Superman movies needed to show some diversity, in past most of the TV series and movies (even comics) featured mostly white people, now they have a chance to make the movie more realistic and show some diversity, nothing wrong with that approach.

Yeah. It was like watching The Fresh Prince, only with white people instead of black :p

What's the problem. The new spider man is black Hispanic I believe.
Still living like its the bloody 60s or something.
The new Spider-Man isn't Peter Parker.
Anywhoo, it's not so much about race, per say, as it is faithfully adapting the look of any given character.
I would protest any Superman suit that dares to not use red, blue, and yellow, for example.

Many fans are just purists -- that's all. It isn't that they're necessarily racist (although that's a possibility for some ). I mean.. if people are going to whine about Henry Cavill's lack of a spitcurl or James Bond not having dark hair on film anymore (there were actually several anti-Daniel Craig sites created for this very reason, believe it or not), it's only logical that some people will cry foul when a known character's race is changed for whatever reason. In terms of appearance, it's a drastic alteration, and comic fans are known for nitpicking about even the small things.
And btw, the new Ultimates Spider-Man is an altogether different character in the comics. It's not like they changed Peter Parker's race.

Well if you're astounded now then wait till I explain in detail.
Zod.
Zod being the villian makes me just go wtf we get another already seen character. Before it was reveled who the villian would be I was like a kid turing Christmas time holding a present. Wondering what's inside? Who is it going to be? Bizarro? Brainiac? Mxyzptlk!?! Imagine how let down I was when I found out it was Zod. A villian I find to be overated in the first place (but that's whole different thing). It really was like getting socks for Christmas.
Nolan is one of the writers, it was kinda assumed even when we knew nothing about the movie that Zod was the likely villain. Nolan doesn't stray to far from realistic looking villains. There was really very small chances that we'd be seeing Brainiac or Darkseid, at least in the first movie.
All I'm saying is, give it a chance, it might surprise you.
The Picture.
When I saw the picture I felt like we are not going in the right direction. I get a dark vibe from this picture and there should not be a dark Superman movie. Batman is a dark character not Superman. I don't like how the costume looks and call me old fashion but Superman should have the spit curl.
The picture, the lighting, that pose and the apparent "dark" look is all as intentional as can be. They're just trying to get the fans to adjust to the lack of trunks. That blue is not as dark as it appears.
In the sun it'll look quite bright I'm sure.
Laurence Fishburne as Perry White.
This just feels like they're just trying to do a Nick Fury/Sam Jackson thing to me. I don't really mind when they change sex, race, or skin color in movies or tv shows. But this time I don't like it. This really is the least bothersome of the three but it was enough for me to decide not to go watch.
Didn't know what to think of this myself at first either, because while I like Fishburne and think he's a terrific actor, I would have preferred Perry to be white. But really, this is a non issue. I'm watching for Superman, not Perry and Fishburne will do a great job anyway. I'll bet anything that most people will walk out of that theatre loving the guy.

Good lord... :whatever:
As far as LF as Perry, to be honest, i'm conflicted.
On one hand I have absoutely NO PROBLEM with him as Perry. He's a good actor and it's certainly a bold direction to take the character.
However having said that, I gotta be honest and say that if it were any other character...say if they cast Lex or General Lane or any other character that is traditionally 'white', i'd probably have some issues with it.
Its a double standard I know. But its honest.

Denzel Washington for Commissioner Gordon!! Gordon is basically the Perry White of the Batman books!
A character's history doesn't matter anymore! Hippolyta should be Angela Bassett, if they ever get around to making a Wonder Woman flick! Just as long as they are FINE ACTORS, nothing else matters! Hey! throw in Forrest Whittaker as Zeus the GREEK god! Because you know that Greek gods (like Norse gods) had black skin. Right? They switched Heimadall out right? And Elba did a super job! Whittaker was great in Last King Of Scotland!
Shucks....Alfred Pennyworth??? That simply screams Ving Rhames!! What do you think? Outstanding performer!! Who says Alfred has to be an old white Brit, just because he's been that for 70 years??? Pish Posh!!
Look....I think many on these boards who are dogging out those who are objecting to this are making a category mistake.
No one is saying that Fishburne or any of the ones I just mentioned ARE NOT GREAT AT THEIR CRAFT!
A "No" vote to this move, is not a vote against black actors! It's a vote FOR staying true to the character and his back story. Do these black actors make it work? Yes. But a white actor could, too. And should.....if that character is already white.
Can you imagine the hue and cry if War Machine had not been Don Cheadle or another black man? But instead this guy??

