Chris Evans has played two Marvel heroes. Which do you prefer?

Captain America/Steve Rogers easily for me. His portrayal of an earnest man who just wants to fight for country worked so well. He was great as the Human Torch...best thing about those movies...but this was so much better.

It appears this will probably skew towards the Cap side since we're in his board but what can you do.....

His Cap was miles better, though he made a good Torch, too. Cap is just a deeper character.

I thought he did a great job in both roles. Having said that I definitely prefer Cap and it helps that it's the far better movie. One more thing, both roles are far different. I remember people worrying Cap would be too similar to the Torch's mannerisms and portrayal. Evans is a pretty good actor.

this should be good.

Simply put he played the roles as they were meant to be for example he was the right age for Human Torch because HT is cocky and a prankster, but now that Chris Evans has matured he easily can play the boy scout Captain America.

Chris was one of the few bright spots of Fantastic Four, and I thought he did justice to Jonny Storm. However there's really no comparison, Cap is a better movie, he has more to work with, he's able to bring more to the table in this roll, and much more likeable in this roll.

Human Torch gets no love :whatever: I voted for Cap.

He was fantastic as both, but better as the Human Torch, imo.

The fact that Chris Evans has the skills to effectively portray two characters from the MARVEL Universe that are like Polar Contrasts to each other really says a lot about his acting skills.

I mean, I would have never thought back in the day, that Chris Evans could play Steve so well due to how well he played Johnny Storm. Now, I can't imagine anyone playing Steve rogers other than him.

Captain America/Steve Rogers, Evans showed he had range and depth to give solid performance that wasn't based in comedy alone . Evans was funny and entertaining as Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four. But he was 10 times better as The Star Spangled Man

Captain America. Evans really sold me on this character who is a superhero in the truest sense-- he's a true role model, and those characters are difficult to sell to the audience without coming across as dull or boring, but Evans owned it. IMO that's a lot harder than playing the lovable douche like he did in Fantastic 4.

Marvin

Thinking about it now
He was well suited for the MarvelStudio's version of Cap

but he pretty much nailed the Real Human Torch.

Given both films were actually perfect, I'd rather see him as torch.

Captain America BY FAR.

Steve Rogers, without a doubt. Maybe it is because Chris Evans played one too many of those cocky, arrogant characters, but his Johnny Storm seemed like a rethread of other roles he has done. But Evans' Rogers really convinced us that he's an old-fashioned, courageous man who doesn't back down and has that "aw shucks" personality, and they are quite different than the Chris Evans that we thought we know. Therefore, I'm way more impressed with his performance as Steve Rogers.

Suzanne78

He was Steve Rogers, just as he totally embodied Johnny Storm in the FF films. I mean, I see Johnny in the comics, and I see Chris. Now, though, when I read Captain America comics, I'll see Chris as Steve.

That said, I voted for Captain America, as it was the better overall movie.

He's fantastic as cap...it requires more heart and more acting too. Evans is no Captain America in real life, even though he seems like a down to earth guy. He disappeared into the role for me

There was nothing entertaining about the Fantastic Four movies. That talentless hack director wouldn't know how to spell 'entertaining'.

That said, Captain America by far. Evans shot this out of the park, he owned the role.

Cap! Easily. He was fantastic as The Human Torch, but he had better material to work with as Captain America (because it's a better movie on all levels).

Exactly. If you look at him as Johnny Storm now, and think to yourself the same guy is playing Steve Rogers, you can't believe it or see it. But then when you actually watch him as Rogers, you absolutely believe it and you forget he is Johnny Storm.

I went Torch. He's good at cocky characters and has good timing. He was good as Cap, but I really think other people could have played that role just as good. So I'd prefer Evans as Torch over Cap, as I would prefer Reynolds as Deadpool over GL.

Cap by a mile.

His Johnny Storm was just a bit too much of a dick, but i guess that was more because of that horrible script than Chris' actual performance...

Cap by a mile.

I agree. In my eyes , he's Captain America and that's it. He brought such a heart and humility to a character that has often been portrayed as a cardboard cut out . Evans is by far the best actor to play this role. I'm glad they went with him .

Cap

Maybe it's because the character itself and the fact that I can totally buy large groups of men following him into war and giving their lives, or maybe it's because everything that came out of Evans' mouth felt completely genuine and real. He was so likable and I can relate to him so much when he was the little guy who may have always lost the fight physically but never lost the fight mentally, because he never gave up. Then he became so admirable and inspiring as Captain America, finally having the physical attributes to match the heart that he had. None of this would shine through if Evans didn't shine. He was one of the few good things about the fantastic four movies, but he owns this. I feel vindicated too, because I kept telling my friends he can do it. I kept saying watch Sunshine, watch Street Kings. There's more to him than the smart mouth punk. He proved me right and more.

