View Full Version : Worst Moments as a Sports Fan?

Kicker shanks an easy FG. Your QB throws a pick to end the game. A SG drops a 3 PT dagger in the closing seconds. Your goalie gives up the last point at the end of overtime. The Yankees win another World Series.:yay:
As a sports fan, there are moments that you will remember forever. Moments that leave you feeling hollow or enraged, or an unhealthy mix of both.
The 1st Step toward recovery isn't admitting the problem, it's sharing your festering wound with the rest of the world. Time to open up.
Personally:
-Cundiff ****s up a .00000001 yard FG against the Patriots
-Ravens ousted by the Steelers 31 - 24 2010 Season
-Connecticut 79, Duke 78 2003 - 2004 Final Four. Losing by a f'n POINT
-Duke loses 93 - 77 to ARIZONA as a #1 Seed
-Lakers swept by the Jazz in the Conference Finals 97 - 98 season
-Lakers molested by the Pistons 4 - 1 in the Finals 03 - 04 season
-Losing in the Finals to the punk ass Celtics 07 -08 Season
Other losses piss me off but these? These set my ****ing teeth on edge.

The Yankees blowing the 2004 ALCS. The A-Rod slap play especially drove me out of my mind. It was so unsportsmanlike and I really didn't like him after that. Add on the opt out stunt he pulled during the 07 WS and his steroid admission, I can't wait until his contract is up.
The Knicks losing to the Pacers in game 7 of the 95 playoffs hurt. So did the brawl with Miami in 97 that cost them the series. They had a serious squad that year and could have beat the Bulls IMO.
The Knicks trading Ewing is a very bad memory. I remember listening to the press conference on the radio at work. It kicked off a chain of events that led to a decade of nightmarish basketball.
There were a ton of bad moments as a Giants fan ( especially DeSean Jackson's punt return in 2010) but 2 Super Bowls have wiped a lot of those out of my brain.

Having the witness the Packers murder my Falcons dead on the field in the playoffs.
The Braves choke outs in the 90s. Can't name a single one as they've all kind of blended together.
When I first heard about Vick getting indicted...that was rough.

Yes, Yes, Yes. That drove me f'n nuts, it was just so damn stupid & we would have won it all. Just thinking about it is pissing me off all over again.:o
As to the Vick process, from start to finish (prison) was a low for alot of sports fans in general, glad you mentioned that. I know it had to be 10x worse for a Falcons fan.

As a Yankees, Giants, Knicks, Rangers fan, I could say 2004 but it's kinda blown over for me, I think right now it's the almost 40 year drought since the Knicks won a championship. And 93-94 and 99-00 didn't help.

Yea, the whole year after I heard the indictment news was so bleak. It was the only time as a football fan that I honestly believed my team was never going to rebound. Its bad when your former favorite player is in prison, it's worse when you team goes 3-13 along side that.

1994 when michael schumacher deliberately hit damon hill and denied him the title.
juventus losing champions league final against dortmund in 1997, real madrid in 1998 and ac milan in 2003. should have won all 3 of them.
novak djokovic losing to federer in roland garros semi final 2011. he could have and should have won all 4 slams that season.
most tragic moment was when monika seles was stabbed by that guy during a tennis match. she could have won so much.

They had the Finals nearly won in 93-94, that one hurt. I had low expectations going into the 99 Finals. They were so banged up, I knew in my mind there was no way they were going to beat Robinson and Duncan.
I've got a ton of great memories from that decade. Even if STAT and Melo happen to win a championship one day, I'll still love those 90's teams.

I was a Phillies fan from 1993 - 2004ish. That first season was so cool, they made it to the series, but then disappointing for nearly a decade.
But, in 2007, I got back into the Phillies, just in time for them to be good, and they won the series the next year. That was pretty cool.
The absolute worst moment, was when the Flyers got killed by the Redwings.
That was rock bottom. I'm still not able to really get through an entire Flyers game. It's too emotionally damaging.
BUT - If they do win the series this year, I'll be the first person at the Parade, because they owe me for my decade of dedication.

* The entirety of Super Bowl XXXV (2000)
* Jan 5th, 2003 The 49ers make the second largest comeback in NFL playoff history against the Giants. Kerry Collins actually drives our offense all the way down to the San Fran 23 with 6 seconds left. Botched snap on th FG attempt and the game is over. There were actually offsetting penalties which should have prolonged the game by one play, but the refs announced the game was over. The NFL sent the Giants a letter of apology the next week.

