Don't like the animation, but I didn't like what Spectacular Spider-Man looked like at first and that turned out to be pretty great. So I'll watch a couple episodes and decide then. Isn't Josh Keaton supposed to be voicing someone in this series? :)

Well sure, it's supposed to be geared towards kids. What kind of animation would you prefer? Haha they can't really go the Batman: The Red Hood route, with blood and all that. XD Although I have to say, I greatly prefer the flat animation to that 3D-ish crap they try to use all the time.

Firstly, you can barely see it. Secondly, I have my doubts that clip is entirely finished... you know, much like the first trailer for the GL movie. Why they are rushing this stuff I don't know. I think DC/WB is gunning for GL to be a new flagship character but they are being impatient to build the hype and not putting out finished shots first.

That blast Hal shoots from the ring at the end there is great and epic. That's how powerful I wish the ring blasts would always be depicted, but usually pretty dainty.
This show looks pretty epic, a CG version of Timms usual work seems appropriately awesome.

Will other Lanterns be able to appear in this (Guy, John, & Kyle.)?

Timm needs a new style, its not the 90's or even the 00's anymore...his style was awesome to see, but definitely not a good transition to 3D block shapes...i hate the style, but will give the show a try.
If story is good the animation will be secondary in my opinion. I'm glad it doesn't look retarded like the First Flight designs did.

I think that remains to be seen. It probably depends, at least in part, on where this fits in with the DCAU continuity. The hardest thing to reconcile would be that S:TAS Kyle Rayner got his ring from Abin Sur in the same fashion that Hal did...
I'd love for it to fit in though.

No point in making it, though. Young Justice isn't in continuity with it. Why try adding this?
DaveMoral
06-25-2011, 12:36 PM
Primarily because the style of GL:TAS is so similar. Young Justice is pretty distinct from the Timmverse DCAU stuff stylistically.
TheIncredibleSk

Hal Jordan can not fit into the DCAU continuity wise anyway you slice it. This in its own realm.

Sinestro is gonna be a good guy in this series I think so that doesn't fit in. Kyle doesn't exist yet also.
DaveMoral
06-26-2011, 11:25 AM
From what I read Sinestro wasn't even going to be touched upon, for fear of treading on the live action film's toes. Maybe with the dismal outlook for GL2 Timm will go ahead with Sinestro though. That can only be good.

This just got me that much more interested in the series...
The animation is still a concern as everything seems too bright/undetailed/kiddified... but it's also very fluid and the facial expressions are wonderfully rendered. As long as the story and acting are good I can definitely overlook the style.
Big shout to Josh Keaton who it seems is going to do a fantastic job as Hal Jordan.

Love Timm's style. But in 3D... well, it looks a bit bland. And some animations look a bit too stiff. Like when Jordan ran for example. But looking forward to it. And I like the way the ring works in this animation more than the live-action Movie.

I like what I'm seeing for this series. It seems to me that there's a new trend, and it's bashing all things GL. A lackluster film, to some, and suddenly that makes them doubt Bruce EFF-ing Timm? That's kind of crazy to me. Considering his track record.
This show is going to knock it out of the park with a giant glowing green baseball bat, and the critics will be eating their hats.
Also, criticizing the animation on the premise that it "looks like the Incredibles" is kind of funny. Timm's style precedes, and was no doubt partial inspiration, for the Incredibles and on top of that... the Incredibles was, well, incredible!

This show looks fun to me. I like the Incredibles-esque look of this series where the CGI mixed with Bruce Timm's character designs gives it a modern yet retro look reminiscent of the classic stop-motion animation of Rankin/Bass, instead of just rehashing the standard look that Bruce Timm's Justice League had or the overdone anime look. I will be watching this series.

The pilot didn't grab me all that much. It lacked that feel the DCAU had. The animation was far too flat and rubbery, and the story was just bland. It didn't have the intrigue of Batman or the epicness of JL. Also, did it really need to take a cue from Star Trek: Voyager and an extremely recent storyline and not fully explore the GL lore? I can only imagine they went that direction in order to avoid any conflicts with the movie-verse (assuming they even make a sequel), especially since they were asked not to use Sinestro I've read.
I'll give it a chance with a few more eps, but ultimately I don't think I'll be sticking around for this series if it remains like this.

Amazing premiere. I didn't even know if I would even watch this show, after seeing the clunky CGI. But the voice acting, writing, characterization, and drama were top notch. The ending really surprised me. This is NOT just a kiddie show. It handles ideas like deception, vengeance, and sacrifice.

