Hal jordan = the spectre

Now ...i will be the first to admit that I dont keep up as much as I should...SO...reading Identity Crisis the other day ( after finding a copy at a comic exchange)...and Hal Jordan was THE SPECTRE !!!!....how when and why did this occur....I know the premis of the Spectre , I just want to know when Hal became him...;)

Cyborg Superman destroyed Coast City during the whole Death and Return of Superman story. That pushed Hal over the deepend, he massacred the Corps, destroy the Central Power Battery, killed Sinestro and became the alterego villain Parallax. After doing some evil stuff and trying to change the world to bring back Coast City in Zero Hour at some point he sacrificed his own life by plunging into the Sun to reignite it. Which somewhere along the line led to the Spectre possessing Jordan as the new Spirit of Vengeance. Then in Rebirth he ended up being freed from both the Parallax fear entity and the Spectre.
