Very first shot of the trailer...there is a quinjet crashed into the base of a skyscraper.
Yeah, I only noticed that when Empire pointed it out. That matches some set photos showing Cap, Natasha and Hawkeye getting out of the downed Quinjet in New York.

Reading spoilers doesn't ruin a film for me one bit, because nothing's the same as actualling seeing something happen for yourself on the big screen.
That's true of me, too, but The Avengers is a special case. I have been waiting to see this movie since the summer after I turned nine, when I spent days reading through my older brothers' back issues of the comic books. We used to pass the comics around and talk about how fantastic it would be to see all those four-color images translated into movie form. Now that those dreams are about to be realized, I want to see as much of it as I can fresh, like when I first read the origin of The Vision or the Kree-Skrull War.

Same here. I usually don't mind watching trailers, t.v spots and reading certain spoilers and such but for both The Avengers and TDKR, once big, big stuff begins to leak/reveal itself I'm just unsubscribing.
I don't mind knowing a good deal but ending spoilers and deaths/departures are things I'd rather find out when watching.

I'm the same way. Its all new to me when I see it the first time, even if I know every major plot detail.
I just don't need to be surprised to enjoy a movie.

Depends. Last year, two movies caught me off guard. First was TF3. I knew about Sentinel and all, but what I didn't know, and it came to me as a nice surprise, was Carly's boss working for the Decepticons, and that the Mercedes was actually Soundwave. I didn't see it coming, and it was awesome.
The other was in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the infamous "NO" That one had the whole audience going into gasps. So, sometimes not knowing spoilers makes the movie a bit better first time in.

Yeah, I made the mistake of going to the Toy Story 3 IMDb boards during the time of its release and somebody spoiled the fact that Andy gave up his toys to Bonnie. I was so pissed.
I knew about the "NO" ahead of time, but it was nice to see my sisters' reactions when they saw it.

I won't avoid the TV spots (I think) but I'll have to swear off this place once the movie premiers in other countries. When people start reviewing it and excitedly discussing spoilers, it will be too easy to read too much about it. That is going to be the longest week ever. To cope I'll have to watch a Marvel Films marathon. I've got a five-disk changer that I'll load up and put them all on repeat. That should get me through it. :word:
Good luck!
I'm in one of those other countries so I will not be feeling your pain. :oldrazz::yay::woot:

I can't imagine already knowing about Caesar's "NO!" before actually seeing it. That scene was just so powerful and I think a big part of that was that it was shocking.
That said i'm not too bothered about knowing bits and pieces of a film, but sometimes it is best left unknown, because you get the full emotional response when you see it first.

Its now at 11.3 million. One thing I think that is bad about that version of the trailer having so many views is that some people I know offline think the title has been changed to Avengers Assemble and I have to explain to them that its only in the UK. They say why and I explain the whole tv show thing to them. Needless to say they think it was a stupid decision.

And the meaning behind these stats are...? :hehe:
Late-January thru March (and probably the entire month of April) was expected to be a dry spell for TDKR just as The Avengers marketing monster was hibernating months earlier.
We, as fans, should really stop obsessing over the numbers until both films, at least, reach their climax.
No meaning, just numbers. I didn't see any other thread I could post it in so I just put it in the thread I was already in.

Have you noticed that the specious "not cinematic enough" slam has all but disappeared now that the second trailer is out? For a couple of days that line (and "looks like a TV movie") was parroted gleeful by certain people who took it as a ready-made indictment of Whedon's skills as a director. Those criticisms could only be used in the absence of evidence to the contrary. We've now seen the evidence that disproves these claims, so they had to be abandoned.

As a person who found the first trailer incredibly underwhelming, there were a few scenes that appeared TV-esque and/or Video Game-esque to me.
Take, for instance, the scene where Iron Man is flying inbetween city buildings. I honesty thought that appeared like a cut-scene straight out of Marvel vs Capcom III.

