View Full Version : Making the perfect Spidey suit
Spidey4fun, awesome to see you on this forum. I saw your posts in the shoutbox. I received your e-mail already. Believe it or not, this guy has a radical costume. ;)

Okay Xeno, I'm not sure which costume your talking about. I do think though that if you get Tim's suit to look anymore realistic, the threads may start coming apart on it lol :). In all seriousness though I'm making that comment on all the pics I've seen on his site (not that I own his costume) and which are awesome pics. Tim's costume would be on the top of my list of spidey costumes to obtain. I know SpiderHam has a great suit too (and I tried emailing him to get some info but I guess he's busy or email gost lost) but it also looks great. I wish mick would post something to on this forum, I kind of miss him on this thread to tell you the honest truth. I just want to say there are plenty of guys who look great in costume (and thanks german for the update on your site) and plenty of guys who do a great thing as trying to make fantasy and reality with the superhero thing (thank SpidEMC for making us believe in a new hero.(and hopefully will get to see more of KnightSeeker.)
In any case I think this thread still makes me want somehow for my dream for the want of a Spidey suit. Though being at 294 pounds (my body is ready for any suit.) also my online chats with others about my dream has been quiet very quiet lately. So I guess it all really does depend on how bad I want it. Anyway I'll get off the online stage and let someone else speak :)

Hi Xeno,
Thanks for the comments. But I'm still looking to improve the suit. I'm going to make a sublimated suit with latex webbing. If anyones got any Spidey II art work you're willing to SHARE I'd appreciate receiving it. Anything.......I have a fair bit but i'm still looking for more. www.spidey4fun.000k2.com (http://www.spidey4fun.000k2.com)

Lar,
So you weigh 294 pounds? About a year ago, I was bordering 200. Now I'm at 160, size 33 waist. If having a Spidey suit is what makes you want to drop those pounds, then go for it. Having something to inspire you is the only thing that keeps you going. My thing was wanting to be like my hero Arnold Schwarzenegger. I felt sorry for myself, being a 17 year old who would never be in as good shape as a 56 year old. Since then, I've started eating better, and I strength train 4-5 times a week, as well as getting plenty of cardio. Just find your groove, stick with it, and, most importantly, be patient.
Hi,
maybe I can bring back some life in this thread:
Hereīs my first test of printing my artwork on fabric. It was printed directly on the fabric by a huge inkjet printer, but unfortunately my artwork was too dark and had too much contrast. The color dyes the fabric through to its back side so there arenīt any white gaps when itīs stretched.
Hopefully Iīll have it printed correctly next week.

Hey OVDH,
Looking good. Is that die sublimation? I'm going to try the same thing shortly. Looks like you've used the pattern from a couple of threads back. I have a couple of friends who are 3D artists working on the art work for the same pattern at the moment. Should be ready in a couple of weeks. Does your pattern have the brick work through it?
Ollie, looking awesome ! Try lightening the contrast on the blue a bit more.

Wow... thatīs pretty amazing !!!
It just needs to have the contrast tuned. But itīs amazing. Congrats

Nice looking piece there!
Now not to change the subject, but I have been on here for a while and have something I would like to share.
I got engaged the other night! I had known this girl for about 2 years. Even before my ex. She even knew of my ex as well and never gave up on me. Nor I on her actually. I just never figured it would go anywhere. Seeing as how at first she lived in the phillipines. Now she is in Bahrain. I received a letter the other day as well as some pics. She stated her love for me. So The other night when she called, I made the best of the situation and asked her to marry me. She said yes, but has 18 months left on her contract over there. This next year and a half is gonna seem like an eternity, but this spidey has himself a future bride.

