Depends Tbx,
Regular liquid latex also called slip casting latex works great and I have never had a line break. As for Cold and Hot latex, both are foam latex and the hot really has minimal advantage over the cold other than it's cheaper. The colds advantage is you dont have to find an oven big enough to cook it (depending on the size of your molds). With The size of the webbing mold your looking at unless you cut up the chest and head youll need what a three foot oven. If the oven isnt an issue deffinetly go hot foam.
The place I'm getting it from supplies regular liquid latex, they said its for making masks.
Is liquid latex and foam latex the same thing?
I can't tell you an exact size of webs, but how much did it cost you?
Do you have any pics of your webs, close ups would be awesome.
bugeyed
01-26-2005, 09:10 PM
Yeah I have some close up pics but again ill need someone to post them or PM me your email and i can send you them.
As for how much latex... First let me ask you this, are you making a costume just for you or are you planning on selling some. I ask because latex usually comes in gallon jugs, some places will give you pints. If you don't need that much though I have a recipe and you can do a full suit including spiders for between 7 and 14 dollars. The webb pic i have has webbing made from this recipe, I've been using it for over five years and the latex is awsome with great stretch. The same recipe with a bit of tweeking also makes the paint for the final peice.
So let me know what you're thinking.

I wish you friggin people would just knock off this damn bickering. Joe, bugeyed, sheesh chill out!!! This is just rediculous. If you have something positive toward the real nature of this board, then say it. If not don't waste your time, much less ours.
AAAAnyway...........Yeah my lil girl loves her dad........And spiderman. She used to be afraid of me in my classic suit so I sold it. She loves this one though. She's my little helper when it comes to zipping up, or unzipping along the back.
i couldn't agree with you more blaze. it is people like them which give the hype a bad name. but let's not get caught in the snare of their impunity. we are well matual adult here. and as an adult we must set an example for other to follow. i'm sure the moderator would not be too please if we continue this little masacre. you and i both know that the hype have no place for bickering so let them have their fun.
btw, i would like to announce that my pattern came out of the printer today and it is AMAZING! the colour is crip and clean and the detail on the suit just blew me away. since i dun have a digital cam, it would took me some time to post some picture here on the hype as i need to see if any one of my friend own a digi cam.

What Han does is he mixes his critical, retaliatory responses w/ comments that ARE on topic. Furthermore, i think he responds to every post that has something to do w/ him (or that he has an opinion on), regardless if we've moved past it or gone beyond it. That fueles the fire again when he does.
Han when you read this thread, do you read in order, respond, and then go to the next post? If you do i'd encourage you to stop. Change your habit to reading everything all at once... make sure your response won't start anything again, and then respond.
Finally. Anyone on here who has been criticized for being critical/ abrasive, IS GUILTY of it. Primarly because of posts that would be considered personal attacks. I don't think the people involved understand the point that i've been trying to make all along. IT DOES NOT MATTER if someone attacks you personally.
You don't have to respond in retaliation. and the second part of that, YOU DONT HAVE TO ATTACK ANYONE TO BEGIN WITH.
Enough is enough you guys. If you feel like you have been attacked, and want to make a comment on it, be mature and use the PM. Don't involve the rest of the hype.
I don't know how many times this has been said, the guys on here act like little kids, constantly being reprimanded... then going right back to what they were doing. Is it going to take drastic measures on a moderator's part to help you learn that YOU JUST DON'T GO THERE

hey guys
bugeyed, you earlier talked about a mixture for making the webbing. The only thing that I'm trying to figure ot for a costume, is how in the move, they made it so that the edges of the webbing were straight, and like if you use tulip paint, or something like that, the webbing has rounded edges, which I just don't think looks quite as good.i'f someone knows of a mold or something to use, that'd be cool. But yeah anyway, if I could get that recipe thing from you bugeyed, that'd be cool.

Yeah, there are forms/ and molds that have been made for the webbing. SO far i think the one that Ollie (OVDH) is working on are the best so far. Unfortunately, molded webbing like that can get expensive. Tulip is the best bet for cost.

Who here has good lens frames that they are willing to sell or trade.
If you need a pattern, I'll trade my pattern for your lens frames.
If you have lens frames but need an actual hard lens and not crappy window tint, then ill trade you lenses for frames.
I got a front spider, a back spider, lenses, pattern.
I need lens frames.
Are you willing to trade?

Is it going to take drastic measures on a moderator's part to help you learn that YOU JUST DON'T GO THERE
your comment is mutual and i agree, i do response to every post if it has some thing to do with me. occasionally i let little tidbit slide with out letting it get on my nerve. but if you would go back and see the post that i've made before, you would realise that unless the comment is trashy and rude, i would never retaliate with brute and ignorant. my reputation are build upon the comment made on the hype. i offer printing service to member here and when a rude comment are toward me, it effect my image as a provider to my client. so you must understand why i am the way i am.
but i will take up on your suggestion and lay low on the rude comment. i appreciate your sober comment made toward this little problem. it is non directive and you dun use censor word to make your poitn and for that i am grateful.

