I got a pattern on CD a few months ago and printed one suit that I was gonna make up and sell on. I sent it to my seamstress over 3 months ago but as she has never ever sewn a spidey suit it is taken her ages to sew! Anyway I orginally planned to make a few suits to sell on so ordered chest and back spiders for the suits, but after all the time its taken for the seamstress to even sew one suit I decided to make just the one and then sell on the other spiders. :-)

She is my friends Mum, so hoepfully she wont be charging much. Lol. Maybe $80!? Not 100% sure yet as she said she'd see how diffcult it was and how long it would take her. So long its been 3 months. Lol. But once I know her price I'll let you know.

Just my 2 cents...First if I was going to be Venom or try to sell a Venom suit I would make sure that I had extra muscle padding to make myself at least look like Venom. No offense, but the guy wearing the suit just doesn't really have the presence of the character. I mean he has "Mits" for goodness sakes! Also the fabric webbing over the eyes just gives it a cheaper look. Now I'm not saying I could do better, but I surely wouldn't even think of selling something like that starting at that price & not expect some criticism.

The problem I see is it is described as a "very accurate" suit. It's not. Your critisisms are right, but someone will jump on you and flame you for speaking your mind.
I bet you get somebody who will say that Topher was small. However look at the size of his arms with the padding they used.

Theres no fabric webbing over the eyes, if you were to read the auction description you'd know that. It's metal mesh "The lenses are made of a very tight mesh that allow you to see out perfectly but no one can see in even with camera flash. Please note that the last picture of the mask alone is older and doesn't show the current lenses that the other pictures do."
As for the mits comment, you can say no offense before anything and that doesn't make it less offensive. Thats a pretty ****ing disrespectful comment. My buddy was the only one I know who'd fit in the suit for the pictures and I'm sure we don't all have the perfect body that you do.

It's okay, no hard feelings here. I took the auction down though, no point in being ridiculed by everyone on ebay too. To be fair to you guys the dude who was wearing it was definitely far from venom shape. I would have worn it but I'm 180 and after the foam latex spiders were applied it made it a lot less stretchy.
I honestly believe though if it was worn by someone in proper shape with good pictures it would look reasonably accurate...maybe not the best because its the first costume I've ever made but I think its one of the only venoms so far that has brick pattern and good spiders and isn't made of latex, mclean krieger's is probably better though. I think my rush to put it on ebay pretty much ruined it, I may let it out a bit so I can wear it and get some professional pictures done.
I'm sorry if my reactions to the criticism were offensive but it just sucks when you put weeks of work and hundreds of dollars into a costume and people say its crap.
EDIT
Just to clarify when I meant silk screened it myself I mean I put together my 22" by 28 wooden frames by hand and actually had to paint the brick pattern on each frame by hand with screen filler because I couldn't get acetate that big for emulsion. It took at least the 300$ starting price of the auction for the materials for that one aspect alone. I would never throw a costume together and charge that much if it was not justified. I really thought I had a quality accurate product when I put it up.

haha hey man i know how you feel. atleast you can get some money out of it or keep it.
my venom sculpture took awhile to make. and i didnt know it was supposed to be casted when it was still wet, so i let it dry and it cracked. and the whole thing shattered.
i'd rather be happy with my sculpture and have someone call it crap then it be gone for good for no reason.

Yeah young is right.. And no offense (I do believe I can use it here, and not have it be offenseful) But it always bugs me when people use old pictures, or really crappy pictures. My dad is the #3 best seller on ebay in the U.S. (Ebay motorsports) and it's his job. The way to help your auction is have alot of picture showing every aspect (you've done well, yeah) In this case show maybe some of the up-close, brick pattern shots.. And then have your friend do some poses or something.. Just trying to help, and I think you should put it back up on ebay. Good luck
Edit: spelled something wrong.

I think your silk screen work is off the charts. Don't know anyone else who has achieved that. Well done!
Now the others are right in that it isn't screen accurate. But that doesn't mean it's not a nice suit. I think it's a great costume and I wouldn't have pulled it off ebay to appease the keyboard cowboys. Everyone has different tastes and someone out there will not only buy it but will also love it. Screen accuracy is not the be all and end all. :cwink:

Well, if you wanted to spend a LOT of time, you cold hand paint the bricks on the bricks that are already on your suit, then it would look unbelieveably awesome, but it would take really long and if ya messed up, yeh, that'd suck. actually, ya know, I might give that a try, we'll see.