A very Good start to GL Animated Series, I liked that they decided to go with a different approach with animation that lends itself to making 3D constructs, different landscapes, ships and gives characters a DC Mattel action figure like appearance.
I liked the voice acting by Nathan Fillon as Hal Jordan and Micheal Clarke Duncan as Kilowog.

i posted this on the other thread so i'll just repost it here.
i didn't like that the lanterns only used the aura in space, they should use it whenever they fly. also im hoping to see some rage crazed red lanterns. i know atrocitus can talk, but i figure these 2 were probably his 2 "generals". so the lower red lanterns will probably be rage induced non speaking beings. like if they ever show their ceremony they spoke of it will have a huge crowd of those red lanterns we know from the introduction of the red lanterns in the comics.
ok, now the animation. im trying to get into it, but at times it just looks like unfinished samples. it is really smooth. i can deal with it though, i am just happy to see space flying.
i also agree the red lanterns in the first episode is kind of blowing your wad. i thought those promos were from the season when we saw the red lanterns, not the first episode. i thought we would get some sinestro corps first then after they are defeated the red lanterns show up.

I saw the first episode today on the CN. The animation was fine. The idea of using a ship to get out to the "frontier" was ok but maybe a bit lame of having a frontier to begin with. As for the Red Lanterns, they seem to be more Yellow Lanterns in the way of controling their powers even though Zilox was doing the blood puking bit. A big way to bypass the ship idea is remember that GLs can basically warp gate even though it is a drain on their power. With the end of the first episode, it sounds like it will follow more of the GL comic instead of GLC. I'm more for story and character development over the animation so not 100% sold on the story yet. Replace Red with Yellow and remove the ship\frontier then it would be a bit more believable for me to be part of GL mythos.

The fourth episode of season one (Into The Abyss) was okay, it did not have much story other than Hal, Kilowog and Razer rescuing a stranded cargo ship from falling into a black hole.

This was a character development story that built a friendlier relationship between Kilowog and Razar. It also further developed the apathy of Aya as well as gave her a more humanoid form. I think an episode like this is necessary for a series and it is better they do it sooner than later.

Gotta say, this show is really getting me into the Green Lantern universe for the first time ever. I mean, I realize it's probably pretty scaled down from the comics due to the budget, but I think it does paint a picture of just how much epic potential the concept of GL has. I concur with this. I wasn't even that familiar with Green Lantern to begin with, and Secret Origin pretty much clued me in on everything that I needed to know, from Hal Jordan's background and personality, his relationship with Carol, how the rings work, The Guardians, the Green Lanterns themselves, etc.
It's basically "Green Lantern 101" or "Green Lantern for Dummies". :woot:
I'd also recommend Green Lantern: Rebirth. It's a great restart of the Green Lantern comic series but also another great starting point for new fans just starting to get into the character.

Thanks guys, I downloaded Secret Origin at Comixology. Two issues in and I'm definitely enjoying it, though like you said, it does just seem the bare bones basics. Guess I'm checking out Rebirth next!

A lot happens between Secret Origin and Rebirth (pretty much 40 years of comics) so you might have to surf Wikipedia for a bit to catch up if you're not familiar with Guy, John, Kyle, and Hal's bad years.
After Rebirth I'd just go with Johns' run on the main book if you want Hal. If you like the other human Lanterns check out the Green Lantern Cops series.

There are simply not enough fans on GL boards, at least not as many as there are Spider man fans discussing Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, or as many as Avengers fans discussing Avengers :Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon in both Avengers sub forum and in the general TV series sub forum..
As there is a similar thread in TV series sub forums, this thread does not get as many visitors though Ultimate Spider-Man series thread and the the Avengers:EMH thread in Avengers sub forum does not face the same same problem.

Strange. It seems as much of a following as the comics have it's not rolled over into the show and maybe that's hampered somewhat by the response to the movie. This show has really got the goods IMO.

The action in this show is off the chain.
I'd go the extra mile and say that everything about it is off the chain not just the action.

The writing on this show is well done. I am actually interested in the characters, which leads me to put up with the absolutely horrible animation style they use.
The action seems to always have good pace, and I appreciate they don't mind killing off people. Though, I would like to start seeing some Red Lantern Casualties.

The animation has its pros and cons.
The animation used helps them create alien world landscapes, constructs, ships, buildings, trees.
But the characters look like Bruce timm's action figures made from flexible rubber.
I have become used to it and don't find that distracting as the story, character development and action scenes are good plus they are slowly introducing GL mythos much better than the previous attempts.

Like everything, it has its good and bad, that is true; it's just not my preference. It hasn't grown on me yet, and I don't suspect it will, but like i said, the actual series itself has been really good. They are definitely introducing GL the right way.

The latest episode "...In Love and War" showed the planet Zamaron, home world of Star Sapphires, carol Ferris also gets the violet ring, Kilowog as usual finds himself in trouble again and it is left to Razer, Hal and Aaya to do the investigation and to rescue him.
Overall a good episode

It was neat to see Carol don her Star Sapphire ring, but I felt overcoming the fact that it was driving her a little crazy was too easy. Would have liked to see a struggle, or at the very least have her keep the ring. If the queen's niece is going to re-teach her people about 'love' maybe the ring will find its way back to Carol and we can get some more Star Sapphire in the show.
Not the perfect episode, but it was solid nonetheless. Next week should be a good one.