hiya all,
it has been a while since i last posted on this forum. well it has been hectic for me lately. a lot of doctor appointment and physical test to prep me for the surgery. well any way, the forum look's great.
well let me get straight to the point, through a secret sourse i've manage to obtain the original pattern of the spiderman 2 movie costume. it was originally offer by Xeno, but some how Xeno never recive the pattern. so i was fortunate enough to obtain it through a close friend of mine who happen to have the original dye sub sheet which were discarded by sony. he offer to sell it to me at a pretty reasonable price.
i will have them scan and save it on a disk and offer it to any one here who's wish to buy it. the pattern will be scan in a high resolution scanner with 4.0 pixel (i think) and there will be a modification of the colour to match the movie style suit. basicly, it would be an excact replicate of the pattern of the suit worn by tobey.
3 different print artist will be working on the colour contrass of the pattern using reference picture from both spiderman 1 and 2 to give it that nice retro type touch. but again. this suit will be base soley on the spiderman 2 movie suit. i know that some member here prefer colour suit on the first movie. so i am incoperating a mixture of both to satisfied both need.
i'm still not sure wheather to keep the webbing line or discard it. but mostly i will discard it. this will give member here the option of implementing their own webbing design.
i am charging this pattern base on the demand. the more oder i've got, the cheaper i am charging for it. so i need to to know how many people would be interested. please email me or PM me.
thanks and have a nice day

imurme, thanks for posting my pics for me.
blaze thanks for your help also.
spidey4fun, i sent a pm.
oberon, on this suit my webbing is latex. i did the whole sculpting moulding casting thing. but if you dont want to get so elaborate. you could do this. i have used this method in the past and it worked very well. basicly i made a sheet of plaster about three ft sq. i then cut strait slots 1/16 of an inch wide by 1/16 deep. i used a dremel. i cut as many slots as i could fit probribly fifty or so. then i used that to made about 70 latex strands. after trimming and washing them you can paint them with paint made from left over latex with a silver pigment added. then its all up to you gluing them down in the proper design. it really wasnt that hard. it took me about two weeks to make a suit that way. when your dont you just fill in the meeting points of the webbing with a bit of liquid latex this way it looks like one solid peice. hope that makes sence and helps.
bugeyed.
oh and i use a glue called devcon. it is a rubber adhesive with a psi strength of 200lbs. these webbs dont come of unless you really really pull.

10-06-2004, 08:40 AM
Bugeyed,
I really love your suit. Can you send me some close up pics of your webbing? I'd like to see how that process you described looks close up. Also, are you wearing a shell mask under the mask? You can also contact me at JHerman312@hotmail.com
Mr. Spider,
I like to use RainX ainti-fog. You can find it at most auto supply shops. (Autozone, etc.) I just put a few drops on the inside lense and use a Q-tip to spead it around. Than let it dry and I've never had any problem with them foggin up. I've got hours without having to retouch. Good luck.
Bugeyed !!! Totally rad suit. Haniel, my pattern has landed, just waiting for it to be scanned, trying to find a scanner. Have you sent the lenses yet ? I am giving my pattern free for a few people on the forum. They know who they are. Haniel, ;)
PS : Will be off board for this week as I have major examinations. Haniel, good luck on the surgery.

No marks ? How can it be possible ? You cleaned them ? Is that Latex or Polyurethane ?

you could use some thin clear plastic with mirrored window tint or white mesh fabric depening on the style you like. for the rims urithane or latex works well be carefule though if you make them riged (hard) they need to be an exact fit to your face so IMO latex or another flexable material is best.

Chris Reeve was the person who made me beleive superheros were real when i was about five or so. i remember going to opening day with my parents. he opend the world of heroism to me without him the films may have floped and i most likely would not have taken on this fasination. through comics i was given a higher moral standerd of rite and wrong. nine years ago Chris showed that he was a true hero by never giving up on his fight to walk. im not sure many of us ( at least not I) could ever live up to what he has done and what his memory will keep on doing. LATER CHRIS YOUR MEMORY WILL LIVE ON FOREVER! :supes: :supes: :supes:

nice suit. you made it? is that the one youre talking about with the latex lines on the gypsum? real nice nice job. it's a serious pain glueing all the webbing down on these suits. im not sure what material name you are talking about. if you mean what i said for the eyes, you can find it at a hardware or home improvement store. it is privacy window tint and it comes in chrome, or mirrored, both work well. i use the mirrored. then at a hobby store you should be able to find very very thin plastic sheets im talking in the thousandths of an inch. if my new eyes work out i could set you up with a set if you want. youd just have to cover shipping.