It looks adequate to me, the colors look kind of off, but the guy said that's because of the scanning.
I have a question, can kung fu shoes be put inside of the foot of the suit? That way you could put the suit on and slip your feet into the shoes inside of the feet. (I have no sewing skills and can't sew soles on to the bottom of the feet). Any thoughts? Thanks.:yay:

It'd rip the bottom of your suit though, so it's not worth it.. you'd be better off putting it outside of the foot.

Simple, there is a part of the mask that is under your jaw.. So when you talk (your bottom jaw obviously goes up and down) which moves Venom's bottom jaw...
Pretty clever if you ask me..

well you can either make a clay sculpt of it and then make a cast of it. or u can make the spider in a 3d program, and have someone laser cut it into a mold for you. (which is more expensive)

Haunt this is incredible work! This pic should have been included with the auction. As others have stated, the more pics, or better pics showing any item on Ebay can sell an item or even better yet MORE money than you wanted! Also the right wording the better...such as "Ever wanted to be venom?" or "Get it now before Halloween is here". Just trying to help out man. I think with better pics you will be able to sell the Venom suit. I admire your work, as I can't sew s**t! Don't go throwing in the towel just yet Haunt....My talent is painting. You mean the one where it looks like they just took a one piece costume and carefully cut it apart? I guess that'll work as long as you safety pin the gloves and boots onto the costume after you put it on.:woot:

give me proof the frame was more then $24.95. and that it was framed professionally, and that the costume was made that way and he didnt just cut it up, and then maybe il believe its worth more than the $800 he got it for on ebay.

Hey guys, I had a couple of questions about painting a suit in photoshop, and was hoping maybe one or some of you could help. I'm not actually trying to make a live action suit, but a digital one.
Is there any kind of special brush or tool that you use for the muscle shading on the suit? How is it done?
Same with the black webbing, is it a line tool or something to make all the curvature and stuff?
Last one I promise, the bricks. To make them conform with the shading do I use liquify?
Thx for any and all help gents :)

If he paid $650 on the frame he got ripped off. It looks like the shadow box frames for sports jerseys they sell at craft stores for about $50. Also, the suit has pre-printed spiders. This is not a display piece, it's a moderately decent replica to be worn at a kids party. It's a nice suit, just not a display piece.
Also, shipping does not cost $200 for a frame that size. I ship big things like that all the time. That would be $75 at the most for U.S. shipping. It might be $200 for overseas, but he is charging $400 just to Canada.

Spider-Girl, to answer your questions about photoshop, these are my suggestions. Not sure how everyone else is doing it but this is the way I did. I also used a wacom drawing tablet for the shading.
Q: Is there any kind of special brush or tool that you use for the muscle shading on the suit? How is it done?
A: Use an extra large soft brush with black as your foreground fill. The brush size will be large approximately around 1000px or larger because of the scale of the file you will be working in. You will want to vary the opacity of the brush as you paint. You will also probably do a good deal of erasing with a large brush with an opacity level of around 25-30% to help even out where the shading starts to fade near the edges.
Q: Same with the black webbing, is it a line tool or something to make all the curvature and stuff?
A: Use the pen tool to plot out the basic line of your webbing, don't worry about the curvature at this point. Once you have all of your points drawn, don't press enter, instead select the "convert point tool" located as a sub tool of the pen tool in your tools pallet. Holding down "Ctrl" key as you click on a point will let you move the point around in x and y. Holding down the "Alt" key as you click on the point will let you bend or curve the line to your desire. Once you have your line and curves exactly the way you want it for the shape of the webbing, load the path as a selection. Depending on the version of photoshop you are using this may be located in a different location, in CS2 it is located as a tab on the layers pallet next to channels. Once you have your path loaded go to Edit > Stroke and then say Ok. Mess around with the Width to get the desired thickness. You'll have to do some cleanup once done because when converting to a selection always closes the path. I would suggest doing the webbing in smaller sections on different layers and then merging all of the layers together once done.
Q: Last one I promise, the bricks. To make them conform with the shading do I use liquify?
A: You can use liquify but this can become tedious. What I would suggest is creating your brick pattern as a pattern fill and filling your canvas one section of the suit at a time. Remove any excess brick pattern that is outside of the red/blue part of the suit. Export the shading of the part you are working on to a separate .psd file. Create a new layer under the shading and fill it with white. Now adjust the levels by pressing "Ctrl + L" and darken the shading to be pretty dark. The darker you have the shading the more deformation you will get in your brick pattern. Save the file as shading1_bump.psd. Make sure your canvas/image size is the same as your suit pattern image/canvas size. This way you know the shading bump will line up with the shading in your pattern.
Now go back to your pattern with the brick and select Filter > Distort > Displace. Leave the default Scale and select OK and then browse for you shading1_bump.psd and select "Open". This will use the bump map shading you created to distort the brick pattern. It squeezes the pattern where it is dark and expands it where it is light. You may need to adjust the Scale of the distort to get it the way you like it.
Hope this helps.