I said if it was anyone other than Bruce McGill I'd be disappointed with the choice. My second choice was Harvey Keitel. That is how I picture Perry White. Older, heavy set, strong, and I always pictured him as an older white man. I never pictured Laurence Fishburne as Perry White.
I think that more importantly reveals the whole tone of the movie. I really can not picture Laurence Fishburne spouting off cheesy lines or doing campy scenes hamming it up. I could see Amy Adams doing that, but I can't see Diane Lane doing it, or Russell Crowe. So I think that this choice for Perry most importantly should tell everyone about the tone of the movie.

I think this is a slight overreaction. And let's be clear, if Superman himself was black or spanish, I might share your point of view. But I would hope Perry White being white or black isn't all it takes to ruin this movie. If that's the case, I think there would be more pressing issues to worry about...

So I was watching The Matrix Reloaded and realized that Perry White here shared some very good camera time with General Swanwick played by Henry Lennix:
http://www.wearysloth.com/Gallery/ActorsL/10203-27542.gif
They didn't exactly like each other in the movie and it hit me how good they are as actors. I'm looking forward to seeing them in a Superman movie. Such a talented cast. I really wish that this script is written intelligently and creatively. Something this cast can really sink their teeth into and show off their amazing talents for this film.
I'm exited to see both too. I'm kinda hoping/thinking that Swanwick will be an ally to Superman trying his best to prevent chaos and war, but wont hesitate to put a threat down as well. Here's hoping for some colorful performances from both.

Oh, the race thing again. I don't care. Fishburne is awesome and I would never consider Perry White a main character, he's a supporting one...and somehow one that I really don't care about in terms of race. I mean, I don't know if I'd approve them changing Lana Langs race for example, but Perry...when I think of Perry, I never think of a specific image or look, other than an older, experienced Editor-in-Chief. When I think Perry White I think about his personality and place in the universe. And somehow I can't think of anyone actually better than Fishburne.

I know I should PM this question or save this for the Smallville board but I don't think Smallville butchered that much things about Superman or even changed that much in the Superman compared to something like the JL/JLU Cartoon, Lois and Clark, Nolan Batman movies, Richard Donner movies, etc or even the Superman universe has changed(Golden to Silver Age, Pre Crisis to Post Crisis, Elseworld, New 52, etc) but I digress and
I agree there is little to not much I like about Kristen Kreuk Lana Lang(actress or character but she is hot) too but she is still as much Lana Lang as any actress who played her in any movie, cartoon or otherwise and no different than Samuel L. Jackson playing Nick Fury, Michael Clark Duncan as Wilson Fisk, etc.
but back to the Perry White matter, race doesn't matter all that matter is that the personality is in tact and that is the personality of a gruff boss then it's all right(unlike people like Black Panther, Peter Parker, Clark Kent, etc then don't change the look of the character) at least that's how I view it.

Agreed. I really wanna see Laurence Fishburne get a meaty arc with Perry White in the next film. Have Lex Luthor and LexCorp just bombarding the Daily Planet, threatening them with closure, and all the pressure is on Perry to buckle. But he defiantly, maybe self-destructively, continues to pursue the truth, because it's what his paper is about and what he believes in.

Yes! If MOS is about Krypton, MOS2 should be more about earth, its people and their ways. It should be LESS of a superhero action-oriented flick and more of a drama. But World's Finest NEEDS Brainiac, IMHO. It'd be too awesome to see what Lex and Brainiac plot against the two heroes.

I don't know but that earring really bothered me ;/
i didnt notice till I saw the movie the second time.
I felt like pretty much anyone could have played Perry and Fishburne didn't lend a whole lot to it. He wasn't horrible, he just didn't have a lot to do and that's fine because he's not the star.
and did anyone else get MATRIX/MORPHEUS vibe when the feds came after Lois while she was on the phone with Perry??? :woot:

Didn't see much of him but I liked what I saw. Should see much more of him in the sequel though. Expecting quite a few Daily Planet scenes.
Saw MOS last night, I probably never would've paid much mind to the earring if I hadn't read you guys' posts. :p

Lol. The earring was cool. Certainly a Daily Planet for a new age.
