That costume bid isn't worth it. They are charging $700 for a costume that isn't even assembled. Brad (Spidey4Fun) will sell you a Spidey movie costume with urethane spiders and rubber souled boots (means you can walk around in the costume, outdoors) for $780. (A printed version of the spiders, would be cheaper). Why pay $700 for something that will require you to do the labor, when you can pay about the same price for slightly better quality as well as being complete? I won't say that the quality isn't there. Because you can construct an impressive suit (as shown in the acution) but still.

Brad told me that not only is urethane webbing far more costly, but it is impractical. He has not found any method (devised on his own or acquired from others) that permanently adheres the web to the suit. But you could send Brad a pm and he will tell you, if you want to take the risk.

I wasn't trying to say that the quality of the materials in the auction, were not good. I just felt like it was paying too much considering there is no labor involved. Unless they do the web printing for you. The suit you could make has vast potential, but unless you are experinced, there is no gurantee that it will come out as nice as the auctioner's version. Brad does have a slightly different style, but that is because he only has one urethane raised webbing suit. They apparently are not very practical for long term purposes.

The best comprimise is printed webbing and urethane spiders. Although I do have to reglue the legs of the back spider almost every time after I wear the suit.

Brad, any more time spent on the Reilly suit? I'd love to have one this Halloween. Let me know. How has married life been treating you? I hope all is well!

i know all about the suits,
my issue was that you seem to be dismissing that ebay suit as less quality knowing that urethane webbing suits costs as you quote "far more costly"

Arach Knight
06-11-2008, 11:24 PM
I never said that the ebay suit was bad. The thing is...it isn't a suit. It's suit materials that have not been fully processed (web paterns etc). If I told you that I saw an auction for an unassembled Lexus for $30,000 you'd probably look at me a little oddly, because you could buy one fully constructed for $34,000. That is the way I see it between Brad's suit and the ebay suit. His price includes materials and labor where as the auction has nearly the same price for none of the work.

young-nyc
06-11-2008, 11:41 PM
but the point you're missing is a fully assembled urethane suit, costs at least 4x that amount. so in retrospect, it's a good deal...i would agree with you though if a fully assembled suit only cost a few hundred dollars than what the unassembled one went for.

The Reily suit is the suit wore by Ben Reily when he took on the role of Spider-Man after Peter retired to get a real job and take care of Mary Jane and the expected baby (terrible times).

http://www.samruby.com/Spiderverse/Spiderman/CostumeSpiderBen.gif

Then there is Ben Reily's original costume as The Scarlet Spider

http://hyperion2000.free.fr/Bios/ScarletSpider.JPG

But the costume in question that Brad is working on, is the first one (affectionately referred to as Spider-Ben), not the second one (Scarlet Spider).

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff247/idkimboredlol/Picture028-1-1-1.jpg Thanks Spiderman C Looks Really Nice. You know I find it very interesting that I noticed that when people post there suit on the board sometimes they forget to post a photo of the back spider which I think plays an important role as well as the chest spider. I dont know I guess because I like to see photos of the entire suit front and back part of the suit. One big question I do have for all you suit makers though is that I also noticed that people that are taller than 5'8 the back spider looks alittle too small on them. I guess because the Lycra streches alot depending on the persons height. Do you suitmakers make different sizes of Spiders or is there only a one sized spider front and back for all heights? By the way Spiderman C how tall are you? You look really tall in these photos. And thanks again. ;)

I'm sure all spiders vary between makers and molds.. but as far as I know each suit maker only uses one size spider..

Also, that is not me modeling in the pictures, it's my neighbor :woot:.. he's 6'0.

LoL and I thought it was you in the suit. Yeah the person in the suit is really tall. I know that suit wouldn't fit me because im only 5'8 LOL im really short although im slim on the waist 32' and I see now why Suitmakers say that Urethane fits better on tall people. But anyways about the Spiders I kinda figured that they only used one size.. although it doesn't fit well if the person is tall and it's only a one sized mold cut Spider, Because you can tell as the Lycra Stretches the Spider looks really small on a person thats' 6'0 and over. Maybe Suitmakers could start making the correct size of the spiders for the correct height of the person because you could tell the difference in the size of the Spider and the height of the person well maybe at least I can but then again you wouldn't want a suit (Not worn) with a big fat Spider because when the Suit is not worn the Lycra Shrinks as well.