My sample is on the right and Ollie's palm is on the left. The purpose of my sample was to test how my cutter would go at cutting into Aluminimum and how it would finish. The depth of this sample is also a little deep. But Im happy with the test. Just need to add the corners to smooth the intersection of web line out. The webbing we be this colour. Im not sure if they'll shine...but my spiders do so I guess they will. The webbing is bigger then Ollies and smaller then Nayefs and will fit most size suits. I may get a smaller set of molds made some time in the future.

I have to say i am also loving the deeper look (can your webbing take more of a beating the it's counter parts at that thickness?). it gives the webbing more detail. But then again Your webs are from a new mold and that is some of oillies older webbing. Also from what i under stand oillie has a new mold on the way so i wonder if ollies new web's ect.. will be sharper then all his other sets? But well done none the less S4F!

Hi all,
New guy here, I don't have much to offer as far as constructing a suit as I just don't have the time to dedicate to the hobby. However, I think it's great what many of you have done and it looks very rewarding, I very much enjoy the pictures posted here of what everyone is working on.
Luckily for me people like Brad and others are selling their awesome work, so I've decided to take the plunge and buy one. What I'm curious to know is, has anyone here started their own business by making appearances in their Spidey suit? I've seen websites for others who make event appearances as Spider-man but their suits don't have near the quality of what I see in this thread. I'd love to hear about others' experiences if anyone cares to share how they are making a little extra cash, contributing time to charity, etc.

Hey everyone, I have been lurking around for a month or so and I am going to be making a suit of my own. A little backgound on me is that I have an AA in graphic design and work at a sign shop with access to a laser engraver (for making molds for webbing). I have a question Im sure one of you might be able to help me out with. I purchased a copy of the red/blue costume template and am unsure as how to size it to my specs. I am planning on redoing the pattern I received as I am doing the black costume. I have done up a quick vector outline of the costume so can someone possibly show me how to size it correctly. Oh I am 6' 4", 170 lbs, waist 34, inseem 34. Thanks for all your help in advance.

It's not a good idea to start a business by making appearances as spiderman thats a good way to go about getting sued..
Now charity is a different story, I myself have done a few charity events as A stromtrooper sandtrooper and vader.
And big thanks to brad for the how to on the spidey mask i was planing on trying my hand at making a few, I'm a little burnt out on trooper helmets LOL here is what i am messing with right now trying to get a better color and also trying to photo shop more honeycombs in the face.
I have only changed the color so far

gundam, your pattern looks pretty good, only one thing. i seem to see alot of emphasis put on the muscle shading of paterns and not so much in the boldness of the bricks. but the movie suit muscle shading is barely there. and the bricks are more visable.
it looks nice either way, thats just my opinion.

I bought if my "allaboutme35" on ebay about over 1 month ago and he is not allowed to sell them on ebay anymore so if you want one, contact him on the hype. his name is "spidersuitmaker". Can I ask you a question? Do you sell the magnetic faceshell and magnetic lenses cause I need one to complete my suit.
Thanks
Kevin
No -Im sorry, I dont sell magnetic shells. Just vacuum formed ones. Im just about done with a new sculpt that will offer a deeper, smoother shell.

Well we just got the engraver last wednesday and I am going through training on it today. So as far as selling molds or webs, that probably wont happen for probably a month or so, just to get all the bugs worked out. But I do have all the webs rendered out in vector format I just need help with the sizing so everything comes out right. The vector of the suit I posted earlier was not what the design will look like that I am doing its just there so someone can tell me where to lengthen certain parts to fit my height. Also what type of urethane are you guys using for those who are making webs and spiders?