He was admittedly good in both roles. He completely embodied the personality of Johnny Storm in the FF movies, but that seems to be closer to his personality in real life. I guess he showed more range in Cap but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of his humour than just trying to portray Steve Rogers's earnestness and humility. At least he wasn't constantly hitting on Hayley Atwell in Cap and making lewd comments, which is what Johnny Storm would've been doing the whole time. Had he been Johnny Storm, I think Peggy would've not warmed to him at all for most of the movie, and it would've been the typical cliche of girl giving guy the cold shoulder, but finally giving in to him. As Rogers, Peggy always seemed fairly open to him but maintained a professional relationship too, except for the part where she caught him kissing the other girl and thought he had changed. However, it seemed as if she could still believe him when he said that it wasn't his doing and she realised that he was still as clueless about girls.

His Torch was Great with the capital "G". He was the best thing about the FF movies. His Cap is even better. The guy can act, and he made the Cap movie work. It's just like the Original Star Wars trilogy-although it had a ton of things going for it, if Mark Hamill had not played Luke Skywalker as great and as sincerely as he did, it would have been corny and fake. I love good guy characters, and I put Evans' Cap in the same class as Hamill's Luke and Christopher Reeve's Superman. Without Evans performance, Cap would have been a fun movie. With his performance, it was a great movie.

Captain America but in my mind it's not as easy a choice as the poll suggests. He was pretty perfect as the Human Torch but it is no where near as difficult a role as Cap.

I didn't even realize Chris Evans was the guy who played the Torth until after I had already seen the movie twice - That is how well he pulled off cap, that not a bit of any of the Torch came through.
I was shocked when I found out he was in fantastic four, because I had seen both of them and did think he pulled off his character well, but never would have imagined based on those performances alone that he would make a good cap.

I guess he showed more range in Cap but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of his humour than just trying to portray Steve Rogers's earnestness and humility.

There was humor, it just came out in different ways.

Like when he was getting heckled by the crowd, or when that one secretary was coming onto him strongly and he didn't know how to react.

Both were well executed, funny, and demonstrated a nice part of about cap's character, that his humility and meekness can actually be a comedic attribute in contrast with the fact that he's an ass kicker on the battlefield.

100% for Steve Rogers.
That earnest man who wants to protect his people more than himself is very attractive.
Not saying that Torch sucks though, but it pales in comparison to Captain for Chris Evans at least

I think he fits the torch role better. He's naturally comedic

I just can't see steven rogers or captain america when he's wearing the suit. To me it felt like a satirical character playing a serious one.

now don't get me wrong, i'm removing the quality of the films away from this equation. chris got far more screen time and much better quality scenes in cap which may swing his role but I still think if we were to replace actors in both roles, his johnny role would be harder to fill rather than his cap one.

I never got the essence of soldier from him in cap. I suppose it didn't help showing a large proportion of his missions being montages, I think we could have coped with one more raid being highlighted

maybe with the reality of the avengers coming out, i can't see chris confidently standing among all those great actors and coming across as commanding them through (or eventually leading them through if they break away from shield).

He was the highlight of both films for me, so tough call. Though I'd have to go with Cap just because I wasn't 100% sold on him playing the Captain at first, so I went in with lower expectations, and he proved to be the best Cap I could imagine, beyond words. Though I still have to strongly admire him going through the transition between Steve and Johnny. That was truly a feat, and that takes acting skill to play diverse roles such as those. Well done, Evans.

I was flipping channels recently and passed the original FF movie. It was weird to see Evans with the buzzed brown hair as Johnny Storm, cracking jokes and being a ladies' man, because I was so occupied with him as Cap over the course of 2011.

Regarding the main question, there's no debate: Captain America was a better character in a better film, and Evans played him to perfection, so you gotta give it to Cap. But Evans really showed his talent and range as Steve Rogers (remember how concerned everybody was before the movie that he would be constantly joking, hitting on chicks, wearing a permanent smirk?). I hope he gets good parts in other movies because I've really grown to like him as an actor.

While he played both parts in a way that was true to their characterisation in the comics, I'm gonna say I liked his performance as Cap the best. He was likable in the role, and he had a lot more depth to the character.

Chris Evans was perfect for the Human Torch and strangely also perfect for Steve Rogers aka Captain America. His performance(s) as Cap have been exceptional, I really do consider this as one of the best superhero castings since Chris Reeve as Superman.

Bruce_Begins

For me prefect casting -

Chris reeve - Superman.

Huge Jackman - Wolverine.

Robert Downey - Iron Man.

Chris Evans - Captain America.

Christian Bale - Batman.

James Marsden -Cyclops.

Although, it is most difficult to get a correct Batman, Bale is the closest, not 100 % perfect but near 75 %.

I was skeptical when I found out he was cast as Cap, but all doubts were laid to rest after seeing the movie. He really hit it out of the park in both TFA and Avengers. Marvel has been pretty good about casting their leads thus far though, let's see if they can keep it up with GotG.
