Hey there guys, I am fairly new to the forum and am currently trying to make my own spidey suit. At present I have the printed lycra, shoes and am planning to get the webbing in the not too distant future. What I am really after is a top grade Face shell... does anyone know who makes them? If so PM me or post a reply on the board
Cheers

Hey guys. I've been lurking here for a while now trying to glean information on how to make my own Spidey suit. I just wanted to thank everybody for all of the info that's been posted on this huge thread on the topic. As I'm shooting for a more classic style costume a lot of the stuff on dye sub & the like really doesn't really apply to me but I appreciate all of the info on liquid latex, frame & spider materials, lenses, etc. Anyway, I've finally begun the process and, while the whole thing won't be done in time for Halloween (with my current workload) I've at least got a mask finished up and a plan for the rest.

Did you use foamies for the eyes? I like the shape looks good. I used foamies for my symbiote suit.

Yes I used foamies and then gave them a couple coats of spray Plasti Dip to give them a leathery texture (credit to someone on the board for that one... thanks).

I'm using a RD-407 Mask Making Latex mixed about 4:1 with black Liquitex acrylic paint. I just picked up one of the Tulip paints and emptied it out to use as an applicator since it has a nice fine point.

Hi all I am new to the forum and after search the vast amount of post and not finding exactly what I was looking for I decided to ask, maybe these questions have already been covered and if so directing me to the post will be sufficient or if you feel so inclined just telling me would be great as well. First I am a little confused how you move the pattern onto the computer so that you can add all those cool details, i am somewhat versed in Photo shop but can really thing how I can get the patter I would use or any pattern for that matter into the digital realm for proper editing. Second is there a post that talks about how to properly make a removable mask that attaches to the suit maybe my zipper or something instead of the one piece deal. Thanks for the help.

Sure. It's a grease spatter guard I picked up at K-Mart (just a generic house brand... not the Martha Stewart line). I don't remember exactly, but it seems like it was only $4 to $5 for about a 14" diameter guard.

Hey guys. Thanks for all of the encouragement. I'll try and answer your questions. SpideyFan85, I'm happy to share how I made it. It's a one piece mask, so start with a paper pattern similar to the one shown below.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/bradolson/MaskPattern.jpg
Go ahead and pre-stitch your neckline. Fold your fabric in half (finished side in :cwink: ) with the fold running along the front of your face. Trace your pattern (including the indents at the bridge of the nose and chin) onto your fabric. I like to use a Mark-B-Gone marker from Jo-Ann fabrics because when you're done you can just rinse the mask under the faucet and all your marks disappear. Next sew along your pattern lines skipping past the indents (see the yellow line on the photo). You'll end up with a very rudimentary mask with a lot of sag in it. Next, take the mask and lay it face up on the table. You should see the indents you traced onto the fabric. Mirror both of those onto the other side of the seam so that you end up with 2 diamonds (if you follow me). Now pinch those shut and pin them. Sew laterally across the mask to close those up. Basically you're trying to take some of the length out of the stitch going up and over your head without reducing the circumference of the mask signifigantly.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/bradolson/DSC02405.jpg
Try and keep the angle of the termination points on the chin as shallow as possible to avoid pop outs like the photo.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/bradolson/DSC02408.jpg
You should end up with something like this:
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/bradolson/lateralstitch.jpg
If everything went well you should have put yourself in a position to hide every seam except the one running from your chin down the front of your neck.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/bradolson/Spidey2.jpg
As far as cost goes, that's hard to gauge. I started off with the intent of making a complete suit, and that's still the case. I spent about $120 on a sewing machine and a few hundred bucks on various materials I've got sitting around (lycra, latex, foamies, screen, kung-fu shoes, etc.). That being said, if you didn't have to overbuy anything the finished product is probably comprised of about $10 worth of raw materials (not counting screw-ups / trial and error and the time to work it out and do it). My advice is this: Go hit the fabric shop and see what they have in 4 way stretch lycra (cheap as possible - bonus if it's red). Get a Mark-B-Gone and some Tulip Paint. Once you've gone through a yard or two of fabric tweaking the pattern to fit YOU the way you want it and practicing your webbing THEN get the good stuff (Your final Lycra and Liquid Latex). When doing your stitching make sure and use a stretch stitch and try to stretch the fabric as you're sewing.
spiderfan_ENT, I picked up a foam manequin head off of ebay and do all of my webbing on that. I use the Mark-B-Gone marker to sketch everything on until I'm satisfied. The webbing takes me a minimum of 4 sittings with at least 2 hours in between. I like to do the right side front to back, left side front to back, right side lateral and left side lateral as 4 separate quadrants. Basically, only do as much as you can while still being able to rest your hand (or at least a support finger) on the workpiece without the danger of smearing something you just layed down. That makes it a heck of a lot easier than trying to hover your hand above the lycra while trying to lay a straight line. At this point I hadn't really thought of selling the masks because that would take time away from my working on the entire suit (for me). severedcon, I hope this helps out. I'm working on my gloves right now... so far so good. Anyway, once again, thanks everyone for the support and all of the tips I've found on this forum that have helped me get this far. Keep up the great work!