The story telling in the series has been pretty strong to this point but this most recent episode was a disappointment. Seems like Carol and the Star Sapphires have just been shoe-horned into the story. It just didn't gel with the rest of the series for me.

I get what you're saying, It was a strange little side-track, but if the Sapphires (or some of them) come back into the fold against the RL's it will lessen disappointment of this past episode. With the way the episode ended, the queen's niece very plausibly could turn a few of them off-screen and come back later to help the GLs.
Not as good but still a solid ep. nonetheless.

This episode completely erased the foul taste of the last. Nicely done. Prelude to Blue Laterns I'm guessing? What is Hal's team going to do for a power latern now?
Completely off topic. The Animal Man shorts are AWESOME. They need to adapt that into an on going series of it's own. I love art style and the stories are just hilarious. MAKE IT HAPPEN DC!

^That wasn't the only power battery on the ship. Hal and Kilowog each have their own. So one of them was turned blue, my guess is it was Hal's. Remember though, the ship itself is powered by a rather large power battery.

Hawkmen served their purpose, I guess. They didn't steal the show or anything.. the fights with Bumpy were cool though. Solid, Solid episode. It will be interesting if any of the hawkmen do in fact show up at some point in the future to fight the RLs

Plus, their ship is powered by one ginormous GL battery. I think they'll be fine.

Well let's just say that things just got real and hit the fan. I knew as soon as they dropped those planet slaying bombs that the asteroid gate was not going to be enough to stop Atrocitus. You know, the Red Lanterns seem to be REALLY compelling and resourceful villains here. I wonder how the Sinestro Corps will be able to top them. I am on the edge of my seat for the next episode...I must know what happens next!

Last week's episode "Invasion" was amazing, I liked how they included the Saint Walker's back story before he becomes a Blue lantern, but this week's episode is all out action packed !
The next one "Homecoming" is the season one finale episode, where Hal is about to reach Oa.
As Guardians are left with almost no GL Corps to defend Oa and Hal, Razer and Kilowog are left stranded in space and Atrocitus reached there, things become ugly.

A good ending to the first half of the season with lots of action and drama. We have the return of the Star Sapphires and the debut of Saint Walker as the first Blue Lantern. Good to see Hal and Carol reunited while Razer and Aya also together. Aya shed a tear was her moment. I hope they keep the cast intact for the second half while add more characters like Saint Walker and the 4-armed GL, along with Star Sapphire Ga'Tia. I'm surprised Queen Iolande didn't appear.

Fantastic episode to close the season. If the movie was half as good as this series they would have made fortune.
Brilliant and this is coming from a Marvel guy who cares little for DC.
I wish season 1 was released on Blu ray rather than DVD as it would be a day 1 purchase.
Pretty cool series so far. Howzabout they introduce Tomar Re soon. Still Sinestro can't be too far off either.... :)

I liked everything about this episode except the fight between Hal and Atrocitus, it was almost as if they suddenly realized that the episode's time was running out so they took the shortcut.
The main high points were -
Saint Walker as Blue Lantern fighting along with Mogo and kilowog.
Star Sapphires helping Hal and Razer to reach Oa.
Aya shows emotions like Humans.
Overall a good finale, but it could have been much better. Looking forward to the start of the next season, hope that they show more GL corps and continue with Aaya and Razer as supporting cast.

It's so obvious that Saint Walker represents Christianity. His transcendental pose is very similar (in fact a mirror image) of this:

I think you are both correct, In GL mythos Blue lantern Saint Walker's story does take certain aspects from Bible, but in this version the poses are taken from both Christ and Buddha.

Arguably those Jesus poses were most likely lifted from images of the Buddha that Christian artists were exposed to.

Guy Gardner Looks Pretty Boss In New GREEN LANTERN: TAS Reveal
When Green Lantern: The Animated Series returns to Cartoon Network this September, Hal Jordan will find Earth a different place. After defeating the Red Lantern Corps. in the far reaches of space Hal looks to be in a good place but not so fast warns producer Jim Krieg. He warns "not to get too comfortable with the happiness Hal is feeling in his heart, because we're just gonna mess up his life again."
Hal's life takes a turn for the worst when he finds that while he's been out in space a new Green Lantern for Sector 2814 has been found in Guy Gardner, a character probably most famous for a run-in with Batman. "He's like Hal Jordan cranked to Level 10," said producer Giancarlo Volpe. "He's that much cockier, more brash and a womanizer."
Guy Gardner will be voiced by Diedrich Bader of Batman: The Brave and the Bold fame. But Hal's troubles don't end with Guy, the second season's big baddie will be the Anti-Monitor which will reportedly cause Hal to go on a recruiting campaign for more allies.