What shoe/foot protection do those with suits (especially LethalGear) wear?
I am finding that my feet slip off the flat soles that are on my suit - I need a pair of small/kung fu style shoe to be inserted.
Any ideas?
Cheers guys!

IRT ebay removing auctions:
They really screwed me over. My auction had already ended with the BIN. They sent me and the buyer a nasty email about infringement. The buyer was told he didn't need to complete the transaction.
What really irks me though is how the buyer tried to use the situation as a way to "negotiate" a lower price since he knew I was stuck and couldn't relist the item. After a few days of stalling, he backed out of the deal after I had emphasized that it was important that he is serious about buying the costume. He refused to use paypal and insisted on sending a check, which of course I would have to wait to clear. All this just inches closer to Halloween and who knows if the check will clear and of course I would lose a huge number of potential buyers once halloween is over.
As of right now, I got a few different offers that I am talking to potential buyers about. The original buyer has once again tried to make another deal after backing out. He now wants me to hold on to the check and cash it after halloween, at which time he wants to buy the costume!

Looks good!
Question, when you all make your webs (I assume you make them along the lines of the tutorial on the spider costume site) do you have a problem with them cracking when the suit is worn or do they stretch well?
Hi Aaron,
they are all sculpted in a mold before glueing and they stretch like a rubber band.
Hope that helps
Ollie
Aaron O.
10-14-2004, 04:20 PM
Excellent. Sorry for the chain of questions, but what do you all use for the mold?
bugeyed
10-14-2004, 05:05 PM
There are a few different molding materials out there. For economy you can go with a plaster or hydracal mold. If you going to be doing more than fifty castings though you would want to go with a silicone mold. for your average guy making a suit for himself though plaster is much cheaper.

Hello,
Ollie, could you tell me what did you use to paint the webs? Thanks

10-18-2004, 02:14 AM
Wow, I wish I would have found this site sooner.
I am a huge spiderfan living in NY and about 2 months ago, I decided to be Spiderman for Halloween (I am told quite often that I resemble Tobey). I have been working out and physically training for the past two months, so you can see I am very dedicated to this event (I have a 4 pack for the first time in my life). As far as the costume goes, I have the spandex and a seamstress and a pair of ninja boots I was going to use for shoes under the spandex. I was planning on photoshopping some pictures of the original movie costume templates to create templates of my own. I was going to use the tulip method to make the webbing. I was going to modify some oakley m-frame lenses for the eyes, and make some latex frames for them. And, though time consuming, I was going to hand paint the muscle definition and brick pattern.
However, I have seen on this thread that your collective efforts are much better than my plan was going to be, so I was hoping to call on your help, though I know this is short notice. I am seeking leads on better webbing, leads on silk screening the muscle definition and brick pattern, leads on better lenses frames, and tips on glue. I have seen some of your efforts and I would love to get ahold of some of them if I could. I would be willing to pay for any help anyone could give, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please email me at wbennin@gmail.com
Also, on a completely different topic, I have a few gmail invites for anyone interested.
Thanks,
wbennin

I don't have any problem with the Tulip paint. I did find that the Jones Tones paint broke all the time. I recomend the Tulip. Although I've heard people having a lot of success using liquid latex and mixing it with the Tulip and then applying it for the weblines. Apparently this is even better. I don't know first hand cuz I've never tried it. But I hear it works like a charm. No breaking at all. Good luck

