She's not mentioned on any of the returning cast lists and like Josh Dallas she's a lead character on a TV show, so maybe not. In terms of storyline she'd be easy to write out, especially if Jane spends time away from Earth, but I did like the character so I hope she's in it.

The 'Facebook' line from the first movie still doesn't sit well with me. I hate how they put pop references in like that, it dates the movie too much.
But Kat is super hot and I would welcome her return, as long as its short and sweet in the Earth scenes. I wouldn't be too keen on her tagging along to Asgard and making stupid quips at everything she sees.... "This is going on facebook! Oh noes I can't connect from Asgard! (insert random phone company joke here)"

It's not that big of a deal really I don't see why people get worked up over it.

I'm far from worked up, but I would rather it was a timeless movie, not circa 2010+...
Certainly not a deal breaker, it just sounded forced.

It was a pretty dodgy line. Very 'wow, we're so young'.
That's not Kat's fault though. I really liked her in the last film. Has she turned up in the comics yet? I'ld love to see more of Kat Dennings.

Just have Jane sitting there at the observatory in Norway, looking sad and bored, and then Thor crashes through the ceiling, scoops her up, and whisks her away to Asgard without even bothering to say "Hi Jane." ;)

Feels like Thor 2 could easily run the risk of having too many characters. Thor 1 already did a bit, I think. A lot of the time, you had these little packs of characters running around, especially Sif + the Warriors Three and Darcy, Jane + Selvig.
I like Kat Dennings a lot, but I could see her only appearing at the beginning, as a sort of cameo before Jane goes to Asgard (if that's what happens).
It could be funny to see her interact with Asgardians, provide wry commentary on the wierd things she sees there... So maybe she goes with Jane, I guess. Not sure how much time I really want to see spent on that, though.

I can see Darcy getting pulled along with Jane into an Asgardian realm. Either by Thor or Thor's enemies. If these earth ladies are hanging out with Asgardian's, I wonder if Darcy will attract the affection of any Asgardians. Perhaps one of the Warrior Three?

Well, there's a Thor 1 script on line with this exchange:
Fandral: Are all earth maidens as fair as you?
(Darcy enjoys the attention)
Darcy: No.
(Maybe someone can say if it's in one of the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray.)
So yeah, that sounds plausible.

Here's a thought: maybe the climax of the movie will involve the Warriors Three ( and Sif! ) holding the line against the Dark Elves on the Earth-side of the faerie portal, while Thor dukes it out with Malekith and Kurse on the other side? If something vaguely like that happens, it might lead to Thor taking Jane on a tour of cosmos, while the Warriors Three hang out on Earth with Darcy and Selvig. ;)
American Maid
08-28-2012, 06:51 PM
FWIW, I don't think Jane's going to go on the tour of the cosmos. (though I could see Jane and Thor having an argument about that).
A while back, someone, maybe on this particular thread, speculated about Darcy and Erik acting as "dispatchers", perhaps on Earth. Actually, I think that's what Jane and Erik will do from Asgard. Darcy would be there too because she's part of the team working on these Einstein-Rosen bridges.

I love Kat Dennings, I liked Darcy Lewis, and I'm super excited that she's returning, if only because she's pretty much the sole female character in the MCU who shares her scenes with another female. Bechdel Test, yo! Thor, for whatever faults it has, is probably the most fem-friendly Marvel movie yet.
Also, she actually has a not-insignificant online fanbase, if looking at Tumblr and fic sites can be a measure of these things.

Yeah, it does fail unfortunately. Just a small, tiny misstep from Joss. Although he gets major bonus points from me for not rendering the major female character a love interest alone... of course, this is one of the reasons why I love the Marvel Studio movies. The female characters are far greater than simply being the girlfriend of the hero.
I have a feeling he'll fix this issue in TA2. Also I'm hoping for more female characters, obviously.

Man, some people have a death wish for Kat Dennings' Darcy. I mean, really? She may have been annoying in a few scenes in Thor, but she had a wonderful rapport with Natalie Portman. And her taser scenes were funny.
I don't see what the problem is with expanding her role in Thor 2 if it's integral to the story and not just because of Dennings' leading role in 2 Broke Girls.
Although after seeing the sitcom, they need to de-geek Darcy down and emphasize her sexier side. Anyone who's seen candid (i.e. leaked blog photos) or red carpet photos of Ms. Dennings know she's a helluva lot more stacked than Natalie and apparently nicer in person too.