Urethane webbed suits are expensive for a reason; they're hard to put together, and your suit has to have more exact matches upon making it.. otherwise it will come out looking crumby in some areas.

On the other hand..it's really the only way to get the look, and have the durability you want.
If there was truly a way to get 'good' cheap webs, urethane webs would be out of the market.. I know I wouldn't make them!

You should try RD-407 Mask Making Latex (probably need to order it - not too expensive). Tint it about 1:10 or so with black artist's acrylic paint. Get a small tip squeeze bottle and apply it just like Tulip. I applied full webbing to a costume almost a year ago and it's still supple & flexible (unlike Tulip, which I've also tried). You can thin it with a LITTLE water if necessary, which helps it soak into the fabric and really lock on. Hope this helps. :yay:

Nice Comic Suit Brad I like how you displayed the Urethane Spiders front and back. I also like the Comic style of mask that your using for this suit or if your using it for this suit. It looks Fantastic are you also going to sell this type of suit as a Comic Suit just like the printed on that you have but with these type of Urethane Spiders?

As for you Spiderman C I really like your suit on ebay although I do have a question when you explained about the rich colors on the suit. Where did you have that done. How did you get the colors of your suit to come out like that. you said that the colors are very rich/movie realistic and do not wash out when being worn because of the dye sublimation a costly procedure that gives amazing results. if you dont mind how did you get your colors to come out rich like that I give you alot of credit.

The sad part is someone's probably going to fall for that and bid on it.

What's the point of advertising it with a picture of the guy drinking a beer with the suit on? Ridiculous in my opinion.

I dont like the fact that theres a guy advertisting a suit drinking a beer and the suit looks cheap also. I would rather buy a good quality suit with real Urethane than buy something that looks cheap with Acrylic Paint for $1000, The Spider Designs dont look great either. ;(

I've recently started playing with Inventor. This software allows 3D animation of mechanical drawings. Allows the user to give each component mass so fairly true to life machanical animations are possible. But Im only just getting started.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a mold for the raised webbing

StanLee Wannabe
07-02-2008, 06:20 AM
hawktimeman, that's like asking for the secret formula to Coke.

The people who have made molds for the webbing dont want to give it away because they make a pretty penny selling it.

If what you want is just a casting of the webbing to put on a suit, you can find that from time to time on ebay, but lately that hasn't been happening because people dont want someone buying the webbing then making a mold of it and recasting it.

Personally, I see both sides of the issue. I dont think people should have their livelihood taken away, but I also think there should be a free flow of ideas and methods here in this thread. For example, it took me forever to get answers to how the eyes were made for the costume. Eventually people answered, but I think that was only because eyes aren't such a big deal.

Thanks, those are some good pieces. Except I'm more looking for somebody willing to sell one they have for fair price... I don't want to pay the markup prices like on that site..

Taylor
07-04-2008, 10:38 AM
That may be difficult. The costume pieces were extremely limited, and now are all in the hands of dealers, or collectors who realize their worth. In the end I suppose that a "fair price" is simply what someone is willing to pay since I'm not sure that there is any way to come up with a true appraised value like you could with a toy or comic. You could also look here www.yourprops.com. It's an online "museum" for private collectors to show off their treasures. I know that there are several costume swatches there. You could P.M. the owners and see if anyone is willing to sell theirs. Unfortunately those costume pieces are becoming very few and far between.

P.S. Type the word "spider" in the movie search INSTEAD of Spider-Man or some other variation. It will bring up a lot more results.

Ah, Dr Spidey.

What a great guy, i still can belive you hand sewn your suit.

the colours were indeed rich. I was able to get the colour to soak right through the material. the only problem was that you had to allow to upto 8% shrinkage so it was hard to guestimate the print size.

