nothing about the film, here's me speculating/spitballing for fun ideas:
Let's say that the film ends on a high note. Huge final battle, villain is defeated, Spidey is triumphant and Peter and Gwen are finally solid in their relationship (their relationship can start earlier, with Peter's complicated life as Spidey acting as an interjectory problem, or their relationship can fully bloom towards the end).
And so, Gwen and Pete are hanging out at Pete's house, and the doorbell rings. Aunt May answers, and calls Peter to the front door to meet the new neighbour. Peter leaves Gwen for a second and approaches the front door. He stops, his jaw drops only slightly, and we get a bit of a vacant stare. Awkward pause and he finally comes to his senses and says "Hi." We cut to a very beautiful MJ standing in the doorway.
"Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot." (If executed well, or some slight variation.)
Still a bit dumbfounded, Peter says nothing, and Gwen walks into frame behind him. Her eyes shift from Peter to MJ and back to Peter. MJ extends her greetings to Gwen, and Peter turns from MJ to Gwen, giving his girlfriend a small, sheepish smile with a bit of laugh (for some reason, I can so easily visualize Garfield in this type of scene, and it seems really funny - but maybe that's my twisted mind). And then, as we're still focussed on the image of Peter's final emotion, we cut to black.
Too rom com? Hehehe.
So, this would all be in the execution, obviously. But I think this approach would work if Pete was in high school (even graduating year) for the film. Also, depending on the characterization of Pete and the approach to the story and the film, I think it could work as a fun ending that clearly shows they have plans to continue the story of this Peter Parker. Obviously, it can be considered a cliffhanger, but I think I would enjoy it. Again, it really only works if the tone of the film isn't totally dark (which it shouldn't be for Spidey), or if the ending has some light at least. I think it would be cool to kick off the love triangle with a fun start for a change, instead of the typical melodramatic triangles we often get on film and TV. But that's just me. It works in my mind. Hehe.
***
I was totally expecting to get ripped for thinking up such a light-hearted ending. That said, there is certainly still plenty of time for me to be ripped by other posters.
But I'm glad I got my point across. I can easily visualize this working, and working well, in my head, but it's obviously a bit harder to type it out and convey it verbally. I'm all for epic superhero endings, but I think this would really fit Spidey/Peter. At the end of the day, he's a normal dude with normal problems (although I'm not sure I would call two smokin hot babes a "problem" ), it's just that he just happens to have incredible spider powers. I wouldn't mind seeing a light-hearted ending for a change, especially if the film focuses more on character and what it's like being Peter Parker.

Rejoice, my brace Brigadiers, thy Generalissimo hath returned unscathed from his perilous duty on the set of the new Spider-Man reboot! The event was terrific! I met our new Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield. You’ll be amazed how perfectly this talented guy fits the role! And when you see the lovely Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy you’ll realize why Peter has such a king-size crush in her! The talented Rhys Ifans is Spidey’s deadly foe! I’ll be acting with him and Andrew Garfield! I just hope I don’t steal the scene too much. Marvel has been lucky to have the greatest directors. I can’t rave enough about Marc Webb. What a pleasure to work with!. I’ll prove how good Marc is—he handled my incredibly complex 30-second scene without any directing advice from me! He’s a winner! As for my cameo, we’ll have to wait till next year to see it, which is a terrible burden to inflict on mankind! But till then —Excelsior!

Yeah but in every god-dang film? Enough is enough already. It's not that big of a deal, the average audience member could care less. But, to me, it sends a message of comedic relief, which sometimes, doesn't work.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with his cameos. Anyways, more from Stan Lee's Twitter:
One Brigadier taunted thy beloved Generalissimo because I had nothing negative to say about the Spider-Man reboot movie. But the truth is—The cast is great. The effects are great. The script is great. As for my cameo, well, modesty forbids me, but you get the idea. Yea, ‘tis a happy time for fandom with Thor, Captain America and Spidey coming thy way! And wait till thou seeth Pow’s Governator cartoon.Whether on the battlefield or the screen, I seek not negatives but embrace the positive, the good things in entertainment and in life. Why dwell upon the bad when there is good to celebrate? Remember our famed battle cry ”Upward and onward to greater glory!” Excelsior

OMG, I feel like I started something with my post.
I did in no way mean that I don't want Stan Lee to have a cameo. I love that man, he's a ****ing legend! I LOVED his cameos in the Iron Man movies for instance. I want to see him in this one as well. What I simply meant is that his cameo in this movie seems a bit misplaced. Having Stan Lee pop up in the midst of a brutal fight against the Lizard is what concerns me.

I don't like it either. It's got camp written all over it. Although that is just speculation, Marc Webb may make it work.

^^ Why?
Because in a battle that should have a serious tone to it, I don't want a "Oh look that's Stan Lee!" moment put into it.
The cameo in Iron Man is a perfect example of how he should show up imo. It's brief, very "hey...wait a sec!" fun and cool but still does not take away focus from anything of importance.
Spider-ManHero12
04-16-2011, 11:28 AM
^^ Well, I don't see how it takes away from a battle though. I mean, look how quick Stan's cameo was in S-M2 during the bank/building battle.
I think some people are asking for too much from this film and are going to be dissapointed when it doesn't meet all of their expectations. No comic book film ever gets everything 100% spot on with what fans want. There will always be things that are different.
Oscorp
04-16-2011, 11:30 AM
Yeah, but didn't the rumour go that he would work in the library, trying to put the books up in the shelves or something while Spidey and Lizard battle out? Or did I completely missunderstand that? If that's the case, that's why I'm concerned about it.

I wouldn't say that it's better than Raimi's swinging scenes. It's very well done however. But Raimi's swinging scenes are damn great. I, for instance, think Spidey's chasedown with the burglar is one of the best scenes in the entire trilogy.

Well, the physics were off, but the choreographing for some of it was cooler, IMO. Like, him running on the wall was pure awesome. Most of Raimi's swinging scenes were just swinging. The final scene in 1 was easily the best though, swinging was exaggerated and made it more enjoyable. But I will say, the video used that web-zip thing too much.