FANTASTIC! Though all the suits here are superb, it's nice for a change to see something low tech that works! The one thing that has bugged me about the movie suits is that they don't look like some guy with average talent, ingenuity, and a few bucks made it. This is the kind of suit I imagine Peter Parker making. Good job, I look forward to seeing the rest of it as your progress. ... the finished product is probably comprised of about $10 worth of raw materials (not counting screw-ups / trial and error and the time to work it out and do it). mr Articulate - Thanks, that's EXACTLY what I'm going for. I'm with you, while the movie costumes are phenomenal, I'd really like to see something that's realistic for the REAL world. Ultimately I'm shooting for a 7 piece costume (gloves, boots, pants, shirt and mask). Something Peter Parker could wear under street clothes and still maintain a secret identity (basically, the way the costume's drawn in the comics). Still haven't worked out all the logistics on it, but it's a fun challenge to think outside the box a bit. SpideyFan85 - I actually have a foam mannequin head I picked up off e-bay. I do all of the sketch out and web application ON the head. That allows me to view the web placement in the round before I commit. It's probably a little harder than doing it stretched over a flat board, but as long as you're patient and only do a handful of lines at a time and then let them dry before continuing, it definitely pays off. Hope this helps.

Has anybody heard from SpiderTim recently? I paid him for a suit 18 months ago and my e-mails for the last 12 months have not been responded to. I know he's active online though since he redid his site and posted pics of his new black suit. Have I been ripped off?

It feels fine (not overly tight). Visibility & breathability are great. Maybe a 20% reduction in sight due to the screen, but I can still read a book or watch TV with it on.

BRADO,
Do you plan to make or buy a body maniquin to do the body parts??
I haven't decided yet. If I go with a mannequin type of thing I'll probably do a duct tape dummy. I had some pretty good success with that a few months ago when I was trying a boot. Just put on a stocking or a thin sock and wrap it fairly snug with a few layers of duct tape. Carefully cut it down the side with scissors and slip it off. Then just tape it back together and stuff it with something, closing off the top. The same works for a torso. Just put on an old tee shirt (a little smallish) and take some saran wrap to wrap up your neck a little way. Have a second person carefully wrap your torso, upper arms and neck (not too tight :cwink: ) with duct tape. After a few layers just have them cut it up the back and across the shoulder blades arm to arm. Stuff it and seal it and you've got a $10 torso dummy that matches your dimensions. The shirt's probably the last on my list though, as I'm sure it will present the biggest challenge.

Guys,
Has anyone here been in contact with SpiderTim (Tim Lane) recently?
Append:
Just noticed similar RISMO's post a few entries down. Looks like we are having similar problems bro. I know Tim is straight up. He sent me a suit. Took nearly a year. There were a few issues with it and he took it back to correct them. He offered to make a new one (as I was thinking of changing the colour of the webbing). He got the suit back in September 2005. I have had about two/three emails from him since, and nothing in months.
I know he makes the suits, and is not a rip off merchant, but I cant figure out why hes not responding.
Does anyone else have any insight as to where Tim has gone too?

I'm not talking about the black rims, I'm talking about what you see thru.
I personally use aluminum wire mesh 1/16. I got this idea from the boards. It works great, and photos well. You will probably have to use a couple layers, but visibility is still pretty good. As far as the frames you can use anything from foamies to plastic.

