Superman II wasn't an origin and that would've had Jor-El if they could've afforded Brando. He exists now as that interactive hologram thingy so i'm guessing he will be ever-present through the franchise in that form as a mentor.

Here's a manip I just finished up. I would have like to have had somebody looking out the window and pointing, but I couldn't find a pic like that. I even tried taking a picture of my girlfriend looking out the window while we were flying back to Vermont for the holidays, but I can't find the USB cable for her digital camera. I also, wanted to maybe add some type, but I wasn't sure what it would say, so if anybody would like to suggest something, I'll revise it. Hopefully you guys like it.

Here's another manip that I just finished up. In case anybody is wondering, that is a pic of Sydney that I used. I really don't like the name "Superman Returns" (reminds me too much of Batman Returns), so I came up with Superman: Homecoming. I know, it's kina corny, but it was either that or "Return of the Last Son" or "The Last Son Returns", but I really wanted to stay away from the word "Return", so I went with "Homecoming". I hope guys like it.

I posted this in a couple other places, figured I'd post it here too. Here's a full body shot of my ideal superman costume adorned by Brandon Routh. For reiteration: this type of suit would be entirely practical. A form- fitting muscle accentuation suit beneathe a layer of gently airbrushed lycra to better convey muscel definition and size, a voluminious cape that widens out as it falls (reminiscent of John Byrne's rendition,) somewhat smaller red trunks (vs. Reeve's granny-pants,) more sophisticated materials for the boots so that they don't rinkle as much and hold up better, and last but not least, a revamped \S/ shield. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, by all means share. In my mind, I think that if WB gave us a costume like this, then Superman fans, as well as any average moviegoer interested in seeing a comic book film, would have little to complain about.

I could have sworn they were grey...very cool pictures nonetheless. Did you do something with Routh's face, like I dont know, enlarge the jaw/chin or something? If you did, then I hope Routh can achieve the same effect after bulking up.

I don't think I changed his face at all, I think it was just his collar size that I increased, which of course will increase if you're bulking up.

I like the first and third ones. Add the curly cue back to the S on the left and I'd like it better. I don't like when it just ends in a straight line.
The S on the third one looks pretty spectacular, but maybe could use a bit less bloom behind it.
Part of me really likes the color of the first one, but it's either my monitor or the blue is just a bit too bright for my tastes.
At least on this screen, I'd prefer something in between that really bright blue and the darker blue presented. The bright red is nice though.
An alternative would be the more teal suit with maroon reminiscent of the "evil Superman" from Superman III. Cool as that might be, though Superman is a "true blue" hero. Which makes me think you should stick with true blue and bright red. We'll probably get an "edgier" darker red and blue for the film.
Nice work, though.
I really like the way you shaped Routh's eyebrows. Makes him look a LOT more like Superman.
With the enhancements that will be built into the suit, that's probably close to how he'll look, muscle-wise. Funny, i was thinking maybe they should build veins into it instead of that diamond pattern a la Spider-Man.

Well try describing what you would like and I'm fairly certain I could deliver.I see it with no shadow between the two, It should be a smooth transition from red to blue. You pretty much got it right the first time, It's just not how I see it in my head. Then again my head is pretty much screwed up anyway so I might be seeing things. ;) :D

Funny, i was thinking maybe they should build veins into it instead of that diamond pattern a la Spider-Man.
okay how about this...throwing in the middle and rights S symbol onto the color of the light blue to the left??

it was originally intended as a Routh's Superman artwork, but maaaan, we're running out of fresh and decent headshot of him.
I could go the easy route by sticking one of those headshots (that has been done to death on every manip) and be done with it, but then again people will see it as another manip using that similar headshot over and over again
Guess, we'll just stick to this version... but of course you're welcome to try your version of Routh if you want to