Too bad her character is fairly useless to the story.
The purpose of Darcy's character is to help members of the general audience, who are not well versed in the entire history of the Nine Realms, to relate to the material. She may be useless to many posters here, because they are quite familiar with everything related to Thor and are already into it. But that doesn't mean she has no purpose at all. She helps expand the audience beyond that which reads the book, and therefore helps the movie to be more successful.
And who could fault Marvel for wanting more people to enjoy the MCU?

I'd wager (not really) that Darcy's role will be woven further into the Thorverse. We'll have to wait and see obviously, but her having an "expanded" role in T:TDW points that.
Also, I'm absolutely not ready to give up the sole female character who has a relationship with another female character in the MCU. I'm sure the studio's finding ways to integrate Darcy even further in the MCU, as they did with Selvig and Coulson.

That would be *very* interesting! What ideas do you have for how Darcy's role could be further woven into the Thor-verse?
Here's one: she is a political science major. So maybe if there are a lot of diplomacy issues or palace intrigue, she could have something to contribute drawing on her education.

(Just to be pedantic, if a female character has a relationship with another female character, then neither of them could be the *sole* female character with such a relationship :yay:)
To hang in there with one would mean to hang in there with the other one. It would be very cool for both of them to have ongoing ways to contribute to the (MCU) story (and not necessarily as love interest(s)).
I've read bits and pieces that suggest Marvel has some interest in addressing this issue. Here's hoping they stay the course!

That would be very interesting, and also potentially hilarious. If it's something like this, I'd love it if Darcy will show some skills, as well as humor, in her field, as both Jane and Sif have been shown to be talented in their fields.
Actually, perusing pics of Hela in the comics, I've noticed that Ultimate Hela looks a hell of a lot like Dennings, a fact which a few posters here have jumped on (in other threads). I think it'd be golden if it turns out she was Hela.

Ha! I stand corrected!
That's basically what I meant, where they both are integral to the story of T:TDW and not simply "Jane = Thor's love interest" and "Darcy = friend of Jane's".

Oh yeah, doing an image search, I see what you mean. It's a little creepy. . .
Having her turn out to be Hela would be a bit of a strain on continuity, though. For example, there's the story where Sif is in Hel (because some giant made a deal for immortality) and Thor offers his life in exchange for hers. Hela is so impressed by the nobility of the proposed sacrifice that she lets them both go. This was before Sif trained to be a warrior, so it would have taken place at least 900 years before Darcy was born.
That's basically what I meant, where they both are integral to the story of T:TDW and not simply "Jane = Thor's love interest" and "Darcy = friend of Jane's".
And if it's not to be for Jane to be Thor's love interest, then I hope at least she can contribute to the overall storyline in the MCU. (I think there will be a lot of portals in future movies.) But of course I would prefer for both elements to work out.
And similarly for Darcy.
<I said: I've read bits and pieces that suggest Marvel has some interest in addressing this issue [of female characters having more substantive roles]. Here's hoping they stay the course! >

Yeah, but we don't know which stories are movie canon or not. So far Hela hasn't even been mentioned in the films. Loki's only children to be shown have been Sleipnir which Odin rode but was not mentioned and Jörmungandr who was on Loki's armor in The Avengers.
It would be a really cool twist though...no wonder Darcy had the urge to taze Thor...

I really do not think that in MCU Loki have ANY children.
Sleipnir is just a strange other dimensional animal and snake (its nothing more its just a snake Jörmungandr), on the armor element is just a symbolic depiction of Loki`s sinful and treacherous nature.
Even in comic (MT 7) Sleipnir is not his son as he was tamed by Odin while he himself was just a boy.
In some resent JIM there is a scene where Loki speak about how Hela can`t be his daughter as she already existed when he was a child but how all believe that she is. In comic it`s probably leftover from the past cycles but MCU is too grounded to allow such a thing in my option.

Yeah, you're right. How can Thor be part of the Norse pantheon (and in the book that Jane and Co. look through) if he isn't born until almost the end of the Viking Age? Same for Loki.
While that oversight might give them liberty to do so, I still don't think they should compound their error by straining continuity vis-a-vis Darcy/Hela, though.

Maybe Thor 2 will have a Thor/Darcy/Jane love triangle? A love triangle between Thor, Jane and Darcy..... Dear lord what a terrible suggestion... Both in terms of pure taste, as well as reasons for suggesting it.
Of course I'm biased because I'm hoping 'extended role' amounts to nothing more than seeing/hearing of her very early, quick demise...