Hiya folks. I'm working on an article concerning ultimate superhero suits for our "Superhero Guide" (http://www.phillyburbs.com/superheroes/) What I'd be interested in is pictures of completed outfits along with the number of hours of work and the agregate cost including development. You can, if you'd like include your cost to make to-order - we get over 3 million page views during the Halloween season - but I'm not sure if you want that kind of high-profile; I'm not up on the legalities of these things for sale. What I can do is attach an email addy so people can contact you for whatever reason, if you'd like.
I'm interested in all the supersuits - if you know any site/person I should get in touch with to show off a Really Great costume replica, please let me know!
Anyway, please contact me at bbankard@phillyburbs.com if you'd like to do a bit of showing off! Thanks!! I need to have the whole Halloween section updated by Sept. 15, so time is Really of the essence - a whole lot to do, and time is fleeting!

Showing off is one thing for a guy like me that works on costumes but only sell's extra or left over parts and not make them.
But for some of the guys on this site that make spidey suits, it sounds a little bit like a recipe for trouble IMO with that many views. Also i'm sure most of the inquires, exposer like that could generate Wouldn't be that worth it, this hobby isn't for everyone and i am sure most of the people checking your site are looking for Halloween costumes not a rare replica or display piece. Once they find out the price for some of these suits they will back off quickly. The cheapest costume i own is 1k. Also many of us here have spent years trying to perfectly replicate these costumes i myself have been working on Darth vader as seen in star wars a new hope for 2 plus years of my life. So this is really something of dedication and not passing interest.... to look cool for the neighborhood Halloween bash.

But I will show off the vector templates for the webbing that I did. It took me about 8 hours to get these correct, even being extremly good in Illustrator. Enjoy.

I thought I did too, but if you plan to wear it dude, you don't, IMO.
Unless someone has a secret here I don't know about, the webs will require maintenance, gluing them back down, then possibly tearing over time...
On my next suit, I'm having the back spider printed. Too many issues crop up when leaning back, sitting in a chair, I'm always nervous of tearing it.

Hello new guy here. Guess I am so late to start making my very own spidey outfit. Anyways, I've done some research regarding making a suit. I purchased a pattern off at ebay and I am completely ignorant on where to get it printed. I also want to know if Jo-Ann's is the best one out there to buy me the poly/lycra. I reside in CA, US so are there any suggestions? Also, I tried to make some lens frames of mine but it looks so crappy, so I'm looking for the best one out there. I basically want to make a suit like OVDH's. I like Fettster's lenses. I know it's goiing to be expensive, so I'm going to build it part by part :D Basically, I need some suggestion on where to get each part.
So far this is what I know:
Lens/frames- fettster(don't know how to get ahold of him)
Spiders (Back and front) - ?
Raised webs- ollie (also, don't know)
Prints- dye sublimated (I also read something about direct printing being better, don't know where to do this, I know it's poly lycra--I don't know what color to get since I've one printed on white and the other on a slight pink)
Boots-some martial arts shoe which already have
Face shell-for the magnetic lens(don't know where to get them); I think I am not going to use this though cause you can't pull off the spidey kiss:D
Thanks guys.

hey there man, just to help ya out a bit
as far as spiders, I'd say go w/ Brad/ Spidey4fun, his molds were laser cut so the spiders have very clean edges
w/ webs Id say Ollies are the best but as far as I know he no longer sells seperate webs, you might be able to get some from nayef/ Spiderman5 or from Schuurkes
since you havent printed a suit before you may want to go w/ buying a print from someone whos been printing them for a while just to avoid all the testing/ mistake prints youd have to go through. Spidey4fun prints are nice, and I think theres some others who sell prints. Schuurkes sells suit kits that come w/ everything neede to create a great suit for a great price.
Hope this helps out a bit.

Well, the problem with me buying a whole set is the money issue, and I won't be able to get a great print, lens, webbing all in one. what place or website do you guys recommend here in US?
I've researched something about the more poly in the poly/lycra fabric (eg 80/20 instead of 60/40), the more vibrant the color will be.
Also, which one gives more elasticity between the two :D?
Anyone willing to sell raised webs or fettster's lens/frames?