Everyone, let's start over with no grudges etc.
Jawatrader, Hanielroswell, Purp, let bygones be bygones. I got no grudges anymore, its stupid to hold them so anyone whos got a grudge, lets start over. Anyways, after some hard work I think I'm almost there for my pattern. Check it out, all I need is to blend the highlighted muscles with the shading in the background.

my point you can't win. all i ask is that you give tbx a pattern.
cool down spiderfreak. this ain't a contest. we are all equal. no body win or lose. now technically as Xeno mention the pattern is still with me. so no use pushing X over the edge. and i really have to lay it down. what is this with the personal attack about secret sources. i know this has been the root of the entire arguement.
just as we are entitle to voice our opinion on the hype, we certainly have the right to say that we have our own secret source. when is that a crime? i dun know about you but i consider it a priviledge and if you too obnoxious to accept the fact, then i pity you.
if X said that he have a secret souce which only choose to share it with a certain few then that's his decision. after all, it does belong to X. when you got have a set of your own pattern, you can choose who not to share it or share with. as far as i'm concern, you just out looking for freebie.
we dun brag about how we have the very best or the most perfect. and some time when we choose not to share it with any one, we have our own reason. ask ollie or ham or any body if there are willing to let you in on their trade secret chances are they would not share it with you. especially when the item is of high value or with profit potential. that doesn't make us a bad person. even with all the rancid tongue yapping and talking trash about me, i still take the time to view the hype and try to help out any one who need it.
there is not one person who pm me seeking assistance which i have turn away from. so give X a break. he only human. if you need the pattern so badly, ebay now are flooded with spiderman pattern similiar to X or ollie which you could purchase now for less then what it was originally sold.

there is in fact difference in in lycra. usually in term of the amount of elastene and polyester. it is crucial that you have the right lycra for the pattern to be printed upon other wise the result could be less then satisfying. i didn't know this until Ben inform me about it.
pending on how the pattern is transfer to the lycra, you would have to access the quality of the fabric use. if you use dye sub, which is a kind of heating process, then lycra with a higher percentage of polyester are require to sustain the extreme heat. other wise, you end up scortching the fabric.
i thank Ben for the kudos on this knowledge which he have instill upon me.

You should fill the costume and attach the webs when the suit is the same shape as it is when you wear it. Mannequin works best, but you also can fill it with stuff out of a pillow or whatever.
TBX, I know the feeling...I too am going crazy with liquify. Great job by they way, it is a work of art, and only $35, I applaud you an your skills. I hope to have some example pics from a liquify test by next weekend.

The stretch of the fabric will all depend on what size of the image has to be dye sublimated.
Take a piece of spandex or lycra or whatever you like to call it, they're both the same, measure it unstretched and then stretch it as much as possible and take that measurement. Then divide the length UNstretched by the length stretched and you should probably get something around 71%.
take your height, say 6 feet. you have to scale the image in photoshop so that it will print out scaled to 71% of your height. you'll have to figure it out yourself i dont feel like writing an essay.
So my point is, it doesnt matter how stretchy the material is, just as long as the image is scaled properly.
TBX, I know the feeling...I too am going crazy with liquify. Great job by they way, it is a work of art, and only $35, I applaud you an your skills. I hope to have some example pics from a liquify test by next weekend.

Hey TBX, if i might make a suggestion...
Perhaps where you liquified the groin area of the costume... you might want the effect to look a little less...eh. extreme? In my opinion that area should be ALMOST flat ;)
*edit*....
unless of course you're going for a more, "adult" costume?
point being... it might look alittle funny one a wearer...yeah

lol, I have some original suit pics and it does bulge there, but he also had a jock on.
I'm getting extremely skeptical of price now that my pattern has such good comments.
Have you guys ever heard the saying "One unique penny is worth a million pennies, but a million unique pennies are only worth a penny each"?
I think it applies to my situation.