Hi Folks,
Well I am finally going to get off my a** and start working on a pattern of my own. Looking for some advice
What is the program of choice for creating them? Would I be correct in thinking Adobe Photoshop? Any particular version?
Does anyone have any good sources for CBTs or other online Tutorials for using Photoshop?
I would love to be able to produce printed webbing such as those made by Brad (spidey4fun) and others (as then work my way up to raised webbing).
Brad, Ollie, Shuurkes, Nayef..... you guys are setting the pace with the patterns. Plus a couple of others that are producing excellent patterns, but dont know if those guys are actually making the suits yet. Would any of you be able to point me in the right direction so I can get the right software and start learning how to use it right?
Thanks Guys!

I'd start by finding a local dye-sub printer or see what other forms of printing on lycra are available. You'll need a printer that can print 1500mm wiide. I use dye-sub...I dont think Ollie does..I think he's direct digital. Any photoshop will do..Version 7+ I've used. A lot of guys have found it hard to find a printer. No point doing all the work if you cant get it printed.

hi all,
I have been registered for a while but spend most my time on the replica prop forum.
Im currently making a few black suits and i have enlisted the help of a cnc programmer to make my web molds but i was wondering if any one can tell me what the depth width and angle of bevel was used for the webbing.
I have looked on this tread but i got dizzy, if anyone can help, it would be great.

I don't know the demensions for sure, but I am sculpting the base of the trapazoid at 1/8 in., the width at the top about 1/16 in. and the height at about 1/8 in.
It looks pretty good so far with all of my tests, just hope it keeps looking better after I find somewhere that will give me the paint for them.

I was wondering that myself.. I haven't found any reference to specific depth or angle, but what I did see way, way back on the boards is the first experimenters here discovered that suit looked best if the depth of the web varied. It seems to be more shallow at the hands and especially the fingers. Some of the earlier ones reveal how it looks very odd with the thicker webbing there.
I highly recommend taking the time and back reading as much as possible. You'll find links to how-to's and countless tips and tricks that will help your finished product become AMAZING. If you just ask questions you will be doomed to repeat many of the mistakes already learned, and some of them are really tragic. I saw one completely finished suit that had over $1500 and countless hours invested that the webbs esentially melted/disintegrated after a few months due to incompatable finish materials. You'll also see that the forerunners have found that using suits with raised movie style webbs requires constant repair and maintinance if you actually wear the suit. (you might want to rethink it if you're an acrobat like some of the other guys here)
Good luck... I hope to see your finished suit here!

Hey guys, some of these suits look awesome! I really like the Alex Ross suit! But anyway, I wanted to know where to get the red tights, and how to make the mask, and what you make the eyes out of. I might try to make a Halloween costume.
Sorry if this has already been asked, but I didn't feel like going thru almost 550 pages.
???? .....You might want to rethink your approach. The guys who have posted their experiences here have already done a ton of charity work documenting it for everyone's benifit (read: for your benifit!) asking them to do more is kinda rude.....Besides reading 550 + pages is nothing compared to the actual work needed to make a quality SPIDER-MAN suit. Check out brado... he read, he understood and he is doing some kickass work on his own "from scratch" suit design and thanking/paying back the board by posting his process (in detail)
WAY TO GO brado!! Thanks to you and all the other contributers, I hope to emulate your example soon!

I know some people were working on thier gloves earlier, and I didn't know if it'd help or not, but I figured I would show a pretty easy way to do the gloves.
http://www.ericbiddle.net/glovey.jpg
You pretty much just trace your hand, then add a bit to the sides of each finger to allow for the cloth and the seam, and the same thing for the rest of the arm.
You'd cut out 2 of this facing up, then 2 facing down, to act as each side of each hand, then you'd cut the oval out of 2 of the cloth cutouts that each face different ways so you can make those the bottom of the glove for the thumb to go through. Then there's the area at the bottom of the glove for the hem :P.
When you sew it you want to make sure that the lines between the fingers are square so you have space between the fingers and you can turn them inside out.
Then for the thumb, you just make sure to measure what would seem the right size for your thumb's width compared to the one I've shows there, fold it in half, sew along the edge, but not all the way down, then turn it rightside out, and sew it into the hole of the glove that is still facing inside out. It can be tricky and kind of annoying...
This probably isn't the best way to make a glove, but I've found it to be pretty easy compared to some of the other ways I've seen.
Hopefully this helps someone else out :D

This is on a styrofoam head, so it's not stretched out all the way, and the eye lenses are kind of my first version pinned on, but even when I wear it, there are kind of bumps along the seam on the back of the mask.
I'm using a 2 way stretch velvet spandex fabric, I was wondering if anyone had any clues as to how to get rid of these annoying folds or bumps or bunches in the back or whatever they could be called...