Hey Fettster,

Great to hear from you. Thanks again for the complements - I really enjoyed working with you to make the suit happen and I still love the suit. The only reason I am even considering selling it is that in order to keep the webs from drying up and cracking, I had to make a "fake mannequin" from a mannequin head, a stuffed old long sleeve shirt, and stuffed socks to keep the webbed portions of the costume stretched out in between wearings. The stuffed Spidey hangs out in my study on the couch so every time someone walks into my study - It looks like I killed Spiderman. My wife is a good sport about it though. Are you still making Spidey stuff at all? I know there are some folks on the board here that would love to get their hands on some of your frames and a print. Several people have commented on how great your colors look.

How did you customize your frames? Paint?

dr.spidey
07-13-2008, 07:50 AM
SpidermanC, thanks for the complement. I did indeed sew the costume by hand as I don't have a sewing machine or Serger and I really didn't want to buy one. I used what's called a backstitch and put two layers in each seam. I then oversewed the edges so the inside looks clean. I had actually never sewed anything before this but the motivation to make a Spidey costume at a reasonable cost was enough to learn. I also did the webbing by hand with two layers of Tulip paint - a matte black layer on the bottom and a silver layer on top, to try to emulate the raised silver webbing with black sides. I actually used a small acrylic paint brush to fade the edges of each web into the next so it looks more like webbing than overlapping layers of paint. I know it doesn't look as good as the webbing pulled from a mold but I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Just took a lot of patience and time.

On a different note - Hombre arana your Ollie costume looks amazing. I hadn't seen one of his with the silver frames before. I think it's the best SM3 red/blue suit I've seen.

Yeah, Ollie suits look sweet, but the main problem with them, aside from the breaking webs, is Ollie himself. His customer support and turn around time isn't what it should be for the $2500 you drop for one.

Just ask Gundam about his Ollie experience, I nearly got burnt one a set of webbing, I didn't fortuneately thanks to Paypal.

yours are the last costumes I still have to finish after a horrible year at university/internship and the problems I had with the productions of the suits. All 3 costumes will be ready to ship within the next 3 weeks and I hope you're not too mad about me because of the long wait.

Best wishes

I thanked him for the e-mail back after months of nothing....and pretty much told him if he comes threw no harm no foul as they say. But it's been a month and no suit or even a reply to an e-mail.... But then again this is the 2nd time he told me my suit would be ready in 2 or 3 weeks time:csad: this is also not counting the 2 or 3 times he said he sent me replacement webbing and paint that never got here.. Which is odd becuase i deal with guys in Germany all the time and never have a problem with shipment.

Put the mask on your head, super glue gel is best, stand in front of a mirror and stick them down. It will hurt but they will be postioned correctly.

ha ha, get an armature, mannequin head or make a masking tape cast of your head stuffed with tshirts. Then glue the frames down. Prestretched is the way to go to ensure your glue stays.

LOL?? I would not advice that! First of all you would never be able to position the frames right using this method. Secondly, the fumes from the glue would burn your eyes!! I would recommend letting the mask air out for at least a couple hours until you put it on; specially if you glued webs down.

Try using Loctite I believe it one of the best to use.. the Gel works the best make sure though that you use a tooth pick to apply little dots of glue behind the Spider before placing it onto the suit. Im not sure though about the Lenses.. although what I herd from other suit makers is that they use Loctite Gel for the Lenses as well.

Thats how it is now and days when people buy suits on ebay they buy them then they want to see if they can sell it for a bigger price than what they got it for to make some profit. Ive actually seen alot of really nice suits that have been sold on ebay that I even had the intention of buying it but keeping it for myself and trust me Im one of those guys that would give that suit a good home. You know I really dont see any difference between a Urethane webbing suit and a printed webbing suit or maybe just the fact the the Urethane webbing Cost way too expensive compare to the Printed one and the fact that the Urethane suit really needs to be well taken care of otherwise the Urethane webbing starts to fall apart and then you need lots of glue to glue it back together. You can always go to a office depot store and Buy these Silver Metalic Markers for $3.00 for a pack of 5 and use them to go over the weblines for a Printed webbing suit..that will save you lots of money and it will look really nice in the end as well it will look better than using Arcylic paint too because Arcylic paint will leave you with crack lines on the paint. But it does take lots of cautious time and Patience if you choose to go over this procedure using a metalic marker.

Here's an idea. It wasnt mine but I heard it worked well. Just need to make sure the hooks are on the shell so if you choose to wear it without the shell you dont have the hooks in your face. Also... be very careful not to get the hooks on any other part of the suit. The velcro hooks will make big white fluff balls in the lycra threads if it get caught.