Ben or Haniel,
How can I tell what lycra is good? I bought a piece, but it doesn't stretch as good as spidyfan43's. In a few weeks I start the dye sub, I need good lycra. Do one of you know how to pick the good from the bad?
Oh and ben, how is the front spider doing? Still want one.
thnx
Spiderkes
well you need to have a higher percentage polyester in order to prevent scortch. usually there are 2 type of lycra, lower percentage in polyester but higher percentage in elastane. the stretch on this type of fabric would not do well under extreme heating process.
i would suggest higher polyester percentage over elastane. 92%/8% there would less stretch but it would so well under extreme heating.
i think what you have is correct since you stated that the stretching properties are not as good. you probably have the higher percentage polyester fabric. but it's best to have your printer create a sample for you just in case.

although i have to admit that your pattern look very good, but i doubt it would be a good idea to start your auction at 80 buck. may be a several month ago, before the pattern were still a white rhino, unknown and un heard of, yeah, you probably could fetch well over 80 buck. but now you could get the pattern for half that price at ebay and it ain't just one people doing it. it's the whole lot.
not to discredit you in any way, but i would suggest that you offer it at your said price of 35 dollar. i'm sure with the amount of creativity and effort put into your pattern, you might be lucky enough to fetch 50 dollar or even more.

true tbx, but the sewing machine is a must. And it's not possible with just any machine, you need the special one that makes seams which can stretch.
also known as a "Serger" ;)
instead of the conventional sewing machine that uses one thread (and a robbin)
a serger uses from 3 to 5 spools of thread. Another feature that sergers have is an automatic cutting mechanism... that trims off excess materials during the sewing process...
It's best to know what you're doing because it is easier to injure yourself w/ a serger.
However, another method of creating a "stretch stitch" (though not as neat... or reliable as a serger's stitch)....is to
(and this is what i did on my suit)
use the setting on the sewing machine that looks like so...
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
and layer it three times on top each other for durability. ;)
(meaning... stitch-backstitch, then restitch
Using polyester thread is also recommended because it stretches more (and is more durable) than cotton thread.

If you're making just a mask then yes. But if you're making a whole suit, then no. I've seen plenty of ****ty suits because first it's one thing they don't do, then it's another thing. And then it leads to a real piece.
So if you're going to make a suit, use dye sublimation and scale it to you, and after you sew it up and put webs on it you should have the exact size for lenses on it

Sounds like I struck a nerve with this 10,000th post thing with you. Actually my webbing is going to be just as good as Ollies as I have recently bought a router bit that is the exact same as they did in the movie. Plus I also have a computerized milling machine at school. So I'll be getting the negative molds for free and then I'll be selling webs left and right. Which will eventually give me enough money to do dye sublimation. So not only did I gain a ****load of money, I was also more efficient than anybody. And you know what? Ollie is a great guy on here and I figure after mines done, me and him will have the best suits on here.

Hello Again, Has anyone here ever explore the idea of creating or commissioning a statue to display your suit like the One Mike Hill created for Ben and Bobby's suit? I wonder how much something like that would cost, or who could you even find to do it? I believe the one Mike hill did was casted in Fiberglass, so it's somewhat light and durable. I also wonder if this statue/mannequin breaks a part to fit the costume better.

Thatīs what i mean... i donīt like people alway telling "mine is the best"... everyone who makes his own suit will love his suit.

First of all that kids an idiot and second of all I only said my webbing was great once. That conversation didn't last that long. And my pattern, everyone else said it was great before I did. The reason I think my pattern IS better than most of everyones except Xenos, because he has the original, is because people have PMd me saying so. Jawa asking to trade spidyfan43 saying one thing and when I try to reply hes gone, spiderman5 has been real helpful, Orlando congratulating me. Nfox congratulating me, etc.
Thats what has made me think that. And I never say things everyday about how mine is better or the best. I said it twice. So quit exaggerating. Besides why are you being such a jerk lately?
Orlando Spider
02-04-2005, 09:48 PM
Careful TBX, watch your tone.
You too German.
I will however admit that i agree with German about the suits. Every work of art is unique for the individual... it's just not right to say what they did was bad. Comparitevly is it the highest quality compared to "let's say" a movie suit? No... but they put there blood and sweat into it...and it's theirs. You can't take that away from them..only encourage them.
TBX, would you call that kid an idiot to his face? What if you had seen him working on that... pouring his heart out (as much as a 10 yr old can[i'd guess]) into the work on it. To him... when he completed that outfit i bet he felt like a million bucks. But if you said that...What would that do to his confidence? what would that do to his dream? What matters is he had the passion, and the heart to work hard on it. Does that mean he has a future in movie prop production? probably not... But it's his personal best.
Now in your case... take a reality check TBX. Though you have a great pattern here... and people approve that it would work on a suit, you should not be claiming it is the "best" suit. Because... frankly it certainly is not. As far as quality standards go, i'd consider spiderman5's "thebest" thus far (as i've seen)...pm me and i could go into why. But TBX i certainly think that we need to take a step off the pedistal now, and realize that though you DO have a good pattern, you can CERTAINLY improve on it....as it is not "better than anyone else's on here".
I hope i don't offend you with this... it's just when people begin to get a taste of the spotlight, and lose humbleness (and think they're the best), that's when it's time to realize that they need to take a step back... and continue to contribute. not gloat.
The reason i'm posting this on here..btw, and not in pm is because i think i have a valid point that everyone should take note of.
and TBX, i know you only said it twice... but you still said it.