Severed con, for one... make sure that the seam along that back side is circular and smooth... not jagged lines where the stitching is. That can cause those lumps.
Second, make sure that there is not alot of fabric on the inside (unseen) side of the seam. If there is, trim it close to the stitching, or make slits in it to allow it to expand.
if you don't know what i mean i'll try and find some reference.

Ollie uses the pattern straight from the Sony movie patterns.

His words to me were that he made some significant adjustments with the colours (to suit his printer I guess), and many other tweaks that make it uniquely his.
But yes it was originally based on the original patterns to the best of my knowledge :woot:

I didn't mean to imply that Ollie doesn't work hard to perfect the pattern, he does. His tweaking has made his pattern one of the best. I just meant that the basic element for his pattern is most definately the Sony movie pattern.

I went back over the back and sewed in a little further to tighten it up a bit and tried to go as smoothly and in a circular path as possible... it definitely reduced the bumps a lot, but they are still there, I cut the extra material quite close to the seam as well. Maybe it's because of the fabric I'm using?
What do you mean by slits? Do you mean like brado's pattern had at around the eyes and chin that you go and sew, or something else?
I guess it's no huge deal if I don't get them to go away completely, this is my first suit afterall, haha, Not even Peter Parker himself had a perfect suit the first try :D

Guys,
Has anyone here been in contact with SpiderTim (Tim Lane) recently?
Thanks man. It's encouraging to know I am not the only one! I have honestly never doubted Tim's integrity in any of my previous correspondences with him. He's always super polite and seemed pretty on task. It just got a little weird about a year ago when out of the blue he e-mailed me saying that if I wanted a refund he would eBay my suit and pay me back that way. What was weird was that I never asked for a refund or even pestered him about anything other than monthly check-ups to see how he was doing! It seemed like a copy/paste message he may have sent to several people expecting suits.
The non-communication has been the most troubling. Especially when we can see that he's regularly active on eBay! I have tried several ways to get a message to him, even sending them through eBay's seller contact form. I really don't mind waiting. I would just like updates. If he needs to tell me that I have to wait till March '07, I'm totally cool with that. The not knowing part has been a knot in the stomach for both myself and my wife. I really just want the suit!
If anybody has any kind of contact with Tim, I would be tremendously grateful if you could relay our messages. I deeply apologize for posting this kind of tangental content here. I just can't think of anything else.

Yep..that should do the trick. I usually type "spiderman costume" into the search engine..but "suit" is also good. You need to cover all your bases to increase your market potential. :yay:
I wonder how many Spider-Tim suits are floating around... Ebay seems to be full of them.

Looks like the bidding wars have begun.:D
I just got back from the gym and not one but two amazing suits are up for grabs, needless to say I’m totally getting in on this action.
Remember to bid high and fast guys these two suits are something that don’t pop up everyday, although I have to say it really saddens me to hear your moving away from your old costume Orlando, yours is what initially brought me here to the forums from the RPF in the first place but with that said I’m looking forward to seeing you move onto your very own suit project so best of luck with the sale bro!:)

Hey there Richard good to have another fellow RPF’er join in on all the Spidey goodness, btw my name’s Andy over at the RPF & TDH, I've been keeping up with the black suit interest thread for sometime, so far the pattern is coming along nicely but it could use a little more tweaking with the hues, I can make out a bit of the bricking detail for the chest in the image but it’s kinda small to really tell.
Also what resolution and source material are you using for your template? I’m guessing your working in Photoshop and your using one of the SM2 thermal transfer prints as a reference point.
Anyways keep up the good work; myself, the guys here and those over on the RPF are really jazzed about this ever growing project in the works.:)

HI Andy, how ya doin.
the project is coming along nicely although i am a bit worried that the thread has gone stale.
the image is quite small, my photobucket really shrinks it down so ill see what i can do about that, i agree with the hues but thats easily adjusted.
I am using the scans for size reference but i also have the file of the muscle shading layer before the bricks and colours, only problem is that the resolution isnt good enough to blow it up too much so i using it to make my own shading.
glad to hear from you.