LEFT ONE, LEFT ONE, OH! and the LEFT ONE! The other \S/'s are nice but they are not the particular \S/ that is recognized the World over. SA's is not 100% like the one WB and DC use for all there ads and toys either, but it is very close and I could live with that. If SA wanted to revise the bottom of the S to make it closer I wouldn't mind. He Doesn't need to though. His Manip is basically designed to show the inherent strength of the Classic Suit. That it does wonderfully. It shows that with a few very well considerd adjustments, the Reeve suit can look bang up to date. Also remember this isn't about what is IN fashion at this particular moment because Superman's costume is beyond fashion...it transcends it. It is what it is... "Superman's Costume" unique, iconic, timeless. BTW. Did I mention the LEFT ONE is my fave? No Dark dark Blue. NO GOLD!! NO 3D \S/, and NO HUGE cape. Just to name 4 items I don't want to see. Will I get my wish? Well it can't be too much longer until we see the real thing, perhaps a few weeks.:)

Thx a lot man I wouldnt mind it,, The boots fitting kinda like cowboy boots would be cool the kindomcome type boot, The cropped neckline kinda reminds me of the oldschool flecher bros cartoons,, I can see him ripping the roofs off cars and stuff looking really cool with that neckline doing it. This is not a knock on your Manipping skills but as usual the high neckline sucks massively, and does not belong any where near the Superman costume. The belt buckle is redundant if you ask me. However yours is the best version of the \S/ belt I have seen so far. If the belt buckle looked like this I would roll my eyes but I could live with it. Like I said though, having another \S/ on the belt is completely redundant, and for that reason I do not see Singer using it. one last thing. The trunks on your manip are hiked up so high it looks like Zod gave Supes an atomic wedgie. This gives a dumpy Torso/ Long Legged look, and that would not be very appealling. :)

Err? Yes you can, because that is what the makers of the movie will have to do. They will have to select ONE proposal. My money is on the Left one which is as close to Classic as one could expect. The others are nice alternatives but the upshot is that, that is all they really are... Alternatives.....different for the sake of being different!

Ok, I'm gonna say it...I'm sick to death over the hysteria over the costume.
Screaming that anything darker or richer than Reeve's turquoise is evil, bleating incessantly over the evils of adjusting the yellow parts of the suit into gold, flipping out over the notion of a longer cape, wetting your pants over the idea of a metal-finish belt buckle, and now throwing a hissy-fit over an individual's interpretation of the traditional emblem (which has always varied from artist to artist)...you people are raving psychophants, you know that? You're ready to cry jihad against anything that isn't a carbon copy of Reeve's suit, and the things you're whinging about are MEANINGLESS! Gold is just a darker, metallic yellow, so the color scheme of the costume wouldn't be thrown off if that adjustment was made. (Lest we forget, some comic book colorists have given the yellow on the suit a gold-tone in recent years.) Dark blue has been done in the Fleischer cartoons and on the animated Superman and Justice League, and the world didn't end. (It's even been done in the comics, depending on who's doing the coloring.) Hell, even Superman merchandise alone (including DC Direct) varies the shade of blue, sometimes opting for darker tones. Kirk Alyn and George Reeves had metal-finish belt buckles, and theit costumes weren't harmed in the least by them. DC Direct sometimes uses the metal-finish buckle on its Superman stuff, and it doesn't do one thing to hurt the look of the character. The cape length varies from artist to artist, from actor to actor. And at no point have any two S-shields on the actors been the same, and they're not even the same in the comics. So why in God's name are so many of you screeching and bleating that for Singer to do this would be the ruination of Superman?! History doesn't support your arguments. Common sense doesn't support your arguments. You're making a big deal over NOTHING, and frankly, it's stupid. You guys sound like the Comic Book Guy made flesh. That's how ludicrous these claims are.
Further, you can bleat and pander and squeal like a stuck pig all you want about wanting a carbon copy of the Reeve suit, but I've got news for you...IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!! Even if they use the traditional design, it's not going to look the same as Reeve's suit. The turquoise was done for bluescreen purposes; greenscreen means an actual blue can be used for the Supersuit. Suit construction isn't even the same as it was in 1978, so a copy of Reeve's outfit isn't even an option, especially if they're going with the Spider-Man approach. And as I said in another thread, no two live-action Supersuits have EVER looked the same. Different shades of blue (or in Reeve and the Superboys' case, turquoise for bluescreen), different cape lengths, different versions of the boots and emblem. differences in the look of the belt...variation is part of the tradition. Darker shades of red and blue on Routh's costume are almost a given, considering what was done with Spider-Man's costume. Gold-tones in place of the yellow? They made the web pattern on Spider-Man's suit silver-black, so why not? It's still red, blue, and yellow, just in different shades and tones. The possibility of a metal-tone buckle? Been done before, DC Direct still uses it, it's nothing new. I don't see the public crying foul over any of this. What you whiners need to realize is that Routh's suit is going to be different from Reeve's in some way or another, even if it's only a darkening of the color scheme. Get your heads out of the sand. It's not 1978 anymore. If Singer goes with the traditional design, it still won't be the Reeve suit. It'll be a new Superman costume for this era. Accept this and get over it.
You want to complain about something? Find something that's actually controversial or worthy of debate. This nitpicking over totally unimportant nothings is blisteringly stupid. It's times like this that make me deeply ashamed that this is my fandom....