I agree with some that the new trailer is reminiscent of the Transformers franchise, in a good way. The action seems to have that kind of feel to it, at least in the trailer.

To me, that scene (one of four) was lackluster and poorly constructed (visually) for a 250-300 million blockbuster. That's why I voiced my concerns when the first trailer hit the web.
I'm still not sold on Whedon (mostly because I was never a fan of Buffy and Firefly) but we'll see if he delivers the goods on May 4th.

I must be the only person in the world who figured out the "surprise" ending of The Sixth Sense by the end of the first act. As soon as it jumped six month ahead, I knew. Then I spent the rest of the movie looking for the clues that confirmed it. When the big reveal happened everyone around me gasped, but I wasn't surprised. It was still a great movie, though, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You mean the tracking shot of him dogfighting just above the traffic? I gotta disagree. SFX heavy tracking shots like that, where it mixes CGI and real world locations are immensely difficult to shoot, technically speaking. It takes a lot of talent and imagination to pull of a shot like that, and I wouldn't be surprised if in the full movie it goes on for another 10 seconds. That scene looks amazing, and we have to consider that the CGI isn't even finished yet.
From what i've seen this movie seems to have a lot of tracking shots in the action scenes, which is pretty much the most technically complex camera technique. And oh god do they look awesome.
Now all i'm hoping for is that Thor and Cap team up fight is one long tracking shot. It just has to be.
craigdbfan

I'm loving the tracking shots too.
Just based on these trailer alone it's fairly evident that tracking shots will be incredibly prevalent throughout the movie.

Out of curiosity, I checked out gameplay videos for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Nothing in them looks even remotely similar to the effects sequences in The Avengers. There must be some deluxe, $250 million version of the game out there if anyone can find any images that equal what we've seen in either trailer.

Anyone saying it looks like a screenshot of a video game is clearly living in denial. Or has access to games to normal public hasn't.

LOL. Yes indeed I have. The truth is a wonderful thing.

This is the scene he's referring to. How this possibly can look "bad" to anyone baffles me. The compositing/rendering look great. The lighting and shadows are balanced and the flying itself look great.

Well of course they would to you. :whatever: Take for instance another trailer I was watching, had a football field blow up from underground, the effects looks terribly fake and something from a bad SyFy movie, but I realized the effects weren't anywhere being completed and it would've been stupid of me to come online cry, moan and compare uncompleted cgi to a video game.

I think the battle will be centered in the city, but both IM and Thor (and maybe even Quinjet) will be tasked to fight the enemies like that leviathan we saw in the trailer in the sky, so we won't only get the ground fights.
I'm definitely hoping we get to see the Quinjet in aerial action in the movie, I'm surprised the trailers have not shown the Hellicarrier yet, I wonder if they are saving it for the film.

I don't care what anybody else thinks. That was my opinion. And several posters here agree with me. The scene in motion did not appear gorgeous or flow fluidly, to me. Now, the CGI/SFX might have been unfinished, but that still did not make the scene appear any better.

If you can't see it, then what's the point? The CGI/Green-Screen did not mesh well, in my opinion. Now, did I state that the film scene IS indeed a cutscene from Marvel vs Capcom? No, I made comment regarding the quality of that scene to a cutscene from a video game because the comparison is valid, in my opinion, especially when the film has a budget of 250-300 million. Iron Man flying through the city in trailer one appeared incredibly mediocre visually to the shots and scenes of Iron Man flying/battling in the SB spot and trailer two.
Like I reiterated before, I don't care if you take my comment seriously, or not, but it's my opinion. And I'm not going to fold on it simply because a few people don't agree with it.

There's nothing wrong with the rendering or compositing though...
It can be your opinion but you're wrong about it not meshing well as everything that is necessary to make a rendering work is in that shot (proper lighting and shadows on the metal, it bounces and reflects very well). You're talking about "green screen" but they're not using a matte background but an actual live action shot and integrating the Iron Man model in there.
I'm sorry to be blunt but you have no idea what you're talking about.