Well, Dennings is getting a bigger role in the movie because her sitcom being so popular now. I assume she'll be one of the following: 1) potential love interest (not ruled out), 2) more comic relief with her trigger-happy taser, 3) she and Stellan Skarsgaard have bigger roles in the story or 4) Darcy hooks up with someone else.

Option #2 almost goes without saying. Darcy's role in the first film was to help people who normally do not enjoy fiction involving science fiction/fantasy/supernatural elements in it to be more comfortable with this material. By all accounts, there will be more supernatural material in this film, so that segment of the audience may need more Darcy.
Option #4 is also possible, especially if it is written in support of Option #2 (ie, the couple has a lot of funny banter). I can see Option #3 happening, too. I tend to think that portals will continue to be important in the MCU.
Option #1 I see as a long shot. In addition to it being unclear that there's anything to build a relationship on, there are too many other potential love interests already in the story. It gets too complicated. Movies have to be a lot simpler with story lines and be a lot more parsimonious with characters than books or comic books.
But I can see a combination of Options 2-4.

How sad is it that "expanded role" for a female character automatically translates to "love interest"?
And that's not a knock on you mclay, you're right that it's how Hollywood typically thinks

lol thinking about it Thor might be the only Marvel movie that passes Bechdel, haha. Did Pepper/Widow talk business at all in IM2, or was it all (and by "all" I mean "both scenes" :oldrazz:) Tony?
I think they may have had some brief dialogue about business.

Or she is Hela. I wouldn't be surprised. Given that on IMBD it originally said that, coulda been a mistake, but, I wouldn't doubt it. There is NO point in having her as a friggin love interest. By expanded, I don't think they mean love interest, she doesn't give off that vibe

Do you consider this a good or a bad thing?
I like to think I'm as normally heterosexual as the next heterosexual guy... But I just don't find her that attractive. Not ugly by any means, but certainly not beautiful. And imo if she ain't beautiful, she ain't sexy.
And then you add her voice.
Don't get me wrong; back when I was younger and single I doubt I'd have said not if she asked why not... At least, not because of looks (I like to think I'm a decent lad)...

It depends. In some scenes, the look actually works for her -- hotness wise. But in that outfit with the dark lipstick and eyeshadow... yuck.

She's Jewish, so I doubt you'll see her eating anything with sausage or bacon on it. Or she grew up Jewish, some Jews I know do eat bacon and other un-kosher food.

OMG! that's right! That happened! All right, Darcy/Fandral needs to happen in Thor 2. LOL
And if they do do more with Darcy and Fandral, I'd like to see exchanges like this:
FANDRAL Are all earth maidens as fair as you? (Darcy enjoys the attention.)
DARCY No.
elizah72
11-13-2012, 01:10 PM
oh, I'm sure Fandral is fully aware of how "fair" the maidens of Earth are. LOL
more like...
Fandral, Thor and company are getting ready to return to Asgard, with Jane and Darcy staying behind....
Darcy: (to Fandral) Call me.
Fandral: I dont actually have a telephone.
Darcy: Seriously? That is the lamest excuse I have ever heard! What you're going to hook up with me and be all romantic and all chivalrous and stuff and then not call me ?!
Jane *mutters to herself* : That's what Thor did...
Fandral: But I really dont-
Darcy: No, I rocked your godly world and you know it! If I don't hear back from you in a timely manner mister we are done. Do you hear me?! And then I'm going to tell all your friends about that kinky stuff you're into. *turns to Thor and the other Asgardians* You know, he's into some pretty twisted stuff in the sack, don't you?
Fandral: What?! No. No. No. No. No. No. No. Uh.... I'll do it! I will!
Darcy: You will what?
Fandral: I will call you.
Darcy: When?
Fandral: Tomorrow, right away...
Darcy smiles sweetly: Tomorrow right away, what?
Fandral, hesitantly embarrassed: I will call you tomorrow, right away...P... Pussycat.
Darcy: Awww.... that's so sweet of you, Pookie! See you soon! *kisses Fandral passionately*
Fandral, Thor and the other Asgardians exchange some awkward glances before disappearing in a ray of light back to Asgard.
Darcy turns to Jane.
Darcy: Now, that's what I'm talkin' about!
Jane nods, impressed. They high five each other.

