Just got back from seeing Man on a Ledge.
Not a bad movie. I had never heard of it before tonight, so when I got home, I checked it out on RT at saw the Tomatometer at 32%. I was actually shocked by the really bad reviews. It's not an intelligent film at all, but I was entertained throughout the whole thing. And Sam Worthington (who I normally can't stand) was pretty good in this.
At the very worst, the movie is completely inoffensive. At the best, it's good, but it's not something I could watch over and over. I saw it, I liked it enough, the end.

Just got back from Episode 1, and I really enjoyed it, just as much as I did in 1999. The 3D in the Final duel and Podrace was stunning, and I get many compliments on my anakin helmet. LOL.
All In all, I loved it, and I missed having star wars on screen. Hopefully this makes enough, I really wanna see Episode 3 in 3D, now that I know they actually put effort into this.

Chronicle. Finally got to see it. Great film, really strong characterisations to go with the simple but effective plot. A story about friendship and the misplaced use of power that anyone can relate to. Really cool action scenes, I love the fight at the end. And the "found footage" technique is well done. A lot of the shots are framed like actual shots in a normal film, especially towards the end when Andrew takes control of the camera, so you don't need to worry about suffering a head ache from constant camera movement. I like how at certain points it changed to different cameras perspectives, like CCTV or news footage etc.

A alright little crime thriller. But they mostly wasted the cast. I would've love to have seen Christopher Nolan do this one with zero budget as he could've done the multiple perspective thing with pinache.

Thunderball-8/10
A little inconsistent in tone, as the opening scene and ending were much sillier than the rest of the movie, but still very entertaining. The underwater sequences might be the best filmed scenes I've seen in the series so far. I was somewhat disturbed by the very end. Bond and Domino left that henchman-turned-helper in the middle of the ocean with nothing but a life preserver while they caught a plane ride out. What an *******.
Warrior-8/10
Unique in that it built two characters up as "the contender"; I don't think I've seen that in any other sports movie. Both storylines were built up well, and Tommy and Brendan were believably shown as equally good fighters, more or less. I found myself wanting more resolution in the end, though. Did Brendan and the dad move toward reconciliation? Did he share the money with his brother? Did Tommy go to prison for deserting the military? I didn't need all these questions answered in detail, but a few more minutes to tie up the loose ends would have been nice.

Undisputed II
Any martial arts fans who haven't seen this film are doing themselves a disservice. It's amazing. What's also amazing is that screen fighting this spectacular can be filmed on a low budget, in a couple of days, with minimal resources, when hand to hand combat in big budget Hollywood tent poles is terrible.

Watchmen: Director's Cut - 8/10
I still really like this film and admire Snyder for what he did. Though I do believe they didn't need to be as true to the comic as possible. The film would have done just fine on its own if it had the right ideas and carried them through with good enough execution and vision. The David Hayter draft was certainly a good start in the right direction with some refinement with Snyder's eye. Snyder certainly doesn't lack vision, and he could have pulled it off. Yet I give him credit for wanting to do this. Considering the direction they went in, I think it worked really well. Could have been better if they didn't have the GN constricting the script and actors and dialogue though. But there are some scenes that truly shine. The Manhatten Mars sequence was perfect. As a comic fan, it's a joy to watch with how true they stayed to it, but you know, with this, I found myself remembering a lot of dialogue from the comic that was contained in this film, and that was one of the flaws. IIt became too faithful. Now again, I don't want to sound sound fickle like a lot of fanboys, but truly, at the end of the day, have a vision and make it the best possible while staying true to the material, but it doesn't need to be frame by frame and word for word. This is a film. Watchmen as a comic, may be cinematic in some aspects, but what about as a film, can't it be more? Shouldn't it be? I think so. It just needed a lot more breathing room cinematically. But I respect Snyder immensely for wanting to stay true and making that decision. It plays as a great tribute to the GN. But I can't help but feel it should be more than a tribute.
The Rock - 9/10
Cage Rating - 10/10
Pretty much the ideal kind of action film. One of my favorites. Nic Cage and Sean Connery teaming up to stop a virus on Alcatraz? I mean come on. I would buy that sentence if I could.