No, you said 'I honesty thought that appeared like a cut-scene straight out of Marvel vs Capcom III' which apparently people are finding a bit hard to swallow because simply put only a blind man couldn't tell the difference. Now if you don't like the way the shot looks then fine, whatever, seems like everyone is an fx expert these days but if you make a foolish and nonsensical comparison like you did then you should expect to be called out on it.

I didn't state this scene, in particular, was green-screen. That was referenced to the other scenes on the trailer that did consist of the green-screen, or certainly appear to consist of it.
How is my interpretation wrong exactly? It's my interpretation and my analysis based on what my eyes perceived of the scene.
I'm sorry, but no amount of lighting and rendering 'explanations' can compare to Iron Man flying through the city in the first trailer and Iron Man being chased around the city by the invaders in trailer two. One clearly was (significantly) superior over the other.

It might have been a bit hyperbolic, but it sent my point across. I did not appreciate the CGI-work in trailer one. I expected far better, in terms of visuals.

That's OK. I thought the SFX in TDKR was so blah, I'll skip that movie altogether in the theater and wait for it to come on HBO. I didn't care much for the plot either. What impressed me was the budjet Whedon had for Serenity.
Indeed. I said this in the Whedon thread as well, but Serenity's budget was about half those of Reese Witherspoon's last few romantic comedies. From that same year, other movies that had significantly higher budgets than Serenity include Hitch (its budget was $31m more than Serenity's), Be Cool ($14m more), Bewitched (more than double), Zathura ($26m more), Just Like Heaven ($19m more) and The Pacifier (that's right, the one where Vin Diesel babysat some kids, and that one's budget was almost $17m more!). I mention Zathura specifically because it had roughly the same production values as Serenity, imo, but a very different price tag (not to mention a much smaller scope). When you consider all that Joss was able to accomplish compared to those, creating such a fully-realized sci-fi universe and exciting action sequences, I'd say it was pretty impressive.
Whedon's budget for the Avengers is reportedly over SEVEN times Serenity's budget. This will be quite the spectacle, I'm sure.

after watching that movie, i knew whedon was completely capable of handling space battles, or alien battles, which transformers failed...
so far this movie has met all my checklist except for one: whether we will see thor's full potential...
You know, there's a big kerfuffle going on about Thor over at AICN. I don't know your feelings on the subject but to me the physically strongest Marvel character is the Hulk. Period. That's not to say Thor isn't a powerhouse...he obviously is. I just think it's silly to think any other hero is as strong as the Hulk. Some of the fans over at AICN are adamant that Thor is stronger and unless he's portrayed thus in the movie it will be a fail. Whatever...I'll just settle for Thor being a badass and using Mjolnir in a cool way and doing some weather and lightning stuff. I mean, Thor can do all that AND you want him to be the strongest, too? Sheesh, just put him on God Mode already!
Oh, wait...

Well Thor is initially stronger than Hulk but Hulk has the whole "strength increases with anger" thing working for him so he's definately able to become quite a big stronger than Thor. However I don't just want to see Thor using Mjolnir and creating weather in the film, I want him to be shown as having a high level of super strength (although inferior to that of Hulk's).
Are the people over at AICN wanting Thor to be shown as being more powerful than Hulk overall, or are the specifically talking about the strength department.

To me, I don't have a problem with Hulk being called the physically strongest character. From what I understand, his strength is limitless. But physical strength isn't all there is to power. I would say Thor is the most powerful of the Avengers, seeing as how he combines incredible physical strength with a myriad of other abilities the Hulk doesn't have. It's the Superman effect. Sure, someone can be plenty strong, but it's the times when physical strength isn't the answer that you want someone like Thor.

