I figured I'd start a thread to discuss the IDW continuity of the Turtles.

so what's the deal with the Turtles comics? was their a reboot or something? i've been out of the loop with comics for past few years

No this is pretty much a reboot, and the only ongoing TMNT comics right now.
When Mirage was bought out by Nickelodeon, the main continuity is now dead. But the problem with the Mirage books was the delays and the crazy prices. I thought I saw an issue for like 10 dollars once.
Then there was the Dreamwave series that was defunct years ago; that was based on the 2003 cartoon.

I am in love with this series. I wish that Bay and Co. would look at this comic for reference material for the movie.
8 issues and 3 micro-series issues in and I think it's that good. It puts in elements from all previous TMNT incarnations in a more 'respectable' manner. You still have the awesome personalities from the 90s but the tone of the late 80s intact at the same time. Everything seems to be more intelligently planned and webbed together, too.

Just finished the 8 issues up to now, and man do I love this series! I agree with trustyside in that Liebesman should definitely take inspiration from this :)

I'm really liking this series. It's like " Ultimate Ninja Turtles ". I just don't like the art work. I would love to see Kevin Eastman,Lesean Thomas, Micheal Dooney, or A.C. Farley take over the artwork. I know Kevin is just doing the layouts, and a few covers, but I think its time he got back on the saddle.

I think you mean Laird? Eastman is the writer. And I LOVE the art.

Nope, I meant Kevin. Laird wrote the last volume of the Mirage series, and I really didn't care too much for because of all of the sci/fi super hero elements he added. Kevin contributes on the story for IDW along with Tom Waltz, but Waltz mainly writes the script. Kevin mainly does the plots and lay outs. I want to see him dothe actual pencils .

OK, finally caught up on the new IDW run. I have to say it's a pretty good read. I don't even mind the reincarnation cycle. The only nitpick I have, is that their Transformation happened only 15 months ago, instead of 15 years.

This series is pretty cool. I love how they take bits from every incarnation of the Turtles and updates it. Love seeing the Turtles in our time. Also dig how the story unravels, in a slow way and always making sure to keep the characters developing.
The way they segued into colored head-bands was cool too as is the updated more serious versions of Bebop and Rocksteady. Tone of the original comics with a touch of Fred Wolf ideas and designs.
What I don't like that much is the look of Splinter and the rushed 15 months origin.
Both the art and writing is solid while nothing amazing or anything. As a fan of the first live-action TMNT movie I also think this series could use a little more goofy fun, if just a little.

Though I gotta say I dig the origin idea in itself. The mix of reincarnation and science.

Can't wait for the Leo one-shot, should be very badass and dramatic.
Also this version of the cover is fantastic:

YES !!!! PLEASE DO!!! Thats was when the turtles were grim and gritty bad asses. Also pick up copies of Archie's " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures ". That was also a pretty good series. It combined the humour of the 87 toon with the tone of Mirage.

Eastman's covers have been a highlight of this series for me.
I wish he was doing the art too. All those issues of Mirage that Jim Lawson was credited for back in Volume 1... Eastmen inked them and he pretty much re-drew them to match his style. I used to think of Lawson as the ultimate TMNT artist until I found out all his work that I ended up hating and wondering what the hell went wrong was because Eastman wasn't inking.

I loved the moment with the memory of his mother and the woman in the building...but overall this Leonardo Spotlight issue in the Micro Series was the weakest. Too fast paced so felt so short. Barely any dialogue or internal dialogue. And his "banter" against the Foot was rather...stupid with the things he was saying feeling so random.

4 Issues in and loving it so far and I always go for the Eastman covers!
The Donatello mini series issue was really good aswell, kinda made me make him my favourite one now. "To me my bo staff."
Just gotta wait till they 'eat a slice' and then my nostalgia will go into overload! :P

Im really loving this series so far, it does have it stinker moments such as there explanation as to why Casey just accepts who Raph is. But overall its been very intriguing and has kept me interested to see what happens next at the end of each issue.

I keep telling people this is the best comic book right now. I mean it's freakin Ninja Turtles! Eatman and Laird are the guys that lived the dream. I know that Eastman was always more open to some of the goofier stuff from the cartoon and Venus from Next Mutation. I think We're in completely the best hands we could ever be in. He's he only guy that could mix everything together in a big pot and come out with so many awesome things.
I remember IDW teaseing a while ago about an Eastman solo Annual and I really hope it happens. That would be epic as hell!
The Shredder looks kick ass. Can't wait till the next issue.

This is by far one of the best comics out there right now. It is hands down one of the best versions of the TMNT to date. If you haven't read them yet you need to find the trades and pic them up.

I have to say, we've gotten like what? 18 issues total? And so far the only complait I have is that the Splinter Mirco is supposed to take place during issue 11. I just hate when they do things like that, but thats just personal taste.
Everything else hase been bloody fantastic!

The IDW TMNT comic to me is the best thing which has come from the franchise since the sale of it to Viacom in 2010. It's one of my favorite comics and is always an awesome read.