Hey Spiderman C, Why did you go with a gunmetal color for the webbing?

looks great tho.

In certain off set pictures, it's actually how the webs look without light reflection. Their webs normally only have the whitish/metallic look when there's a bunch of lights or movement going on. As you can tell in some of my pictures, it still has that look in the right light.

Hey zinje, why you always have to be an a$$ for?

lol, that was my mask in the first place that Chris had helped me get. I sold it to Bryan he then put it up for auction duh. Any ways I wished you lived closer, I could show you what real muscle power could do. Spiderman C send me an email.

On a nicer note, Taylor I have almost completed your project. I will try to call you later bro.

Thank you,
Ernie

*cough* powertrip *cough*

I am a lurker here mostly but why do you change the background on your pics?

Hey guys. I'm new to these boards, and I really want to start making a spiderman suit. I've never made a suit before, But I would like to learn how. Does anyone know if there is like a step by step tutorial or something to make a spiderman suit? lol. I don't think there is one, but someone (one of you) should do it, next time you make a suit. Just take lots of pictures of every step you do, and write down what you do.

I understand that you must fristly make a pattern, and get it sub dyed on to lycra, but can anyone tell me what kind of materials are used? Also, what materials did they use for the movie, and are you guys using the same method as the movies?

My next concern is I won't know how to make the webs. I would like to make 3d webbing, just like the movies, and I know that they are made using a mould, but does anyone know how to make a good mould? as in, not crappy looking (movie quality I guess).

thanks.:yay:

Your best bet is to buy a set of webs and a print from someone who has experience. Getting all the testing and trials out of the way for a custom print and making your own molds gets extremely expensive quickly.

I'd recommend a print from spidey4fun, he also has urethane spiders, frames and webbing. However, webbing is a pain to glue and maintain not to mention it's expensive. I would just get printed webbing on the suit itself; more cost effcient, looks great and o worry about the wear.

I've got a dye sub pattern with 3d webs and spiders if you'd want just a pattern, but you'd have to find a dye sub printer and have test prints and what not.

Good luck bro.

oh mate, that would be awesome.

I am actually kind of looking to make a more movie replica suit, but If you could give me a pattern, it would be so sweet, because I would like to make my own pattern, but It would be good to have someone else's as a guide.

my email is braden_bruz@hotmail.com thanks a ton man.

Can anyone give me an estimate on how much it will cost me to create a suit from scratch with urethane webs?

or how much would it cost to buy a set of webs, and from who can I buy it from?

question for yall, i have been on this board long enough to complete a suit myself, so its been a few months.

I ordered a 3-d web print off of ebay from allaboutme (one peice red and blue movie version), I just completed it and it is a tad to small. I 'am 5'11" and I suppose it would fit a person 5'10" and below. some of it was hand stitched but the rest is zig zagged with a machine. I would rate the sewing at a B+. I would include a set of frames/lenses from Brad (spidey4fun). comes with the 3 invisible zipper escape from the back. suit is ready to wear.

Here is the question. How much do those of you that have sold the suits before think I can sell/start mine for on ebay? by the way nice job kuriatey with the $1000+ sale recently.

Started on another Schuurkes kit. :) Only cut the fabric, and painted the webs so far.
In the picture of the chest, I hadn't given the webs a second coat of paint, nor had I scraped paint off the sides yet.

thanks. Yeah he's one of the guys that makes the best Spiderman replica suits you've seen on the Board and I mean... THE BEST replica suit you could posibly find out there. Although it's very hard to get a hold of him. There are few that have been waiting for months to recieve there suit from him or to try to reach him. I don't think he makes anymore Ollie suits if he did they would run for $2,000 a piece I believe so because I was also interested in buying one from him a while ago. He might sell patterns although im not sure about Urethane Webbing. You could try emailing him hopefully he will respond not sure but it's always worth a try.

I'd recommend avoiding Ollie. his work is great, but customer service is lousy. Brad sells printed unsewn suits, urethane webbing, spiders and frames. As for Ollie's suit being "THE BEST replica suit you could posibly find out there" I'd put my vote for a Shrukkes suit.