You're preaching to the choir, bro. I didn't say the Hulk was the most powerful I said I think of him as the strongest. And yes, obviously I want to see Thor portrayed on film as having super strength as well as his other stuff...but I think people who expect them to portray Thor as having strength SUPERIOR to Hulk's are in for a letdown. I don't care what the comics have retconned or what the Official Comic Handbooks say the movie is going to showcase the characters differently. IM is the techweenie/energy projector, Cap is the great hand-to-hand fighter/leader, Hawkeye has awesome hand/eye, Hulk has unbelievable strength, Widow has a killer bod...and Thor has a little of all of the above. :)

Yeah I like to look at Thor as a jack of all trades, he has a very high level of super strength, is a very skilled hand to hand combatant, and is also a seriousl long range threat (Mjolnir, weather creation/control, god blast etc).
I won't mind if Hulk is portrayed as being physically stronger and Hawkeye being the primary "long range" guy since those are their specialties and I also want EVERYONE to have awesome showings. :woot:

Jus to let everyone know the trailer views on youtube just crossed 14 million views.
The day after the trailer came out I was watching it at work and a student of mine saw me watching something and when I told her that it was THE AVENGERS trailer she said "Oh God, yes. It's ALL OVER FACEBOOK!"

The numbers have to be very encouraging for Marvel/Disney. With 13.7 iTunes downloads in 24 hours, 14 million YouTube views in one week for one version of the video, millions more through various websites, they know that the mass audience is excited about The Avengers. The strategy of releasing five solo films in four years was risky but it paid off handsomely.
Marvel Studios built its brand from the ground up in a very short time. That's an amazing achievement.

Too true. The entire project was a risk from the start but they certainly managed to pull it off extraordinarily well, and managed to beat DC to the punch.

And before anyone asks, the numbers do matter. They matter because they offer a good way to gauge audience awareness of the movie and enthusiasm for it. It isn't merely a matter of competition between franchises, but one of measuring how effective Marvel's promotion of The Avengers has been. Looking at those numbers, it's clear that the campaign for the movie has been very effective, indeed.

The Hobbit is going to be huge. I don't know what it is about The Lord of the Rings franchise, but it draws in pretty much everyone, no matter what. I never read the books, and was never much into fantasy or things like it, but every time a Lord of the Rings movie came out, I was there, first day. The scale and scope of the movie just turned every installment into an experience. I expect the same with The Hobbit. It's something you just have to see.

The "x factor" in The Hobbit, though, is that, like Tolkien's books, it's designed for a much younger audience than LOTR. LOTR was a spectacular epic fantasy, full of very grownup themes and characters. The Hobbit was intended to be a children's story, and as such, is full of "Little People." Dwarves and hobbits take center stage; unlike LOTR, which was largely dominated by the human and elven characters.
This works both for and against The Hobbit's box office. On the one hand, kids and parents who might not have got involved with LOTR might be more inclined to enjoy this one, while LOTR fans expecting to see the more mature approach to high fantasy in the Trilogy might be disappointed at this one as too "kiddie."
Could work either way. I'm still inclined to believe it'll easily dominate the top of the box office charts for 2012, but I think it'll be because it will be perceived as a "kid's movie" instead of a grownup affair.

I think The Hobbit will draw in all segments of the public. Most Tolkien fans read the book as kids and love it as their introduction to the world of Middle Earth. In my family, the older kids sat the younger ones down with The Hobbit at 10 years old and had them read it to prepare for LOTR when they were slightly older. My dad had first editions of all of the novels and started the tradition off. I'm sure that many look back fondly on that more-or-less gentle introduction to one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever created.
Even though the hobbits and dwarves seem kid-friendly, the saga ends with a brutal battle in which many of those involved died. If it is rendered faithfully, as undoubtedly it will be, the battle could be terrifying to young children. Like the Harry Potter series, however, it will still be accessible to kids even though it is far more mature material than that in most movies aimed at children. The Hobbit is not all bumbling dwarves singing jolly songs, but it has a lot to offer to viewers of all ages.