hiya all,
well first off, i'm sorry to hear that tim page got pull off the internet. that is a real shame and a shameless act. my guess would be that the same person which pull your website off the internet is the same person who got Xeno ejected from this forum. now the question is, what did Xeno done to deserve this? i mean he had been an up right citizen of hype and always contribute any way he can to the forum. i just dun think it's fair. i shutter to think who is next on the hit list.
i have to agree, if marvel would just put a little more effort into the creation of thier spiderman suit, then we wouldn't be tempted to go out and make our own. no offense to marvel, but i wouldn't even put those OFFICIAL linsence product spiderman costume on my dog, no less my self. if marvel is going to win over any fan, there better get their act together and do some thing about those pajama costume.
there should take a lesson from cospa japan. now there is a costume you would be proud to dawn on. not perfect, but still a hell of lot better then marvel. at least there dun cut hole where the eyes should be.
overal, i think cooperate america need to re evaluate their copy right policies. it's not like we making billion of dollar making a few feet of spandex jump suit. there need to redirect their attention to what really matter. and that's pirated DVD. that is where there lose the majority of their income to. not costume maker. people like, tim, bob, ben, spiderjack, etc are merely providing a service to other who needs it. it's not like a full time commitment toward it.
it's getting boring now going back to ebay to see if there is any new and exciting home made spiderman costume, cause there aren't anymore. now it is just some cheap immitation, official lisence product. snoozeville man!!!
have a nice day.

SpiderJack
10-23-2004, 07:57 AM
Spidey4fun,
I never had the Tulip break, but when I apply it I make sure that I stretch the fabic out. So in essence the material is already being stretched to it's extreme point and then the paint is applied. This way it won't break when I put the suit on.

10-23-2004, 09:12 AM
Aaron O, Sorry I haven't tried it yet. Not sure the mix. It will be guess work unless some else can shed some light on the situation.
SpiderJack, I have previously applied Tulip when the suit was stretched to my measurements. So your suggesting I stretch it past my measurements?? Doesn't it look puffy when it contracts?
I have a thoery on how to be banned from this site....M owns the intellectual property to everything Spiderman. If you offer anything for sale on this site that relates to Spiderman you will be profiting from M's intellectual property. Is this Illegal and how to be banned???? trepamoros,
You reallly should go back and read some of the preivous posts. LOL But Tulip Brand is fabric paint. It comes in a variety of colors. You can buy it on-line or at Joann Fabrics or any other craft store. You want Tulip Brand not Jones Tones.
Now I don't know what you mean by "what is your funtion?" I guess my "function" is I'm a fan and costumer. I use a basic car window tint. You can find it at most car detailers. I've also heard that people can find decent window tinting at at Lowe's and Home Depot. But I've never looked there. Hope this helps.
Oberon
10-23-2004, 04:13 PM
I guess I can understand what trepamoros doubt is.
I mean... I know a little bit of his language, and I think that heīs probably making a mistake. The "tint" we refer to is not what you use to paint walls, trepamoros. Iīll try to explain him (even though I donīt speak spanish very well):
La "tint" que nosotros hablamos no es la tinta que se usa para pintar muros, etc. Es la pelicula que se usa en automoveis, para diminuir la intensidad de la luminosidad. Compreende?. Si no, tenta ir en Google y buscar por "window tint" e usted verá do que hablamos en las janelas de los automoveis"
Well...letīs see if my spanish works !! LOL !!!

Well.... I wouldnīt recommend that. Youīd better start from zero. I mean... donīt use a tight shirt as base. Buy some lycra and make it from square one.
Xeno sells patterns of the original costume, so if you donīt have any idea of how to begin, itīs a very good thing to follow.
If you canīt find latex or is not used to work with polyurethane, etc, use 3D Paint. This is very easy to find.

I've been around here for a few months, e-mailed Tim about his suit a while back. So basically he inspired me (along with all the other guys at spider-costumes) to make my own spiderman costume. So far it's turning out excellent. I've finished sowing it, put on a good bit of webbing (tulip, black gelly), but am waiting on lenses and for my local tulip supplier to restock their shelves ;) If Tim is there... how did you go about doing birthday parties/ functions. feel free to E-mail or PM me (if this board has it?). I'll post pics (or try to) when it's done.

Tim - I also want to thank you for all that you've done for those of us interested in Spider-man costumes. I bought one of those cheap Halloween costumes many years ago and was not satisfied with it at all. Later, I was searching the web and found your site. I looked at all of the photos and read all of the text. I too love to do appearances as Spider-man for kids. Currently, I'm on my third costume (one from Lethal Gear). My ultimate hope is to one-day own a Tim-original. I think that Marvel is being very narrow-minded and short-sighted about how they protect their copyright. You've done a lot to promote their products. THANKS.