I'm glad Dennings is in Thor 2. After watching a few episodes of the awful Two Broke Girls, I need to see her in something that reminds me she's actually a good actress. She totally phones it in on that show. It's almost like she KNOWS the material isn't funny and doesn't give a crap when she delivers her lines.
Why anyone watches that show (except to stare at Kat's cleavage) is beyond me. It's terrible.

Oh, I'm glad it's not just me then...I've liked her since 40 Year Old Virgin but I can't watch that show. I hope her role is truly expanded in a good way...and not code for being killed off or just referring to her character dealing with Jane's new stuff.

Kat interview with Metro newspaper
Your schedule has you jetting between London and LA – how are you coping?
Pretty badly. For example, in Thanksgiving Week we filmed the TV show on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning I flew to London and worked for two weeks, including weekends. I flew home on the Tuesday night and went back to work on Wednesday morning. That’s an extreme though. I will probably never ever do that again. It’svery hard to juggle two characters, two schedules and jetlag. The London-LA jetlag is really rough.
You look good on it.
That’s because I’m not eating and there’s stress involved. I’m telling you the truth. I eat but also get stressed. Then I get nauseous and stop eating. Now I know why people get so skinny. I used to be: ‘What are they on?’ But I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.
When will you be less stressed?
I’m sleeping for the first eight days of this year. Don’t call me, don’t write, don’t text me because I’m sleeping. Beep! Do not disturb
Is there anything you can tell us about Thor 2?
I can’t tell you a lot. I don’t know exactly what they’re releasing, so I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say. And if I say the wrong thing, I’m going to probably be assassinated. The experience has been fantastic. I think the atmosphere of this movie is going to feel a lot more authentic for fans. I think that will be really cool.
What do you watch on TV?
Downton Abbey. But I have to watch the whole thing on DVD. I can’t wait a week to watch the next one. I just got a TiVo for free because I was a presenter at the Emmys and they gave me one. Can you believe I didn’t even have one? I watch TV the old-fashioned way usually but now I don’t have any time at home to relax, I get the DVDs. And I watch shows on iTunes. I like Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch. I just like saying that name.

What do you think they might do to expand her role? She's a political science major, so maybe they could have her draw from that background somehow.
I suppose they could have her nearby and not working for Jane anymore, though that seems a bit improbable that they all wind up in London.
Maybe she'll have to accomplish a task in the story that Jane and Erik cannot if, for example, they are incapacitated in one way or another.

I read that on the train the other day. Kind of funny how she expects people to just know what Thanksgiving week is though, its a British paper most people have no clue when it is exactly.

I think they are going to expand the sisterly relationship between her and Jane. Jane's going to be dealing with pretty emotional stuff in this film, she needs a back up.

<Kat Dennings talking about filming over Thanksgiving.>
I read that on the train the other day. Kind of funny how she expects people to just know what Thanksgiving week is though, its a British paper most people have no clue when it is exactly.
I hadn't quite realized she had done that. Yeah, she should have referred to the dates, rather than the event.
As my little public service announcement for the day, in case anyone doesn't know (and wants to know), Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November in the U.S. (and the second Monday in October in Canada, I believe.)
<What do they mean when they say Darcy's role will be "expanded"?>
I think they are going to expand the sisterly relationship between her and Jane. Jane's going to be dealing with pretty emotional stuff in this film, she needs a back up.
I would *love* to see that! I hope they do that. (And I suspect Kat Dennings would enjoy that too, given that she has retweeted at least one of those "Jane and Darcy hanging out as friends" fan art pics) And you're right--Jane will need a friend! (And this film should pass the Bechdel test, too, since its predecessor did!)
I also would be glad if we see something of Darcy's character not directly related to her friendship with Jane. (for example, if she had to accomplish something in the story.)

You know...I was watching a video review for Beastmaster 2 and Darcy is not the first person to have knocked out a tall, musclebound blond guy with a taser. Maybe it's no shock that her name is Darcy.
A love triangle between Thor, Jane and Darcy..... Dear lord what a terrible suggestion... Both in terms of pure taste, as well as reasons for suggesting it.
 Agreed.
Expanding on a friendship between Jane and Darcy would be fine, but I'd like to see her stand on her own two legs, and not be so much a comic relief.

I still think it would be a cool idea if in the MCU, they made it so that Loki takes control of her and turns her into Lady Loki to use as bait for some reason or another. Maybe as some excuse to trick Jane into sacrificing herself or something. Just imagine Kat getting to play a serious mischievous role, that would be new for her.