As a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, I can't believe I forgot about this one.
Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series. Nothing like watching your beloved team lose a game in the last inning with a former star player of yours scoring the winning run. That was the most soul-crushing game I can remember and the day I stopped watching baseball. I'm not kidding.
Of course, it's not like it mattered, because the Pirates have followed that game up with 19 (and soon to be 20) losing seasons.

Not my team, but just as a basketball fan in general. The most disgusting thing I've ever seen in any team sport was watching Kobe Bryant f*** his team in the 2003-2004 NBA Finals.
After that I'd probably rank watching kris Draper get laid the f*** out by that right c**t Claude Lemieux...
And a more personal one, which was more disappointment from losing than anything else... Paxson in the 92-93 Finals.

2011 Arsenal playing against Birmingham in the FA Cup Finals. Losing that game......it's like you just knew the season was going down the drains, it was tangible.
2003 Lakers, I think it was Game 5 against the Spurs in the Western Conference semis. Coming off 3 titles, they had that aura of invincibility still, series was tied 2-2 and it was coming down the wire. I think we were down by 2, last second shot comes to Horry, he's wide open, seen him hit that shot a million times to win us games and it rims out. One of those weird moments where they didn't get beat till the next game but when Horry missed that shot everybody knew the dynasty was over.
Minnesota Viking's 2011.
2012 Wolves getting relegated to the Championship.. on a brighter note I'm happy we'll have a better chance of winning more than 6 games a season.

I'm a 49ers fan, and I was at that game. One of the greatest moments of my life as a sports fan. It may have been off-setting penalties, but I'd have hated to see the Giants get bailed out of a broken play by a penalty that had no impact on the outcome. It was a missed call for sure, but that was a broken play that wasn't going to work out, and a penalty would have bailed them out.
Anyways, the Giants got it back this past year when Ahmad Bradshaw was ruled "forward progress stopped" and bailed out of his obvious fumble that likely would have won the game for San Francisco.
As far as my worst moments:
-Tonight, realizing that LeBron James is gonna get his ring. :(
-Kyle Williams overtime fumble in the 2012 NFC Championship Game.
-As an Orlando Magic fan, Nick Anderson's missed free throws in the '95 NBA Finals.
-Brett Favre's "miracle" final second throw as a Viking against the 49ers in week 3 of the 2009 season.
-Garrison Hearst's injury in the 1999 Division Playoffs that pretty much lost us the game against Atlanta.
-San Francisco Giants losing to the Atlanta Braves I believe in the 1993 single game playoff, before the Wild Card was implemented.

as a Steelers fan...
- losing 4 AFC Championship games in the 1990's / early 2000's ( lost to San Diego, Denver, and New England twice)

I agree with Van Nistelrooy too, but it's not as painful as the other 2.
I think what hurt even more (in hindsight though) is that if RVN had scored that pen', Arsenal wouldn't have finished the season unbeaten.
But the league though. 8 points squandered. The 4-4 draw with Everton was the killer. QPR couldn't hold on for a couple of minutes, couldn't kick the ball out or down the field. Jammy gits lol, Aguero is class though.

Another sad one was Hank Gathers dying on the court. Oddly enough, right in front of Erik Spoelstra.
As far as a disappointment goes, I'd have to say Rick Ankiel's collapse is up there. He was on his way to being the next dominant pitcher and then he suddenly can't throw a strike against the Mets in 2000 NLCS. I freaking hated the Mets too. Especially Mike Hampton. He just destroyed the Cards, like most left handers back in the day when we had JD Drew, Vina, and Jim Edmonds in the lineup.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy missing a last minute penalty against Arsenal.
I would agree with all of these.
Painful.
Although I do believe Wayne Rooney and Alan Smith helped us end Arsenals unbeaten run the following season.
I think so anyway. I could be wrong it was such a long time ago. lol

For me as a Bengals fan, both 1981 and 1988 were the worst as a sports fan, losing 2 super bowls to the 49ers.
Pete Johnson stopped 4 times at the 1 yard line after we made a come back and Montana's last minute drive to score in the final minute to win, as Anthony Munoz says, he was 1 yard and 1 minute from being a 2 time super bowl champion.
And recently my Bluejackets traded away the only star we had to the Rangers for no bodies, 11 yrs of bad hockey, well we had one year we made the playoffs, but its going to be a long time before we are even in the conversation for playoffs.

This seems easy enough to rectify...obviously time ran out had the clock been working...