I say anyone can corret a pattern. Who has the best suit here? I don't know. But to prove yourself show us a complete suit. So far only B&B and Ollie has proven theirselves to be great costumemakers. And then I am talking about the suit that is the most movie accurate. These people I think are the only ones who can have any demand about what their suits are worth and what they want for it. They have come this far to say their work is good, real good. And what's so strange is that you never hear these people showing off about their work. They just keep quiet and help anyone on the forum they can. Why is it that those who try to be the best always must claim they are the best?
To those that did not prove theirselfes, show us what you can do.
This post isn't directed to ANYONE. It's just giving my opinion in general and I am giving my respect to B&B and Ollie. I am not insulting a single soul here.
Hate long posts, but couldn't help it.
As Han would say,
Peace

I am a bit drunk now, so I'll quit. I just had a party where I wore my spidyfan suit, everybody loved it. Even the police came chatting with me and the taxi driver, who brought me home, said all the cabs were talking about me by intercom. It only is a bit annoying to keep all the people away that want to wear you mask...
Sleep well.

Check the yellow pages under "screen printing" and ask if they know people that do dye sublimation. Or check under "printers" or "printing".
Thanks TBX, I'll give this a try... Was wondering if there was someplace ppl have gone before so I know at least they have done this work before...

I've heard that simple superglue works great :)
But i've never used the method... so i'd wait for someone else's experienced opinion

Hey Han, thats a great idea...dont say it show it......I've been waiting for months and months to see some of YOUR work. Your comments have been interesting BUT a picture tells a 1000 words.....
i appreciate your patient and i have to admit that it has been a while. i'm not much for empty promises and i am a man of my word.
at the moment, i've made a sample from the pattern which i've obtain from my soucre and the result are very satisfiying. the colour and texture are just right.
now all i need is to find a digi cam to take some picture of the finish product. i haven't found any one with a digi cam yet. so i'm still looking for one. i will soon return this sample back to my source. so i would need to find a cam fast.
but i promise that i will dsiplay my creation to you all.

And thatīs what i would call SPAM or FLAMING...
BTW: You wonder, why nobodyīs interested in your webbing? May be itīs because, nobody have ever seen it...
i hate to say it but he got you there TBX. but i think there is mis understanding. i think tbx were refering to the pattern . and not the webbing. although i would like to see tbx version of the webbing.
10x better then any one here? hmmm.. that is still a cause for debate.

tbx, I haven't seen enough of your pattern to surely know what quality it has. I only saw a piece, everyone can do a piece. And keep the posts on topic plz, the level of the boards is decreasing. Could you pm me with a small pic of your whole pattern?
Spiderkes
i agree,
thus far, we like what we see. obviously you have a talent and we can see that from that one pattern . but i think you could arouse more interest if you could show us a little bit more then that. namely, the oblique, back and arm.

Ollie is a great guy on here and I figure after mines done, me and him will have the best suits on here.
again, that is still a matter of opinion.

Thatīs what i mean... i donīt like people alway telling "mine is the best"... everyone who makes his own suit will love his suit.
Thatīs what this thread was about a long time ago. It never depends on the quality... it was the family feeling in this thread. Every suit was great... because everybody knew how much work and time you have to spend on it.
For example:
http://www.spider-costumes.de/db_peter013.jpg
Nothing to do with the movie suit... but itīs great... you know why? Itīs his own work. He never copied work from others. He had his own ideas.
Sure... this thread is for everybody who needs a inspiration... but not for copy work.
I know... my next suit will NOT be a movie suit... the next one will be a Ben Reilly style... it will be perfect... because there is nothing to compare with.
And YOU can nothing say against it. Because the thread ist NOT "Making the perfect Spidey movie suit"
And please... stop telling us every day how amazing and perfect your work WILL be... show us your suit...
amen to that,
at the martial art school that i attend, there is a small sign at entrance at my dojo, it read, " please leave your ego at the door step " and i think this law should be applied to every one whom decided to be part of the hype.
sure, who doesn't think that their suit are very best or that it is better then the other. no harm thinking about it. but best keep your opinion to your self. or at my dojo, at the door step.
this is not a competition to see who could make the best suit of have the best looking pattern. this is a place for sharing and exchanging knowledge. with one another. we are all brother of the same cause. we family, let's act like one shall we. no more ego. we are all god children and we are all create equal. no one is better then some body.

TBX, I hate to tell you this, but the originals weren't made using a router bit and a CNC mill. It was made with a laser cutting machine for the precision that was intended and to make sure that there were no machine marks. Same with the mold of the back spider. But making a mold out of a CNC mill would be good. But you gotta clean machine marks after they are done. Especially if you're making metal molds. Routers don't tend to turn up really well. I tried before.
