According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Samuel L. Jackson is the highest-grossing actor of all time. Jackson’s films reportedly have earned more than $7.4 billion in total grosses. It helps that Jackson, 63, has appeared in more than 100 movies over the course of his multi-decade career.

Which films helped boost Jackson’s tallies?

Well, his involvement in the Marvel superhero blockbusters, from “Thor” ($181M) to “Iron Man 2” ($312M), have boosted his profile. Then there are George Lucas’s “Star Wars” prequels … massive. And Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” kicked a healthy $357M to his grosses.

And he isn’t slowing down. Jackson has four films on the docket for 2011, and an additional three in 2012. For now. There’s always time for him to add more.

I'm not surprised due to being in so many movies and alot of high grossing franchises

This isn't new. He has been the the highest grossing actor for years. And those numbers for Thor, Iron Man 2 and Jurassic Park must be American box office only. But it isn't weird considering the franchises he's involved with. Star Wars, Marvel, Jurassic Park and a plethora of others.

Yeah, this is kinda old.

But it also goes to show you how remarkable this guy's career has been and at such an unusual age!

I like how flexible he can be playing a good guy or a bad guy in a movie.

Is Harrison Ford number two? Nah, it's probably one of the Harry Potter kids, right?

He's 63?! I thought he was 40 ish!

But in terms of his box office pull, it's probably due to Pulp Fiction, Star Wars prequels, and Marvel Movies.

I'm certainly happy for him. It's been a blessing for me to see his career. Mace Windu is my favorite Star Wars character.

Also, if you have never had the occasion to see the lesser-known "Caveman's Valentine", do it.

Years ago Harrison Ford was the title holder. He might be more instrumental in the grosses of those movies in that he was often the star or co- star of his movies. S.Jackson was often a cameo or small part guy.

It may be his best role but Pulp Fiction didn't make any serious money at the box office.

What I dig about Jackson is how he's able to be versatile without really being versatile, you know? He plays a variation of himself in a lot of flicks, but no one ever really *****es about it, because it works. I think his role as Mace Windu was what really made me take notice, mostly due to the different look he sported.

It's not a surprise Sam Jackson is the highest grossing actor today, since he's usually cast in almost 70-85% of movies. LOL

With all due respect to SL Cool J, he'll be 63 a few days before Christmas. How long can he realistically continue playing the action hero?

Perhaps but 100 million off an 8 million dollar budget aint nothing to scoff at.

When I think Sam Jackson, I'm really not thinking "action hero" :p :p

He's never been that kind of guy, despite being in many action movies.

I enjoy Jackson greatly, don't get me wrong. But he's not a very good actor...He's the same damn person in every movie he's in, just varying degrees of angry. But I guess that speaks volumes about his natural charisma - he is so well loved as an actor despite it.

I actually take back that comment, I had thought Pulp earned about half that. 100 mill isn't a bad total for most movies, especially one on that budget.

You could say that about alot of popular actors like Dicaprio and Denzel...

No you can't.

Dicaprio and Denzel are brilliant actors who can lose themselves in a character.

Dicaprio WAS Howard Hughes. Denzel WAS Malcolm X.

No, you want guys like Stratham, McConaughey, or, I don't know, Bruce Willis. Those dudes play pretty much the same guy in everything they're in.

No he's not. He plays nearly every character the same way, which by definition is NOT a character actor. Phillip Seymor Hoffman is a character actor. Malcolm McDowell is a character actor. These guys turn into a completely different person with different traits, voices, demeanor, etc that separates them from their real life selves and their other roles. Samuel Jackson does not do this.

Those two, no. Look at aviator, shutter island, malcom x, training day...Others like Clooney, yes. But my point is that others can get away with it because they're amazing actors. IMO, Jackson's quality of acting is not equal to the fame and recognition he receives. Again, I love the guy, but I'm just making an observation.

11-03-2011, 07:30 AM
But he's still cool though. :o

I think what separates him from other actors like that is that most filmmakers would have no problem with putting him in their flick. None of them have ever said, "Jackson would bring down the quality of my film." He's been in indie flicks, blockbusters, B movies, cartoons, etc.

I used to think this about Dinero, but the reality is that people WANT the same character. Nobody will pay to see Jackson play a nerdy salesman in a comedy. I'm sure he has acting ability but is typecast. Jim Carey made a serious movie once and nobody went to see it.

That can be said about many actors that the people like. Look at Johnny Depp, people seem to like him playing the quirky roles. Not as many people went to see Public Enemies. I personally think his best role was in Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