It had great performances from everyone but the story was jumpy mostly due to the editing. There was a lot of interesting points from his life but you didn't too deep into it besides the Lindbergh case. They pretty much pass though all the controversial stuff he did and focus on his relationships. The make up was great except for Armie Hammer.

So much violent goodness. I mean I don't remember a time I've actually reacted to an action film so much with its violence. It makes me more irritated we are getting a PG-13 sequel.
Another thing I realized: Notice when there is any shred of character development, an action scene cuts all that short in the same scene. It's as if they're shooting, driving away, and running from any kind of depth. It's hilarious yet awesome. Bullets, explosions, and mass blood are nice reminders to keep this film simple and fun.
This film is basically Michael Bay's porn.

Very solid, but don't expect Training Day/Man on Fire Denzel, I think he plays a very stripped down version of those characters. Sadly he doesn't get any memorable quotes like he did in the other films. None the less, it's a very entertaining meat and potatoes action film. Ryan Reynolds works better when he's not acting like Ryan Reynolds oddly enough. His character appreciates the gravity of the situation and acts accordingly.
Even though they clearly aimed for a PG-13, I'm glad they stuck with the R rating, it would've been a shame to get rid of some of the brutality of the film, as it really added an exclamation mark to various points of the film.
Lastly, props to the casting director for hiring Robert Patrick and Ruben Blades, it was great to see them again.

A total package. I laughed out loud at parts, felt genuine attachment to the characters, and was always interested in the portrayal of how changes in film technology affected the industry. The look of the film, from the cinematography to the period set design, is spot-on, and Jean Dujardin is perfect in the lead role; he is very expressive (a must for a silent film) but still portrays subtle emotions when he needs to.

As great if not, better than Cloverfield. I did not expect this to be as good as I thought it would be. Not knowing anything going in except a few scant details really benefited the overall experience. Basically, anyone who digs comic books would probably find something to love or like about this movie. I loved the classic archetypes of film and staples of comic books, all rolled into this very simple, very well told story. A well cast film where all the characters are likeable. You know who you hate and like. The arcs that the characters go through are all well told within these archetypes and staples, but it still feels fresh and new. I just love this idea. If this found footage thing is here to stay (and it looks like it is) hopefully we can keep getting quality stuff like this. It's just superheroes stripped down to something very simple, and that's great. I want a sequel. There's definitely potential.

I can tell the people making this movie wanted to put the Bond series on a more epic scale than they had before. They pulled it off very well; the concept of "secret agent leads gun-wielding ninjas into secret base inside a volcano" is tough to pull off without the movie being too over-the-top to take at all seriously (i.e. not getting to the point of self-parody), but I was sold.

Bleh. Shaky, way too close, poorly cut action, predictable double crosses, delusions of grandeur, and groan inducing blocks of exposition. The two leads aren't bad (though I do think there are stretches where Washington is on auto-pilot) but that doesn't do nearly enough to save this. This makes me appreciate the light, well choreographed, and immensely more entertaining Haywire even more.

Another great film for the start of 2012. Liam Neeson proves he is awesome once again. So many great underlying philosophical themes and ideas in the film as well. The plane crash scene was so loud in my theater, it just worked so well.

I bought it immediately when it finally hit dvd, and it's not quite as good as my memories of it are. I still like it quite a bit. It's a film that would never be made today. A heart to heart scene where dad is blowing cigarette smoke all over his kid? Dracula calling a 5 year old a *****? Kids with guns? Genuinely scary monsters? Wall-to-wall death? Some of the best practical make-up effects of all time? Would never happen outside of an R rating in the 2nd decade of the 21st century and it would never be the same within it. But it does have its groan worthy cheesy moments (the montage set to a song about shopping? Yeesh.). I like it hell of a lot now, but it was a perfect movie when I was 9.