Hello brad,
Can I get some spiders for the back and chest from you, sir.
Thank you very much!
BTW, I have been thinking about this idea on the mask and the suit thing. I did some sketch on paint last night. Basically, I'd like the idea of taking off the mask, and while wearing it, there is minimal problems in terms of alignment(so you could still do the spidey kiss :D). Anyways, it's like a ninja thing, but the top part goes all the way down under your chin(where your chin and neck meets) and the bottom goes all the way to the nose with holes to breathe in(I haven't experienced wearing it, so I don't know if you need the holes). I think you'll to stitch an extra cloth to stitch for the bottom part though. I think it'll work cause I don't think people will look under your chin. Anyways, what do you guys think?
P.S. Thanks SlyGuy for replying. I really appreciate it. I'm still not giving up though :D

Here's a few pics of some samples. My black suit with darker webbing as requested. This is under flash conditions so it looks a little lighter then it actually is to eye.

I agree, but I imagine the 40% is how the suit actually looks to the naked eye.

Brad, if I were you I'd go for a mixture of both the old colour and the 40%, gradiented by hand using the burn tool. You could mimic how light would hit raised webs by following the contours of the suit, similar to what you have achieved with the muscles (but not to the same extent). I definitely wouldn't go any darker though, as they'd be lost like you said.
I really love the new darker web print that you've used on your last couple of suits.

Oh yeah... I get what you're saying. Nice idea. That would give the webbing a contoured look to match the muscles. Nice!!

Cool, glad you agree. Use a fairly large brush set at around 15% opacity for the burn and make 4 passes at it - the light would look really organic if you used a pressure sensitive Wacom tablet like I do. This way the webs won't look so two-dimensional. Look forward to seeing the results if you decide to give it a go.
You're actually making a suit for me at the moment. Can't wait to see it! :spidey:

Hello,
This is my first post on this forum, I don't really know how to start and if there's any particular rules.
I've read your forum many times to learn more about the different ways of "making the perfect Spidey suit" !!
First of all, I'd like ton congratulate you guys. This forum is great and all the works exposed here are ... Amazing :wow: WAOUW !!!
Maybe I got to introduce myself a little before asking for some help, so. My name's Dimitri 'aka' FrenchSpidey here, I'm 23 years old and as you can guess ... a big fan of Spiderman !!
I'm french so, sorry in advance if there's some mistakes in my posts.
I live near Paris, in a small town where, and I'm so sad about that, I won't be able to spin any web (there's no high buildings !!)
Let's talk about the suit !! :whatever:
I've that crazy idea to make a suit for my own for years now, but I couldn't because of a lack of money and materials.
I've discovered your topic approximativly 6 months ago, but I already knew the work that some of you did before (like Spidey4Fun) ... and I seriously started to rethink about it and even more since I saw the Schuurkes suit ... Wonderfull and so movie like ... Love it !!
I've so many questions but I don't want to disturb you, I'll reread some pages before asking for some help or maybe more if I don't succeed in all the "making the suit" steps !!
Thanks in advance for your help.
See you soon guys,
and keep going on doing great work.

Hey thanks Kuriatey. We will be doing different applications for the suit but right now the (Crush Glass Blue Lycra) is catching a lot of people's eyes and that is what I want. If the character is in more of a dark tone he would not stand out as much in the way of advertising. We will get more on the dark side of things as the character becomes more popular.
Once the second book is out on the market I will be gunning for TV morning shows to talk about the book. Most likely this same suit will be used, and of course it will be a completed suit if I am asked to wear it for the shows that I appear on, hopefully.
Right now I am just in the mode for Chicago I will be leaving for Wizard Con to round up my next to last couple artists for Knight Seeeker 2 : Crimes of Passion. Never been to Chicago so this should be interesting. Then of course there is Dragon Con. I have been doing well with my goals body wise and still want to eat right, work-out hard and look the best I can as I model Knight Seeker. It's all part of being a superhero, I have to live with that almost 24/7.
Talk to you guys soon and thanks for keeping the board going. Its nice to see that you guys are doing fantastic work. I know I am not geared to Spidey suit wise, but I do appreciate what you guys put into your work.

Its exactly the same webbing pattern so it should fit fine. Smaller suits may need to be stretched a little though before gluing the webbing down. The webbing size is bigger then Ollie's but smaller then Nayefs. The measurement on my webbing from the centre of the mask to the tip of the belt is 76cm. Ollies is 72cm. Nayefs 80cm.

Thanks Urban and Mexican Spider,
I may have boots for the suit by late fall.
But here is the front shot, the visor will still have to be in the -V- shape and I have a real mirrored style one coming in from Auzzi Country, still this is a really cool suit that was made for me to wear.

that's looks great. I can see all the detail that went into making it look plated and armored. The shoulder plates and gauntlet gloves look awesome!