You can easily cancel, then block the idiot high bidder and it will go to the second bidder who seems like a solid ebayer. I would wait until the auctions nears and end because the idiot could just get another name and re-bid. You can also set your preferences to block all bidders with a (-1) or lower feedback or bidders who have not paid for multiple items. People like this think it's funny to bid on high priced items and not pay.

That's a really dirty tactic on ebay.. I have heard it is used to find out what the autobid max is from the compitition, then they go in at the last min. and bid just a little higher, or if it already exceeds their personal limit they just ignore the auction after they ruin it. Very slimy...

This person has done this a few other times. Each time he sells a suit, takes the money and dissapears. He then gets a new name and does it all over again.
This could all be stopped if the original auction owner just told ebay that this a-hole stole his pictures and auction words. Now someone else will be de-frauded.

I heard these things happen all the time when an auction gets high bids. These guys constantly skim ebay in search of auctions that could work and send 100s of emails like that a day. It is a standard email in which he only needs to fill in the item title, you dont read anything about the suit, he just calls it 'the item'.

I was fortunate to get a couple of spidey suits made (primary & backup), the webbing isn't raised but it looks great and the detail is pretty awsome. I did however, craft a venom suit and that was pretty fun. I designed the spider and I airbrushed the mask. The whole thing is almost finished (gotta finish painting the teeth) but here is my progress thus far.

Joeker... that looks REALLY interesting.
Personally i'd like to see you take that idea further....
If i can give my own two cents though, i think you're over-complicating the muscle anatomy and grouping. (The muscles have muscles on top of them, sort of thing).
But I do love the way you've done the colors and shading, very very interesting
(Edit:), looking at it a bit closer... i really like the color combo of the one on top... perhaps if you tried flipping the shadows? (so that the lowest points are darker, and the higher points are lighter?)

thanks. The fabric was pulled down over a slip on shoe. It was then stitched down, then a rubber agent was applied over the stitches. All in all a great way to do it.

Hmm... it's not the Plasti is it?? Lord knows the bat - folk use it for everything!!

lol no it's not plastidip. I use that for cowls and masks, but for shoe items you have to use stuff made for shoes.

Joeker... that looks REALLY interesting.
Thanks man, orignially they were just me screwing around back in the early days, i had forgotten about them of course now i have alot more experience.
if i were to do it again i'd probably start from scratch, i may print a suit up in the future..we'll see ;)
thanks for the kind words!

I had a feeling that one day this would come back and haunt me. At the time I posted this, dye sub patterns were few and far between. We were still sewing red and blue patterns together to make "The perfect Suit". I was referring to a Unitard pattern that you can slice and dice however you see fit. I still have the pattern also.

[QUOTE=TimDrakeRobin45]I thought I would share this suit which I love. The fabrics are very cool,
the blue is dark almost black and kinda fury like a spider. This suit was
made by my friend Kelly from KMD Theatrics.
Tim -
Good to see you here from the LOH! I remember when Kelly first posted that suit! Still can't compare to your Robin though!
-Ben
Hey, I was just wandering, what will happen if I paint the red and blue parts with just a little shading added to it on a white piece of cloth? Will it still be able to stretch out, or what?
anyone...?

Nice one olrlando i was gonna ask the same!, lol Well first off what did u do for halloween, with the amount of costumes you have?
I dressed up in my Spidey-4-fun suit for my halloween dance at school, it was pretty killer, girls kept on touching me, im not complaining lol:P The only problem was the mask was attached, and it got soo hott with liek 300 people in 1 room, and i couldnt really see at all in the dark, execpt when some blinding strobe lights came on. I might have some pics later.
Ill also post my shell pics when i get the shell.

yeh, I dont have any pics, but funny story, I was wearing my suit at school and I was in one of my classes and a teacher asked me out to the hall and told me that I had to put some pants on oover my costume... we'll to avoid an argument I did, so for that day I was Spider_Man w/ pants on.
I do think I made the yearbook though, so I'll let you know how that goes...

Batman suits are just like spidey suits...The more real you want it to look, the more $$$ you have to dish out. Mine was acquired pieces at a time. It took me around 10 months to get the right pieces. Be patient. I spent around 1-9-0-0 for everything. Try ebay or brotherhood of the bat. There are a couple of Spidey guys in that forum as well.
Excuse me for being off topic.......now returning to spidey stuff....
