You could use Marvel.wikia.com and use their "Known appearances" sections and do a countdown that way...might get complicated though. :woot:

I think it's safe to say they're not going to have two alternate universe Thanos's. Why in the world would they confuse the audience like that? "Oh, the Guardians of the Galaxy Thanos? Yeah, he's a parallel universe version of the Avengers Thanos. They're not the same guy." The entire point of the MCU is for all their movies to coexist in the same universe. They're not about to create an Earth-1/Earth-2 situation like DC. As for the timeline, it'd happen after Avengers and before Avengers 2.

Just because certain characters have been confirmed doesn't automatically mean that all other characters won't be in it. There's a good chance we'll see 2 of those characters.

I theorized in another thread that they didn't put Warlock etc in because they didn't want to have 2-3 characters fighting for the role of main protagonist. It worked okay in Avengers since we'd already been introduced to all of those characters in solo films; we don't have that luxury this time.

As far as awareness, all of these characters are so obscure to the general audience, that I don't think it really makes a difference. Warlock and Nova are as much less famous than Iron Man as Iron Man was less famous than Spider-Man prior to his movie; at that point, what does it matter? Use the team you believe you can tell the best story with.

I don't know if you've read every Annihilation tie-in, but they could have part of the movie where the team is looking for the cosmic messiah (a'la when Phyla and Moondragon were in Annihilation Conquest), and find Warlock's cocoon.

Use the covers of the issues in which each character appeared. Here, let me get the ball rolling. As far as I can tell, Groot is surprisingly the oldest character of the bunch, first appearing in 1960 and created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Here it is, the beginning of what would become the modern era of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I like the idea from the Annihilation saga and Annihilation Conquest of a hero who was kind of GL-esque, who had a fall from grace, and this is his second chance.

Ok, according to the Marvel Database, each of the following characters has the following number of appearances.

230 Adam Warlock
208 Drax the Destroyer
167 Gamora
053 Groot
065 Rocket Raccoon

229 Thanos

So that's 1,021 appearances total. While a lot of those issues feature more than one character at once (Thanos and Drax the Destroyer first appeared together, after all), there's probably still plenty of separate covers left over to cover the next two years. So the only question is if they'll be done in order or at random. Personally I vote in order. :) At the very least their first appearances are so infrequent that we can go a couple days without a definite list compiled. After all, the next guy to appear on that list after Groot was Adam Warlock seven years later. Did Groot make any more appearances between 1960 and 1967? If not, then the cover for Monday should be Adam Warlock's first appearance. :)

I must admit that I have little to no interest in a Guardians movie. I only remember them from their first appearance in Marvel Super Heroes and know nothing of the new team. Groot, a Kirby monster, is the only thing that looks appealing to me from this newline up - well, maybe Rocket Raccoon, too.

However, I will see it BECAUSE it is a Marvel movie, and I DO hope that I like it.

I admit that I can not tell how much of my enjoyment of the other Marvel films is due to fact that these characters are finally being brought to the screen vs. how good the movie actually are. This is not to say I like all "Marvel" character movies, just because they are Marvel, did not like the Ang Lee Hulk, nor Ghost Rider, Spider-Man 3, X-Men Origins Wolverine, and disappointed by a few of the others.

This will be a good test case for me.

While I've never seen anything related to Guardians of The Galaxy, I think that the idea of a weird group of characters having adventures in space and going to different worlds is extremely interesting. Specially when we have a raccon carrying guns and a mutant tree.

Yknow the more I think about it, the more I kinda wish they had gone with Moondragon instead of Gamora. The already have a stone-cold killer in Drax. Moondragon is a great martial artist but she also has other unique abilities. Oh well.

The problem with Moondragon is that her backstory is super convoluted and involved, whereas the ones they chose, except maybe Star-Lord, are pretty straightforward. I'd guess all of them except for Star-Lord will be introduced rather matter-of-factly in this movie.

One panel appearances by both Adam Warlock and Thanos. I forget the specifics, but Dormammu's got some plot going where he's unleashing demons all over the universe, and so the issue has a page showing the reader how all these different parts of the world, and the universe, are being protected from those threats, and they're being fought off by the likes of the Inhumans (the Moon), Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and the Fantastic Four (New York), Man-Thing (some swamp somewhere), Dr. Doom (Latveria), Dracula (Transylvania), Adam Warlock (Counter-Earth), and Thanos (Titan).

Also, both Mantis and the Silver Surfer play bigger roles than that in the issue.

Hopefully I won't run out of photobucket space before I post up all the covers. :P The annoying thing, though, is coming up with the chronology once I got to the 90's and every character started making multiple appearances. That's a bear to hash through, and I'm dreading working my way through that only to get to the 2,000's. I've got time, though. I have a little over two months before I get to issues published in 1990 and afterwards. I just hope there're enough covers to go all the way to the premiere date. It LOOKS like a lot when you copy and paste the list of appearances for each character from the Marvel Database but, like I said, a lot of those appearances are shared by characters, which makes the actual list much smaller.

My guess is that Thanos will be the main villain in Avengers 3, but like I said, that's just my guess. I have a hard time seeing them do Thanos in Avenger 2, though. As a background villain, sure, but as the main bad guy? Nah. They need to build him up to be huge, and using him in Avengers 2 is way too soon. That and what could you possibly top him with in Avengers 3?