I want to complain about your spelling of 'psychophants' The classical spelling is SYCHOPHANTS! Also I'm not even sure why you have used that term?? Sychophant: a Servile Self serving flatterer. A Swindler??? Sorry don't get it? BTW What SA did in his Manip is Reeve+ in my book. However ultimately it would be not be Reeve's costume but a progression thereof. 'Routh Classic' is what it would be, if they went with this design. We never asked for a carbon copy of Reeve's suit for your info, but rest assured the new suit will look like it was inspired by it. Now that IS common sense.:)

Jim Lee's Supes even though it has a slightly higher neckline, still has the appearance of a tucked in cape, rather than one that looks like it's about to fall off. If it looks like Lee's version around the neck/cape attachment area then I would be fine with it.

Yes but you poste a Jim lee picture with no comment. It looked like you were answering my request to show a picture where he has a high neckline. Also you didn't answer my question about why you are so sure about this.(Not that I doubt it. I've always said it would be this way) It wasn't that long ago that you were adamant that it WOULD have a collar. Who is your new source?

TRUE! I should have been more specific, i.e. Show me pictures with a higher neckline that requires the cape to be attached on top of the costume like an after thought. (rather than tucked in)

pardon my English.... you know, some of these manips here might not have 'professional' quality or lived up to certain people's 'vision', but at least those who made them are capable of coming with their own version rather than just sit in front of computer complaining 'this is lame', 'o, that sucks' etc etc.

I actually praised your manip! When I criticize something, it is the changes not the ability (nor the effort) of someone's manip that I'm critiquing. In fact a badly done manip could still look good if the proposed changes were excellent. It could still convey the basic idea. The Quality of the manip is secondary to what the suggested changes are. BTW. You are right I am not skilled in doing manips. However I actually build stuff for TV and theatre for a profession. Now if you want to compare those abilities, then in that area I am very very qualified.

Okay I see you did the other manip that I said Lame-O in. I'm Sorry if that offended you, but it was the proposed changes you have suggested that I was refering to, not your skill at doing manips or the effort you put in. Okay perhaps Lame-O was harsh so I'm sorry for that. How about this: Hey very nice maniping skills but IMO those changes are totally unsuited to Superman. Nice effort on your part by the way. Oh! And the one you did of Reeve flying over the city is one of the finest I have ever seen. In fact it is incredible. It really Shows why Singer and Co. will have to do very little to make the Classic costume work in the context of this movie. :)

Yes! I asked my friend Eddie who is one of the heads in that dept. and he said that you would apply directly to whomever you wanted to work for in that particular field rather than to their union hall. BTW They are no longer IATSE local # 816. (as of about two years ago) They have merged with the Production/Art directors local IATSE Local #800. I told him I knew a guy that is very talented and wanted to see about entering this field. I said I had seen you stuff and that imo you had bags of ability. If you are serious, whenever you are ready, just IM me and I'll set something up. Okay the normal topic of discussion will now resume lol! :)
Dark Knight
01-24-2005, 12:06 AM

As much as I like Welling as a young Clark Kent, he just doesn't look like Superman. It's not an acting thing. He looks good as the young Clark, just not as Supes.
It's odd, I mean he even looks good in the suit, but he just does not say 'Superman" in it. Granted it's hard to see anyone other then Reeve be Superman when in the suit.