A lot of the words regarding this issue, which still may be found here are being seriously twisted. I explained the reason behind these conclusions, i happen to be well qualified in video equipment calibration, and have access to some of the best home equipment on the planet! Sorry, don't mean to brag, seriously.I see my movies in my showroom on a Vidikron Vision70 Projector with an anamorphic lens attached to achieve a constant image height of 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The Dalite HD progressive surface, 115" 2.35:1 screen is the target. Projector is ISF calibrated for the correct color space and grey scale temperature! It is beuty to behold! It's just the main reason behind my conclusions of the initial trailer. The second one is in fact much better, but unfortunately for me, it does look a little too "cartoonish",(anybody have a better word?), in some scenes. The CGI scenes of Iron Man are pretty much the best looking. But the Shield scenes in what i suppose to be the Hellicarrier look like tv, (won't ever use tvish again!), pretty awful on a big screen. This is also not a judgement o Whedon's directing prowess, but a critical view of the cinematography chosen. It may in the end serve the movie well, and i will be there the very first time they roll it even if i have to become a murderer! Well, not really, but you get it.

I'll be there opening night.
Ditto! When I saw the first teaser trailer, I watched that so many times, and would go to work humming the song. The movie looks the be a wonderful mix of fun, adventure, mysteriousness, and a bit of nostalgia! I have no doubt that it will be the masterpiece of the year.

How can anyone hate that suit. It looks great and authentic. They took the real authentic CAPTAIN AMERICA costume and modified it just enough to non-corny and maintain it's authenticity.

Whil it's true that the helmet draws the most criticism, I have heard may criticising the suit on the whole; the lack of anything on the back, the material quality, the white on the arms not going fully around, the zipper/s, etc.
To me, in the trailers/tv spots, it looks awesome!
I like the suit but I don't get why theres nothing on the back either. It doesn't make sense. Why omit something that didn't need to be. All he needs is a star on his back and the red and white stripes going all the way around and the suit would be perfect.

Even having multiple issues with the way it looks doesn't mean someone detests the thing. I think it looks good but with maybe a half dozen simple changes could be greatly improved.

Rather than just putting what he has in front on the back, I think they should have just come up with something completely different. Like maybe a white eagle where the star would be.

Well, he looks great in that gif because he isn't wearing the dumb helmet. If he'd just pull on the cowl that's sitting on his neck like a hood it would be much cooler than the big-domed, plastic helmet thing.

The idea of making a literal translation of a superhero from a comic book to the big screen has never been realized as good as whar we are getting in the avengers. Every character looks fantastic and genuinely portrays their respective comic book versions to the letter. I hope marvel can continue nailing it with each new character introduced.

Oh, wait...
Thor was not portrayed as having massive strength in his own movie. Thor's strength level is on par with the Hulk and Superman and yet I never got the sense watching Thor that he had all this massive strength. I think of all the heroes Thor will be underpowered. Mjolnir was pretty much spot on though no mention that it can open portals through space/time.
The Morningstar
03-09-2012, 02:56 AM
Hulk isn't the strongest hero in Marvel. No where near it it. Strongest on Marvel Earth? Yea. But there is plenty of other heavyweights out in space. Take Gladiator for example. He destroys planets... by punching them.
Anyway, for the movies I think we should let Hulk have the superior strength, as it's all he's got. Thor has a variety of different powers so there should be a compromise. Doesn't mean Thor won't be super strong, but making him the strongest physically, and he has all the other powers Mjolnir grants him is overkill.

Well he's a god, what do you expect?
Unless they grant Hulk god status in the Marvel Universe, Thor is more powerful by definition.
Shockingly, I can see how a Fraction/Bandis/Hack-writers ruled 616-verse might consider GIVING Hulk god status down the line.
It makes me cry.

Man, those boots look ridiculous. Here is hope that they redesign the suit from scratch for the Cap sequel, because this one has not a single redeeming quality.
I don't get how the designer for TA got almost everything right, but completely f*** up Caps suit. I guess we can be glad they put Hawkeye in his Ultimate outfit, because if they approached the 616 costume similar to this Cap outfit, no one could take Hawkeye serious.
And I say that as a huge Hawkeye fan.