I've been reading the new series and it's very good. It's an amalgam of the original toon, the new toon, the original comics, and the films. It's very much an "Ultimate" style reboot (without all the cannibalism, lol). So far they've handled the characters well but I do miss the original artistic Mirage comics.
Here's the continuity order for those of you interested (this includes the released and announced issues):
TMNT# 1-5
Raphael Micro
Michelangelo Micro
TMNT# 6
Donatello Micro
Infestation 2 TMNT # 1-2
TMNT #7-8
Leonardo Micro
TMNT # 9-10
Splinter Micro
TMNT #11-12
Casey Jones Micro
April O'Neil Micro
TMNT # 13-14
Fugitoid Micro
They are all available on the IDW comic app.
Also Holiday the trade includes TMNT # 1-4 and the Micro Series trade includes the 4 Turtle Micros.
So now that the first arc has wrapped up I have to say it was even better than I expected. It made me a fan of the reincarnation angle a lot more than the '03 series managed to do which is interesting cause I had mixed feelings about that at first. Now I can't think of a better way to make Yoshi Vs. Saki make sense.
trustyside-kick
08-01-2012, 01:36 PM
Oh the reincarnation angle was first introduced in the 2003 cartoon?
I mean as far as The Shredder goes anyway even though it was cause he was an alien in the series logically more an illusion of reincarnation and not actual. I like what they did for the turtles and splinter though cause it makes Saki Vs. Yoshi more personal and also it's more in tune with beliefs in Eastern culture like reincarnation.

I wouldn't say it's the BEST. It's good. To me, Archie's TMNT Adventures were the best. A perfect blend of the Fred Wolf toon turtles whith just a teaspoon of Mirage thrown in.

So I just read April and #13. Man I love this comic series. I love how Slash is in it now, just free to roam around for a bit before getting picked up again. I really hope the Rocksteady and Beebop thing is picked up on soon, I wanna see those guys in action!
One thing is I don't really like the new artist. I wasn't a fan in the Mikey one shot and I'm still not a fan here. The artist on the Donnie one shot would have been my prefered artist to take over. Oh, or Blair Shedd, he needs more work in the comic industry!!

The Archie's TMNT Adventures to me were a little bit too juvenile in the vain of the 1987 cartoon. What do you think?

Starting out, yeah because it basically adapted the early episodes of the cartoon, but I'd say from Iss. 5 - on, the stories became more original and the writing became much better. dealing with every thing from environmental issues to the 4 Horse men of the Apacalyspe. Don't get me wrong, I like IDW's TMNT. My only issue is I'm not to crazy about the artwork.
Yeah the Archie book was really good. It was a much better interpretation than the actual show because it had a lot more freedom. Similar to Superman Adventures being better than STAS in that regard. It was a cool middle ground between the cartoon and the mirage books.
Issue 14 came out last wed and it was pretty rad. Best part was
Neutrinos showing up and then shortly after that we see the Technodrome being built :woot:

Don't ask questions which are easily explained by just going to Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_7?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=teenage+mutant+ninja+turtles&sprefix=Teenage%2Caps%2C200).

Issue 14 was indeed awesome!! Now that we are fully up to date on the "reincarnation" explanation angle it feels like we are going to be telling TMNT stories. Kang and the Technodrome---awesome!!

I've been avoiding the micros cause I only have so much money to spend on monthlies. Early in the main series though they did show Krang with rock soldiers in Dimension X and all. It's been so long since then though and the series kept developing away from that so it was nice to see them go "don't worry guys we didn't forget about that" so explicitily this last issue and pick that plot thread right back up.

I'm really missing Duncan on art though. The new artist is ok, but I never really get the feeling of any motion going on. Or emotion for that matter. I liked how Duncan would show the Turtles during arguments, or relaxed periods. He drew them well. He was also really good at the action stuff. It was always going to be a hard act to follow.
Anyhow, I did read issue 14 and I loved Krang taking Stockman through on a tour. And oh man, the reveal of the Technodrome! Almost as awesome as the reveal of Shredder.

Not me. Duncan 's turtles looked like potato-headed frogs, plus there arms and legs were too skinny. I think Kuhn is better, but not by much. Really wish that Eastman, Dooney, Farley, Talbot, or Lesean would take over art chores.
I just picked up the Splinter and Michelangelo micro series, and issues 11-14. I am very impressed with this comic. IDW is doing a helluva good job on TMNT, as well as Ghostbusters, Transformers, and BattleBeasts.

I just got around to reading the 2012 Annual that came out last week done almost entirely by Eastman. What a great read! I know at $9 it's pricey but it's got pages to it and it's broken down into segments that showcase many of the main players introduced in the relaunch thus far and tossing in a few new characters. It feels a bit like Pulp Fiction in the way the story backs up and starts again from each characters perspective(I'm sure there's a proper storytelling term here I don't know). I really liked it and even bought an extra for a friend who no longer as an LCS within a 45min drive of his house. He mostly TPB waits now and I doubt these ends up collected anytime soon.
At $9 I got more out of it than I have 3 issues of a Marvel of DC book over the past year.

with volume 4 now being released i can kinda keep up with the story
i one gripe is they really need to get a constant art style or even a bloody model sheet. volume 4 ends with the turtles facing slash but until he got his own mask the way he was drawn you would have said it was tokka instead.