Go to www.spider-costumes.de >> gallery >> movie costume.
Use the pictures to make it look the same, and draw your lines onto the fabric with pencil (it can come off if you mess up). I did not use latex... I used Tulip fabric paint (Black Gellies)

I wore mine out to parties last night. I'll tell you that the thing that sucked the most is that I couldn't go to the bathroom!
I'm glad I wore it out though. I found a lot of things on the suit I need to redo. I need to make new webs with latex and fabric paint THEN glue them on to the suit. I had a lot of webs break last night, especially on my mask, with I am going to have to attatch to my suit. It looks so crappy when the mask can be removed. Also I need to make mirror lenses rather than white. I couldn't see jack last night!

Slightly off topic, but did anyone happen to catch Tony Danza wearing the spiderman costume on the Tony Danza Show? (Sorry, I can't remember which night it was. I was channel surfing to find something for my kids.) He could have used some inspiration and help from here. The thing that bothered me most, was the blue of the pants did NOT match the blue on the shirt. The suit looked like it was several pieces. I think the pants and shirt were separate pieces as well as the gloves. At one point he pulled up the boot top, and there was no mask in sight.
Oh yeah, he kept saying he wished he had an apron. Someone should have told him to wear a dance belt, or use some of the other tricks mentioned on this board.

When using the wooden rails to make webs, did any of you have trouble with the wood soaking up the paint?
spidey4fun
11-06-2004, 09:33 PM
I have a black latex spider on the front of my suit. To make the latex black a water based paint was added to the latex and mixed through when it was still in liquid form. Use this idea to make your webbing black, sliver, grey or what ever colour.
If your wooden rails are soaking up the paint give them a coating of oil based paint first.

Are there any other methods of making webs? Or any tips you all can give me?

Try greasing up the rails with vaseline. It might prevent the sticking.

I'm guessing your using Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint that comes in a 118ml bottle. I just put it straight onto the suit. Just make sure you stretch your spidey suit to your size b4 you put the paint on it or it will crack up when stretched.
It's made by http://www.duncancrafts.com/products/product.asp?ID=149&SID=1 They might do mail order or send them an email and ask who there Spainish distributor is. That's how i got in here in Australia.

You Rock Spidermaniac!!
As for me I was at one of the huge local Mall for the trick or treat time. I was planning to go to NYC with one of my co-workers as Spidey and Venom, but he had got called into work at the last minute. But anyway when I got to the King of Pressia Mall it was way cool, got some of the biggest comments in the mall dressed as Venom, could not do the mask though, but but I did put in my orange contacts for that alien type look.
Spidermaniac got hand shakes and hi-fives, and ext. I got those also and the kids were excited, but to add the girls had to feel the muscles and the suit to make sure it was real and not padding, and a good amount of the girls made their sexy comments and so forth, and not to forget the slapps on the butt by some of the great looking ladies in the mall. Oh well I guess its good being the Villain once in a while ;) :venom:

Spideymaniac - I am going from using mesh to mirror tint. How is visibility with tinted eyes? Are you able to see well in low lit places? I know with my white mesh eyes I couldnt see anything unless there was a supernova outside!
Spideymaniac
11-08-2004, 07:09 PM
visibility is not a problem at all except that they will fog up which then becomes a real pain. i have yet to figure out a good way to prevent them from fogging. i was thinking of switching to some sort of hard lens and then just spraying lens defogger that i have for my scuba mask. when/if you switch and find a good way to keep them from fogging up, i'd love to hear your solution.

Aaron O.
11-08-2004, 09:27 PM
A lot of the guys use Rain-X anti fog. I used it on my other lenses, which will pretty much be made of the same material, so I don't see why it wouldnt work on your lenses as well.

I just took my plastic tint lenses out. Tried Rain-X but it didnt last long enough. I'm now using a double layer of fine aluminium mesh.
http://www.totalmodel.com/workshop/pages/workshop_308.shtml
It looks solid and reflective from a distance and OK up close. You can see out fine and no one can see in. It's not quite as good as tint with NO fog but heaps better for long Webhead sessions.
